Watching this on my Y540. Your review of this machine was what convinced me to get it. Thank you Jarrod. As you said in the video, it's the keyboard typing experience, the IOs at the back plus the overall clean aesthetic of the device that I really appreciate. Oh also, I'm not gonna take credit for this but someone mentioned that if you press the Fn key + L key simultaneously, you can turn off the light up 'y' on the lid of y540 to give it an even more muted/stealth look. Cheers!

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Good to hear! Yeah I found out about the shortcut to turn off the light after the review went up 😅 I left a "heart" thing on the comment which should rise it up to the top, it had quite a few likes too so hopefully people see it. It wasn't an option on the Y530!

I overclocked my Lenovo Y540 and undervolted the i7-9750h (-0.140). I am getting great performance. I orginally had the RTX 2060 version, but I returned it and saved 200 bucks to get the gtx 1660 ti version of the Y540. It's a great laptop. I overclocked the GPU 160MHz on the core & 320MHz on the memory and it's been great! With the -0.140 undervolt I have never seen temps above 80 Celsius. I do have the 17 inch version that I got from Micro Center here in Northern Virginia (USA). I purchased the laptop for $999.00. It's a great laptop. I am super impressed. Thanks Jarrod for an awesome review. You seriously are a gem.

The rest was either with 1660Ti or hidden 60Hz display(I had to call to make sure, they are sneaky like that). To get the same specs for Acer 300 I would have to pay 7000PLN, so no-brainer really.

I wanted to thank @Jarrod'sTech for making these comparisons as I just bought Y540 last week and it is super awesome! Very good and detailed findings for the Undervolt for CPU and GPU makes Y540 the best value and slim laptop for 2019!
Coincidentally my bro bought Helios 300 like two days ago and I have tested it out. Same kind of performances only noticeable lower temps but the max fan is too loud comparing to Y540. Yet the Helios 300 feels like the typical laptop while the slim and clean design from Y540 makes this laptop a compact beast for a traveller like me!

@@saadhussain9785 sure. I saw on your profile that you were asking about thermals. My CPU also used to go over 90c on some more demanding games. But I undervolted the CPU using throttlestop, and when playing high demanding games it usually goes to around 80-85 max. You can buy a cooling pad to lower it even more. New thermal paste is also an option, although I never changed it (maybe I should because I had this laptop for over 3 years now). Also know that these laptops and their CPUs are built to work to 100c without much problems, but I guess for longevity of the device it is better to make these small adjustments. Anyway, I never had problems with this laptop, used it a lot, got my money’s worth and some more. Just take care of it, clean the fans once a year and you should be good. 👍

I'd pick the Lenovo since its easier to tweak, quieter, looks cleaner, ports on the back, and most importantly, a mux switch.
I'm glad both these laptops exist though quite frankly. Prices for 2070/2080 max Q's seem way too much $ for what you get.
Both these being around will just make other laptops come down in $ if a lot people buy these. Win win for everyone.
Both are SO much better than budget gaming laptops from a few years ago.
No more thick bezels, horrible 60hz screens, TN panels, weaker CPUs, etc. Good time to be a mobile gamer on a budget!

Having a good keyboard was really important since i plan on using it for work and taking notes in lectures. Y740 keyboard is pushed to the right because they created shortcut keys on the left right next to the escape key. Its a really bad design, so i just didn’t think it was worth the extra $$ since the y540 is almost identical with a better keyboard. I can live without tb3 and gsync, its not a deal breaker

Thank you for the great review/comparison. I own the Lenovo Y540 with the RTX 2060 GPU. - 17 inch 144 hz screen. I was a bit bummed that the Lenovo didn’t come undervolted out of the box. But I’ve enjoyed learning how to undervolt and overclock over the past couple weeks. By simply switching to balanced mode, lifting the rear of my laptop about 3/4 of an inch for better ventilation and airflow, and undervolting 125 core and cache, I reduced the temperature by more than 10° on average, and the system absolutely flies. All while keeping the fan noise to a minimum. Glad I went this route. I’m really impressed with the performance, screen brightness, lack of light bleed, and just about everything the Y540 offers. Keyboard is good, camera placement horrible. Besides that - I give it a 9.5 out of 10.

I ordered a Y540 today, cheaper than the Helios in Canada especially with the recent sale, plus I also get 10% cash back with Ebates.
Helios has way to many cons for me. The performance advantage due to undervolt and gpu overclock can be done easily on other laptops with Throttlestop/XTU and Afterburner. Many people don't realize the "factory" undervolting is done with software too (with XTU profiles running in Predator Sense) and not set in the BIOS.
    1) I/O ports are ALL located on the sides (why? just why?)
    2) Power port is in a poor location, cable blocks vent and gets it super hot from the exhaust
    3) Immature gamer look, not professional looking, I can't take it to business meetings
    4) No MUX switch - not able to disable Hybrid mode
    5) Louder fans compared to others
    6) Blue trim looks tacky
    7) Blue keyboard backlight not good for night time use, white is easier on the eyes
    8) Different colored WASD and arrow keys bug me
    9) No option to create a "custom" configuration like Lenovo
Webcam placement on the Y540 doesn't bother me. I'd actually prefer if they get rid of it completely like the Asus Strix Scar. I've never used a webcam in over 20 years, never going to.

@@ij6708 For South East Asia region. The price difference starts from USD $721 onwards depending on the gpu and screen that you pick. Take for example, the two laptops with the same spec as the video, the price difference for y540 would be around USD $600 with other non-hardware upgrades included during promotion. I went back to check the price for y540 and it rose a bit and now, with the same price as I paid and promotion, one couldn't get the non-hardware upgrade anymore. So for your region, it will be a comparison between the slight add-on you can get. Also, you are in better position to buy Helios 300 there.

I got it for 1,200 bucks at Micro Center here in the USA (Northern Virginia) I overclocked the GPU by +200MHz (Core Clock) & +1000MHz (Memory Clock). I undervolted the CPU by -0.140mv using Intel XTU. I am getting 6,500 Time Spy score (6,600) graphics score. Thermals are great!
