This is one of my favorite Inkscape tutorials (and I've watched a TON). I love how well you explain things. I can take the things you show here and use them in so many different designs.
I remember when i was first learning how to use inkscape and illustrator in 2014. I came across this video and it seem difficult at that time. But now in 2020 doing what is shown in this video is so so easy - Keep drawing and practicing and you’ll get better 💚🤎
these videos are 100 times more valuable than those those 50 dollar books at the bookstore that teach you how to use programs that cost 1000 dollars because Inkscape is free. Plus its so much easier to learn things from videos. I looked online to see if there was a way to vary the line width. And all I found was posts that seemed to indicate it would be a nice feature to add.
Mind blown!! I teach a basics inkscape class on the beizer tool. Mainly to help folks get images ready for vinyl cutting and laser cutting and engraving. I needed a little "flourish" for one of my designs. I learned so much in this video! Several new techniques and ideas. I will share these and of course credit you. Thanks!
i am a graphic designer and used to work with illustrator, indesign, quarkxpress and many more, i am off of work for 6 years now and can not afford the illustrator or any of the others. but this program is great! thanks for the tutorials.
Well its nice to have such a great program for free but its little bit time consuming as compare to illustrator i think in illustrator you can do it way faster and comfortably.
Thanks for your excellent tutorial. I was "afraid" to use Inkscape because I didn't know what kind of program it was. You make it look easy. Thanks again.
Thank you for this tutorial... it was extremely helpful... I love how you explain it, so simply... very clear and understandable... please keep them coming... you are an excellent instructor :)
Actually I just figured it out. Initially I was following your instructions and set the shape to triangle. Then I changed it to none. And changed the width of the stroke in fill & stroke. Working perfectly!
You are really good at manipulating the nodes, very impressive! I learned a ton from this video, including things I had seen other tutorials for and was unable to figure out. BTW, that was magical how you made that leaf appear from the end of the spiro, I had no idea what you were going to do and suddenly a perfect leaf shape pops out!! Thanks so much for sharing, I hope you are able to share more in the future.
2:08 In Inkscape 1.0, you can still achieve that by direct drawing, or you can add the effect to an existing path using the “Spiro spline” and “Power stroke” path effects.
5:59 The one you’ve got enabled is “Even/Odd” fill. The one you want is called “Nonzero Winding Number” fill. The rule for deciding whether an area is to be filled is to draw a line from within that area out to infinity in any direction, and see how many times it crosses the edge of the shape (aka the “winding number”). For even/odd fill, the area is filled if the line crosses an odd number of edges, left empty if the number is even. For the nonzero winding number rule, the area is filled if the line crosses any edges at all.
This one of the best tutorials I have ever seen on youtube! I wish more tutorials for blender wear like this, Thanks so much. BTW love the accent, it helped me pay better attention. Keep the great tutorials ^_~
In version 9 the triangle in / out does something different. You'll need draw a triangle shape pointing to the left of the screen, copy it to the clipboard and use shape from clipboard instead. This forces a “pattern along path” effect -- Hope that saves someone a headache.
thank you! its certainly different in 2017 version. however i find its triangle to the right so you get thicker stems towards the left (that is if you're going from left to right). anyways, thank you.
I wish it was the way it was in this. I tried to do it the exact way you did and it wasn't working. So I read the comments that the new versions don't work that way. I wish they did. I like the way it just made the curlys.
Actually whatever end you want the skinny end to be on is the way you point the triangle. So if you need the skinny end of the flourish to be on the right then point the triangle to the right copy to clipboard and when you use the bezier pen use from clipboard instead of a triangle. Thanks, Chris your tip helped.
Great tutorial! I really need to master using such tools to create patterns and such and things like this help. I have a question: Around 5:53, you use a short-cut that I hear as "Ctrl-Shift-N-F" to open all of the option panels(which is exactly what I want to happen). When I use this short-cut, it either opens the layer panel or it opens a new document with the stroke panel open. And I doing this wrong? If not can you tell me where the menu option is(non-short-cut version)?
whats the difference between the mm, cm... and the others?? what i mean is that then you change it from one to the other how does that effect the spirally shapes, in this case???
Thanks for a great video! How do you make the curves have the same width? I just need to do a wavy line. I need for it to be of equal width start to finish. Thanks.
The Path Effect editor on the version 0,91 that I have is not as detailed as what is on this video. where can I adjust the thickness of the stem? Thanks.
if you used 'triangle in' then there should be a handle node to adjust thickness at the start of your line. so just pull it out a bit with the node selection tool. (It will be directly on top of the first node of your line)
