Nice video. I opted for the ID4 when the Model Y started at $65k and the ID4 started at $43k. It was really a no-brainer at that point, although the Model Y has had massive price cuts since then.
I'm actually getting very good range on my 2023 RWD ID4, with estimated summer range showing at 250 to 270 at 80% charge, which I have confirmed in real world driving. On my last long day trip, the real world range was the equivalent of 325 miles, versus EPA range of 275 miles.
TH-camr Bjorn Nyland compared cargo capacity with his "banana box test," which is exactly what it sounds like. He found that the Model Y and ID4 can carry the exact same number of banana boxes in the rear, with the Model Y having room for one extra banana box in the frunk. So, they're actually closer than many people think.
Ride quality is a matter of taste, but I much prefer a softer ride like in the ID4. I'm all about comfort.
You're right that the ID4 app is trash. It can reasonably reliably be used to check charge status, and turn charging on and off, but that's about all I use it for. It would be nice to have a full featured app like Tesla has.
Regarding the infotainment, the Model Y has much better built-in software, but the ID4 supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which the Model Y doesn't. I love Android Auto, and prefer it to built-in apps for several reasons: Huge choice of apps, automatic synching of music and podcasts entering and leaving vehicle, no monthly fees like in Model Y. Because I use it all the time, for me a car without support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is a big negative, almost to the point of being a dealbreaker.
Model Y has a better charging network for sure. But, I think that will even out, and disappear entirely if Tesla follows through with their plans to turn the charging network into a profit center by opening it up to other vehicles. Like a lot of people, I rarely ever use fast charging, so it's not a huge consideration for me.
Overall, I'm very happy with the ID4. My biggest complaint by far is that it doesn't automatically lock the doors when you walk away. But, that's pretty minor in the grand scheme of things.
For anyone getting a new EV, the Model Y is definitely the safe bet. It's like the old saying in IT "You'll never get fired for choosing IBM." But, if you know exactly what is important to you in an EV, and do a lot of research, the ID4 might be a better fit for some people.

I can't say who's the safer bet, esp since Tesla/Musk wants and needs OTA updates to fix everything for you.
IF you are in the US, Tesla is the only real one available in volume. In the EU, I would never consider one, but ironically they all are made better.

@@dansanger5340 Well, atm they are now $3k more than they were when they first came out for comparable battery size. And no news on having a heat pump in the US made ones.

Since this video was made, I think VW has fixed many of their problems. I bought a 2023 AWD ID4 about a month ago, and it does have OTA updates. I haven't used Electrify America much, but when I did, I didn't have any problems. As for the tires, the dealer told me right up front that the front and rear tires were different. So I would say that VW is cleaning up its act. One more thing - both cars are vastly better than any ICE car.

We actually have both as well. I drive a Model Y Long Range and my wife drives an ID.4 Pro S RWD. I am very happy with both purchases and have no regrets overall. i think the tesla is superior with regard to infotainment, range, navigation and charging. but i think the vw has a better ride, build quality and it has a sun shade. there isn't enough tint in the world to block out the Georgia sun.

As an "elderly" owner, the comfort of the ID4 Pro S seats, the seating height & ease of getting in & out of the car are all really great. And the tight turning circle makes it park like a gocart. The driving range is totally adequate for my purposes & I like the solid feel of it. I bought mine used, with less than 25k on the odometer for less than $20k, after the $4k direct-from-dealer IRS rebate.

I’ve taken one day trip that required public charging, used an EA charger for free charging & it was flawless. So this car suits me just fine. Your comparison between the two was great, thank you!

