The new one does run cooler, but it's also undervolted out of the box which helps with thermals. I've covered them in depth in this video though: th-cam.com/video/4cdq02JcTGU/w-d-xo.html
Станислав Строянецкий I replaced my thermal paste with Kryonaut Grizzly and undervolted my CPU to solve the throttling problem. It runs perfectly now with max temps reaching 80 degrees on full load.

hey Jarrod, love your vids but hope you could do a Helios 300 vs Triton 500 to see which one would be better since you’re doing a triton 500 review anyway, thanks!

Just purchased the 2019 version and will be my first acer laptop hoping for great things as I've been stuck on the Lenovo Legion Y520 for years heh. Thanks for the review really helped decide between this and the asus ROG :)
Just picked the new model up on Prime Day.. Although it did not have the RGB lighting. I dropped a 2tb Intel 660p m.2 in it, as well as a 1tb Samsung 860 Evo ssd in it. Lastly I added 32gb of ram in it. This thing is a beast. Of note though, the fans can be so loud on turbo mode that they almost drown out the sound coming from the weak speakers. External speakers or a headset would be best when gaming on Turbo mode.
It's hard to find a comparable CPU but even then it sort of defeats the purpose by making them the same, probably better to use two machines worth the same amount of money or something.
Yeah that would be interesting to see how the performance is between both cause I’m deciding wether to get a PC or get another laptop to take out but I don’t want a laptop that looks all gamer I was looking at the msi p65 with 2060 or gs65 and have it connected to external display either 1440p 144hz or 1080p 240hz and maybe a egpu but just wondering what they compare to a pc
Been using 2019 Helios 300 for awhile, I'm pretty satisfied, solid laptop, well built. My only complain would be the loud fan when on Turbo but other than that lovely laptop.
Great review of the two machines. I've got the 2017 and 2019 models and both are great laptops. The older models do show their age in terms of design when paired next to the new 2019 model. As far as performance wise, the 2019 pulls ahead with the new 1660 ti card. This laptop is a definite buy when priced at $999. Look out for Black Friday deals in November!
I almost bought the 2018 before I realized there was a 2019. I wasn’t sure if it was worth it though. This is the absolute perfect video I have been searching for and I just ordered the 2019 because of it. It should be quite the upgrade from my 9yr old Toshiba I got for $250. Thank you.
I found that using a cooling pad on the 2018 Helios 300 I was able to keep my temps for both in the 80s. I also keep the fans on max and he wear head phones. Also you can customize the fan speeds on the 2018 to prevent throttling
You really helped me make up my mind between them. I know without a doubt I'm getting the most for my money. Saving up for the 2019 model is the best choice
Your videos are very informative and always watch your review before I buy a laptop. Watched your review on Acer Helios 300 2019 and importing it from US to India (as there was a good deal on Amazon and its not available in India yet). I haven't received the laptop yet but as I am trying to get more info on this laptop, I am concerned to see many consumers are complaining about issues they are facing with this product. Main issues are black screen, BIOS, very bad backlight. I would appreciate if you could address these issues in a video along with potential fixes.
Thanks! Unfortunately both of these machines have already been sent to Acer so I can't do further testing, however I have tested backlight bleed in this video and both laptops in more depth in the full reviews linked in the description. Not really much you can do to fix bleed though except try adjust the pressure from the screen exterior on the panel.
@@JarrodsTech Thanks for your response. Do you suggest to import this laptop from US without warranty when many are facing mentioned issues with this product?
I play Destiny 2 on Acer Predator Helios 300 (2018 version with GTX 1060) and still super smooth (87 fps average) at max settings, during Crucible match.
Thank you for the reviews! I own the new Helios 300 and love it so far. Only con for me is the backlight bleed but rarely notice it. What are your thoughts on ideal undervolt settings for the new model? Right now I have mine set at CPU -.15 and GPU -.08. I see in the video you undervolted to -.17. I watched all your other videos for this laptop as well so I’m curious on your thoughts for ideal/best undervolt settings? Thanks again!
Good to hear, basically there is no ideal it just depends on what you're able to get as each chip has different limits, I've had some CPUs that wouldn't go below -0.07v for instance. Generally I just go with -0.15v in my videos as it almost always works so I think it's a good representation of what other people would actually be able to replicate.
