The Big Picture's host has a Big Mood about Big Monsters reacting to the trailer for "GODZILLA VS KONG" and the (still) questionable potential of actually being able to watch this and the rest of Warner Bros' 2021 slate the right way - on the big screen, as it becomes safe again - now that AT&T has forced the studio to fall on its sword to prop up HBO/MAX. To lighten the mood, we also take a look back at how an American giant-gorilla and a Japanese atomic-dinosaur being hypothetical monster movie heavyweight rivals became a "thing" in the first place.

Well given the popular theory is that the godzilla they've shown us so far is actually mechagodzilla (you can supposedly see his skinless robot form in a few frames of the trailer) so I'm putting a bet on Kong facing him, getting beat, then teaming up with the *real* godzilla to put the smack down on the robot
@@LordSvzklx I've seen the frames of unskinned McG that people are talking about, and personally? It looks more ape-like to me. We just might have King Kong and Godzilla vs. McG and Robo-Kong. Or at least just a Robo-Kong. Either way, I'm into it.

This is why i hate VS movies, i get childish about them. There is no way Kong can be a match to Godzilla.
@@davidv4018 In physical ability? probably not. Godzilla is stronger, has tougher Armour, and can blast radiation out of his mouth. BUT Kong is faster, more agile, and is smarter, he can think up strategies and use weapons. Godzilla would still most likely win But Kong will give him a run for his money I guarantee.
I'm surprised Bob didn't talk about Kong: The Animated Series where a scientist uses Kongs DNA to create a clone of the original King Kong from the 1933 film and also creates a device that can link her grandson and Kong together so they can fight an evil scientist and a demon called Chiros

I've got those two animated movies. Plus the animated musical with Dudley Moore. Still amazed the franchise is as big as it is. I used to think it was just the seven prior live-action movies.

I've been impressed to see bob's been working his ass off on the algorithm side of things, pumping out content. I'm still way happier to see him just do a 'I HEART MONSTER MOVIES' video.
Gods I love just how campy it all is.
I'm just glad it looks like the fights in this one will take place with a mostly unobscured view. I still don't understand why GKOTM insisted on hiding its best moments behind rain, fog, smoke, etc. It made for cool shots on occasion, but I wanted to actually SEE what was going on! (And Kong Skull Island showed that it absolutely could be done; that final fight was amazing.)
As a godzilla fan, I don't care if it "looks" worse that KOM because all the CGI will be day time. Id rather just be able to see the fighting without squinting. I'm been cheering for rubber monsters to beat each other up for 30 years. It aint gonna kill me.
Rain, fog and smoke can help obscure less stellar CG. It's why all the Pacific Rim fights were at night and in the rain.
Kong only had the one big set piece so they could throw money at it to make it look good once, KOTM had lots of them.
But really, its Godzilla. We're fine with rubber suits. We don't care if the CG is a little off, just let us see it!
Yes, so true! That's why I don't get why Bob is so in love with KotM. It still had most of the problems of the first one.
@@arvidp.247 eeeh I actually still like it. I think regardless of logic we can still decide we love or dont love certain films that have a certain spark that hits us. I think TLJ is one of the worst films Ive ever seen, Bob think its a triumph. Kevin Smith loved Suicide Squad because..reasons. On KOTM I love it despite its flaws because Im just that big of a fan. I love when Godzilla gets powered up at the end. Thats my scream in joy moment. Im aware the story and logic is pretty dumb and it had worse screen coloring than Justice League, but I got to see Mothra kick Rodans ass and it made me happy.
@@nathan-tz9ow Don't get me wrong, I don't hate it. And I don't care too much about story logic in a movie like this. But I really dislike action scenes where I can't see what's going on. I prefer wide shots and long takes over close ups and quick cuts. While KotM was better than the first movie from that series but still filmed in a way that it's hard to recognize the fights and also keeps cutting back to uninteresting human cahracters doing unimportant stuff. Skull Island did it much better. The trailer for GvK looks great in that regard but trailers usually don't show the whole truth, so I'll just wait and see. Hopefully in a cinema.
My dad pulled me away from playing with my dinosaur toys when I was a kid and sat me down to watch King Kong vs Godzilla with him, thereby starting a fascination which would follow me my whole life.