Why does everyone go on about how great the navigation is in the model y? They don't even have an option to "avoid highways" which EVERY SINGLE satnav I've ever used has. A truely good navigation is in Polestar with its android automotive and Google maps.
I owned a model y for a year and have owned 5 EVs and the model y is my least favorite....no one talks about the stuff the model y lacks.
    No rear wiper
No sun shade(you did mention that)
    No blind spot monitoring
    No 360 view
    No cross traffic momitors
    No "avoid highways" on maps
    Harsh ride(mentioned that)
    Loud
Worst auto wipers on the planet(even Elon acknowledged this)
    No wiper stalk
    No driver
Paint that pops off unbelievably easy
Can't talk to service when needed ...have to use messaging which at times can be very frustrating when trying to describe issues.
Door handles that freeze shut in cold climates
No buttons or switchgear. And yes this is important for ergonomics and to provide a safe and enjoyable drive.
I'm taking delivery of an id4 on Monday which will be my 6th ev so I'm not sure how it will compare to my model y but I really didn't enjoy my y at all. But it can make fart noises so it's all cool.

I have been driving a VW ID4 for about 3 weeks, and I really dig it. I have the ProS AWD in Moonstone Grey, and I have had a lot of compliments on both the interior and exterior. The interior is well-built, clean and simple. The exterior is very distinguished, especially at night. I have received compliments on both from friends and strangers. It is clearly still a novelty vehicle, though it could be mistaken for a Tiguan to the casual observer. Bottom line, no problem pulling this VW into the valet lane at a black tie event.
The driving experience has evolved into multiple modes: ECO, Comfort, Sport and AWD and all are true to their description. Sport in particular is a blast with a one pedal driving experience. Tried out the AWD on a morning with a slick of skim snow on the roads and it had a performance consistent with an Audi Quattro in a similar condition; it remains to be seen how it will work under more challenging conditions, but the point is that I could be confident with a no-slip experience.
Speaking of the driving experience, speed is a factor. Between the very quiet interior and the lack of sensation from a working ICE or transmission one can readily drift into a 90+ MPF situation if there is no traffic on the highway; again, part of the learning curve as an EV driver. Totally agree with this guy on the regenerative braking experience, but that also is part of the adaptation to the EV driving experience IMHO.
There are a lot of criticisms of the infotainment system in reviews throughout the web but I found it no harder to adapt than any other new gizmo. (For the record, I have test driven the Tesla Model S several times and it never put the bite onto me in any category.) I definitely agree that the Apple CarPlay features are in many ways superior to the proprietary VW system, but I have found that to be the case with the software offered in US domestic cars such as the Camaro. Pick your interface and move on.
The app definitely needs work, but as a longtime VW owner and enthusiast I have every confidence that VW will improve that feature in the near future. There is definitely a lag in turning on the climate control and defrosters from the app. I have not torture tested the Electrify America charging network because I live about .4 miles from my dealer where I get free charging. It has been gratifying enough so far to drive down there, plug it in, glance down the street at the Exxon station where petrol is $4.69 for unleaded regular and then cross the street to a great Italian restaurant for dinner. To date, I have paid $20 for a single charge as part of stashing the vehicle in a parking garage in Manhattan so that was an expensive convenience charge. The road trip experience awaits, but I am not deterred. I like the leisurely pause on the road to the destination.
Bottom line, as with most tech, one needs to make a decision as to how an EV, particularly the ID4, fits into your lifestyle. I am meshed with my karma with the ID4. Like Dr. Hunter S. Thompson said, "Buy the ticket, take the ride".

    • @lankyscatchannel9032

I don’t think I disagree with anything you wrote. My problems were unreliable charging away from home (too much worry when EA failed or was down) and the cargo size. I knew this going in thinking it wouldn’t be a factor, but it was. They do look great, are quiet, perform very well, but the other factors were weighted heavily for my needs.

Love the turning headlights and curb lights, accent lights, illuminated logos on our VW. Love there is a sunshade and it’s quiet with no electric motor sound. Love that it’s comfortable and has massaging seats. Love that VW probably won’t screw me over in the near future and if I do need something I can reach a human, not an app. Love I can control the driving modes, control regen braking option, and can physically move a vent- a vent to hvac system that doesn’t sound like a tornado. But what about the lack of heat pump in US!? No problem- there’s a heated window for that. VW>Tesla any day. I’ve owned 2 of each.

