    This is my VW ID4 ownership review after 1 year and 20,000 miles. In this video, I cover 5 key topics of electric vehicle ownership:
    ID4 Interior: I have the space gray interior (with first edition accents). I'll tell you how well the interior materials of the ID 4 are holding up, how nice they feel (or not), how comfortable the seats are and my overall interior impressions of this electric crossover SUV.
    ID4 Driving Dynamics: This part of the video discusses how fun the VW ID4 is to drive, including 0-60 time, suspension feel and handling.
    ID4 Range, Range Anxiety & Charging: The Volkswagen ID4 First Edition is rated at 250 miles of EPA range. Does it get close to that in the real-world? How does this EV do in the cold? How fast does the ID4 charge?
    ID4 Build Quality, Reliability and Maintenance: Has the ID4 been a reliable EV? What have I paid for maintenance? I'll discuss build quality issues and reliability of this electric car.
    ID4 Software: How does the Volkswagen ID4's software compare to market leaders like the Tesla Model Y? How many software updates have we had?
    Thank you so much for watching!

    This is a very good review of the VW 1.4 and one that I believe would help potential buyers. Your review was well organized, at the right level of detail, covered all the essentials, and was easy to understand. I purchased my ID.4 in Aug 2021 and have 10k miles, about half as much as you. I found myself agreeing with pretty much everything you stated in your review. The only area where my experience greatly differs from yours is with the travel assist. The car does not slow down when I am fast approaching a car in my lane that is moving very slowly or that has stopped. This happens on both highways and city streets. I can see that the my car does not always recognize the car in my lane because the car icon does not appear on my screen. I also noticed that the travel assist behaves poorly when I am driving on curvy roads because the car does not see the car around the corner and does not slow down fast enough. It also sometimes accelerates on curves, trying to reach the target speed limit that I set, because the car thinks the lane is straight.

    • @evhelphub
      @evhelphub  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much for the kind words, Eric! I am split on the travel assist myself. To VW's credit, I've never had a phantom braking or false warning issue like I've had in several Teslas, which gives me confidence in the system. On the other hand, it doesn't handle ambiguity or curves anywhere near as well as the latest Autopilot software. Just one comparison point. I'd say overall I am fine with it and use it sparingly but don't trust it a ton. Thank you for your feedback on it as well!

    Awesome review! I am looking at the exact model you have currently. Plan to set up a test drive this weekend. Your notes helped me soo much. It was the gas vs monthly payment comparison that made me want to switch to EV. I spend $500+ a month on gas and that is basically what my payment will be.. Seems to be a no brainer. Hope to join the ID4 club soon. Good day!

    I like my car and enjoyed your video as it covered a lot of my likes and concerns. I recently asked about the lack of updates and the uselessness of the VW app at VW customer service online. My problem has been charging the vehicle from home on a first or second level charger. On the VW ID-4 owner site this seems to be a frequent problem with it dropping off after 20-30 minutes and was supposed to be part of the 2022 update which has not occurred. VW gave me a link to enter my VIN to check for updates and so far none.

    Have had ours for a year. An absolute joy to use. I've come to appreciate the haptic buttons on the steering wheel. Their main advantage is swiping. You don’t need to look down or fidget when you swipe. Simplicity. It took me by surprise when I realized how swiping adjusts ACC cruising speed or sound volume or skips songs. You just swipe your thumbs across the middle of those panels , effortless - no need to look down or find the right buttons. It’s a pity those buttons are misunderstood. Coupled with AR-HUD, I never need to take my eyes off the road.

      I just put an order in for an ID.4 Pro S. I’m looking at a 4 to 6 month delivery time. Frankly, you shoes were the things that I have the most concerned about. So hopefully the updates that will come with my car I have sold many of the complaints that owners have mentioned. Also, initially I ordered the RW drive but changed to AWD after talking with an owner who recently traded in his 2021 or a 2022 model. He told me that the handling of the AWD was more sure footed at high speeds and emergency maneuvers. He also said his actual AWD mileage penalty was quite small compared to his previous RW model. I’m wondering if anyone else has had real world experience with comparing AWD to RW.

