    This was by far the best of the movies in terms of pacing, budget, and effects. My favorite part of this is actually the arena entrance. Fun fact, all of the arena scenes were filmed in IMAX and when Katniss goes from the black tunnel to the arena it’s a seamless transition from wide screen to full screen IMAX. As an audience member, most people didn’t even pick it up.

    The point of Katniss not making any hard choices is an interesting one and touches on something in the books that I don’t think translated well to the movies.
    Katniss is a tool to all the political leaders around her and they rob her of agency repeatedly, they infact destroy her life for their political gain, resulting in the deaths of many people close to Katniss, leaving her shattered and barely able to function. Peeta also.
    The end of the book is actually really depressing, with her trying to piece together a life with Peeta, whom she doesnt really love but trauma bonded with, knowing she led a pointless rogue mission to try to kill Snow that accomplished nothing but the deaths of her friends and sister…
    It also ties into commentaries on using individuals as tools or symbols of rebellions.

      @@jonsmith5058 of all the YA dystopia books that came out at the time, I think they're unquestionably the best. The characters are better, the love triangle is honestly not as annoying in book as it is in the movie, and the movies just do not get into the nuance there where a lot of it is what she's forced to do and her reactionary emotions. The politics are well done, the rebellion is well done. The "good guys" are flawed as hell. It isn't a clean, simple narrative. Katniss is forced into being a megaphone and doesn't have a lot of agency until she makes some of the HARDEST choices in book three, and she makes them hesitantly at first, some of them arguably very wrongly, and then that last one very definitively. She's an interesting character. So are Peeta and Gale in their own ways. In that genre, the characters and the books are totally working above average.

    I think the rating system is a double edged sword for the tributes. Cause you want a high score for sponsers so you can live, but a high score also puts a target on your back so others will go for you right away - like they did Katniss

    • @MrTevens
      @MrTevens ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It's just for gambling right? Would be the same as having rankings on college football or basketball teams. Low ranked players have higher odds than high ranked players. • @Rougarou99

      Yeah, when James and Mason suggested intentionally getting a low score I was like "That's literally what Johanna Mason did for her game"
      Her approach in hers was to pretend to be shy and meek and then when the game actually started she dropped it and just tore through the rest of the unsuspecting tributes.
      And part of what makes her interesting in this book/movie specifically is that approach only works once. So she has to actually do things like form alliances and stuff, because no one is underestimating her now.

    • @Rougarou99
      @Rougarou99 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@iout No one predicted that the victors would forced to fight in another Game, though. Not to mention that her fighting ability likely wouldn't be effective against some of the Career Victors, who had spent decades training.
      That, along with her known animosity towards the Games and the Capitol, probably opened a window for the Rebellion to convince her to join their cause, if only for her survival.

    Catching Fire was always my favorite book and movie of the series, mainly because I liked how a good portion of it is exploring the world and characters. it's interesting James takes the position that there's not enough murder. That is sort of the idea; Snow knows that he can't continue the Hunger Games as is because the districts are fed up with killing each other. So the 75th Games were meant to be a reminder that the Capital is still in charge and can kill or control whoever they want, regardless of how many alliances they form and how much they fight. The only mistake Snow made was to think that he could keep the rebellion OUTside the Capital, when Plutarch was right under his nose.
    All that to say, James doesn't care about the story he just wants to watch kids violently murder each other because he's a sick bloke am I right

    • @boheyo
      @boheyo ปีที่แล้ว +16

      It just wasn't that good of a plan, like, the original 'you will betray and kill each other because we say so' is a much scarier and relevant concept than 'we'll make a big wave and release the cyber apes'.

    • @adamseidel9780
      @adamseidel9780 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@boheyothis is the correct take.
      It’s weaker conceptually because it starts the trend, completely greatly by the following movies, of the main character having basically no agency and being on a special protected track the entire time. I mean yes, she’s still a cool and tough bow girl, but she’s not involved at all in this massive conspiracy that also happens to revolve entirely around her. But then when the apparently super important objective of her involvement is secured… she films some advertisements and isn’t allowed to actually be involved in anything important. She doesn’t get to make a single choice until literally like the very end of the final movie.
      In the other hand, all the arena machinations are fun, more fun than watching her figure out how to start a fire or whatever, so the good part of the series, the fun and horrifying battle royale action, is better than ever. Which is what’s more important since it’s what’s good about the movies anyway.

