Great tutorial! I needed to make some vintage looking swirls for a outdoor park setting wedding invitation. I couldn't visualize just how and this gave me the courage to do make them myself. Discovering Inkscape for the first time and enjoying it! Many thanks!!

Oh I love that swirl. I got lost in what you were doing when you got to the leaves, so I will have to watch again. I will certainly want to do this. Those flowers are fantastic.

The vlogger is using an older version of Inkscape. In order to make a path thicker, we now simply switch to the "Edit Paths by Nodes" tool and use the pink diamond node at the beginning of the path to adjust thickness.

In the software that I have (inkscape 0.91) if i add a swirl from a bezier or free-handlines, the option that is available from the menu is Path->Path Effects (CTRL+SHIFT+7) which brings up the dialog that you mention. However it's quite different in that it doesn't by default have have the "pattern along path" in the list, it has spiro spline and power stroke. you must then go and add, using the + icon, a pattern along path, but on changing the pattern copies to "single stretched" and the width to something like 8 it has no effect on the image, what am i doing wrong with this newer version of the software? Thanks for your help.. also I've seen the suggestion below about using "Edit Paths by Nodes" and using the pink diamond to adjust, but I cant see any pink diamond on the design that would allow that effect

Just trying to find the correct tool and its sizing are simply too convoluted and difficult for a beginner. I have been trying to get things up but I am struggling to find all the parts to the whole. Thanks for helping.

Hi Ken, I have watched many of your videos, but don't see anything on basic tool preferences. The latest version that I have downloaded does not have defaults set up for the pen tool, or the calligraphy tool. So when I try to draw lines, I cannot see them until I choose a fill and a stroke. I have to do this for each object that I draw one at a time. In the old version, I could at least see the temporary lines while using tools, but now nothing. Any suggestions on a video to watch to perform basic system preferences?