@@TabalugaDragon Thanks Tabaluga, correct, I use ThrottleStop and have the Intel GPU at -.08. You're saying I can undervolt the Nvidia GPU as well? I"m new to all this and want my temps cooler so any advice you have is appreciated.
In the Philippines, Acer Predator Helios 300 (2018 model, GTX 1060) cost about PHP 70k and the 2019 model (GTX 1660 TI) cost about PHP 79k. It's just too expensive in the Philippines. I did just go with the 2018 model (GTX 1060).
Now this is a man with a passion for laptops revs. I bought mine 2018 17' screen same specs last year. 1700e new price. Can get somewhere hot and noisy, but main problem been it goes to blue screen during play Fortnite/witcher/BF. Mainly missing ram errors.Had these since first week of buying this laptop. Only solution i found was to lower the prosesor output power from 100% on charger to around 50-60%. But that also lowers my FPS in game:( I might test out the overclocking options if it solves the crashing problem. Have any1 experienced this!? All in all i cant complain, because i got it for 230e new. ( Got back cash form old laptop due to Mainboard problems)
Hello Jarrod, First thank you for all awesome notebook reviews. I'd like to add one more thing that maybe you could consider on your video reviews. how are the quality of power adapter plugs. For example Lenovo's Y540 as I see is equal to Thinkpad ones and boy they are great. This is an important thing to consider because accidentally we can kick our notebooks power cable and sometimes the plug in the notebook breaks requiring assistance just to put the DC plug back in place. Just a tip. My old laptop with traditional DC plug I use very carefully so that it can last more. It's a Samsung RF511 i7 gt540m (It sucks for current games) and now I am looking for renewing it maybe with a gtx 1660 ti or maybe rtx 2060 if my budget allows
Continuing... I was going to buy the y540 but I've seen some people had issues with its cooling system. And searching about Helios 300 here in Brazil's Google I got many links to screen replacements. So I'd to ask you this. Wich would you choose...(all rtx 2060 144hz). Helios 300, Y540 or Samsung Odyssey 2? Thinking about heavy use that requires a lot from the cooling system
Cheers! I guess I'm not really sure how to fairly compare plugs, open to suggestions. I'd get Y540 personally for the reasons mentioned in my Y540 vs Helios comparison: th-cam.com/video/pyggQzZmM4I/w-d-xo.html never used any Samsung stuff so can't fairly compare unfortunately :(
2019 model is awesome but (and there is a big BUT) the price in Italy is 1699€ that's mean 1882$. And with 1699€ you can take a gaming notebook with an rtx 2060, so there is no deal in Italy
Hey I have the 2018 predator helios 300 and as you now the cpu's degree can reach the 90° 95°. But are there problems resulting from this or the cpu can hold this degree?
Not really, but it's hard to say. Basically the CPU is designed with a limit and will just thermal throttle back to stay below this point and prevent damage, however in general heat is bad for components over long periods of time, it's just impossible to say if it will actually make a meaningful difference to you over the life span of the machine or not, there's no hard data around this.
Kind of, often you will be able to return/replace a laptop if it's bad enough, but realistically it's just part of the way IPS works, but if it's excessive it could be a low quality panel.
I just got a new Helios 300 yesterday. My specs are a bit different. I have the 17 inch screen and it has an Nvidia Geforce RTX 2060. Mine has an nVme 512 and I installed an additional 2.5 SSD.

i purchased the 2018 model and coming from a 2011 qosmio it was a huge upgrade. for the price on sale for 850 i am really happy. i casually game and dont play any recent games so i cant really push that the graphics card is super bomb. but the older games i saved this machine flys through them. also remember the 2019 model the power cable plugged in covers the air vent.
Nice, yeah that would be a huge change!
Dear Jarrod. I have cpu throttling problem on my 2018 helios 300. Will i have the same problem on the 2019? (MAX fans on). Please, answer.
The new one does run cooler, but it's also undervolted out of the box which helps with thermals. I've covered them in depth in this video though: th-cam.com/video/4cdq02JcTGU/w-d-xo.html
there's a lot of info about undervolting on the fb helios 300 grp too
Buy cooling pad and change your thermal paste and cleaning your laptop go long way of keep thermals normal.
Станислав Строянецкий I replaced my thermal paste with Kryonaut Grizzly and undervolted my CPU to solve the throttling problem. It runs perfectly now with max temps reaching 80 degrees on full load.
