    My wife just picked hers up today in Tampa. A 2022 Pro S RWD. It has software version 3.1 I know the lagging software speed has been fixed but am not sure if other annoying features have or not. This is our first EV. We took the 100k miles/10 year full extended warranty. We own Toyotas that have gone 160k miles without anything except battery, brake pads and tire changes. Nothing happens to them but the German engineering stuff I am not so sure about except they want to charge you a lot to fix.

      I've watched multiple reviews for the Id4 and 5 because I opted for an ID.5 GTX. They all talk how multiple updates improved the car, one pedal driving was one of the features added.
      It seems that you only get OTA updates after version 3.0 so with earlier software you have to go to the dealer.

    I learned that the fan speed for the app climate control is based on the last setting you had the last time you drove the car.
    So if the fan speed was low while driving , when you activate through the app, regardless of if it’s 110° outside, the fan will generate a low temp/low fan speed. It doesn’t consider outside temp then modify AC fan speed to get a quick cool down. Just totally dependent on your last setting while you were driving.

    Have had mine since February (ID.4 AWD) and love it! And I completely agree with every point you've made, both the good and the bad. So far I haven't really been annoyed by the quirks, but I have this synergistic feeling of annoyance in support of everyone who is :-) The quirks just aren't applicable to my every-day experience.
    I don't need to schedule charging, for example, because I almost universally can plug it in around noon and peak doesn't start until 4pm. I do leave the climate control on when leaving the vehicle quite often, but I live in a more moderate climate so running at half power isn't so noticeable. I've had a few minor software faults (and the same bad coolant pump that so many others reported, which the dealer replaced very quickly). The car sometimes stops suddenly when backing up on uneven ground or gravel because it thinks I'm going to hit something when I'm not.
    I learned very quickly to turn off the multi-button press features that roll all the windows down and start the climate control (after finding the vehicle in the driveway with all the windows rolled down on two occasions when I thought it was off and secure), and to turn off the mode that unlocks the car as you approach. I have the climate control set to start when the car is unlocked and the car is only unlocked proactively... either by hitting the unlock on the Fob or pulling on the door.
    The app is unusable so... I just don't use it. Stuff like that... all minor annoyances.
    My 'favorite' annoyance is that the car instantly decides you are leaving and wants to turn itself off if you are sitting there in park and just shift your weight a bit on the seat :-). Its kindergarten software programming at best.
    I am a bit disappointed that VW can't seem to get its act together on software updates and yah... it would be so amazing if they would just make the utterly trivial software fixes to all of the little niggling quirks. I'm just gobsmacked that a company like VW can't make even the simplest fixes to their software. But even with all my griping, none of these reach the level where it causes me to dislike the vehicle. I'm happy with it.... just wish VW would make a bit more of an effort on the software's QOL issues.

    Im selling mine tomorrow, 18 months and 61k miles. I will echo pretty much every sentiment here. I love the car it’s been a blast and my first EV but VW (and I loved my Jetta) really let us down. It’s December and we are finally getting a dealer update - I won’t though. The “sit to start” seems like a great idea, until you have to get out the car and then wait a year for it to reboot - and yeah the app is garbage

    Great video.. I have the identical 1st edition as yours... also just now has 17000 miles. If I was to make a video review it would have been just about identical. Same annoyances but still a good car. That SW 3.1 could definitely resolve most of them. My #1 update would be auto hold or 1 pedal driving.. #2 would be plug and charge and it looks like neither are on the update. I'll welcome an updated less glitchy interface though. I paid 45k.. and got 10k IRS and Oregon tax rebates. Still ahead of the game when it comes to resale.. pretty happy with that considering typically losing 20 percent driving a car off the lot is typical. I kinda want to take advantage of that and maybe pre order an AWD '23 which would likely take care of most of my issues and also would reset the warranty... but don't want to go through the hassle either.

    Just a clarification on software updates, they are available in Europe, version 2.4 done at the dealer with some hardware improvements and required to ota version 3.0 that fixes most issues you mentioned like scheduled charging, infotainment issues, etc, it also increases the charging from 125kw to 135kw. The last info I got was that software updates for the US and Canada will go online once the cars are built in the US at the end of summer or in the fall at the latest.

    Very fair and balanced review. While I love how the car drives I totally agree that the SW is the most disappointing part of it and it is incredible that VW can not get their act together here in the US to role the updates. In the EU they did that months ago. Despite all the marketing words VW does not seem to care at all about the US market. The other rather disappointing thing is how much the AC or heating impact the millage (this car can not get past 200 miles in cold or hot weather). Not sure if a heat pump option would actually help much.

