Thanks for the great video series. Just completed my transmission replacement using this series and it was spot on, the order is important and you were very detailed.

Well presented sir! As a mechanic for 10yrs and engineer for 37 yrs, this is nicely presented (as are Parts 1 & 2) with all the relevant information. (and no fumbling around) This was very helpful in understanding how this complicated design is actually put together. My worm gear was stripped from years of wear but this got me to the end of the journey directly.

Very thorough and useful. I have just watched the three videos and have a lot of confidence that I can replace the transmission without too much trouble. Thank you, sir!

Greetings from the Napa Valley. I used your video to work on my mower it saved me alot of guesswork. I looked on utube and you were the most complete and easy to understand. I did tear the transmission apart and thought I fixed it. To make a long story short it still didnt work. It is now a push mower did not want to spend the I think around 150 bucks because it is a three speed.I own a small engine repair shop and do just 4 stroke and learn something new every day. Basically what I don't know. Thanks for you great videos

Hi, great job. I have a hrx217 kvka. I replaced the belt and the cable, and no go yet. Also i went through the adjustment process. I am tempted to take the 4 screws out of the plate on the bottom of trans to see what it looks like in there. So i am almost positive its the transmission. The place i order parts from say i have to buy a kit which is $108.00 but it includes those parts i mentioned in the kit and i don’t need them. Do you know where i can get just the transmission for a decent price? Thanks

It's possible ebay might have one. Most places sell the kit with those parts. Try to google your model and sub model.

Wave washer has only one correct way, Correct way should put pressure on wheel. The error side will give wheel no pressure.

Is there lubricant inside the hydrostatic type transmission? With light use over last couple of years since new, mine is a bit noisy, like dry gears. How do you check or add lubricant?

One source says "Internal parts for the TDA's transmission are not available. Honda sells only a transmission as an assembly. There is no published spec for the gearbox oil, either.", while another says "Honda use 10W30 oil for this transmision.". I personally have never serviced one, only replaced them. I will check with some sources that I have and comment tomorrow.

The Honda dealer I am friends with says the transmission is non-serviceable. I'm still looking though.

Of the posts I've read about filling or replacing the fluid on a Honda hydrostatic drive (In this case, on an HRX217HXA), the best ones IMO are written by "1 FMF" and posted here: www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1164131 His 09/09/08 08:51 PM and 07/10/14 03:47 PM posts (six years apart - apparently he's worked on these a number of times) are the most informative. The latter talks about the importance of completely filling the trans with oil. Any air will cause a problem. He describes tricks he used to assure a complete fill. I just started checking into this because my mower drive unit is noticeably slower than it war originally (I have an HYA which I think is an update of the HXA). I realize it's a year since you asked, but I hope this helps.

For gear drive transmission, I replace 3 leaky oil seals from ebay size 12 x 19 x 5 mm. It's vital to RTV seal with no oil, parts needs to be dry and very clean. Drill hole on top to add 4 oz synthetic oil or 1" from bottom. Seal hole with rubber and RTV sealant. Honda will not sell these mower trans parts.