On the 2018 Helios 300 I have issues with temps being near 90 or 95° under full load (CPU+GPU maxed out or close to it). I am going to try re-applying thermal paste but I'm hesitant to try. I don't know if I can do it with what I have but I can't have a airplane jet engine for a laptop
thanks for straight to the point comparison
Happy to help!
hey Jarrod, love your vids but hope you could do a Helios 300 vs Triton 500 to see which one would be better since you’re doing a triton 500 review anyway, thanks!
Would be good if I had the 2060 Helios 300, not sure how useful it'd be to compare with the 1660 Ti Helios 300 / Triton 500 with 2060, or is that exactly what you're after?
Jarrod'sTech 1660ti or 2060 Helios 300 would still be good to compare with the Triton 500, since me and maybe other people are deciding on which one to buy since they have similar price ranges
I bought my brand new Acer predator 2017 with i5, 1050ti 128gb and 1 tb , in just 14999 rs that is only 217 USD only, from Flipkart big billion day sale, that was price error deal, but order got delivered
Ashu 3850 perhaps it was a refurbished one
Sounds like a pretty good deal
Watching this review from YEMEN
I must sell my car to buy this Laptop 😂
Anyway u r the best ,, big like

Is the civil war still going on in your country?
Unfortunately yes 😔 and we cant travel to any country to get Political asylum ,, our life in ADEN so hard ,, pray for us 👐🏻

@@hateoverlove1 thanks for ur kind feelings ❤
i have the 2018 model and planning to buy the 2019 model during the black friday if there was an offer (there was a 200$ discount on this model last year and i bought it)
thanks for your perfact review, i got every information i wanted, awesome job
No problem at all!
Watching this from my 2019 Helios 300 that I got on prime day for $999. Can't recommend it enough!
That was a great deal!
You put a lot of work into your videos. Thank you for helping me pick my new laptop. You got a new Subscriber.
Happy to help, welcome to the channel!
Nice Video! Could you do a review on the new Asus ROG Strix G please?
I'm considering to buy either this one or the Asus ROG Strix Scar 2 with the RTX 2060
I've been waiting on ASUS for months, they said there is some delay getting review units in Australia, so still waiting on them.
Just purchased the 2019 version and will be my first acer laptop hoping for great things as I've been stuck on the Lenovo Legion Y520 for years heh. Thanks for the review really helped decide between this and the asus ROG :)
acer predator helios 300 or hp omen 15 ? and why
I haven't used the HP Omen so I cannot comment at this time.
Nice!
Can you do a video of laptop vs
PC you should get them at similar specs hooked up to a external monitor with like 1080p and 1440p but just and idea
TabalugaDragon I guess for it to be fair get a PC and monitor for the same price as the laptop it is getting compared to
finally! well-spent 17mins of the day( 2sec for buffering)
👍
I have been waiting for this comparison for some time now💜
💜
Wow, i am really considering getting one of these... (2019)
Nice, let us know how it goes if you go for it!
Been using 2019 Helios 300 for awhile, I'm pretty satisfied, solid laptop, well built. My only complain would be the loud fan when on Turbo but other than that lovely laptop.
Good to hear it's going well 👌
Are you still using the laptop, if yes then how would you rate it now . Facing any issues so far regarding anything.
@@muhammadraed2025 No issues after 4 years, pretty solid laptop.
Acer Helios 300 vs Lenovo Legion y540 :)
I'm working on it.
Thanks! Yeah the $999 prime day sale was crazy good value!
I wish someone would gift me one from my amazon wishlist 😢
same
I almost bought the 2018 before I realized there was a 2019. I wasn’t sure if it was worth it though. This is the absolute perfect video I have been searching for and I just ordered the 2019 because of it. It should be quite the upgrade from my 9yr old Toshiba I got for $250. Thank you.
Nice, yeah will be a massive improvement over that!
The new helios 300 (2019) is rgb but it does not move on 4 zone only, you can change how it would show on the PredatorSense software
I found that using a cooling pad on the 2018 Helios 300 I was able to keep my temps for both in the 80s. I also keep the fans on max and he wear head phones. Also you can customize the fan speeds on the 2018 to prevent throttling
Nice, what ambient room temp though? Generally a 1c increase to the room raises the internals by the same amount
Great video dude
Thanks!
Love your channel bro, you work so hard to bring us the honest reviews. Keep it up
Thanks!