    So glad I'm not an early adopter. 2 month after picking ours up and still in love with it. And I still have hope for actually receiving an software update since the 2022s already got them installed.
    Yes, there are things to dislike, like the annoying 30 minutes AC duration. Took our dogs for a road trip to Key West, and I had to pay close attention to my phone and make sure I activate the AC once every 30 minutes is really annoying. The dumbbell drill doesn't work if you are not inside the car. And when using the dumbbell and seatbelt clip, I cannot lock the car from the outside. It seems dumbbell only works if you are sleeping inside the vehicle, and you can lock it from the inside and have AC running. And luckily the app was working good every time I need it to remote start the car.
    I have never had the AC not cooling issue. I have kept the dogs in the car for over an hour on several occasions, and the car is as cool as I set it to. Only one time I had an issue was at the Daytona charger. I had the car charging and after about 30 minutes, I sit back inside with the dogs. And all in a sudden the AC stopped cooling, and it starts to blow hot air. So I had to stop charging and take it to interstate. After 5 minutes driving the AC is back. I suppose that's either because the battery was overheating, or there's some glitch because I did used the delayed AC function when getting out of the vehicle, and it was very hot and humid just after a rain. Too bad that the Car Scanner app took away most of the monitoring from the free version the day before my trip, so I cannot check.
    Just like you said, the ID4 is such a great vehicle from all physical aspects, driving, NVH, etc. But the software is just its Achilles heel.

    • @brandenflasch

    I think your statement about MME's DCFC charging speed being worse is mistaken. I've seen consisent power delivery of around 120-135 kW or even a little more up to where the curve begins to fall off. When I first got the car it pretty much fell off a cliff at 80% SoC but Ford pushed an update that extended the faster part of the curve up to ~90% and made the ramp down a lot more gradual after that, down to maybe 30-35 kW at 95% SoC. If I'm remembering correctly (I've only fast charged our cars maybe 7 times since we got the first one in July 2021 so my recollection might be a little off) the car will charge 10-80% SoC in about a half hour, maybe a little longer, on a 150 kW DCFC.

      I think all the vehicle makers are having a tough time trying to catch up to Tesla. VW isn't going to be any better or worse than any other car maker not named Tesla. So unless your next car is gonna be a Tesla...
      In a sense, I understand the struggle the car makers are having. Their software and firmware practices are stone-age, but it just didn't matter until Tesla came around and started using modern operating systems and the ability to fix software bugs in literally one or two days.
      But now it does matter, and yet the traditional vehicle makers still have no idea just how important their software and firmware programmers have become. And probably won't figure it out until they get dragged through the mud for another year or two with falling sales and poor reviews. The question is whether they can make the transition before otherwise going bankrupt or getting steamrolled by Tesla, or Chinese brands for that matter.

    I want to add several things I personally think VW should do to make it a better car after owning it for 3 months. I think the following are likely easy/cheap things to address (just a guess) and would make it a more successful car (at least to me).
    1) Front doors sound hollow/cheap: Every time I close the door it remind me of cheapness. I can't imagine it would cost much to fix.
    2) The interior door grabs feel cheap/awkward.
    3) I would get rid of the black piano plastic (feels cheap and smudges easily) from high touch areas. It smudges easily and sounds/feels like cheap plastic.
    4) Add a true rear license plate holder (they literally drill holes in plastic bumper to attach license (seems cheap)
    5) In Pro S- add a front camera like the back camera (for the prices of pro-s I think it should have front camera).
    6) All driver side (door) controls should be re-worked. Most complain about the window controls. I can live with that..but hate the door lock controls and most of their controls on the right side. The door lock I think is a liability. I think when light is on it is locked and when not it is unlocked. It seems slow to respond and hard to do without looking at. I would just say these 2 things: (a) be consistent and allow a driver to be able to feel and tell/control rather than have to look at a light to see what stats of control is (b) and/or have a blind person (or just blind fold a person) sit in the car and try to use the controls. I am not advocating the blind drive, but there is a certain touch aspect to controls. Be consistent and have some ability to feel the controls. Most drivers will adapt to a car... but the VW fights the ability to do this with how they did the controls. I would fire whoever approved these controls (especially all the right side ones including headlamps).
    7) I actually am fine with the center controls (I can adapt to most)... but at night... at least in my ID.4... I could not see where volume and temp controls were. If there is no light on them at least put a better feel on them so I know what I am controlling.
    I love the drive of the car. It is peppy and fun to drive. I prefer it in parking lots to the mach-e (likely due to the better turning radius, etc)... but the touch/feel of controls and the sound of the door closing kills my sense of it being a good car. It drives well but so many things feel/sound cheap inside.