      Have you driven the ev6? How does it compare with the id4?

    • @evhelphub
      @evhelphub  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes I have (review on that coming soon).
      I thought the EV6 was very solid feeling and potentially slightly quieter on the road (depending on tires). It's a great car. On paper it is certainly the better EV with more range, newer charging tech, etc.
      I don't love the interior, personally because of the many touch sensitive buttons that I kept accidentally activating on my test drive which was frustrating. I really disliked the climate control/audio display. The infotainment system was responsive, it gets more range and charges faster, but not 3 free years of unlimited charging sessions with Electrify America.
      Generally speaking - we like the look of the ID4 better on the outside as well. However - if you are interested, I'd say it is certainly worth a test drive, especially if you can go with a higher trim that includes ventilated seats! :)

    • @markhanson7499

      @@evhelphub Good to know. It's interesting that you commented on the touch sensitive buttons. I've read where the id4 has a lot and folks aren't happy with the amount. I'm test driving both cars very soon (ordered both and they are now here).

      Yeah the sound is totally subjective. I'm a sound-sensitive person, and the vehicle overall is very quiet. I really like the particular sound of this EV. But I will say that how it sounds in this video is far more loud/harsh than I'm hearing it as a driver--even with the window open. And of course considerably better than ICE engine noise. It's just the constant high pitched noise you hear when sitting at a stop and the fact that you can hear it so far away. Luckily for us the solution was to unplug the front speaker. Sound is still generated from the rear and it's still quite loud but it helped take the edge off. Just not my jam. :)

    Good review. I've had my 2023 RWD ID4 for about a month. It comes with newer software, and I've experienced no problem with infotainment system lagginess at all. However, I use Android Auto almost all of the time, and rarely interact with the ID4 UI. The Android Auto has been rock solid (which wasn't the case with my last car). I have the climate control and seat heaters set to auto, so have little reason to ever touch the climate controls. However, a couple times it has forgotten my auto climate and seat heater settings, so I had to go back in and fix it, which is annoying. The phone app is VERY bare bones. But, the only thing I really use it for is checking charging status, and it has worked reliably for that. So, while the software definitely isn't the greatest, it's good in the areas I care most about.
    Adaptive cruise control works well, which is important to me, since I use it almost all the time. I don't yet have a lot of experience with the lane centering feature, so can't comment.
    The ride is very comfortable and quiet, which makes it such a pleasure to drive.
    I thought the slower 0 to 60 time compared to other EVs might be a problem. It hasn't been a problem AT ALL. It's plenty quick enough for me.
    It's quite roomy inside for a relatively small vehicle.
    Things I DON'T like:
    It doesn't have auto door locks for when you leave the vehicle. So, I have to manually lock on the door handle. After six years of getting used to it on my old car (a very basic car), it's taking a lot of relearning. I still can't believe a car with all this tech doesn't have such a basic feature.
    The sound system is pretty mediocre. If you boost the bass and treble in the three band equalizer, you can get it to sound slightly better, but it's still nothing to write home about.
    Even inside the cabin, the pedestrian noisemaker is too loud, especially just below 20 MPH. It's way louder than a typical ICE vehicle, which doesn't make any sense. I'm thinking about putting some tape over the speaker to muffle the sound a bit.
    The haptic capacitive buttons on the steering wheel are a little less user friendly than traditional mechanical buttons, but I'm getting used to them.
    Overall, I really like the ID4. It has met or exceeded almost all my expectations (lack of auto door locks was really the only negative surprise). It stands out as an excellent value, which is the main reason I got it.

      @evhelphub  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @colincroft2704
      @colincroft2704 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd agree with these pros/cons (I have a 23' AWD Pro S). The lack of a walkaway auto lock is surprising, particularly when coupled with the fact that you can't set the vehicle to do a confirming "chirp" with manual locking. Only the lights flash, and depending on the light, it's hard to see/know whether you've locked the car since the locks are so quiet. But on balance a wonderful vehicle so far.

