Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I'm 63 years old now. At 18 we had a huge snow storm. Toronto hired an extra helper for each truck clearing sidewalks of elderly/disabled. $8.00/hr! Min wage was $2.00! Hired for 3 days. 7AM start. Left yard 7:30. Went to a diner. 1 hour. First house. I hit that packed snow with a gusto! Snow came off in neat, packed sheets! Easy! Told to stop and use up salt on back of truck. Was actually MORE work with that method and I was concerned that possibly elderly would still be somewhat trapped for another day! Soon break time. One hour. Maybe 3 more houses. Lunch. Hour and 15 mins. More houses but this time the 'foreman' spent more time knocking on doors to see if elderly had a son or daughter capable of doing the snow. A game to him. Break. One hour. Couple of more houses. Back to yard. 2:15! I asked what should I do till 3 PM punch out time? Hang out in the bathroom where I found about 20 other guys like myself smoking and killing time. - All this was a defining moment in my life. I never worked in a union environment again! I was downright ashamed of taking that money!
tina davis fire them, and the same will continue,..accountability issues will forever be of a concern, follow the money, and who is in charge, they are even more corrupt
It's just like getting a union job. you have to know someone. Just like getting a job working for the city, you have to know someone. I wonder what those "someone's" get away with as well!
Nope, nowadays it's not like that..all.you have to do is apply and score high on the exam.and do well in the interview. That doesnt mean knowing someone wont give you the extra edge though, as is the case in all walks of life.
I was a City Parks Supervisor, I was lucky if my crews actually worked 3 hours in a 8 hour day. When I put the hammer down on them, I got a call from Human Resources telling me not to make them work. I put in my 2 weeks notice the next day.
the chippers meter is broken, the citys mechanic has been trying to fix it 24 hours a day for over a week now....he said he's close to finding the problem
Yet. We paid our taxes to get our community workers doing their job, and they seem to take longer than usual to clean up the mess from August 6, 2024’s storm. I can’t imagine the frustration of these residents.
There’s a video on here of a town that majority of their city services are all done by private contractors and they save money. The work actually gets done too. They had a survey of how citizens feel of how their city services were and they got a 100% satisfied.
If you follow around the chief interviewed on this video secretly, I'll bet you will see him do an hour or hour and a half of actual work per day at most. This is why most government run offices are all failing. Look at the IRS. There are still millions that have not gotten a Stimulus Check from 2020 and we are in 2022. Yet, the super rich organizations can get things done for them instantly with one phone call. But, we the tax papers sometimes have to wait an eternity to get basic service. Here in New York City, we see city workers doing nothing all day too. They get paid between 25 to 35 dollars an hour to spend most of the day talking to their co-workers unsupervised or on their phones. There is no accountability in government.
This is NOTHING new. This is in EVERY CITY. Come here in Miami. The county workers are sleeping in the trucks in broad daylight until lunch, they eat, go back to sleep or use the company vehicles to take care of PERSONAL business.
Here in Bataan, the City Employees are so happy to have a Job, they even work overtime without pay to Prove they are Worthy of that Job. Even the Mayor of one city will be seen on Saturdays out picking up trash to help keep the streets clean
Brandon sorry I hurt your feelings I wasn't talkin mayors you all them in your governor been a s******* for a long time wake up I know you proud to be from Cleveland I'm proud to be from a s******* in Milwaukee Wisconsin but it's still a s******* I'm honest about it
Not in this city, but in my city, I saw two city workers take 4 hours to change a no parking sign...not the pole, just the sign. Two screws and one sign.
It’s like that with most county workers everywhere. They are enabled by poor leadership. Then they feel entitled by the uniform. Pathetic in every way.
It gets worse than this. City of Toronto had many "shadow employees." These are workers on the payroll, but never show up to work. Also, in the City of Hamilton, road crews were out paving people's residential driveways for extra money, meanwhile getting paid by the city also by the city for work never completed.
Good job. Thanks for bringing this to light I've been complaining about the road crews in Yakima. 3 months for a round about, 1 month to destroy it cause it wasn't properly modeled, then 5 months to complete
I'm 70 yrs old and from Cleveland. As far back as I can remember, it's always been that way. When I grew up and traveled about, I found that it wasn't limited to Cleveland, nor to the US. You should see how "foreign nationals" scam the US government overseas! Think about that whenever your elected officials "need" more money. Could you run your business or family like this?
