You also don't expect it here because his face and helmet look very "human". His eyes aren't covered. His skin tone looks healthy. He just looks like a guy in a motorcycle helmet. When Alex Murphy took off his visor in the original he looked ghastly. His skin was stretched taut across a hardware armature and fixed with bolts and wires. It was obvious from day one that he was a robot with a bit of flesh grafted on. I really can't blame Remake Robo for thinking he was in a suit.
@lisah-p8474 The original dealt really well with the "just a brain and some organs" idea without really showing it and leaving it to the imagination with the "build" scene from his perspective. Robocop himself even mentions how his face is "Made to honour him" and very likely a prostethic as well. (Not sure if that was in RC2 or RC1 right now) (edited for a small correction)

Imagine if in Iron Man 1, Tony spends the entire film in the silver MK.2 suit, and they have the scene where he considers putting it in its iconic red and yellow colors only for him to go "Nah, that's stupid" That's how I feel about the suit in this movie.
More like if they took Extremis, and instead of setting it up into a Superior Iron Man-style hijacking reveal spanning the next several Avengers movies that culminates in Civil War, they just gave it to Pepper and then didn't even let her be a superhero. I hurt about as much on IM3 as I do with the suit colors of 2014, which probably means I care too much about the Robocop suit colors
Watching Iron Man as a child with no knowledge of comics, I was disappointed when he painted the suit as I thought the colours looked ugly and the original sleek silver was much nicer. Even with vastly improved comics knowledge I still stand by that, tbh.
@ellaisplotting Eh, I think the red and yellow works for his character, especially in that first film. Tony is a narcissist to a fault. He wants to be seen, so of course, when he creates this super mech suit, he's gonna put it in the gaudiest colors imaginable.

Not going to lie, I have a soft spot for this one. Completely different vibe from the original -- that scene where they show him what's left of his body was actually amazing.
We're only **four** years away from having Adam Jensen style stabby arms and retractable sunglasses. You never asked for this but between him and Murphy we're headed for a cyborg future.
Having not watched the video: I just realized that not having Robocop’s face horribly fused to the surrounding casing really takes away from the visceral nature of his hellish existence.
@@skepticalbadgeryep! "Get rid of the arm, full body prosthesis!" They synthesized a dead man's face in the original and stretched it over a robot to sell, because it was the 80s, and Bob Morton needed more coke and hooker money. Much more unsettling than a brain enclosure.
I originally didn't give this movie a chance because I don't think they should be remaking classics and I expected it to just be a lame updated action movie with bad CGI. But eventually I ended up borrowing a Blue Ray copy off a friend and honestly, it was a far better film than I’d anticipated with a much more nuanced story. Yes, it had better special effects, but it wasn't all CGI action, and what CGI there was was extremely well done, especially the scene where they strip away all his parts to reveal that the only organs they’d harvested were his lungs and hand. This was probably why the original title was initially going to be Blue Harvest which coincidentally was also the working title for the 1977 film Star Wars.
As someone that grew up loving robocop i found the reboot to be fun. Its not a great movie, but as just a fun action movie with some nostalgia elements i liked it!
I watched this for the first time the other day. I thought the prototype suit was really cool until they painted it black. Also that scene where they first reveal what is left of him is fantastic.
James had me in tears when he said, "Yeah... he beats up a bemulleted Hugh Jackman!" That's a sentence I never thought I'd hear but now one that I can't live without 😅
The scene showing he's just a face with a sack of organs has always stuck with me. The orginal had a blood bath of killing but that scene just hits different because it makes you think about at what point are you still your human self if pieces of you are stripped away and replaced with robotics. Maybe it's a little too real for most people in comparison to the original with bloody killings, a guy getting his dick shot off and a guy getting wrecked by toxic waste.
It's interesting to note that the original Robocop was also meant to fast and nimble like this one in the remake. But because the suit was bulky and heavy, Peter Weller and his mime coach had to quickly change his movements into more slower movements like what we ended up seeing in the original.
they ramp up prize for game . but iam pretty sure treyon done decent game . looks so far better then any robocop game since robocop vs terminator hope they improve gameplay loop , i dont liked scripted sequences in resistance but sneaking around terminators with flametrower was realy fun
The single greatest scene in this movie is when they pull away all the parts and you see how much is actually left of Murphy. That was genuinely shocking.

