Wonderful tutorial, but for some reason when I select everything I can union them together, Why is that? What am I doing wrong? Do I need to convert the letter to an object or something?

You make it look soooo easy, but everytime I hit "difference" nothing happens! I've watched and rewatched the video, so I don't know what I'm doing wrong. :(

In case anyone else has the same issue, one of my objects was "grouped" as I'm a newbie who didn't know any better. When I tried the path difference, the bottom of the screen was saying "...objects of types Path, Group". Path > Difference will only work if it says "objects of types Path". I had to find the objects I grouped and ungroup them. You may also need to go to Path > Object To Path. Once everything is a "path", then Path > Difference will work.