    • @micahdye7215
      @micahdye7215 ปีที่แล้ว

      @boheyo I would agree but this doesn’t make much since since the supposed scarier “you will betray and kill each other” failed when katniss and peeta refused to do so, proving the capital wasn’t as powerful. “We’re going to act like you can win this but actually you’re all going to die” is much scarier. Not to mention, all of it was a ruse from Plutarch because he rigged it

    • @ActuallyAnanya
      @ActuallyAnanya ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@adamseidel9780 Katniss being robbed of her agency is the point. Both sides in the story are happy to use her as a tool for their own agendas and basically ruining her entire life. Jennifer Lawrence couldn't really represent this, but Katniss is 16 in the first Games and 17 in the second. She is at most 18 by the time the revolution ends. She is a child being used as a pawn by all the adults around her only to lose the people closest to her repeatedly. This deliberately isn't a story about a "chosen one" doing all the big plot action because that's not how revolutions work in real life. It is always collective, and THG is one of the few series that actually shows that. Just Write did a great video on this topic.

    Gale is definitely more interesting in the books, he's calculating and pragmatic and sees himself as the patriarch of Katniss' family since her father died. As the books go on, he becomes more ruthless and cold, which results in his plan of using bombs hidden inside Sponsor packages dropped on children in an evacuation zone, and then detonate a 2nd explosive to kill the medics and people who rush in to provide aid after the first explosions and make it look like the Capitol had launched the attack, which gets Prim killed.

    The flames that engulf Katniss and Peta as part of their display in the pre-games promotion were originally portrayed as a much hotter, and thus more azure hue of flame; whilst the idea sounded good on paper, in execution it blended a little too much into their costumes, and so the digital artists had to shift the flames down a few kelvins - the next VFX pitch for this sequence hence had the working title of Blue Harvest.

      There was also a scene where the characters’ clothes catch fire for real. In their desperation they recall the safe word that they were taught by the organisers to say in an emergency: “Rodney” (the name of one of the first Hunger Games champions). I disagree that Katniss didn't make difficult choices. She struggles with splitting up early from her allies to survive with Peeta several times. She almost runs away, but then realizes everyone in District 12 and other Districts are still in danger. She regrets not running away when she learns she has to go back to the games. She gives a heartfelt speech about Rue when tensions are high and shes told to follow the script. Everyone around her lying makes her seem like a less active character though

    Met big Warrick on the GC when the fam and I were out fishing in our tinnie about 15 years ago. His jetski died about 30 metres away from us, he called out for a bit of a hand, so we motored over to him and helped get his jetski back to the jetty. We hung around and had a good yarn with him for a half an hour or so while he waited for whoever had the trailer, by the end of the convo it felt like wed known him for years. Was really down to earth and super appreciative for the help. He's a champion of a bloke

    16:16 Well the Quarter Quell isnt usually composed of previous winners, you're right it was a ploy. But they did have something special. If I recall correctly, the 50th HG had TWICE as many tributes per district. Which makes Haymitch's victory even more impressive because he had a 1 in 48 chance of winning instead of the usual 24.
    Edit: Dang I wrote that before I continued with the video and you did mention it LMAO

    Loved these books and movies back in the day. I had a teacher in middle school that made everyone read the first book and we all loved it so I read the other two and loved them as well. Then the movies were announced. The first movie came out during my freshman year of high school and since there were 4 and each one came out one year apart and there are 4 years pc high school that meant I had a yearly tradition in high school. I still love the whole of the last movie and book (the second to last movie is good but not much happens because they split a story in two). Really love the part right after they fight the zombies. I love the idea of fighting an unspeakable horror, escaping, and then ending up having to fight something more normal (peacekeepers). It’s like that section of half life two right after you escape ravenholm and you have to defeat the snipers posted there to contain the zombies

    Ya know, I don't even like Hunger Games very much, but if really bugs me when people who hate it use the complaint of "They barely even do any hunger games!" Like, it's clearly not the entire point of the series. It was the catalyst that started everything off and most important in the first book, abs so after the term became the name of the franchise.
    How many Halo games have nothing to do with the Halo? I don't hear people bitch about that.

    Catching Fire almost has no business being as good as it is - it's everything I think the first movie should have been, and none of the other movies come close to reaching its heights. In a series of mostly 5 to 6/10 movies, Catching Fire is an honest 9 or a 10 from me.