Just got to make sure that people don't mix this with the guys working on the road where you always SHOULD see at least one person just standing and looking around. That guy is there for a reason, he's the lookout should a potentially dangerous situation approach to warn other workers about said situation. Worked as a wire runner for a time and had this duty thrown at me when I was recovering from a minor injury. Believe me that that job sucks more than doing your actual job. It's boring as hell and hard to keep doing. Think of it like those palace guards who have to stick in one place, but easier because you can move and stuff, but ya still got to be paying attention all the effing time or you get called out for it by any passing big-wigs (mainly OSHA or management).
The director is just as guilty seeing as he will not follow and verify that the work is done and that statement had a very strong feeling of arrogance to it as if he were just too good to actually do his job!
This kind of corruption and fraud is in every department of every city. One example that comes to mind is the city HVAC inspectors who are paid to inspect new installation but would claim the homeowner wasn't home or he called and no one answered the phone, so the homeowner has to re-schedule for another day when in fact the inspector never showed up much less made a call to the resident..
The city official that is getting Red and standing before a News Crew? Hes embarrased and He is a poor excuse for no acountability.... Hes needing fired!!! Semper Fi!!
In the public service, if you start late you have to leave the site early to make up the time due to the fact you cannot be late twice on the same day. We all know this in the public service!
Unfortunately these men make all city workers look bad. I’m a retired city worker (not from this city) and yes we had our share of lazy workers. But we had several hard working men and women ‘giving it their all’ to make sure the service to the city was done properly. Our work force continued to shrink when retired workers weren’t replaced, always excuses of not having the money to hire new workers. So some workers weren’t going to do much more than they did when there were more workers. Public isn’t notified about the worker shortage. So they see these lazy workers and believes all workers are lazy because they feel they aren’t getting services done quickly. And yes their unions cover them. Just a bad situation all around.
They have red light cameras, and cameras on school buses and they should be on every government employee. Or just privatize everything. Maybe something could get accomplished.
I actually had a coworker of mine quit from the City of Cleveland’s City Works department because they would drop them off to do work, her and one other person would do all of the work and the rest would stand around and bullshit around not doing shit. Then her supervisor would take the truck and leave them for a few hours to go god knows where.

They get paid between 25 to 35 dollars an hour to spend most of the day talking to their co-workers unsupervised or on their phones. There is no accountability in government.
That's a big truck to hide while shopping.
This is exactly why most jobs like this should be "bid" out to private companies.
Why don’t these reporters ever film the politicians? They spend more taxpayers than these workers
Prime Soundz No one should be allowed to steal taxpayer money!!!
Robert Fernandez I never once argued against that . These workers steal less money than politicians and politicians write the laws
Prime Soundz You can vote out politicians though.
Robert Fernandez lmao sure you can . If that’s what you wanna believe
Prime Soundz, they spend more taxpayers?
Not just that city, happens in Indianapolis as well.
When that guy says 'this is the exception not the rule' I call BULLSHIT!
This is verry rare cause everyone and their grandma know that Blacks are the hardest working race EVER.
Never shit on your own time, never sweat on city time
😂😂😂😂😂😂
This is NOTHING new. This is in EVERY CITY. Come here in Miami. The county workers are sleeping in the trucks in broad daylight until lunch, they eat, go back to sleep or use the company vehicles to take care of PERSONAL business.
So whats new fire them all plus the foreman whos a ghost check there duty logs ♣
Here in Bataan, the City Employees are so happy to have a Job, they even work overtime without pay to Prove they are Worthy of that Job. Even the Mayor of one city will be seen on Saturdays out picking up trash to help keep the streets clean
The problem is Cleveland is democratically run for hundreds of years
Lies!!! Cleveland has had Republican mayors unlike Chicago
Brandon sorry I hurt your feelings I wasn't talkin mayors you all them in your governor been a s******* for a long time wake up I know you proud to be from Cleveland I'm proud to be from a s******* in Milwaukee Wisconsin but it's still a s******* I'm honest about it
Gordon KAUFERT unmmm I am not from Cleveland but get your facts str8... Ohio has had more Republican governors...