Once you open the 'Path Effect Editor' there should be two things in the 'Effect list' - 'Spiro Spline' and 'Pattern Along Path'. Make sure that the 'Pattern Along Path' is highlighted then the options should be visible in the 'Current Effect' box just below it.
OMG making that in Adobe illustrator is so easy, I don't know, may be i am feeling easy but pen tool is really awesome for this kind of thing in illustrator.
Now that I've added a Pattern along a path, how do prevent that effect from being added every path I create in the future? Is it a default effect that Inkscape adds to all paths?
Great video...I am now inspired to start...this is first day using inkscape. I want to use it to create design for t-shirts as i cannot afford illustrator..any tips ?
Tip: You can copy a horizontal leaf to the clipboard; and then, in the Bézier menú, set a high Smoothing and select the Shape "From clipboard" Result: You can easily draw leaves with the Bézier tool.
Thanks for the Info. When I draw, the width of the line is very thin, and unable to increase it. Unable to change in Stroke style, but able to increase if I keep shape as "none" instead of triangle in/out. Is there anything Iam missing?
srisindhu vinod I'm having the same trouble when I use the current version. I have an old version (0.48) that matches the one in the tutorial here and everything works just as he describes. If all else fails, you can download the old version. I've posted in a couple of forums asking how to do such things in today's version. If/when I get an answer, I'll let you know.
EyeLean5280 I just figured it out, mine was also really thin, i tried changing the fill and stroke, nothing. i double clicked on it so that the nodes show, zoom in close, i clicked on the pink/purple node and i pulled it to the right, and it adjusted the width of the line. I hope you understand what i mean :) good luck
+srisindhu vinod One work around is to create a series of triangles of various widths to be used in the flourish. Copy each as needed and select "from clipboard" when making scroll. However, the length of the triangle is an important factor. The resulting scroll still cannot be adjusted in thickness: you have to use Path > Object to Path.
hey thanks the video helped alot..but my path text editor dousnt look like urs i click it and it just gives me options(Bend, consturct grid, gears,ex...) so i cant change the width:/ help please! thanks
Hello Inkthisscape, I'm trying to shape a perfect outline for a 3" fishing lure. The outline itself is crucial to how the lure will perform in the water, and I'm wasting paper and lead trying to get it just right. Is there a certain program you would recommend for this? There are basically no straight lines, just alot of subtle curves.
I can never get the handles to show up when in spiral mode. The straight line mode works fine and in able to drag and see the handles. I have been struggling with this for 3 hours. Anyone ha e a suggestion?
+Geek Charm Same here! Dammit! No ability to adjust the width with that. I can't get Extensions>Generate from Path>Pattern Along A Path to work either! Someone please help with this!!! Thank you
+Geek Charm OK, HERE'S THE ANSWER: The "Powerstroke" path effect has a purple triangle control node, if you click on it with the "edit path by nodes" (path select) tool. If you drag that purple triangle around, you can affect the starting width of the triangle shape placed along a spiral path, for instance. (I still cannot figure how to get numeric control of this starting width, as the xml window does not seem to have parameters, but at least you have some control.) Let me know how it works for you, and best of luck!
Great video. I don't think I've seen this question in the comment yet. On the "main stem," how did you get the empty space that seems to cut the stem in half? Is that an effect applied to one path, or did you simply create an exact copy and move it along side? Thanks
Thanks for an awesome tutorial. Which version of inkscape are you using? I downloaded .48 and I don't seem to have the 'handles' when I use the bezier.
What you did not show is how you created the "light effect" by having a path run through the main branch. Did you just duplicate the main branch, made the duplicate thinner and moved it around?
Love your video. Question; when I print out my design it comes out blurry. What am I doing wrong? Thank you so much for your help and for putting this video together.
Thank you so much for the video.. I love these designs, I am thinking I can do this.. If you are interested, here is some useful criticism for those of us who learn visually. That would be to show us the actual buttons to push for the effects and then flash onscreen at the bottom out of the way the shortcut used for the effect. But it is ok if you don't want to do that.. I will survive. :) Thank you so much for taking the time to help us folks out here that just need some help.. :) I am in love with this program.
This is one of my favorite Inkscape tutorials (and I've watched a TON). I love how well you explain things. I can take the things you show here and use them in so many different designs.
I'm just learning how to use inkscape and the way you explain and show us is amazing! So slow and well explanatory. Thank you!
I remember when i was first learning how to use inkscape and illustrator in 2014. I came across this video and it seem difficult at that time. But now in 2020 doing what is shown in this video is so so easy - Keep drawing and practicing and you’ll get better 💚🤎