How about a Gary Oldman retrospective? Or any retrospective of an actor, actress, or director you’d want to do a retrospective on? Even a Rodney retrospective would be cool.
Slight tangent on the Assassin's Creed movie as a huge fun of the games: such a missed opportunity. I know that the modern day storyline with Abstergo is also a part of the games, but the reason you play an AC title is to parkour through old cities and meet historical figures, and the movie had to dedicate so much time to setting up the Abstergo stuff at the expense of seeing an Assassin story during the Spanish Inquisition. By the movie had come out, even the games had started deemphasizing the modern storylines (it's still there, but you can usually ignore it), and I think that a better way to set it up may have been to start the movie with like a corporate play testing of the new Abstergo AC game (which they started having be an in-game thing around AC III Liberation I believe), and then have some hackers get into the system and take the protagonist into the un-sanitized version of their ancestor's journey. Saying it out loud, I'm realizing how could kind of be a Robocop-esque commentary on the way history is often rewritten or suppressed by big institutions to justify their own power...plus parkour and Ben Franklin.
I remember seeing this in theaters with my dad when it came out and the scene where Murphy is shown what is left of his body always stuck with me. I wish the studio actually let them make a movie with that dark tone and R rating.
Remember seeing this at the cinema...i say remember, because i defiantly did, could i forgot EVERYTHING about this. I was shocked when they listed off the cast "wait THEY were in this?!"
That's why they used his voice again in Robocop: Rogue City... If even a mere videogame could be a strong indicator of ANYTHING, then it would remind us of WHY it is so hella damn important to always stick with the source material. I really felt like the soul of the original movie was killed by corporate tinkering in the remake. Not that the actors did a bad job, or the outfit designers, or the CGI engineers. It's just so soulless, safe, and doesn't point enough fingers at corporate greed and shortcomings.

Personally speaking, I was quite surprised to learn that this film was only 9 years old. For some reason I thought this film came out sometime around 2008-2009.
His face looked stupid in the suit / helmet thing. Original Robocop Paul Veroven was very aware that the teeth and jaw had to be perfect to make it look cool.
Ironically I think this films downfall is the fact that it’s not terrible or great? It’s the one thing you don’t want for your film: mediocre at best. It instantly relegates this to being forgotten. Plus not only does the black ruin the iconic look of the character but their incessant need to show his full face makes it feel like he’s just a special forces soldier in a suit, not THE iconic film cyborg that Robo-Cop is.
Watching this movie, I feel like the director was trying to make a statement about how hollywood reanimates franchises and they’re so far removed from themselves. I can’t explain it but, but there’s an odd air about it that feels intentional, like the director is trying to sneak it past the producers but it doesn’t quite translate.
I think this is a really good and underrated remake, the climax feels a bit to “video game cut scene”, and Michael Keaton‘s villain turn doesn’t make much sense, but I like what they explored with Robocop‘s family (that felt different and fresh), it has a great cast & performances, and all the stuff with prosthetic and Murphy seeing what’s left with his body was very scary, tragic, and interesting at the same time.
Oh yeah, that was definitely unnerving when they stripped him down to head, lungs, and hand. I can't even imagine the levels of "phantom body syndrome" he must have gone through. Feeling like a you have a little itch on your leg but you ain't got no legs, Lieutenant Dan! (sorry, I couldn't stop myself)
Isn’t that the biggest issue though? The studio NOT wanting to separate it and insisting on callbacks to the original? So much relying on making sure that the audience knew for a fact without a shadow of a doubt that it was a remake of the original.
This review is so bang-on for my own feelings when this came out. Not at all a bad movie, moments and seeds of really great ideas that expanded or went in different, interesting directions than the original, but none of which felt fully executed and the humorous satire was sorely missed (though arguably wouldn't work anyway without the over-the-top violence as counter-balance). The PG-13 rating and weird shitting on the OG design were nail in the coffin ideas for sure. It's too bad this movie happened pre-Deadpool, I think this same script now would've been executed much better. Hopefully these new projects follow the lead of Rogue City and don't disappoint.
The remake is a solid movie on it's own terms. It has more on its mind than many other tentpoles we get today. I also think it's a bit unfair to hold it up against it's powerhouse classic progenitor, because it was never the intention to emulate Verhoeven's film, not in style nor tone. The remake is not a comic book or a satirical romp. It's more Robocop by way of Black Mirror. It's focus is on the science of the fiction and the inhumanity behind it that clashes with the heart and human spirit of man. I get that it was hampered by studio meddling, but Pedilha imo still pulled off a worthwhile film that stands on its own. No need to find Verhoeven's film inside a remake that wasn't trying to be that.
Nah. This is what "update for modern audiences" should mean. It makes sense enough, and it poses a lot of good questions about what we are as humans and biological computers. Do we react, and then invent a reason why we acted? Are we in control, or are we simply pretending? Is it partial or total? Yea. It is a good movie, and everyone should think it is. Except the black suit. That was a face-slap moment.
Peter Weller at that Star Trek into Darkness premiere reminded me of how good he was in that movie and how cool it was for JJ Abrams to put him in such a big important part in 2013.
Definitely wanting a "movie reboots that shouldn't have been made" segment in the future now. Lol Also a side note, seeing the visor in the thumbnail gave me Snake Eyes PTSD.