    Great review, I can relate to almost everything having driven my ID.4 for 10.000 miles (in the Netherlands). My infotainment is not so buggy, luckily (2.3). But the (lack of) software updates in the car and the app has me concerned, as most of the current features in the app have been present from the launch without major new functions. I would not buy VW again because of this and would like to warn anybody buying a car nowadays to pay more attention to the software and app that comes with a car.

    I have the same color! i just brought home my 2023 ID.4 pro RWD yesterday. Traded my Nissan Frontier 2022 SV 4x4. I do really love this car. I haven't been this excited getting a new car (from my experience with 2015 Tucson turbo, Lexus NX300 FS, and my truck. Still learning all the features/Functionality. It doesn't come with a mobile charger and the VW is more expensive than tesla's ($350 vs $230). Good thing Amazon has a lot of stuff (got the BougeRV level 2 EV 16A that comes with NEMA 5-15 adapter for regular 110V outlet with 20A fuse). Also, I AM LOVING THE SPEAKER SYSTEM!!!
    My "I wish" thoughts so far:
    - I wish powerlift tailgate is standard across the trims.
    - The buttons for volume and climate should've been backlit. Although pressing the climate control will give you full functionality adjustments on screen.
    - i wish i have the 12V port near the dashboard so i can run my dashcam without hardwire or taking a long trip to the back. Or at least a USB port behind the rearview mirror on my trim.

    Nice objective video. I like that you've emphasized using a Level 1 charger, which will be adequate for many people depending on their driving habits. I have a '23, which comes with no charging cable. I bought the VW-branded 2-way charger for around $350, and although described as a "travel charger" it's totally adequate for my needs considering my daily driving of around 35-40 miles. A basic 240v circuit in your garage will charge at level 2 speeds, between 17-21 miles/hour for me. But the 110v would be adequate most days/nights as well. Point is, start with an inexpensive charger before buying a fancy home charge system right away. If you need to upgrade to a more powerful/faster charger, fine, but you may not need it.

    • @evhelphub
      @evhelphub  ปีที่แล้ว

    • @evhelphub
      @evhelphub  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for watching, John! Since you live in an area where it does get very cold, snowy, and hilly, I'd recommend going with the AWD just to be safe. I do want to put out the most EVs have a battery pack that extends of the width of the car, so the center of gravity and weight is more evenly distributed, meaning that a RWD EV doesn't feel or handle like a RWD gas or diesel car. If you lived somewhere with shorter winters, I'd say RWD is perfectly fine.

      @@evhelphub Hey! Thank you for the quick response. That all makes sense. I’m assuming that the AWD’s range is a bit less, correct? Thanks again.

    • @evhelphub
      @evhelphub  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, you should expect to lose about 5% of range. I recommend going with the smaller (standard) wheels as they are more efficient (to maintain as much range as possible), look very similar and are still attractive. Another way to look at it is: you'll spend 5 more minutes at the charger each time, likely a worthwhile tradeoff for safer driving in wintery conditions. Electrify America is about to open a charger in Burlington and already have one in the middle of New Hampshire (quite a few in MA), so you shouldn't have to really worry about range anxiety on those trips! Be sure to check out my winter highway range test video to see how the cold impacts how far you can drive! :)

    Great fair even-kiltered review giving real-world insight based on your experience. I'm new to the EV market. Seriously considering an ID4 for my next car to replace my old acura rdx. Wondering howmuch of a factor range anxiety will be. I have an 80 mile round-trip commute which I do 4 times a week. Presumably I'd charge my car overnight at home. There are no charging stations within close proximity of work so I'd need my battery on full charge to offer me at least 100 miles of range each time. Do you perceive this being a problem with the id4 ? What about during hot and cold months? How much is range affected by hvac use? Thanks again for your insight.