You have just enlightened me! I used to do these shapes with the standard bezier tool. Thanks forever!!
I LOVE flourishes & swirls! I'm new to Inkscape, so it's nice to know how to make these! Thanks!
Thanks!
Great tute. Nice n simple focusing on a hand full of tools and clearly explaining what your doing and why.
i am a graphic designer and used to work with illustrator, indesign, quarkxpress and many more, i am off of work for 6 years now and can not afford the illustrator or any of the others. but this program is great! thanks for the tutorials.

Your English is fine, I understood you perfectly. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us.
Thanks so much for this tutorial! This is exactly what I wanted to learn. So handy to have a video that explains it with ease.
An extremely useful and clearly described video. In addition, there are a number of short cuts. Several 'light bulb' moments. Many thanks, Davina

Nice tutorial. Enjoyed watching it -It was magical to see you craft that piece of art !
Wow! I never would have thought of that. Great set of techniques. Thanks for the tutorial.
Nice tutorial and your flourish style is just what I needed to know for a invitation I am making. Great! Thanks!!
2:08 In Inkscape 1.0, you can still achieve that by direct drawing, or you can add the effect to an existing path using the “Spiro spline” and “Power stroke” path effects.
I just wanted to say a very big thank you! you made this very easy for everyone.

Ohmylanta THANK YOU! I have been trying to make frames for monogrames and this video helped me so much!
Most enjoyable tutorial and I learned a lot, thank you.
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful tutorial! I can't wait to try this!
Flourishes are such beautiful designs. You make them look so easy. My project of the day, learn about creating flourish designs.
Brilliant, thanks very much for such a lovely clear tutorial.
Thank you for this. Also agree with a previous comment - a beautiful voice, enviable enunciation!
Very nice video. Thanks man. Keep up the great work!
Thank you.
Knowledge increased very much.
I will refer to this.
fabulous - this is hell of an excellent tutorial - thanks

That looks great. Im getting the kids to do one after school!

I really don't understand what you mean chris hidden
Actually whatever end you want the skinny end to be on is the way you point the triangle. So if you need the skinny end of the flourish to be on the right then point the triangle to the right copy to clipboard and when you use the bezier pen use from clipboard instead of a triangle. Thanks, Chris your tip helped.
Also the skinny you make the triangle the more realistic the vine looks.
Ah...that makes sense. Always seems so obvious once the question is answered! Thanks for the reply.
Thank you thank you thank you! :) I'm trying to learn Inkscape and this tutorial helped the most so far! :)
Thanks heaps! Really really helpful and clear presentation.
When I right click all I get is a jagged hair line. How do I get a thicker smoother line as when I do what you said, it didn't work?
Thank you.
Thanks, this is a great tutorial for getting to know the bezier tool.
Thanks for sharing! Really wonderful tutorial.
thanks, it was so easy to follow, i learn alot from this tutorial
Thank you for tutorial. 3:11 you showing how to thicken the line, my is not getting thick after changing the value, any idea why? Thank you

whats the difference between the mm, cm... and the others?? what i mean is that then you change it from one to the other how does that effect the spirally shapes, in this case???
got problems with the width for to path of the main stem. i can't make it thicker.
Manuel Martin same here :P
+Manuel Martin
11/3/2015: same problem. Is there now a bug with this feature?
Very nice! I'd like to know how you did the two-part main stem in the example picture...
This is excellent and very helpful. Do you ever make damask patterns like you would see in an antique wallpaper? I'd love to see a tutorial for that.
Thanks guy. I go to graphic school, so it's really helpful. ;)
You've really opened my eyes to some tools I didn't know existed! Thank you! :)
Thanks for a great video! How do you make the curves have the same width? I just need to do a wavy line. I need for it to be of equal width start to finish. Thanks.
Pretty sweet ways to use the bezier tool! Thanks a lot man :)
Excellent Inkscape tutorial, thanks.
It doesn't allow me to expand the width of the line
help??
by doing what? clicking on the ball does nothing. Right clicking on it brings up a menu but width changing is not on it.
@Tom Debridge It's work, thanks dude... just hold click and drag that point
I love this! Thank you so much :) I subscribed. I'm your 1000th follower!

Can't get the line width to change in the path effect editor using the triangle in and triangle out settings with the bezier tool.
me either. spiral spline doesnt have editing options. Using a mac
The new version does not do the same cool vine like thing he did. It is windows too. I think.
Great tutorial. I picked up a few tips.
Good video tutorial. Thank you for sharing.

OMG making that in Adobe illustrator is so easy,
I don't know, may be i am feeling easy but pen tool
is really awesome for this kind of thing in illustrator.
Very nice! Very helpful!
Thanks for sharing.
Been looking for that 'tool' or technique for a while. Thank you! lol
thanks brother! got me out of this swirl chamber i was stuck in from days :)
Now that I've added a Pattern along a path, how do prevent that effect from being added every path I create in the future? Is it a default effect that Inkscape adds to all paths?
within the first minute this became useful. ty.
brilliant straightforward tutorial

correction: once you create the scroll using "from clipboard," the width feature in the Path Effects dialog can be used.
which version are u useing ver 9,1 path effects are different . can u help
I will subscribe when you make more videos. Love the quality, but lacks quantity. Thank-you.

Can't afford "Illustrator". Just discovered "Inkscape"
Thank you for this tutorial.
