- Quick video on diagnosing a stuck or sticky exhaust pressure control valve or exhaust flap.
This one was extremely sticky, i did have luck lubricating it somewhat but ultimately required replacement.

very timely video. my 2012 Golf TDI, now out of extended emissions warranty, just started clicking this valve yesterday. thanks for doing this video Josh.
That’s always how it seems, atleast it’s a fairly easy repair
So incase you ever have to do another one. Free it up best you can, the spring loses tension. If you put the flap all the way down the spring lifts off the housing. Slip a 3.16 rivet (-the shaft) overr the spring and let it come back.(spring has tension now) Work it back and forth a bit(pb blaster) and it will return on its own.
That sounds easy enough, the car I initially did this for seemed to free up after soaking with penetrating oil for a few days
Thanks! Can you please do a video on how to access and remove the control valve! I can't seem to find a good tutorial online right now, and I'd like to check the state of my existing one too before I order a brand new one
I did a video on removing the aftertreatment system, sadly the valve was already off then but i showed where ir was located in it
Hey josh, just curious where you order parts from? I live in Ontario as well. I have a 2011 cjaa tdi I got a few weeks ago and so far it’s been pretty good. Do you use any fuel additives? Sorry for the questions I’m new to the tdi world.
Idparts is very reasonable, pre-pay duty fees and shipping is fixed (usually gets here in 2 days). Germanoem in Toronto is another go to. This will be my first common rail and isn’t on the road yet so I haven’t used any additive but I plan on using something for lubricity, as far as a cleaner I usually use liqui moly diesel purge on filter changes
@Jdjd-k5z I have done it both ways, I personally think people make a bigger deal out of it then they need to
Hey Josh, I have a 2015 Jetta TDI and it has a permanent check engine code. OBD2 reader shows it to be (Exhaust Pressure Control Value Position Sensor/Switch Circuit) (Code P048B). Any ideas before I start replacing parts? If it happens to be the the pressure control valve can you provide a part number? Thanks great video!
The 15's are different but id try output test and make sure everything it moving correctly, if it is i'd try 5Q0253692B
Hey, thank you for the awesome video lately I smell exhaust fumes sipping inside the cabin. I live in Washington the northwest so only when we get some snow my 2013 Golf TDi is exposed. I guess I can remove that device and see if I can replicate what you just did. However, my life could be much easier if I have that VCDS software. My girlfriend recently has given me her TDI and honesty I’m more familiar with Hondas and Subaru’s but not with Mk6 VW’s. I’m curious how you were able to downloaded on your laptop. I definitely need that, could you help me with that or do you happen to know where I can buy it? Thank you so much any help is highly appreciated🥹
Ross tech is the maker of vcds, hex-v2 enthusiast is what you want. As far as the leak I have soot in the tunnel before and after this flap, there’s 2 v band seals which it could be leaking out of.
Hello,l have error P048B,and some time car have long start and goes out on ignition. Can this error affect the ignition of the car during a cold start?
It could possibly be getting stuck shut, no where for the exhaust to go means no where for fresh air to go
What is this program you're using and how do I get it?
VCDS from Ross tech is what I used, can buy directly from Ross tech or cascade German
Car just threw the code today Still runs fine. Am I fine to drive the car up to work tmr. 130 miles round trip. 2014 Passat tdi
It’ll be fine, it’ll probably just prevent regen if it won’t close.
How do you get the valve from the actual exhaust? Do you have to pull off the exhaust?
Yes 2 v-band clamps hold it to the exhaust
Thanks. I figured it out lol
Thanks. I figured it out lol
Thanks. I figured it out lol
Hello, if I remove it , is it dangerous for my engine to have it off ??
It requires it for regen so if you still have a dpf your going to need it.
@@JoshsJettas I don’t have dpf , i have down pipe , so it’s ok to delete it right ??
Hey, where is this valve located?
About where the back seat footwell is, between the front cat and rear cat
Hi Josh, My company want to send a diagnostic tool to you.
Straight pipe it
Can you run the car without this valve if you get a new straight exhaust missing this valve out??
Its used for regens and low pressure egr, if by straight exhaust you mean by removing the aftertreatment system then this isnt required
@@JoshsJettas Thank you for your reply. As you can probably tell I don't know a lot about cars. I've had the dpf filter removed 2 years ago and a remap as that kept giving me problems. Now this exhaust pressure control valve is giving me issues. Not sure If I can have it removed as well? Or should I just get a new one fitted?
It should be tuned out but you never know, unplug it and see if a code pops up. If nothing comes up then you can get rid of it
noticed there is updated VW part number 1K0-253-691J- best price i found was ID Parts
That’s where I got the one in the video as well
@@JoshsJettas also noticed that spraying fluid film on mine freed up the valve... at least temporarily
@@dh7277 What fluid did you use? Did you remove the entire part?
@Jacob-ne7ro i used "Fluid Film" and sprayed where i could see the shaft. i did not take apart the valve nor did i remove it from the car. so even though i purchased a new valve i have not changed the valve as 5 months and 10k kms later it is still working. i am very surprised that it is still working.