He's just accepted his new condition as a head with plastic-coated lungs. Absolutely terrified me back in the day. But, it's probably the one moment in the movie I actually remembered.

Same in NZ, I'd never given it a second thought until recently. I guess it does sound a bit odd
I've liked Kinnaman in just about every role he's been in since The Killing.
The suit looks so cool with the original colors!
In the original robocop you only hear the robocop theme twice! And both times its completely earned and comes in with thunderous excitement
Basil Poledouris' score for RobotCop is great, but his score for Conan The Barbarian was absolutely sweeping, best score ever
100%. No excuse for not using the Robocop theme. That goes for Robocop 2 as well.

The terrible Aku!!!
I described CTB as film you could watch with no dialogue. Just the visuals and the music is enough to tell a story.
No love for No Man's Land?
Imagine if in Iron Man 1, Tony spends the entire film in the silver MK.2 suit, and they have the scene where he considers putting it in its iconic red and yellow colors only for him to go "Nah, that's stupid"
That's how I feel about the suit in this movie.
Iron Man if it was directed by Bryan Singer
Watching Iron Man as a child with no knowledge of comics, I was disappointed when he painted the suit as I thought the colours looked ugly and the original sleek silver was much nicer. Even with vastly improved comics knowledge I still stand by that, tbh.
@ellaisplotting Eh, I think the red and yellow works for his character, especially in that first film. Tony is a narcissist to a fault. He wants to be seen, so of course, when he creates this super mech suit, he's gonna put it in the gaudiest colors imaginable.
I went to see the remake because of Jose Padilha
He directed the Brazillian movie ELITE SQUAD, which is a very influential movie in my country
And with all things considered, I think he did a really good job as a director in the remake
I really liked his style. I just wish it was R-Rated
Even the director wanted that way, and tried to convince the studio of that
❤original movie was better
I like when Maso does a local joke so that i can chuckle and pretend i understand it.
I’ve been with you guys for a few years now and this is seriously the first time I’ve been in a group waiting on a video to premiere. I didn’t even know y’all did this!
Not going to lie, I have a soft spot for this one. Completely different vibe from the original -- that scene where they show him what's left of his body was actually amazing.
The fact this movie takes place 5 years in the future makes me feel old
We're only **four** years away from having Adam Jensen style stabby arms and retractable sunglasses. You never asked for this but between him and Murphy we're headed for a cyborg future.

