Someone at VW needs to hear this. Give current ID.4 owners some of these updates. Namely, battery preconditioning. Even a manual button without route planning would be better than the slow charging we are experiencing. Beta testing with your customers on a $40k - $50k car is just a way to lose loyalty. Do the right thing VW.
Good points, but this is what happens when idiotic bureaucrats and politicians push car makers to rush something out. Tesla evolved naturally. 20 years gave them ample time to get shit right , except build quality. As for 2024 ID.4 , wasn't it supposed to get battery conditioning?
If you’re talking about the volume and climate buttons I’m fine with them but they did take some getting used to. I approach it with an open mind and I don’t long for physical buttons.
I have a 2021 ID.4 Pro S Gradient that has 134,430 miles and the car has been great with zero maintenance cost other then 5 sets of rear & 3 sets of front tires , no brake pad replacement or anything else spent on the car at all , love this car & have always been pleased with it !
The 2021-2023 cars *CAN* do route planning, and it isn't that much different from what you show in the video. It was even there at the initial product release, but you really need to look at the route planning on software 3.1, as they corrected a number of issues along the way that made it far more usable. The one major thing that they did add to 2024 is preconditioning to route planning - that's something the older cars don't have.
I totally agree. I have found that my 23 doesn’t calculate elevation so I have found the route planning a bit optimistic. But that can be offset by changing the setting for remaining range when reaching a charge stop on route. This is not an issue if you have many charging options. Regardless, I only use the built in navigation and it has been fine so far.
I find it odd that the 21-23 cars don't have preconditioning enabled with the very latest update. They do have a battery coolant heater - so why not? Would love to know the specs on the heater, maybe it's slightly higher kW on the 2024 models.
@@fiehlsport VW isn't really saying why not. The heater does come on as soon as you plug into a DCFC, so the older cars are perfectly capable of warming the battery. The missing bit is to add a button to infotainment, and/or somehow tie it into the navigation.
The route planning on 21-23 ID.4s really isn’t bad either, I don’t know why Kyle always hammers on it, it’ll get you to a high power station with a low SoC and have you ride the curve and then go to the next station, it’s a lot better than say Hyundai and Kia’s, which makes you get to a station at like 50% and charge up to 100%, which is awful.
You did a video a year or two ago comparing the ID.4 with the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Now that both cars have been updated, I wish you'd do an updated comparison video.

A couple of weeks ago I traded in my VW 2022 ID4 for a Kia EV9 with no regrets. ID4 was decent, but I felt like a forgotten child. During the time I owned it, about 12 months, no software update, no plug-in charge, no preconditioning… and there were a few times, I was driving and the screen and the dash screen would go blank… they just didn’t take care of their existing customers. The focus was all on new buyers. Happy to give it to Kia and drive away with an amazing EV9
Based mainly on your recommendations, we bought a RWD 2021 Pro S w/gradient. Really, really loved that car. Only reason we sold it recently was my penchant for the Tesla Model X Plaid. I'd definitely recommend the ID4 all day long. Thanks Kyle!!
A lot of people don't appreciate Tesla vehicles. A colleague’s Model Y is experiencing significant wear; the moldings are detaching, there are creaking sounds, and the interior panels are not secure, among other issues. In contrast, my 2021 ID.4 remains solid. The ID.4 represents a reliable choice in its category. I’m eagerly anticipating the experience of driving the 2024 model.
You mean people don't appreciate legacy manufacturer EVs and praise Tesla too much? I agree that there is a misconception about what Tesla actually offers for the money. The Model Y has one of the worst specs for the money today and build quality of all Teslas are below average. I see $13,000 in lease incentives for 2023 ID.4 AWD S Plus with the SK battery. That might be worth considering if you’re looking for a deal to upgrade from a Pro to AWD Pro S. My lease is up in October so I’m debating if it makes sense to get this deal or wait to lease a 24 model.
7:23 Regarding the battery-limited power output of the 2024 (330 hp) is there a different F:R bias for the power delivery than the 100:195 hp that the 2021-2023 AWD had? Could an OBDII dongle be used to see if it dynamically adjusts more bias to the rear and dials back the front motor?