In Canada... (all prices in CDN $)
    The VW ID4 (275 miles of range) starts at $40,000 - $12,000 (tax credit) = $28,000
    The Tesla Model Y (330 miles of range) starts at $70,000 - $5,000 (tax credit) = $65,000
It's surprising folks are ready to pay 2.3x the price for the Tesla. Based on your experience, would you pay so much more for the Model Y?
And that's after yesterday's massive price cut, the Model Y started at $85,000 before the $15,000 price reduction.

Turn radius on id4 is one of most underrated features. When I bought my ID4 it was 10k cheaper than model Y plus 7500 incentive, if they were priced same probably go for model Y only for better charge network. Great review of both cars!

I watched a TH-cam by a guy called 'Care Car Nut" who did a review on Tesla Model Y and came up with a great idea: Tesla should license its EV tech to real car companies who know how to build a vehicle . You are able to provide a unique perspective by actually owning both vehicles. I have about 7,000 miles on a Pro S AWD id.4, and only have limited exposure to the Model Y based on driving friends' vehicles. That said, there are a few things I would disagree with in your assessment of the id.4. First, the range - we regularly are driving 230-280 miles per full charge before having to charge again. Your sub-200 mile experience doesn't sound right. Secondly, we have made extensive use of the Electrify America network for free fast charging. I live on the east coast, so maybe there is a higher density of those stations than where you live to account for the difference in experience, but in those 7,000 miles (which has included many long road trips), I have yet to pay a penny in fast charging. Third, I subjectively find the build quality and ride quality of the id.4 to be vastly superior to the Model Y. The damping is better, the ride is smoother and more compliant, and to me the cabin is substantially quieter. All of those things add up over longer road trips. You mentioned the ambient lighting in the id.4, but the overall interior lighting is also superior (in my opinion) to the Model Y, which feels like a cave at night. I also own three different trailers, so towing is key for me. I didn't have to pay anything to get a tow hitch and related wiring installed - it was standard with the id.4. The one modification I did there was to replace the 1.25" receiver with a bolt-compatible 2 inch one, so I wouldn't have to use an adapter. Lastly, VW has nice touches, like the motorized glass roof screen, absent in the Model Y, and I also feel the interior materials are nicer than the Model Y. The storage space difference is as you described, and for that I envy the Model Y. That said, my family of four can still easily do multi-day overnight trips and bring everything we need to. The 30.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats is still substantially more than the 16.4 cubic feet in the 2012 Hyundai Sonata that this car replaced. And at the time we purchased it (December of 2022), the Model Y was not eligible for the full $7,500 tax credit, but this model year 2023 made-in-Tennessee id.4 was, so it was substantially cheaper than the Model Y.

Hi, I Live in Canada and I have narrowed my choice to those 2 cars. Nevertheless, here in the north Prices are quite similar between the RWD MY (around $60K) and the ID4 AWD Pro S (Around $60K) all toys. Both on them have incentives from government ($12K). Unfortunately the AWD MY is more expensive Dual Motor (Longe Range ($70K) only has 5K of incentives. So that gives a huge difference in price between the 2 models you are comparing to, being the VW 17K cheaper at the end. I drove them all S,3,X,&Y at Tesla yesterday and was exhausted from the adrenaline rush and fell in love with ID4 a few weeks ago. Diving back in to drive ID4 again today. Go Zags indeed!!!! There are things with the ID4 I really felt was withheld from me. Tires in the front and back are different sizes, so no rotating and they will wear much faster. Then asked about it the sales at VW downplayed it. It's a big deal.
If you're just cruising around town (charging at home) and don't need much cargo area, the ID4 is pretty cool.....but.
ID4 is put together well, but it's just not well thought out. The Tesla I'm actually loving more and more the longer I've owned it. The app is ridiculously amazing and more importantly, helpful. Cooling car before you get there...remotely view cameras, check charge, see location....etc. Id4 app was horrible....almost a joke.
If you aren't going to be charging at home, the Electrify America network is so bad, it's actually scary. The Tesla superchargers are plentiful and just simply work.
The Y is the perfect vehicle in my opinion. Great price, great size, great efficiency. People will knock it because "everyone has one." That's because it's a great vehicle. There are cons for sure, but the pros far outweigh them for my needs. (small things that can be resolved with aftermarket products)
I did have some buyers remorse a few months after getting the ID4. On the other hand, my wife (who didn't want a Tesla) is considering getting a Tesla for herself.
If you happen to get a Tesla, use my referral link: ts.la/jason27133 I think you get $500-1000 off depending on what model you get, and I get some supercharger miles!!!

