Very helpful. I used inscape to create SVG files this way and used them to print the face silhouette with 2 black gray and white filaments. The effect is really nice.

Nice job. I've found that it is easier to just reduce the colors to 2 or 3 using a raster program while the file is still a raster. I then do trace in Inkscape.

hello, when i select path trace bitmap, nothing pops up. even if i do it with the command buttons, i do not get a window open like you do. is there a step i am missing to show that window?>

Hi Troy, I have been tryin to turn my profile picture into a vector and the instructions are not working for me.
I am having trouble removing the brightness cutoff at the top under single scan so all I get is one scan. How to I uncheck that?

Tried to create Cricut account but it is only available for Americans, Canadians, and UK apparently. To bad if your an Aussie or from some other part of the world. Ya get that I guess.
thanks so much.. really helped me in making scroll saw patterns from an image. but i did run into a challenge. i found a pretty good layer which can is close to the actual image but a major part (A detail i want) is on another layer (an eyebrow in my case). so the question is how do i take a detail from one layer and paste into another. could you please let me know.

So, what you did here in the video worked only once for me, the very first time I imported a picture. Now, when I go to UNGROUP any other picture, there are no layers. Even shutting down, restarting or waiting a day does not work. Help?
You can remove the background in Inkscape as well

dumb question. I can't seem to get the photo into inkscape to start with
I am a scroller (someone that cuts wood with a scroll saw), and I am trying to figure out an issue but cant find anything on it. After i trace out my portrait; and cut the background out, i want to use the trace Bitmap tool. The problem i have is that when i try to do this, the background is back. Do you happen to know how to fix this issue?
This is a wonderful tutorial but I have one problem. When I follow the instructions after I ungroup I only get one copy why?
The newer versions of Inkscape have single and multiple scan tabs. I use single for simple tracings and the multiple tab for color or grays (like here). Make sure you can choose the number of scans so you know your on the multiple scan tab. Make sure you have stack scans selected.

When I try to clean up the image and select the spots to delete it deletes the entire image. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks, do you know what version of Inkscape you have, I downloaded Inkscape but must have a different version as I do not have as many options as you - very apparent in "Trace Bitmap" - my version looks nothing like yours.

This is probably a long shot since this vid is 3yrs old. But I find I can't get the amount of detail i want from just one "scan" . Is there a way to combine the last two "scans" you had there to be able to show more of the detail that her hair would've showed? I always find two images that i wish I could fuse together to get more detail, but have no clue how to create it.
You can place one of the scans on top of the other. Then select the two, then Group under Objects.

I can't delete the nods. How are you deleting them.?
Click on them and hit delete.
It's very simple. You have to use a bitmap picture for it to work. That's why it says "trace bitmap". If you use jpeg or any other format it's not gonna work.

sad/// doesnt work for one bit.. cant get an update or press oke and get inkscape to do something....also getting a whole other menu when dragging or opening so maybe this is an old version of inkscape?
Make sure you downloaded from Inkscape.org, nowhere else.
Ok I figured out the ungroup, but I don't have Vector option in my design space, it just says upload image. I saved image but when I go to upload it it's not there!! Spend half my day trying to figure it out!! Any help would b so appreciated!!!

How are you deleting all the pixels/nodes? And filing in the areas with black? I have tried and tried and tried and CANNOT delete those nodes! When I try to delete them it deletes the whole pic and yes I am drawing a box/rectangle around just the spot I am trying to delete.
+Willow Bend Keep in mind you are working with paths, as in the "path" your blade or pen will move along. Take the letter "O" for example. There is an inside path and an outside path. If I delete the nodes that make up the center cut-out (aka the inside path as I call it) then it becomes a solid shape. Hope that helps.

Inkscape can run on a Raspberry Pi... You'd have to be using something really fucked up.
upon ungroup i dont get any layers except for one

I am not real familiar with Autocad. The last version I used was version 1.1 in 1986 :D I'm pretty sure it can import SVG files, though.