We have an ID3 2021, and we love it, it hasn't missed a beat - great fun to drive and super comfortable. 4 miles plus per KW. so please we've got one. I've also got an Audi Etron 55. Unfortunately it's spent more time with the garage than on our drive
I really wish VW would roll out an ID.4 R that had about 500HP, 4-wheel disc brakes (yes, I know odd ask on a new car in 2024), the new larger battery pack from the ID.7, DCC, sport seats and a bit of visual flare from the GTX model. It’s odd they’re one of the only automakers not offering a performance version of their mainstream EV crossover.
@@mart0225 I do wish they would offer DCC and not force 21” wheels on the new Pro S model. Big wheels are the single biggest range killer on EVs. I’ve swapped out the big OEM wheels on my last two EVs and gone from 20” to 18” on my Model 3P and 21” to 19” on my EV6 GT. Range jumps by 20-25% just simply downsizing wheels and going with certain tires that are still good for driving enjoyment but also efficiency-minded. The improvement in steering response, ride quality and cost savings on tires alone makes a huge difference too. I spent the same amount buying a set of 19” wheels and tires for my EV6 as a replacement set of tires alone in the OE 255/40R21 size would have cost. The tires are double the cost going up to 21”.
At the end of 2024, I'll buy my first EV, and I expect to get a Facelift ID.4 vs. Facelift Ioniq 5 vs. Facelift EV6 vs. Tesla Y Juniper vs. Polestar 4 video to help me decide which one to get.
@@theairstig9164 3 and 4 are brand new on a new system and honestly feels like a restart for the brand. I think they are quite interesting, but also very expensive. It's not a big chance that I'll get one, but I`ll keep an eye.
According to “ car and drivers” : Prices are up by between $1010 and $1860 compared with last year's ID.4, with the ID.4 Pro now starting at $46,300, the Pro S costing $51,420, and the top ID.4 Pro S Plus starting at $54,600.
Best thing about the 2024 ID4 is it is the first electric VW that will be sold in Australia, and seems it will be priced reasonable compared to the Model Y. (There is significant EV demand in Australia but supply has been terrible)
I just looked at the VW Australia website. Rumor is that the model is supposed to be delivered in July 2024 but they can’t be ordered and there is no way of knowing the specification. My guess is they won’t be available in 2024 but I was wrong about the delivery dates of the first RHD Tesla Model 3 too. Drive reported the base model could be as much as $80k before on road costs. There goes your Tesla beater
@@theairstig9164 I don’t have a lot of faith in VW Australia. Historically gouging in service has been a real issue (I speak as someone who was told my car needed thousands of work, to having only a basic service by the local ex factory mechanic. The work they were trying to do was done 7 years later…). So I suspect this golden goose is more of an EV albatross than for even the other ICE makers.
I love that there are so many great electric car choices now. When I got my Kona EV in early 21 it’s was practically my only option. Now when I start looking for its replacement later this year I have so many choices. I can finally shop for a car that fits me again instead of sacrificing everything just to get electric.
I do like my id4 but this is a nice upgrade. Is the app different, can you lock/unlock the doors from the app? May need to look at upgrading soon, thanks for the video
Love my 2021 and charge at home 98% of the time. Here in Canada it seems the 2024's will be about $10,000 - 12K more for similar package as my Pro AWD.
From what I've heard, no, and I think this is the biggest failing of legacy automakers in general compared to Tesla/Rivian/Lucid. My 5 year old Model 3 is still getting the latest UI updates and fixes, once or twice a month. There's a big psychological buying dilemma for me when i see a design flaw in the UI of a car, in terms of thinking "well they'll get that sorted soon enough" versus "I'm going to be stuck with that, can I live with it?"
@@lowfuel6089 Yeah. I love my 2022 Model 3. I'm interested in the new Rivian R2 as Rivian is pretty good with software updates from what I hear but with legacy automakers I have the same issues/concerns as you. Thanks for the info.
Test drove the 2023 AWD model today and looking to test drive the 2024 on Monday. They are just doing the PDI on the first ones here on the west coast (BC, Canada). Aiming to get one in days!
Hi Kyle, I wish that with every review you covered whether the car has a dog mode, or at least the ability to leave the car locked and running with the AC on, and for what period of time. Looking for a non-Tesla vehicle with good capability for that. Thank you!
I recently leased a leftover 2023 ID4 w/ the SK battery due to gettting an amazing lease deal. From what i've seen so far even a base 2024 ID4 would be way more expensive to lease than the deal I got a loaded plus model. Yeah, I'd love the new infotainment system but it just wasn't worth paying several hundred more a month for that!