thanks for your insights, trying to help my aunt decide between the two. I am currently pushing her toward a 2023 id4 pro s awd over the model y mainly and only due to the price difference. 2023 id4 pro s still qualifies for the $7500 fed tax credit til the end of the year since the 23 models are built in Chattanooga TN now plus NJ is giving her an extra $2k in rebate for evs under $55k so ends up being around $45k out the door for an id4 pro s awd. I agree the Tesla is better but is it $20k better at its current price? I don't think so. Also the id4 now does auto lane changes which you have to pay Tesla $6k extra to get that feature. But if they were the same price, I would most likely get the Tesla.

I’ve owned a new 22 id4 since 11/2022. Been on four road trips and charged with EA every time with very few issues. Never left without charging though. Also never had an issue with software updates. Seems to be an outdated problem. It’s all personal preference I guess, and I’ve never driven a MY. Drove a M3 for a week, and loved some of the features. The cameras and automatic shut-off with the turn signals are fantastic. The range on the M3 was almost identical to the id4. But I did hate the turning radius and was annoyed that every function is on one screen. I still prefer steering wheel controls and CarPlay. Seats on the M3 were very comfortable, but I did wonder how bigger people would fit in them. It was tight for me, and I’m 5’11”/180. Interior build quality is definitely better on the id4, but they’ve been making cars a lot longer. The piano black needs to go for the reasons you stated.

Planning my next car, I have been a bit torn between the ID.4 and the TMY, but landed on the Tesla; even if the VW is a nice drive, the range and features in the Tesla makes it superior. I own an European ID.4 First Edition and have driven a Tesla Model 3 very often. I basically agree with your review. However, my ID.4 has recently being updated over the air to the 3.0 version and many, many software flaws have been fixed. Travel assist works great now and the capacitive steering wheel makes no necessary to move it for the car to detect you are there (not available in Tesla). The App is not great but now it works and Volkswagen has changed and updated the backend servers so the communication with the vehicle now works. Recently Tesla has dropped the prices and now for 45k€ you can buy a Tesla Model Y (range 430km) or an ID.4 (range 520km). Nevertheless, I have to say that the software in Tesla cars is way better than the software in Volkswagen cars. But, as you said in the video, the build quality is way better in Volkswagen (despite the ugly piano black plastic).

  • @jimmurphy5355
    @jimmurphy5355 ปีที่แล้ว

Massive price drop on the Model Y in January, combined with the return of the $7,500 tax credit in January now make the Model Y just about the same price, and lower in some cases, than an ID 4. Tesla also retuned the suspension in late 2022, and the new "comfort suspension" greatly improves the ride comfort. Given that the ID5 has less range and much poorer road trip charging, unless you hate something about the Model Y, it is no longer much of a contest about which is the better buy and better car.

great video, I have a 2023 ID.4 Pro S , I'm am debating going with a Used 2021 Model Y with roughly 20K miles. Range worries with me used, is it going to be more than a new Id4. I don't know. I really want more range and I think a used Model Y will give me that. and the there are superchargers everywhere and faster then EA. The more space in the back of the Model Y looks a lot better too. I'm undecided right now / how much would you say you spend on charging with model Y on long roadtrips and is it really 15 mins to 80%?