I'd love to see you do a belated review of Shin Godzilla. Fantastic film without enough discussion on its own merits or standing it up alongside and in comparison to the most recent Legend/American ones, at least that I've seen.

Unpopular opinion: I think Kong: Skull Island is the best of the 3 monster films we've had so far, having said that, I'm on team Godzilla
I mean it is, it has the strongest setting, the human plot is the most relatable of the three while also not overwhelming why we are here to see it and apocalypse now but with King Kong on island lost to time filled with giant monsters is better than seeing two films in which they argue for most of the film about whether to use a weapon of mass destruction.

It is a great movie. The real unpopular opinion is that this universe of movies based on monsters is pretty good. The movies are mostly pretty good; and i don't see the hype they probably deserve.
@@davidv4018 Godzilla 2014 did not set the stage very well. Most Godzilla fans (such as myself) were pretty underwhelmed by it. Had I never gone back to give Skull Island a chance, I never would have known how good the next 2 movies would be.

Man I'm super hyped Kong and Godzilla are getting a rematch. It's hard to believe it's been over 50 years and this is the second time they're meeting. But now the Americans are making it and it looks so fun
Honestly just glad we're getting giant monster movies with Hollywood budgets. And after this Toho should be rebooting their own connected series of Godzilla films. At least, last I read that was the plan.

Well, Toho PLANNED to take a break from Goji-sama, then reboot him after a decade or so... After the 1998 Tri-star film. Until they actually SAW it. (0.0)
At that point they decided that they couldn't have THAT be the default Godzilla for a decade, and started cranking out what became the Millenium period films. Including especially "Godzilla: Final Wars," which had Big G kick ALL the kaiju asses, especially a thinly disguised Tristar "Zilla." A fight that lasted 5 seconds. Plus at least 15 seconds of radioactive flambe-ing.
Luckily, Legendary has done a good enough job so far that Toho hasn't felt a need to release a series of films just to repudiate them.
I feel for you how Godzilla King of The Monsters didn't get the attention it really needed & the fact that Warner Bros is planning to stream Godzilla vs Kong on A STREAMING SERVICE!!?

I tried to watch it on the plane, the place where even the WORST movies are okay, and I was so bored and angry at the horrendous script that I turned it off

My first ever Kaiju movie was the OG King Kong vs Godzilla on some late-night rerun when I was in single digit ages. I fell in love instantly and even had fun with the Godzilla cartoon show with Godzookie of all things. Since the 1998 Godzilla remake, I've been waiting for this match-up to happen again. I'm so stoked and can't wait for it to be released.
I have waited most of my life for this. I am so excited, I really hope we don't all die in some stupid apocalypse in the next two months.

As for Godzilla. Saw 2014 twice in theaters, KotM three times, & will figure out seeing GvK at least one time. I guess hbo will get one month of my money to watch it like fifty times after that.

One more thing with the confusing rights issues: For the DVD and bluray releases of the original Kong vs Godzilla, the US could ONLY release the English dubbed version of the movie, while Japanese releases could ONLY contain the original Japanese version of the film (dvd/bluray releases of other Godzilla movies in japan would often have dual language audio tracks). It was only very recently that this was rectified, with a Criterion Collection release of all the Showa era Godzilla movies that had the Japanese version of King Kong vs Godzilla as a bonus feature.
I really wish I had a theater near me that played old movies. Watching them at home, even on a large TV just isn't the same.

The studio released King of the Monsters within a month of Avengers, Toy Story, X-men, Detective Pikachu, Aladdin, and The Lion King. The movie never stood a chance.