    • @evhelphub
      @evhelphub  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for watching, Linda! The ID4 can do that commute no problem, but you will need to invest in a home charger, at least one that can plug into a dryer outlet or something similar (you don't need to have one fully wired in). The reason for this, is that the home charger that comes with the ID4 (which plugs into a standard wall outlet) only gets you roughly 2.5-3 miles of range per hour of charge, which won't be enough, especially in the cold months. Whereas say a NEMA 14-50 can get you 20-30 miles of range per hour, which would be plenty! I just purchased a NEMA 14-30 charger for my dryer outlet and it gets around 10 miles of range per hour, which would also work for you. Let me know if you have anymore questions!

When to start charging, how long or between what hours, when to warm the cabin. These settings are important in Europe electricity usage is managed by the region. In a way, it’s the same in our electrical region managed by TEP in Tucson. Its best to charge your car at home after 7PM and before 6AM when the rates are reduced. Got a call 4 months after selling it that they had finally received the part to fix my car. Also the infotainment is completely unacceptable, it's frankly dangerous is you ask me. Everything is hard to use and takes the drivers attention away from driving. Why are there two different climate control systems instead of just one the actually works? I wouldn't buy that car again and have told everyone I now to stay away from it. If they just put normal buttons to control things I would probably think it was a good car. Sadly, I feel like it's a car that no one cared about when it was made. If you're thinking of buying this, save yourself the headache and go buy an Ioniq5/Kia EV6. They're SO much better.

    what do you think about the extended warranties for this model? We just purchased the 2023 ID4 Pros and may change our mind about purchasing an extended maintenance plan for 4 yrs as well as an extended Drive Easy Plan, which we are still trying to understand. I know the first 2 yrs of maintenance is covered. But should we really bother extending that 4 years for $1400?

    • @evhelphub
      @evhelphub  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Diane - the ID4 comes with a four-year/50k mile bumper-to-bumper warranty along with an 8-year/100k miles warranty for the high voltage battery. You're getting a model that's had a couple of years worth of "fixes" compared to my 2021 ID4, which has given us zero issues so far. My first question is, how long are you planning on keeping the car? This answer might be different than your prior vehicles, because EV technology in changing so rapidly that you might find it is worth it to trade in in 4 or 5 years.
      Second, keep in mind that EVs have far less components which means much less to worry about breaking over time. Third, the most expensive parts are related to the high voltage battery. Again, you have 8 years/100k miles worth of coverage there already.
      As far as the maintenance plan goes - absolutely do not accept that for $1400. There's almost nothing to maintain on the vehicle over time and what there is, you'll easily pay far less than $1,400. Do not buy this! We have nearly 50k miles on our ID4 and the only thing that has been replaced is the air filter.
      All in all, I would decline all and save your money. Even if you keep the car for 6-8 years, I cannot imagine what would break in that time that would cost thousands in repairs. I hope this helps!

    So a question IO have is how much does it usually cost you to charge at a station that isnt free? Im looking to get one of the for my job (Uber/Lyft) and i wouldnt be able to charge at home, so im curious as to how much it would cost me on average

    • @evhelphub
      @evhelphub  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Casey - that will depend upon the network, state you live in, rate type (power delivered vs time). Charging from 0-100% will net you around 250-275 miles depending upon configuration and should cost between $20-25. Charging networks have memberships that you can consider if there is one that you frequent regularly which has a base cost, but much cheaper per power delivered/time spent charging.
      For those that charge by the minute, you'll never want to charge to 100%. Instead, you'll likely want to stop at around 80%. Something like 10% to 80% (180 miles) is roughly a 30 minute charge and will cost $10-12. Charging significantly slows past 80%.

    We have had a VW in our garage since 2016 and I honestly say that the UI has been the weakest point in all three vehicles. It's not terrible, but tolerable. Nowadays I use Android Auto whenever possible and my wife use Apple Carplay which allows her to control the entertainment system in Korean which is a HUGE win in my book. I have driven the Model 3 and Model X and the Tesla UI is the best that I have come across, but I prefer the build quality and dealer network of VW to the simplicity of the Tesla.

    Can you comment on the tires? Do you need to take it to dealer or any shop can replace the tires? Can u change just one tire that is damaged or do u need to replace all 4 together?

