HP Envy 15 (2020) Review

  • Lisa Gade reviews the HP Envy 15 laptop with an Intel 10th gen Core i7-10750H 6-core, 45 watt processor and NVIDIA RTX 2060 Max-Q graphics. There’s a lot of value in this premium aluminum clad laptop that competes with classy mobile workstations priced higher like the Dell XPS 15, 16” MacBook Pro and the Razer Blade 15. Ours has a 4K OLED touch screen, 16GB dual channel RAM and a 512GB NVMe SSD for $1,499. A fingerprint scanner, webcam and mic kill switches and backlit keyboard are standard. Lower end configs are available with a full HD IPS display and NVIDIA GTX 1650 Ti or GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q dedicated graphics. For performance fans, there’s a BTO Intel Core i9-10885H 8-core CPU option.

I just bought the Full HD version of this with the 1660 GPU. A couple of initial comments. Looks really classy and is very fast. Good battery life. Good choice of ports. It's very quiet and does not get hot. Easy to upgrade the RAM. It is fairly heavy compared to plastic based laptops. You wouldn't want to be carrying it around all day. The keys aren't the easiest to read and you need to change the initial sound settings using the B&O equalizer . The default settings even at full volume are a bit on the low side. I have mine set to "Live" which makes everything sound louder. Otherwise very pleased with it so far.

Thanx for the review. I ultimately had to return this notebook because of the fans. They were spinning up way too soon and strongly even for some light web browsing. I‘ve found other people on Reddit with similar issues. The BIOS settings and HP Command software is pretty useless to control this issue. Surprising you didn‘t encounter those problems. Such a shame because I really liked pretty much everything else about this machine. Not much in this price range to compete with it.

oh and by the way I just received this machine on Nov. 19 2021 and the glare you speak about because of the glossy display is practically non existence under normal circumstances, It might not be "class leading" but from the standpoint of user it looks great. I guess if I were out in the bright sunlight, but who uses a laptop under those conditions except for very rarely. Another thing the keyboard travel is just as good as a lot of laptops and I actually like it a little better than my mid 2015 Macbook Pro, and highest back lighting is very very bright. In addition If you make a slight adjus tments in the Equalizer the speaker are fantastic actually rivaling those of my Macbook pro. very full and loud with excellent stereo separation. All and all This machine is somewhat better in all respects that your review would indicate, which does not mean you are not doing a good job, but I thought these things were worth mentioning.

I have an HP Envy 17t laptop. (Non touch screen.) Intel i5, quad core, 16gb ram, 256 gb SSD, 1tb platter drive. Paid just over $800 direct from HP. I dual boot to Linux Mint 19.2 Cinnamon and Windows 10. (Actually, I have never booted to Windows on it and I never will.) I installed Mint, updated it completely, and configured it to my liking all within 30 minutes after receiving it. Best laptop decision I have ever made.

Wow, what a great review, and it is 2022 in the meantime! Well, is this machine still worth buying in 2022? I like the design, more important I'm planning to use my notebook for photo editing. The 4K Oled 2020 panel seems not to be brilliant - according to the review. How about the 2021 4K Oled Envy 15, could it be better? Or better switching to XPS-15 4K iPS or 3,5K Oled? Best wishes from The Netherlands.

Great review, straight to the point and let's me know what i needed to. There is one with a i5 10th gen and a gtx1650ti, these specs are already good enough for me but besides the cpu and gpu, is it good for gaming? Is there any "problem" that should me stop from buying it? I was going to go with the Legion 5 with the same specs but if this one is fine when it comes to temperatures and fan noise then i will go with this one, it looks really good and is more compact wich would be good for me. It's not the first time i hear someone saying that is not a gaming laptop but shouldn't it be given the specs? A gtx1650ti can run most games perfectly well.
Edit: I play often and i like games like Mount and Blade Bannerlord, Total War Troy, GTA 5, Sea of Thieves, Far Cry, etc.

I have the convertible version of this laptop. It's pretty good buy 2 major complaints are that the touch login is only reliable about 25% of the time (so essentially useless), and because of the fact that ALL the buttons are on the keyboard, when it's in tablet mode, if it goes to sleep, you cannot wake it without first flipping it back into laptop mode (which just puts more wear on the hinges). Pretty major design defect that they still haven't come up with a solution for...

Yeah, I have the Envy 13 (2019 model) and the fingerprint sensor is really poor. Too bad they haven't fixed that. HI Lisa, I am currently looking to upgrade my laptop. Will this HP Envy be ok for editing large Raw files in Capture one pro 20? I am torn between a few models and cant make my mind up as I am not very Pc savy. I have been looking at the Lenovo Creator 7i and the Lenovo Thinkbook 15-iiL. Any of these will be a huge upgrade to what I currently have so any advice would be very gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

HP's latest Envy and Spectre laptops look amazing except for one thing: putting a fingerprint reader where the right Ctrl key is supposed to be! It may seem like a small thing, but this means you can't do Ctrl+arrow key or Ctrl+PgUp/PgDn/Home/End shortcuts with one hand anymore, which is a productivity slowdown for anyone who does a lot of text editing, programming, or uses a lot of tabbed apps. This decision is really baffling to me because there's plenty of space to put the fingerprint reader elsewhere without sacrificing one of the two Ctrl keys on the keyboard.

only the 15-ep0098nr seems to have the 2 Thunderbolt USB ports. I do not believe the 15t-ep000 has them... So, for instance, if you want a regular IPS display and Thunderbolt, you might have to look elsewhere (like the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 7 GTX, MSI Prestige 15...).

The thermal performance is amazing but I always have a doubt on HP longevity

@@billhlimi2036 That's the thing with HP. Just dies. My sister's HP had a HDD failure and later a bad battery.

I wouldn't call it a "Gaming Notebook" as much as I would just a nice compact capable Business/Graphic Designer/Coding etc. laptop.