My 2021 is in the shop for the second time having LG modules replaced. If I had the available funds to update I would still wait another year to see what has to be recalled on this one and maybe having NACS port installed.
So happy to see they ditched the split armrests in favor of a wide center armrest. When I saw the split armrests on the original ID4 I stopped paying attention to it - that was a deal-killer for me.
I have a 23 with the American style wide armrest. Personally, I'd have preferred the cool split armrests that the older models (and europe) gets. To each their own.
@karmendimas5274 They need to put simple shit back in cars. Mechanical door handles, regular buttons and knobs instead of sensitive and expensive sensors.
You should only notice when it gets close to 10% SOC. The difference is the overhead between the battery voltage and the motor voltage. If the battery SOC goes from 440v to 320v but the motor voltage is 360v you are going to lose peak power at about 365v. Bjorn Nyland covers this. It’s not a bug it’s a feature. When max power isn’t available, a warning will appear.
While you resent people who use the free charger benefit it was a major factor for those considering EVs; I wonder how that reduction will affect sales
To be honest, I’m happy with my VW ID.4 Pro S AWD… I just hope 🤞😬🤞that pre-2023 get the 4.0 infotainment update down the road. Moving the black bar and home button on the left side (in my opinion, so much wasted space) of the screen to the bottom gives the screen a much bigger feel. The precondition is nice for those in colder climates and now backlit thermostat and volume buttons. I actually like my shifter next to the screen on the steering wheel, it is unique. The driver side window controls don’t bother me as much, but not exactly a choice I would have gone with.
Kyle, Tesla MY is definitely more expensive: - $1,000 more per year for insurance - $1,000 Trailer hitch mount not standard (ID4 upper trim has it) - No free Supercharging (ID4 gets free 1,400 kWh in Canada over 4 years) 6.40% vs 3.99% finance rate over 60 months $1,000 No roof rails (ID4 has it standard and you can use your existing cross bars; just maybe need different mount) All these add up to ~$15,000 over 8 years. So, cost and value is not comparable between the two. And now with the significant updates, the ID4 is a truly compelling option!
I got a great Garmin DriveSmart to use instead of the ID.4 nav. The VW nav system is rudimentary, routing can be goofy, has very limited storage of "favorites" and favs can't be organized into folders of commonality. To power Garmin, I found a USB-C to 12 v outlet. One oddity with VW nav, it won't to a round trip: point A to point B to point A. Also, why does VW nav keep showing me gas stations?
Hello Sir, I am in market for EV and following are the SUVs i am thinking. ID.4, Equinox EV and Model Y. ID 4 i want to try PRO S Plus Because of the 360° camera. However VW has removed this trim from their website. Do you have any information if it will be back to be ordered? Also, could you please do a comparison and which one tk opt for out of the three models i shared above? Please 🙏
Drum brakes on the rear makes a lot of sense on EVs, protected from the elements and less maintenance and drag (disc brakes always touch the rotors a little bit).
If one didn't want a Tesla, but wanted a 5-seater hatchback EV, would you say that this is the best option right now? (It seems like it is, but I'd like to know opinions from experienced EV owners.)
I had an ID.4 on order in Canada, but the price increase over 18 months since I placed the order is ridiculous for what you get. We don’t need another car right now and the Rivian R2 seems like a way better value even if it is pricer. Already reserved an R2.
You know what is even better value than the R2? The upcoming electric 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLC 4Matic or BMW iX3 XDrive. They should have over 360-365miles EPA range, compared to the 310-315miles of the dual motor Rivian R2. They also have an 800V architecture (Rivian might have 900V) and will charge with 275-300kW. No need to buy those start-up brands, even Tesla is hella outdated now
@@FredBC79 The Rivian R2 is also not close to 45k. The small battery RWD model is estimated at 45k starting price, probably without nice interior options or even the self-driving functions which Rivian announced on stage. For an offraod vehicle the small battery and RWD automatically disqualifies it, the range is around 260-270miles on a full charge for that model. For 2026/2027 that is abysmal. And this is based on the trust that Rivian actually delivers these numbers at this price point. It can easily cost 46k or 47k in 2.5 years from now. The AWD big battery car will cost around 55k, with some interior, tech and extra equipment options you will be at 60k. 60k is around the same ballpark as for other premium mid-size SUVs with AWD. Rivian is using cheap marketing tricks here, similar to Tesla and Fisker, in order to push their vehicle reservation game and get money for free. Legacy manufacturers actually offer the best EVs for the money at this point (or at least in the upcoming months).