    I hear you and some of the things I'll agree with you on and some not. When you took delivery of your car and I ordered mine the pool of Ev's to choose from was minimal. The ID4 was the best equipped at the best price, nowadays we do have choices, we can choose faster charging speed, larger screens, better apps, more technology and makers that offer more OTA updates. I really love my ID4 and we currently have another on order to replace our ICE, with that being said, if Kia would have taken orders we would have ordered the EV6 instead for the reasons I stated earlier. We'll just have to wait for when it arrives to make this decision, if it remains the ID4 we'll still be happy. Good review. We seem to be at the point where Tesla, and pretty much Tesla alone, has charging and software totally nailed. That's their secret sauce, for now at least, but, the German's (and others) design great cars (hello, e-tron GT). Give me an EV with Tesla-quality software & charging, and Audi quality everything else, and I'd buy it. But everything in this review smacks of 'old-school OEM trying to make an EV'. OEM's have always had awful UI's - just let Apple or Google make it for you.
    FWIW, our Rivian is our daily driver right now, not sure if it's the novelty factor, but it's as close as you'll get to a 'normal' truck (albeit EV) with Tesla DNA, no doubt because they trade staff all the time. And it's better put-together than any of the Tesla's we've owned (aside from the tonneau cover, which was DOA, and will be until they redesign it).

    • @brandenflasch
      @brandenflasch  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree, especially now having a Polestar 2. Polestar let Google handle the UI, route planning, etc and it works really well. Route planning is as good, if not better than Tesla - extremely accurate predictions, great Google routing, etc. Yet it also has Volvo build quality.
      Looking forward to getting my Rivian hopefully later this year (latest I've heard is Oct-Nov delivery window), but some of the things I've been seeing/hearing with charging / cooling performance makes me tempted to switch my order to Max Pack in hopes of 800V battery and better thermal performance (and more range certainly doesn't hurt). Really doesn't take much to be built better than a Tesla.

    • @AbstractOcean
      @AbstractOcean ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brandenflasch Yeah. If we're taking a road trip (which is your entire life!) then we're taking a Tesla, I don't want to go back to 2013, messing around with CCS charging, and limited intelligent route planning. That really is the jewel in Tesla's crown, if they start opening up Supercharging to anyone, that's like Apple allow iMessage with Windows and Android..there's a reason Apple doesn't do that!

    • @brandenflasch
      @brandenflasch  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AbstractOcean I've been taking a lot less road trips lately, but CCS infrastructure really isn't as much of an issue as many make it out to be. Tesla Superchargers aren't perfect either and often have degraded performance or just slow charging when sharing power on V2.

VW told him that any replacement motor had to be built specifically for his car and no other motor would work in it. This is outrageous! Each motor has to be built for one and only one car? This is a system that cannot succeed in the future. It's like going back to the early days of the automobile where everything was hand-built and nothing would fit another car. And you know what : he says Elon has decided to give up Tesla to concentrate on Twitter. Surely there is no smoke without fire eh?

      @@domanibell8361 If you had any reading skills you would have gotten the message that VW makes each motor for one specific vehicle and that system is not going to work with any huge recall or motor failures. You don't know that it is only one failure but that was the one I read about. It may be hundreds or thousands but it is a system that will fail. I wouldn't own an EV personally. However, many do but you can't fix stupid.

    This car looks a letter better then the melted jellybean look of Tesla but this is new to VW where Tesla was working on this for a lot more years than VW for a first try this is not a bad vehicle and VW did admit they need to improve SW.

    All these annoying issues will be fixed with software update.

      When? The ID.4 has been out ~18 months now and the 2021s still haven’t had a single update.

    I had a reservation for a 1st edition last year and gave it up, got the Model Y standard range instead for about the same price (limited availability just like the 1st edition ID.4). Model Y is superior in so many ways except maybe ride comfort. Otherwise hands down Model Y is better.

    Can you give your VW account to the new owner so they can get the 2 years left of free fast charging at Electrify America? I think that would be possible.
