    Great video. To replace just the bushings on the wheel adjusters do I need to follow the same steps in this video in order to access them.

    1:22 The 12mm bolt. Looking at mine, it didn't appear to be 12mm. 8mm? No, the socket just spins on it. Turns out whoever tried to fix this mower in the past broke the head of the 12mm bolt off. I think I should be able to use a punch and tap it out, but if things are rusty like they are on this HRX217 I'm repairing, it can be an issue. I'm glad I waited to order parts, as I'll need new bolt and retainer.
    It looks as though I may need to replace the hydrostatic transmission also--one of the keyways where the key and spring sit in the axle is wallowed out, and one of the axle spacers was holding the key in place, and cocked sideways. And beyond that, I don't even know if it works. Going to test it but I'm not hopeful.

    I had a supposedly small engine mechanic replace one of the wheel assembly on my honda. I was doing it myself but the gear was very difficult to remove. I was going to force but i didnt want to break anything. When I took it to this mechanic basically did what I was going to do which was force it off. This mower was never taken apart before. The problem was when he was done there was some washers not placed. He also did not turn off gas line. Oil also leaked out from places it shouldnt when it was turned over. I eventually was able to fix it myself but sure took alot of time.

    I wanted to see the transmission removed so I could see if the belt has a bearing that might need to be replaced. I am taking out the engine because of a bent crankshaft and wanted to replace all the bearings. Does that end of the belt rotate on a bearing and if so, how do I remove it?

    At 0:47, you take off the chute control (Honda calls it a shutter arm). Mine is rusted to the shaft/pin and isn’t budging. I’m hoping an overnight soak in penetrating oil will help. I’m afraid to try heat because of the nylon deck.
    If I had one bit of advice for a new HRX owner, it would be to take everything under the deck apart before the first use and coat everything with anti-seize. Just kidding but not really. Here in KC it’s impossible to avoid mowing damp/wet grass during the spring; if you tried, you’d be mowing 3’ tall grass. So then we have no choice but to hose out the underside... and then everything rusts like crazy.
    Great video.

      @veteranssmallenginerepair5934  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Penetrating oil is your best bet. Let it soak then try a small gear puller. If you don't have a gear puller you could try a small pry bar and moderate hammer taps on the side to shock it loose. Good luck and thanks for watching!

    • @KSMike1
      @KSMike1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just adding a comment in case it’s useful to anyone. What a job this ended up being. Bottom line is I pulled the transmission out, reconditioned the ends of the axle shafts, replaced all the nylon bushings in the adjusters, all the snap rings and all the adjuster seals. The transmission itself seemed fine so I took a chance and reinstalled it. On the adjuster arm I soaked it in penetrating oil for two days but in the end I had to rent a 2-jaw puller (now I own one) and that *almost* didn’t get it out. I wire wheeled every steel part back to good steel and coated the heck out of them with grease during reassembly. All seems well now but I haven’t actually mowed with it yet and there was no smoking gun to explain why everything came apart.
      Thanks for some great videos!

    Great video, thank you. If you are only replacing the belt, not the transmission, do you do that by taking off the underneath covers like you show up to 3:20? Or is there any easier way?

      On this particular sub model (TDA), that is the easiest way. The hardest part will be the blade adapter if there is corrosion involved. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      Check your belt, pulley's and tension spring first. If they are good then your transmission is probably bad.

    I messed up bud bught a used 217 with the plastic deck just like the one in your video, guy did no maintenance, everytime something fialed he wired it and went on. Acle bushing air cleaner cable he ruined it all. Now its all apart, and im going to do a ground up and I think it has low compresion. I feel dumb for not looking harder. So Im going to do it my way. Bronze bushings or bearing all the way to the top. Maybe even port the head and make an exhaust!

      @@veteranssmallenginerepair5934 Thanks !! We have one in for repairs, but as we are in Australia, this particular model was never imported....hence there must be a part missing, that it attaches to... If there is a chance of a picture of where it attaches, I would REALLY appreciate seeing it, so i can repair correctly. Providing I can get the part in Oz :)

      You don't need to uninstall the wheel height adjuster on the transmission side! Just do the opposite side, and rotate the transmission and slide it out to clear the shaft from the adjuster. Just did it on my HRX 217 HYA. Trying to get that transmission-side wheel adjuster off WITH the transmission in place is unnecessary and very difficult.

    hey nice vids, awesome tutorials. I'm up to the part where you removed the shoot control but mine is not coming off even though I'm pulling it hard is there a reason why it might not be coming off that you can think of? I tried wd-40 on it because it was pretty rusty but still couldent take it off. I'm replacing the transmission as well on my HRX217 TDA. Before getting to the transmission I have to take off that cover but I cant because the shoot control will not budge.

      Sorry for the delay in answering. Starting At 1:52 of part 1, th-cam.com/video/3irOuJ7_Y1k/w-d-xo.html in the bag chute is a 10 mm nut in the center of the screen attached to the long slotted flat bar (shutter arm) that needs to be removed. At 5:42 of the same video, there are 6 bolts that need to be removed. 2 long bolts that go through the deck to the rear of the engine and 4 short bolts that attach to the deck. The three semi circular metal pieces (shutter holders) with the lip on them are removed next. There is one other nut and bolt located near the base of the green bag / mulch lever, accessible from the top rear after the recoil and fuel tank are removed but this is just the lever control linkage and I have never removed it as it does not prevent the removal of the shutter. you can contact me at veteranssmallenginerepair@gmail.com if you need pics . Thanks for watching and commenting. I hope this helps!

      What model of Honda mower? The model number is printed on a label located on the rear of the deck, in front of the bag attachment door.
      If the engine runs but the mower does not self propel it could be the shift cable, the drive clutch cable, the transmission or the drive gears / sprockets on the drive wheels.
      Feel free to email me with more details and thanks for watching and commenting!

    You make it seem super complicated no offense but I'm 26 years old and it's much easier than put maybe that's just different teachings and my common sense but when watching you're videos I get lost when I've done this exact same routine on the same and many different models

      I shoot the videos in this manner to help the average person with little or no experience do the repairs themselves. Are there easier or faster ways to do something or shortcuts that can be taken? Of course there are. Experience teaches us these faster methods. Everyone learns at a different pace. The things that might seem obvious to you or I may not be obvious to others, so I include all that I can so others can gain the experience and confidence to do their own repairs. Where I live, small engine labor rates vary from $35.00 - $85.00 per hour and in my opinion that's way too much. If I can help people save money on what usually is a simple repair then my goal for these videos has been met. Thanks for watching!