The channel is going to the 100 k subscriber. Very happy to see how growing up
Cheers!
if you're looking for a cheaper and a heavy powered laptop go for the 2018 version, if you know u have a few more to spend go for the 2019 version
It's ok, but definitely seems worthwhile saving a bit extra for the new one.
You really helped me make up my mind between them. I know without a doubt I'm getting the most for my money. Saving up for the 2019 model is the best choice
Happy to help!
Do you suggest to import this laptop from US without warranty when many are facing mentioned issues with this product?
just upgraded from the 2018 model to the 2019 model and I am NOT disappointed
Nice!
watching with my 2019 predator, lovely laptop
Amazing and informative video Jarrod. Subscribed. And I'm definitely buying the Helios 2019 soon
Thanks, welcome to the channel!
I play Destiny 2 on Acer Predator Helios 300 (2018 version with GTX 1060) and still super smooth (87 fps average) at max settings, during Crucible match.
Nice 👌
7:14 why is there smoke near the 2018 Helios?
its reflection from the screen
I think it was just too bright and over exposed.
I have the old 2018 and one of the fans don’t move at all is that good or bad please help me
Still having this problem?
2018 only have red light on keyboard?
I"m new to all this and want my temps cooler so any advice you have is appreciated.
they two have different gfx cards. what if we compare i7 1050ti vs i5 1650? will there be any major diff
Thanks man this helps a lot. Keep up the good work
No problem!
Nice comparisions Jarrod 😁
Thanks!
Awesome video as usual
Thanks!
Fair enough, but for 13% more money I really think you missed out there.
@@JarrodsTech I bought it before the 2019 model was released in the Philippines. But still a great gaming laptop
What about the difference between the 2060 and 1660ti
Still waiting to get the right machine to do that comparison properly.
I’m getting the 2019 512gb (gigabyte also known as storage) so I hope it will be here and also keep up the good work
Please help me! My predator sense is not opening 😭!!pls pls
Hmm that's a strange one, have not heard of that happening before, sorry.
Hello Jarrod,
First thank you for all awesome notebook reviews.
I'd get Y540 personally for the reasons mentioned in my Y540 vs Helios comparison: th-cam.com/video/pyggQzZmM4I/w-d-xo.html never used any Samsung stuff so can't fairly compare unfortunately :(
To be honest I like the hood of the 2018 version but the screen of the 2019 version.
2019 model is awesome but (and there is a big BUT) the price in Italy is 1699€ that's mean 1882$. And with 1699€ you can take a gaming notebook with an rtx 2060, so there is no deal in Italy
oof
Were you using Turbo Mode on the 2019 in those FPS tests?
Right down to the facts without delay.I am beginning to think you are better than Linus Tech Tips.
Thanks!
Hey
I have the 2018 predator helios 300 and as you now the cpu's degree can reach the 90° 95°.
Very useful vid. Thanks for making this.
No problem at all!
well considering the 2018 has a 60hz panel its good but that i7 8750h is a stove
What a beatdown, like a weltherweight vs featherweight competitor.
heh
In case you consider adding/swapping test games, I'd be interested to see tests in Destiny 2. I don't know if it has a built-in benchmark though
I'm always happy to add more, I just need to see a bunch of people ask for it before I will buy it and kick out another from the list 😅
Jarrod'sTech I think destiny 2 is free atm😄 , could be wrong but it was being given last week if I remember
Hi Jarrod.... I love your videos... You give the tiniest details much importance.... Good Job!!! 🔥🔥
Thanks!
is it good for video editing and rendering ?
Very informative review great video!
Cheers!
Is a backlight bleed that's quite noticable to the eye considered a defect?
Kind of, often you will be able to return/replace a laptop if it's bad enough, but realistically it's just part of the way IPS works, but if it's excessive it could be a low quality panel.
Wait can you get the new predatorsense for the old model
Watching your 1st video and already a fan...!!!🤗🤗🤗
😁
I just got a new Helios 300 yesterday. My specs are a bit different. I have the 17 inch screen and it has an Nvidia Geforce RTX 2060. Mine has an nVme 512 and I installed an additional 2.5 SSD.
Cool, I haven't had the chance to test the 2060 or 17" version yet, they don't seen to have that config for me to test :(
@@JarrodsTech from what I read, this version is "retail" only, whatever that means.
