    • @User36282
      @User36282 2 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Not the point. People like you don't see the bigger picture. It's the final responsibility of the bridge operator to check it's clear. If someone had passed out on the bridge, if an old person had fallen down and knocked themselves unconscious or just couldn't move, if a car had broken down and couldn't move, if a child was unaware of the rules. There are too many scenarios where you can't give sole responsibility to the person on the bridge. The operator is there for a reason, because sometimes occurrences like this DO happen and the bridge can't just automatically open, the operator's literal job is to check before opening, otherwise they would just have it automatically open.

  • @greekatso
    @greekatso 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    What a lot of people don't realize too, it's not just a 10-15' drop to the ground. There's a couple foot gap between the stationary portion of the bridge and the elevated section, this leads to a pit that could be another 30-40' down from where you see.

      That old lady probably had hearing problems at her age and what about people with earbuds in, they may not hear the alarm. There is no way the old lady past the gate and walked with her bike far enough on the bridge to drop 50 feet to her death when it went up, she was well on it when the alarm sounded if it did at all.

      Will an air raid siren move a broken down car? Will an air raid siren move someone that has fallen over and can't move? The operator needs to be aware of what is on the bridge before they raise it. It's why their job exists and the bridges don't automatically raise.

    Drawbridge accidents are actually common. A few happen every year. You have a total of two minutes. There's a warning bell, one minute later, the gate goes down, visual inspection, one minute later the bridge goes up. That's the procedure. So if you're in the middle of a bridge, you have two minutes to make it to the other end of the bridge. I don't think that's a lot of time. Worst part is, that's not even what's happening. They're not following procedure, they're skipping the visual inspection.

    I live in Hampton roads area of Virginia. We have more than our share of draw bridges. And can easily get stuck at a couple lifts at different bridges on the same trip. There are ample warnings before the bridges lift. Usually a very loud bell( like at rail crossing we have a few of them too) , a couple sets of arms and traffic lights. The bicyclists was just inside the arm. How did he call( calmly) and still hold on to the railing at the same time? I'm sure there are incompetent bridge tenders. But, the bike and the van( that stopped at the edge) were either very unlucky, trying to beat the lift or purposely looking for a payday.

      Because the bridge doesn't hinge at road level. A gap immediately appears between the separation plates when the bridge starts to open. In some cases the end plate on the moving part of a draw-bridge drops below the level of the road depending on where the rotor hinge system is on the cantilever span as shown in the footage of the car incident. If a cyclist or pedestrian tried to get off the cantilever while in motion they could be severely injured or fall to their death. The cyclist footage appears to show the footpath end section raising above road level thus he would have had only a few seconds to get off with minimal to no injury if he tried fast enough.

      @@robertvirginiabeach I imagine cars can cross quickly but it doesn't make sense why both the car and the cyclist pretty much were on the bridge just before it started to close. I'm guessing he thought it was safe to stop there for whatever reason, but honestly, the bridge tender should have left the gate open until the car passed then closed it. It just seems to me like the tender didn't even know there was a car there and that's a big problem. If they are not seeing car, what luck does a pedestrian have? Seems they need to install motion detectors or something to have a safety net for the tenders to grab their attention. I have dealed with a lot of draw bridges and the warnings lights and gates gives you plenty of time to stop and not enter and also these draw bridges don't raise all that fast and mostly likely giving you time to get back of the thing. How can the bridge tender not have seen the man unless it was good ole texting time on the phone.

      You have 60 seconds of warning. If you are already on the bridge and it’s windy, a bicyclist isn’t necessarily going to hear the sound. The car driver, I agree that seemed intentional but why raise the bridge if you can see a car out there. There is an emergency stop

      The two cyclists that got caught on bridge were 59, this guy, and 79, the woman who died. I don’t think it’s intentional. In a car you’re not gonna die. On foot or a bike, without enough upper body strength death is a really likely outcome. Certainly the 79 year old walking her bike across did not do this intentionally at all. Doubt this guy did either.

    Many of these incidents appear to be citizen pedestrian errors i.e. ignoring warning signs of barrier crossings, warning sirens, and flashing lights followed by the car appeared to just be sitting there at the seam where the bridge rises. IDK if it's just me, but I like be safe in my surroundings so I move quickly through railroad crossings while staying vigilant and I get away from multiple cars driving in close proximity to other vehicles because I see the potential dangers guess these folks aren't doing that.

The alarm bells ring for 45 seconds with lights flashing, then the pedestrian gates close with another 15 seconds of alarm bells. Then a safety check is done and then it rises like 45 seconds later. Each rising span is around 100 feet.
