Once upon the 1990s, Toho and turned Godzilla and company into an education OVA Anime that remains one of the most bizarre things ever created with the characters - which is really saying something, all things considered. Yes, it's not just the memes - this was real.

They're children characters only when you make 'em children characters. Snyder isn't exactly the first one to do Superman, Batman etc. not as children characters.

So he's what, like 50-60 feet tall? I feel like that's not very impressive by kaiju standards, but I don't really have a frame of reference.
@@spencereades It's not, but Kaiju sizes jump around a lot. Godzilla was originally like, 150 feet tall, now he's 400 feet tall. Kong's been 25 feet tall, 60 feet tall, 150 feet tall, and the new one is 104 feet tall in Skull Island, but "still just an adolescent", so he can be 400 feet tall in the upcoming Vs movie.
The problem is that all the multiples of ten don't fit the meter, and aren't as easy to 'get'.
The impeccable timing of that Krusty the Clown insert, left me absolutely creasing 😂🤣
It's funny that they've all been so heavily redesigned to fit in a cartoon show for preschoolers... *EXCEPT* Mecha-Godzilla, who looks like he always does.

I thought I was ready for how weird this was gonna get - then I saw the live action bit of Godzilla dancing with the Japanese girl.

So, I learned that there is an anime where Hatsune Miku and Godzilla fight, and Shinji from Evangelion shows up. I am still reeling from the fact that this is a real thing and you can find it on TH-cam (as when this comment was posted that is). It is also probably one of the best looking Godzillas animated even if he is covered in snow the whole time.

Way more nostalgic for the Hanna-Barbera Godzilla than I expected.
Gojiran needs to be in the next movie. Just a giant pink godzilla with heart spikes, she comes out of the water helps godzilla fight and they return to the ocean together splash eachother a bit and then sink into the depths. She is never seen again and is not commented on further.
You know what's fun is I actually knew this but totally forgot about it I love it when that happens.

I found this by accident in the 90s when I bought a few VHS bootlegs of Heisei Godzilla movies that weren't legitimately available in the US, they had a great assortment of random Gojira clips tacked onto the end as extras. US news stories, Japanese movie trailers, toy ads, and some of these Godzillaland bits. Def added a lot of value to the tape in those pre-TH-cam days.
The whole endeavor looks sickeningly cute in the best way ever! Kid me would've been all over this and adult me at least wants a stuffed Chibi Godzilla

When I was a kid, my dad got me the Godzilla Game Boy game, which was a puzzle game based on Godzilland rather than the big monsters I was familiar with. I didn't know what the hell I was looking at.

Why am I not surprised this was popular in Japan?
If you really think about it, Godzilla becoming a somewhat friendly character makes sense in the context of nuclear energy. It started out as the harbinger of doom and brought Japan to its knees, then suddenly it became part of everyday life. And yeah, you get the occasional meltdown, it's still better than the alternative. And in fighting other threats to humanity, be it other kaiju or fossil fuel dependency, it's at least good to have one powerful force on your side.
Also, Japan just really has a thing for making things cute, even demons and stuff.

I dont particularly agree with movie bobs definition of 'anime' .' Anime' is just a japanese word for animation. Like , ANY animation from anywhere in the world. Stuff like The simpsons ,wallace and gromit , frozen and the lion king are all refered to as 'anime' in japan .The western idea that all japanese animation is strictly called 'anime' came from distribution companies in america that were putting out japanese animated movies , shows and OVA's in the early 90s.'Cartoons' sounded to juvenile for the more teen/tween/ adult targetded stuff they were putting out so they rebranded their product as "anime" because it supposedly made their releases sound more exotic, edgy and cool than any mere "cartoon" could be ( cos you know , "cartoons" are baby stuff). Over time , the classification of anime in the west was cemented as specifically japanese animation , thanks to that bit of branding , but the truth is if you go by the original japanese meaning of the term (itself a loan word from france) : anime means anything animated , from anywhere in the world . The fact that so many hardcore weebs dont know or understand this, never fails to baffle me .

Dammit Bob. I watched Godzilla 2014 on your word and it was shockingly boring. But hey, they were cock teasing the action. So I watched king of the monsters the other day, which gives you all the big monster on monster action... And somehow, it was still shockingly boring. Kong Skull Island has been the only one of these so far that's been worth it IMO. And that is probably enough to get me to check out the new movie...
To be fair, while Bob liked Skull Island and LOVED KOTM, he didn't like Godzilla 2014 very much.

While I am sure the actress who plays Godzilla's Oni-chan does a good job I feel like it was a huge wasted opportunity to not have the actress who plays Miki Saegusa (the girl with psychic powers that has a soft spot for Godzilla in the Heisei era) to play the Oni-chan.

Having only watched the first of the newer anime movies, the plot is about a Secret Godzilla under the Godzilla. It is about as good as The Meg (so, bad).

What is the actual definition of anime?
Meaning is always subjective! In Japan it is used as a term for any animation. But in the US it is used as a term often for Japanese animation specifically. So the two most well-known definitions contradict each other. When I was a kid in the late-70s through early-80s a popular term in the media for it was "Japanimation" which most people I knew thought sounded rather cringe. Usually I'll say _Japanese anime_ to acknowledge that there are other kinds.