Nice!. I have the 21 First edition... i don't mind the software. Even if they didn't update the in-car software why couldn't they just update the app for us 21-22 owners the route planning within the android/iphone app? That seems like it would be easy for them and solve a lot of problems. Also is the hardware for battery preconditioning and plug and charge in our 21-22 ID4's? I would love those features... but if the software and those 2 features and the car being a bit faster is the only differences I'm gonna have to problem passing on them until I get my Rivian R2 if the company survives and it gets delivered.

That is the perfect red color.
I wish VW would sell a comfort spec with smaller wheels, DCC, and the Euro comfort seats.
What happened to the HUD heads up display? 2024 U.S. models don't have it listed as an option on VW web site....
Finally a software update for the ID.4, I heard it was needed lol. Great video as always!
Glad to see VW ID.4 is getting some much needed updates. Now if we could only get them to stop sitting at chargers till 100% that would be great
The 2024 will not have the free charging from EA, so those days are numbered..
He addressed that in the video.
Watch the video.
Once available, how long does one have to wait after placing an order?
... yes
In Australia it’s also “yes”
At the end of 2024, I'll buy my first EV, and I expect to get a Facelift ID.4 vs. Facelift Ioniq 5 vs. Facelift EV6 vs. Tesla Y Juniper vs. Polestar 4 video to help me decide which one to get.
Good selection of competitors. I read that the Tesla Y Juniper will not come out until 2025 though.
@@MorboDDestroyer I think it will. The competition is getting stronger and it will force the hand.
Drop Polestar anything. Thank me later
@@theairstig9164 3 and 4 are brand new on a new system and honestly feels like a restart for the brand. I think they are quite interesting, but also very expensive. It's not a big chance that I'll get one, but I`ll keep an eye.
@@NDAWELOLnah. Tesla is the only sensible choice unless you're getting those other EVs as a grocery getter
YES! Compare 2024, ID. 4, Model Y, Ioniq 5, Chevy Blazer EV
I'm shopping.
+ polestar 3-4
According to “ car and drivers” : Prices are up by between $1010 and $1860 compared with last year's ID.4, with the ID.4 Pro now starting at $46,300, the Pro S costing $51,420, and the top ID.4 Pro S Plus starting at $54,600.
All that's before all the dealers' bogus fees and unwanted addons.
My guess is they won’t be available in 2024 but I was wrong about the delivery dates of the first RHD Tesla
Model 3 too.
Hey can you review & rang test long rang phev’s like the mb GLE 450e or the bmw x5e and other’s extra?
I love that there are so many great electric car choices now. When I got my Kona EV in early 21 it’s was practically my only option. Now when I start looking for its replacement later this year I have so many choices. I can finally shop for a car that fits me again instead of sacrificing everything just to get electric.
It would be good to review cost of insurance as well
Would the 2021 ever get this software?
Bidirectional charging?
Available, at least in Europe
I loved the comparison with the jag, kia, and everything. An update would be siiiiick.
Electric SUV comparison for 2024 is a great idea for an OOS video.
Love my 2021 👍
Just bought Martian wheels so combined with the H&R springs it looks even better now :)
I do like my id4 but this is a nice upgrade. Is the app different, can you lock/unlock the doors from the app? May need to look at upgrading soon, thanks for the video
I heard ID.4 2024 no longer has free 3-year charging? It's got some fixed amount of kWh credit?
Well done, Kyle, thank you. Definitely interested in seeing a eSUV comparison video.
Love my 2021 and charge at home 98% of the time. Here in Canada it seems the 2024's will be about $10,000 - 12K more for similar package as my Pro AWD.
Kyle could use a link to the older review. Was curious about the miles per kw at 70mph
Wait, they FINALLY give you seat ventilation? But still no HUD?
Will earlier ID.4's be getting the software update?
@@joshmatlock1020 I reserved an R2, can't wait. :D
@@lowfuel6089 I did too. As soon as I saw I could.
Thank You everybody for All that you are doing for our Planet Earth.... Peace.. Shalom.. Salam.. Namaste 🙏🏻 😊 🌈 ✌ ☮ ❤
I doubt it but I hope the 2023 models will get the software updated too. Love my id 4 pro plus
I recently bought the 2024 id4, so do i still get 30mins free charging or just the 500kwh free? Im confuse i was told 30 mins free
Do you mind sharing what you paid? Down payment if any? Monthly payments? Final msrp…thanks
It will be very helpful if you share your lease details. Many of us are in the market to go for a 23 model, if the price is right.