    • @evhelphub
      @evhelphub  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should be able to have them replaced at any shop. The back two tires are different sizes than the front and you can replace the back two (or front two) without replacing all four (I asked VW yesterday). Since I have RWD, my back two tires are balder than the front and will need replaced likely in the next 10,000 miles or less so they do wear pretty fast.

    • @4runner4ever83

      With that torque, the tires will go bald pretty quick unless you drive it like ice cars.

    0-60 in 7.5 seconds is a decently quick time. Back in the 80s that would be premium sports car territory but then I guess I am sounding old.

      That's a good way to look at it! Quick enough for most daily drivers of a crossover, I think. I wouldn't pay more just to go a little quicker.

    Regarding Ford's performance on software updates. As an owner of two MMEs I have to give them a solid C-. The older of our 2 cars is still awaiting the update enabling the BlueCruise autonomous driving functionality after over a year of ownership, and is currently several point revisions behind the most recent shipped software version. The newer of our 2 cars was delivered with BlueCruise enabled and is on the current version or nearly so. So while Ford's ability to ship OTAs has been somewhat better than VW's they still have issues.
    I guess Tesla's proficiency in updating its cars fooled the legacy companies into thinking it's easy.

    • @evhelphub
      @evhelphub  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for this insight! I will still argue that any company that has shipped any software update OTA that has either added features or corrected bugs, is well beyond VW. We are almost at 18 months of ownership and have received zero updates. Not even minor bug fixes. :)
      I agree with you, I hope all of the legacy auto companies get it together!

    Did you have to replace any tires yet or, if not, how is the tread? I have a RWD Pro S that I got in Feb 2022. I love the car so far. Much more comfortable than the Tesla Y and the Ioniq 5. The backup camera is not great. Night time was unusable. Objects to the side look a lot closer than they are. Agree the App is useless.

    • @evhelphub
      @evhelphub  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Greg - I have not yet had to replace the tires. My best guess is that they will need replaced by the end of the year or early 2023. They are starting to be a bit more slippery, but definitely not bald yet.

    • @dansanger5340
      @dansanger5340 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason the backup camera is unusable at night is because of reflected glare off the license plate causing the camera to choose the wrong exposure. There are inexpensive ID4 backup camera hoods available on Etsy and elsewhere which will fix the problem.

    • @evhelphub
      @evhelphub  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Regina! The ID4 is excellent at retaining battery levels of the long-term, even many months. Assuming you are parking the vehicle inside a well insulated garage, you could charge to 50% and leave it unplugged. If it gets really cold in your garage, I'd recommend charging to 50% and leaving it plugged in. Either way, it should be just fine. :)

    Can I get your opinion on whether I should be seriously interested in a AWD 2021 ID4 CarMax is offering for $28K? From what I read the 2024 version has solved many of the quirks however I can't afford that route. Is it still a great car to buy minus rebates, free charging, etc? Hope you'll reply soon.

    • @evhelphub
      @evhelphub  22 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yes. My 2021 has been flawless in terms of reliability and build quality. It has not been to the dealership for service for any reason other than a couple of recalls and a software update. The only downside of a 2021 is the software, which I'm not sure is all that better on the newer models. Plus with CarMax you'll get 7 days to drive it around to make sure everything is in working order. I'd say go for it!

    Can you explain the B mode for driving

    • @evhelphub
      @evhelphub  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Daniel - "B mode" traditionally stands for "braking mode" - without going into super unnecessary detail, on the ID4 when the car is in "D" or drive, there's no (very little) regenerative braking happening, so the car doesn't slow down for you, it just coasts. When you apply the mechanical brakes, regen kicks in to charge your battery instead of just losing that energy entirely. The recharging of the battery is minimal. "B mode" turns on the regenerative braking, where if you lift your foot off of the accelerator, the ID4 will begin to slow you down until about 2-3 mph and then you will "creep" forward like a traditional car. This does not use the brakes, it is a function of the electric motor. To be as efficient as possible, it usually makes sense to drive in "B mode" in the city so you regenerate as much energy back to the battery as possible, and use "d mode" on the highway, so you can coast. I hope that helps!