Got to wonder if the Godzilla we see fighting Kong in the Trailer is actually MechaGodzilla in disguise just as was the case back in 1974s Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla.
Also is anyone else outside the US cheesed off the WB haven't done a deal with Amazon or Netflix to Stream this film in countries that can't get HBO Max so we have to wait for the DVD release to see this movie as the cinemas are shut?
king kong vs godzilla holds such a mythic place in my memory. it doesnt matter how good it was. it was that idea. the original High Concept film for us boomers. im realizing right now, weeks after watching the trailer and thinking "hmm, could be good' that i HAVE TO SEE THIS IN THE THEATRE. I HAVE TO SEE THIS. MUST SEE. AAAAARRRRGGHHHH.
It's MechaGodzilla in the end. Kong and Godzilla become besties and fight together against MechaGodzilla.
All I want to say is... I love seeing images of King Kong with a DK tie and Godzilla dressed up as King K. Rool.
I don't like how they're framing Godzilla as the villain, but I'm also like 98% certain that's actually Mecha-Godzilla.

King of the Monsters was underwhelming honestly. This looks it will be more excitingly shot.
I absolutely loved KOTM and it broke my heart to see it fail at the box office and really pissed me off when critics tore it to shreds.
The visuals, sound design and yes even the story made it a memorable Godzilla movie that hangs with the best of them.

I've only learned about Mechanikong in the past couple days and Kong fighting a roboduplicate is tight.
The problem I always had: scale. Godzilla was so huge, his tail was knocking down skyscrapers. Meanwhile, King Kong fit on a theater stage and had to climb for ten minutes to top the Empire State Building! He'd have been roasted and squished, if Godzilla even noticed him!
Fortunately, they went big with Kong. Like, freaky big. Like, knowing a thing or two about biology makes you weep big. So, it works, now. I so want to see this. I saw the first Godzilla, but now I want to wait and see all of them together.

The chief bad guy from that robot King Kong movie was called Dr. Who (Hu?). No relation to the British scifi series, but I always felt that he kinda dressed like the Master, though.
I remember when I saw Kong vs Godzilla on Super Station TBS and before they showed it they had two pro wrestlers do a Tale of the Tape for it. I think one of them was Michael P.S. Hayes from the Fabulous Freebirds . Anyone else remember this? This movie will be the reason I get HBO MAX
Don't sleep on this movie people! I do not like hearing Bob complain that we didn't go to the last movie, especially when I did actually watch it in the movie theater. This is starting to feel like that group project in school where I did all the work and when it was time for the presentation my drunk group member decided to hump the table in front of the whole class ruining the presentation and the rest of the groups grades!

And after the kinda shitty first Zilla film from the last decade, and the okay Kong film, and the kinda okay Zilla sequel...I really do hope this is good haha.

I actually saw King of the Monsters in theaters twice. It's the only movie I saw more than once in a theater that year, including Endgame. It was so disappointing when it didn't do well financially. Unfortunately, I'll probably have to get a HBO MAX one week trial to see Kong Vs Godzilla.

I like that the MonsterVerse is taking a slow approach to its movies. Don’t get me wrong I love the MCU’s 20+ movies, but these monster movies are taking a slower pace than even Phase 1. And I’m cool with that.

I've been anticipating a King Kong/Godzilla rematch for years. It always annoyed me when people said Kong was too small or Godzilla too powerful. One guy had the nerve to tell me it wasn't "realistic". Wrap your head around that one.
Hey, if you're in a giant monster mood, how about you do that Ultraman episode? It's the 55th anniversary this year and they just added the original show to TubiTV! They also added Ultra Q in all its black and white glory, and they have Ultraseven, Ultraman Leo, Ultraman Orb, Ultraman Geed and the movies related to the last two!

All I got from the trailer is that they've kidnapped Kong to puppeteer a fight between him and Godzilla, which is exactly the stupidest way to write a kaiju fight.
Also, Godzilla 2 was Batman V Superman levels of "Fast Forward, we want a cinematic universe w/o the work".
For a long time I rented this every week, I think I was 7 or so. 50p for a two day rental..... I miss video stores and when £1 got a kid crisps, drink, chocolate and a movie. 2021 you give a kid a pound and they ask if they can have v bucks instead.........
I use to do that too! Lived in a tiny lake side town with a movie rental place 3 blocks down. So little 8 year old me would pop into the rental store ALL THE TIME and rent the same two movies over and over. Mine were The Chipmunks Movie and Black Beauty. For some reason I was fixated on that horse.