My 2021 is in the shop for the second time having LG modules replaced. If I had the available funds to update I would still wait another year to see what has to be recalled on this one and maybe having NACS port installed.
Nice car! Great positive upbeat review, refreshing 👍🏼
So happy to see they ditched the split armrests in favor of a wide center armrest. When I saw the split armrests on the original ID4 I stopped paying attention to it - that was a deal-killer for me.
AGREED! and the piano black nonsense needs to STOP also, that is soooo dated!!
Is this website have a review for a Fisker extreme? Please let me know your opinion. Thanks
Great review as always. Do you know if available power drops off as steeply with SOC? That's the only gripe i have with my 2023 S AWD
Like that it has one of the highest ground clearance. 5.9” or 6”?
I think this my next car - I was a small SUV and the Model 3 is getting a little old.
I test drove the new model 3. I liked it.
Kyle, Tesla MY is definitely more expensive:
- $1,000 more per year for insurance
- $1,000 Trailer hitch mount not standard (ID4 upper trim has it)
- No free Supercharging (ID4 gets free 1,400 kWh in Canada over 4 years)
6.40% vs 3.99% finance rate over 60 months
$1,000 No roof rails (ID4 has it standard and you can use your existing cross bars; just maybe need different mount)
All these add up to ~$15,000 over 8 years.
So, cost and value is not comparable between the two.
And now with the significant updates, the ID4 is a truly compelling option!
I found ID4 with 40 000km from 10/21 77kwh battery for 25000€. I think that is great value
It seems the European ID4s with 4.0 software have a store where you can get a native Spotify app. Why didn't they bring that to the U.S.?
Do all these updates transfer over to the Q4 Etron?
Do phone contacts work? This feature still doesn't work in my id4
Will my 23 model be able to get the software updates?
cant the new software be implemented onto the 2023 models as well?
I got a great Garmin DriveSmart to use instead of the ID.4 nav. The VW nav system is rudimentary, routing can be goofy, has very limited storage of "favorites" and favs can't be organized into folders of commonality. To power Garmin, I found a USB-C to 12 v outlet. One oddity with VW nav, it won't to a round trip: point A to point B to point A. Also, why does VW nav keep showing me gas stations?
Hello Sir,
I am in market for EV and following are the SUVs i am thinking.
Please 🙏
Love your video, Kyle - still love my ID.4 😊
Does it have one-pedal driving?
Drum brakes on the rear makes a lot of sense on EVs, protected from the elements and less maintenance and drag (disc brakes always touch the rotors a little bit).
If one didn't want a Tesla, but wanted a 5-seater hatchback EV, would you say that this is the best option right now? (It seems like it is, but I'd like to know opinions from experienced EV owners.)
Just an amazing car, I love it!
Fantastic job on the review. I’m monitoring this car and may purchase
So no SW updates to the outgoing models?
VW should offer a software/hardware retro fit for prior years.
yes do a comparison between vw id4 and Tesla model y and mustang mach e
Kyle I am also in Pasadena. I hope you enjoyed your stay.
question: has anyone seen the 2025 id4 yet? i'm seeing videos online but i don't know if it's actually the 2025 model
Great top notch quality review tytyty shout out to super Dave …. Tougher than a 2023 Ford
No need to buy those start-up brands, even Tesla is hella outdated now
@@Aztasu Those models are hardly comparable. They won’t even be close to the $45k base of the R2.
@@FredBC79, I will be very surprised if you will be able to get R2 for that price. Assuming they are able to make them.
Wish it had NACS port
It likely will inside of 12 months
WHERE IS ALL THE TESTING ON THE NEW ID.4 YOU PROMISED? WE ARE WAITING.....
I've always liked the style and build quality of the ID4, but despite the upgrades, I can't yet give up my full Supercharger access I get in my Tesla. I am hoping in a few short years that might change as IONNA and others join the charging party. The future looks good
In Canada VW offers 1,400 kWh of free DC fast charging in the first 4 years for buyers of 2023 and 2024 models. Nice!
Almost 3x of the 500 kWh that Kyle said you get in the States.
Why did makayla get rid of hers so fast?
We want to know!