4:00 Nothing will happen.
*They will just run up a $50,000 set of meetings to figure out how to still do nothing about it.
They should all be fired
That director is just as lazy as the employees on the street and obviously nobody is working in that government.
Fire The City Director And Management And Start All Over!
"The Step Latter Effect"
🤔🇱🇷
So, what was the eventual outcome of this, seeing as how it was posted 5 years ago..?!
That's city workers for ya. I seen a streets department crew. 5 guys standing around while 1 guy is using the jackhammer
Not in this city, but in my city, I saw two city workers take 4 hours to change a no parking sign...not the pole, just the sign. Two screws and one sign.
Everytime i drive by a crew like that i see 1 person working and 5 people standing there.
At my job they called me names when I do my best job
At the meeting there be like " boys take a 30 minutes lunch instead of a hour and 15 minute break instead of a 2 hour break " haha...
Hell, that's the same where I live. City crew drives around all day.
This man needs to be fired and investigated , from his response you can tell he's neck deep in the fraud !!!
I say instead of paying these guys by the hour, pay them by the tree and see how fast they work.
It’s like that with most county workers everywhere. They are enabled by poor leadership. Then they feel entitled by the uniform. Pathetic in every way.
Wow! City workers standing around like a bunch of city workers.
It gets worse than this. City of Toronto had many "shadow employees." These are workers on the payroll, but never show up to work. Also, in the City of Hamilton, road crews were out paving people's residential driveways for extra money, meanwhile getting paid by the city also by the city for work never completed.
CULTURE OF INCOMPETENCE !!!! From the old man in the suite to the young man in his neon jacket.
Culture?
@@EVILWAFFLE543 I notice the pattern in the comments as well
Good job. Thanks for bringing this to light I've been complaining about the road crews in Yakima. 3 months for a round about, 1 month to destroy it cause it wasn't properly modeled, then 5 months to complete
A bunch of "dindonuffin's" managing a bunch of "dindonuffin's"
Stfu....where you find that name at "storm front"
you got that right that is the real problem
They’re hiring... go work there racist.
@@isaiahcoleman967 I already got a job and facts aren't racist
I would be bored out of my skull just lazing around when I'm on the clock
Great job by the reporter and his team. Can't say the same for the tree trimmers and their crew.
It’s readily apparent where the problem lies. The fish rots from the head down...
Yep as soon as most of them get the job security, it’s time to relax.
That fool is lying for his workers..fire him first. Get rid of the poison
People need to stop being nosy and worry about themselves.
I keep noticing a common factor on all of these investigative clips... notice it yet...
hahahahahaha
Great! Curious what you’d find them folks in congress doing or not doing.
Damn shame have a good job and can't do the work. Fire their asses all of them including that damn head of public works.
It's amazing a reporter yelling at a man for not doing "A hard days work" . Following city workers around is "a hard days work" ??? 😥😥😥
The director of public works struggles to speak not to sound ghetto
c b 😂 😆 😆amen
Our tax dollars at work with no accountability.
Semper Fi!!
Start from the bottom and work your way up. Time to clean house and trim the dead wood.
Will Smith You got BACKWARDS -- YOU START AT THE TOP AND WORK DOWN. -- LOWER GUYS ON TOTEM POLE JUST DOING WHAT THEY'RE TOLD
Internally we will deal with that! Sounds like bonuses all around to me!
When Nubians are involved, it's always interesting.
In the public service, if you start late you have to leave the site early to make up the time due to the fact you cannot be late twice on the same day. We all know this in the public service!
Can you do the same for Congress? Or the Oval office for that matter.
Excellent reporting from a bulldog reporter. Thank you!
And people want the government in heath care.
What is heath care??
Just a bad situation all around.
we need to protect our jobs for another 20 years so we need to chop only one tree a week, er well thats what the boss said !
They have red light cameras, and cameras on school buses and they should be on every government employee. Or just privatize everything. Maybe something could get accomplished.
Coffee and doughnuts come to mind.
I actually had a coworker of mine quit from the City of Cleveland’s City Works department because they would drop them off to do work, her and one other person would do all of the work and the rest would stand around and bullshit around not doing shit. Then her supervisor would take the truck and leave them for a few hours to go god knows where.