I forget there was a silver suit in this movie. You’re absolutely spot on about the suit, so unbelievably spot on.
Having not watched the video: I just realized that not having Robocop’s face horribly fused to the surrounding casing really takes away from the visceral nature of his hellish existence.
Yeah, I see what they were going for with the exposed brain in the glass shell, but it's not as nightmarish as the stretched skin.
@@hollandscottthomasExcept that's not his real face. It's synthetic.
@@skepticalbadgeryep! "Get rid of the arm, full body prosthesis!"
They synthesized a dead man's face in the original and stretched it over a robot to sell, because it was the 80s, and Bob Morton needed more coke and hooker money.
Gary Oldman is one of the greatest actors of our generation.
Also: THE SKY IS BLUE
And 13 days younger than Gary Numan.
Robocop Rogue City is rough around the edges, but it's fun shooter with a ton of fan service. It's definitely worth checking out.
I watched this for the first time the other day. I thought the prototype suit was really cool until they painted it black. Also that scene where they first reveal what is left of him is fantastic.
James had me in tears when he said, "Yeah... he beats up a bemulleted Hugh Jackman!"

"Awwww c'mon mate" is my favourite part of any MSM video with Maso
I'm sad he never said "dead or alive, I'll be back, come with me if you want to creep"
Crazy that they were able to get Lawrence Fishburne for this Robocop film.
It was actually Morgan Freeman. That’s a common mistake people make.

It's interesting to note that the original Robocop was also meant to fast and nimble like this one in the remake. But because the suit was bulky and heavy, Peter Weller and his mime coach had to quickly change his movements into more slower movements like what we ended up seeing in the original.
That Jeff Jarrett reference is funny as Robocop has a wrestling connection with Sting

I actually enjoyed this movie. Not as good as the original. I liked the family relationship of Alex, his wife, and kid that the original skipped over. Plus the ED-209's seemed like something that could exist in the near future because of drones and the combat UAV's the military currently uses.
Wish Robocop 2 had explored his family stuff more than not at all.
How about a Gary Oldman retrospective? Or any retrospective of an actor, actress, or director you’d want to do a retrospective on? Even a Rodney retrospective would be cool.

Robocop 2014 has the major issue where the whole time you are thinking, "Man, I would love to be watching the OG Robocop right now."
Gary Oldman could play every character in a movie about his life
God, yes-- painting the suit black was the stupidest move. It went from looking like a pretty convincing robot to just another guy in a supersuit.
This film absolutely did not have to be a RoboCop remake. Could have been its own thing and probably would have been better off for it.
Can’t believe you guys have reviewed every film. What will you do now?
I remember seeing this in theaters with my dad when it came out and the scene where Murphy is shown what is left of his body always stuck with me. I wish the studio actually let them make a movie with that dark tone and R rating.

Tbf, I think him being black and looking generic kinda fits. He was designed by a soulless corporation, and that seems like something they'd do
The fact Peter Wellers voice essentially never changed is impressive
That's why they used his voice again in Robocop: Rogue City...
If even a mere videogame could be a strong indicator of ANYTHING, then it would remind us of WHY it is so hella damn important to always stick with the source material.

I really felt like the soul of the original movie was killed by corporate tinkering in the remake. Not that the actors did a bad job, or the outfit designers, or the CGI engineers. It's just so soulless, safe, and doesn't point enough fingers at corporate greed and shortcomings.

Holy christ this reboot is almost 10 years old
Blows my mind.
I wholeheartedly agree with Mr. Peter Weller about remakes. Robocop is on that list.
I remeber likeing this movie when it came out. The scene where they remove basically his whole body really sticks with you.

This robot cop is the George Clooney's Batman of robocop.

Is 8:38 in the movie? For a brief second you see a guy in a red body warmer then a guy passes the camera and he is in full suit.
Lol
