Great video! Have you ever tried 3D designing and printing a splitting machine which uses cutter knife blades? I think that may be a game changer in the budget of everyone starting with leathercraft.

Thanks! I have seen some printed strap cutters but I do wonder whether a splitting machine could be made strong enough from printed materials. I can already think of some ideas for a simplified version and might give designing it a go in the future.

Excellent topic. I was 3d printing before I got into leather craft so it was natural for me to make some tools, jigs, and patterns using that skill. I hadn't though of that offset jig, though. I'll be making a couple of those today, thanks!

Thanks! I really like designing printed parts as they can be very versatile. I plan to explore this topic a lot more.

One of my most useful prints is simple rectangular bars for marking off various margins: 5mm, 10mm, 15mm, and 20mm. Glue spatulas are also nice. 90-degree bump jigs, too.

I will have to try them too once I get better access to a printer.

A pullout board is almost necessary on extra thick leather if you're chiseling all the way through. Even with finely polished irons. I made my own out of a piece of scrap wood with a 1/4 gap then scorched it with a torch and then oiled with boiled linseed oil. It was simple with a hacksaw and some sandpaper.

    • @TeranAtelier
      @TeranAtelier  2 ปีที่แล้ว

That sounds really good, I expect it to be stronger than a printed one.

Thanks for sharing these very useful tips. Wish I have know them earlier when I first start out.

This is great. You could even do three of these with a laser cutter and creative depth cuts. 🤔 I may make a video of this actually.

Thanks! Laser cutting is an area I would like to explore in future but more along the lines of cutting and marking up leather.

A coffee-stirrer type conical paint spreader with just the right girth is another idea for a print.

I have used that type of applicator and I think the end spinning smoothly is really important, that might be hard to achieve with printed parts. I did order a Ender 3 V2 recently so I will definitely be able to try out all sorts of parts.

Looks like TH-cam didn't like your comment and autodeleted it. I only saw the preview that said you use TinkerCAD. I am trying to use FreeCAD but it is very different to the style of CAD I am used to with NanoCAD and AutoCAD.

@@TeranAtelier Thank you for executing it so well. I'm amazed you were able to get good prints immediately from a printing service. I've got to print a few attempts before I get the print I want. But your CAD skills are much better than mine.

Thank you so much for your continuing support! I plan to launch an etsy and patreon in January which will hopefully provide some funds to buy new equipment. How did your new edge creaser turn out?

    • @TeranAtelier

For the printing I just left the parts as solid and let the printing shop handle the rest. I think the height/depth of the raised text and embossed text was too much at 2mm. I need to play around with it more to get it just right.

I am still trying out different software, I used FreeCAD and AutoCAD for these parts but I recommend to try Fusion 360 as it is the most popular 3D printing design software at the moment.
