  • Lisa Gade reviews the Vaio Z, an unusually powerful 14” Ultrabook with a 3D carbon fiber casing. The Vaio Z isn’t exactly an Ultrabook because it has a significantly more powerful Intel 11th gen Core i7 35 watt CPU rather than the usual 15 watt Ultrabook CPU. The 1 kg laptop has a wide gamut matte 4K display (overseas will likely see a full HD option available too). Thanks to PCIe 4, it has extremely fast SSD speeds. Thunderbolt 4, Intel Wi-Fi 6, a fingerprint scanner and Windows Hello IR camera with presence detection are standard. This is the most expensive Vaio model (the company is no longer owned by Sony). It somewhat competes with the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano that we reviewed here: • Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nan... .

Thanks for bringing this review to us andcI guess you're probably the only channel, doing VAIO laptop reviews. I bought my VAIO Z Canvas, top spaced model, over Surface Book, after watching your review. Just one thing about the 35W Tiger Lake chip, they're not really better than Ryzen 5000HS series in single threaded workloads as welll, only 3 to 5% in some handfulnof apps which prefer Intel architecture. Ryzen 9 5980HS in Asus Flow X13 performs better than i7-11370H in single core tests as well, even in Geekbench 5, which normally prefers Intel CPUs.

I loved when Sony made Vaio. My 11 year old Sony Vaio 13" is only put away because it is very slow compared to newer laptops. It had a nice AMD GPU for games.
I would spend 4000 euro for a new one if they made one with a great GPU. E.g. Rtx 3060 and up. Ryzen 9 5900 CPU.
The build quality of the carbon was fantastic even then - and 11 years after.
Here in Denmark we only get the possibility of the older ultrabook Vaios. I would like to see Vaio make a Razer Blade Stealth/Asus rog Zephyrus g14 competitor.
By the way i am a Sony entusiast 😀
Thanks to Lisa for telling us that Vaio is still alive!

My Sony Vaio Z and later my Vaio Z Canvas are two of my absolute favorite laptops of all time. Still wishing Vaio would make an updated Z Canvas, that machine was truly unique and was excellent to use on the road. Vaio made a misstep by sticking with Intel (probably due to production issues on AMD's side), but the 35 watt HS parts from AMD would've paired nicely here.

Love the Sony Vaio Z, I still use my 2009 VGN-Z to this day. It even still retains exactly 50% of it's original charge thanks to Vaio's battery management controls. 12 years and still kicking. Been hoping that one day Vaio will make a innovative successor to the Z.
Sadly, this Vaio Z is not the one.

  • @nezbrun872
    @nezbrun872 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I still have my loaded 2012 Sony Vaio Z2 that you mentioned with the external GPU/BluRay enclosure dock. It uses Lightpeak, the optical version of Thunderbolt for the eGPU dock, before everyone standardized on copper. It has the factory configured RAID0 dual SATA SSDs for 256GB. The display is FHD 13", unique back then. CPU is i7-2620M 2C4T, with 8GB RAM. All in 2.57lbs/1.17kg. Amazingly, Vaio still supported it after Sony sold the division, so Windows 10 is supported. It's showing its age now of course: despite the weight being competitive with today's models, the bezels give the game away.
The new unit has impressive battery life for a 4k display and 53Wh battery. Disappointed they've finally foregone the clever Ethernet connector Vaio is famed for, and there are no USB A ports on this new model. 16:10 aspect ratio would be good too.

Preorders for the base model under $2400. I bought the Z over 9 years ago for more than that. The higher priced versions only involve a higher resolution screen, i7 instead of i5 CPU and bigger capacity HD's. The base model is very tempting to me. They have dropped prices across the board up until the 4th of July, as low as $1899 for i5 model at the time of this post. So I made an impulse buy of $3079 for the i7 512gb model. This is the most I've ever spent on a laptop since my $2500 2010 Vaio Z which had the GT 330M dedicated GPU. I LOVED that thing.
Edit: 4 weeks later I absolutely love this laptop. It does not creak like some reviews claim and runs so fast. When worked hard the fans hiss but do not whine; does not bother me. It surprised me how well it runs some games like Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion and Mass Effect 3. No problem editing video using Sony Movie Studio platinum 14. No regrets so far this laptop is just what I needed. Thank you for a great review.

The thing that holds this laptop back is its looks when you open it, kinder old considering the huge bezel at the top and the buttons on the trackpad.. And that price tag, when a macbook air M1 does what it does without a fan at 900$..
I have Vaio E Series 15114fxs and looks way better for a 2012 machine aside from its fat chassie..
The keyboard layout and feel as i can see is still excellent from Vaio as always..

I have the 2009 Sony Vaio Z back then that i won as a treasure hunt contest organized by sony that time, it was impressive build machine, really2 light, but the Atom CPU is really weak & slow that time, this 2021 Vaio Z is looking impressive update.

I have a question: I am a user of Sony consoles and I always use them to play videogames because they offer me the best quality. In general, I use Japanese technology to play and I also have Sony phones. I need a new multimedia system/work that is fast but I don't want to. use the damn pcs because they are too big and require more maintenance since I like the portable more. I want to know if there is any difference in performance and power between a laptop with these characteristics and a desktop PC

@@yhwachjodedor808 Hi bro, I recommend a Sony laptop, it's lighter and not as annoying as a PC.
I recommend it from my own experience, I have my Sony Vaio laptop for more than three years and it works fine for me.

I would 100% be buying the $4k version if it had a 16" screen and a numeric keypad. 14" is just too small. I do love VAIO though, a few of my friends have kept theirs for a long time so durability is pretty good.

It’s meant to fit in a carry on bag. You can’t do that with a bigger size laptop.

Was really hoping for something along the lines of a refresh to the previous Vaio Z line from 2016, not something more than twice the cost of the SX line.

FYI, this isn't the ONLY laptop in its class with a 35W+ H-CPU chipset.
The popular ODM Tongfang already has a 14", 1.1 kg body design that contains AMD's Ryzen 5600H and 5800H processors.
These thin & light powerhouse laptops are available from various resellers for around $800 USD.
Reddit post is called "All of the Vendors that are offering the Tongfang PF4NU1F and the PF4NU1G"

They really need to recreate the 2010 Vaio Z, make an ultralight laptop with a medium range GPU. Its a great laptop but its hard to buy a laptop with no GPU. I would be happy if it was a tiny bit fatter and heavier to include that.

Vaio is built very well and the quality is just insane.
They are also made in Japan not China.
The price is high, because it's a niche laptop for a niche market.
People who can afford 4000$ laptop ain't gonna be complaining about the lack of gpu because they probably will buy another rig just for gaming anyway. This is business laptop that prioritize port, portability, status symbol and performance

I’m generally able to spend a decent amount on equipment given that I consider computing equipment “investments” on my daily quality-of-living.
But this $3,500+ laptop is beyond even my means. Christ almighty... hope Vaio does a sale or some sort of discount on those things soon. Maybe a student discount?
I remember with great fondness playing with the Z laptops in a Sony Style store 10 years ago. I thought they were super nice, but quite delicate back then.
Seems like they haven’t changed much from back then, except the internals are still ridiculously awesome.

I was expecting discrete GPU for that much asking price. Sth like the 3060 65w version would put it nicely against MSI Stealth 15 or Asus TUF Dash 15 with superior materials.