    • @lankyscatchannel9032
      @lankyscatchannel9032  ปีที่แล้ว

I'd go with a new Model Y instead of used. You're going to pay about $1500-2000 more for a new Model Y (without including tax benefits), and if you take delivery before 2024 you get 6 months free supercharging and it ends up being $5000 less than a used.
Superchargers are so much better than EA. It's crazy to me nobody else has figured out making a charging experience as seamless as Tesla.
Truth is I don't pay all that much. Once you get into locations traveling there are often places you can charge level 2 for free. The few times I've had to charge it's like 50% as much as gas. They're also in nice locations where you don't mind hanging out. Speed of charging seems about the same....maybe a little faster with supercharger. Then HUGE difference is how easy it is with Tesla. Just plug in.....that's it. No app, wondering if the stall works, or the delay in the start of charging like with EA.
Model Y storage it MUCH bigger than ID4. I love the Y and would get another for sure.

They have improved the ride quality on the 2023 Model Y. Not sure how you figure that the ID.4 is $10K cheaper. You pretty much have to get the ID.4 AWD Pro S to equal the Model Y AWD standard range. You are still getting less range on the ID.4 at that point, with a higher 0-60 time, no rear seat heaters. And that is $53K for the ID.4 vs $48K for the Model Y.
If you are comparing the lowest ID.4, to the lowest Model Y, then the ID.4 is about $9K cheaper. But you give up the panoramic roof, the rear seat heaters, power adjustable seats, heated steering wheel, AWD, 70 miles in range, 2.8 seconds in 0-60 time.
Definitely if you could only afford around $35K for a car after tax and tax credit, then go for the ID.4. More people will be able to afford that, than the $46K for the cheapest Model Y. But to just get to the cheapest AWD version of ID.4, you are going to be looking at $45K after tax and tax credit.

Yeah the ID.4 is really an alternative vehicle. It has some good things about it for sure. Charging network is more important than people think and Tesla has the best period. Tesla has the best software and they constantly update it and provide now features for free. The range and performance is also better. The VW is a 🐌 in the EV world. I would never buy one. Enjoying the Model Y Performance and will be staying with Tesla for sure.

Mostly because charging at home for me is so inexpensive and convenient. I do have two EA chargers near me and I never use them.....other than for making a video or when I thought it was a great idea.
Essentially I was spending 30-40 minutes at a charging station to save $5. This was time I could have spent editing or creating videos for my other "real" channel, or doing my consultations. But I was just sitting there to save $5.....it was crazy.
For long road trips it's great, but that is about 1% of my driving.....if not less. So it comes with the purchase which is nice, but ultimately I think "they" know it's not going to cost them that much overall.
And don't get me started on availability and reliability of the EA network. It's pretty bad.

Only thing missing in your review...In the winter time id4 is 50% less effective and the fast charge takes 100% longer time. If you drive a lot in cold climate Tesla is the way to go. • @michaelcummins5974
      @michaelcummins5974 2 ปีที่แล้ว

They have not done that, at least not in the US. There were lots of articles in July and August about it happening by the end of this year, which in Elon language means, if you're lucky, they'll be open in 2025.
What they did recently do, is "offer" their plug as the standard for the country, ie all automakers can now opt to use the Tesla port instead of ccs on their cars. Zero have taken them up on it yet, but we'll see.
If you can't tell yet, I'm not a big fan of Tesla... But that said, if you're going to rely heavily on DC fast charging, you probably should get a Tesla. Otherwise, don't make any decisions based on theoretical access to the supercharger network. You might have another new car by the time that happens, if ever.

Nice discussion. I think you were pretty accurate on all points. The ID4 was really smooth on my test drives and the interior, while not luxurious, was quality and interesting. If you’ve seen one Tesla Model 3/Y interior, you’ve seen them all. How do you like the ID4’s acceleration compared to the Highlander or Lexus?

Seats are very comfortable. Luxurious....not at all, but certainly not base either. The acceleration is excellent compared to any gas powered vehicle I've owned. Had a BMW 3 series that was pretty quick, but was much lighter.
Improvements in cargo space, user interface, and range would make me consider buying another ID4.
Zags should have moved long ago. Only competition has been St. Marys. Now BYU and USF are starting to be tough. High school programs can beat Portland. Same with Pacific. Doesn't help that my Senior prom was held on the Pacific basketball court....make them feel like a high school program too!

So it's really not as much difference as it seems on paper. But for daily drive, it's a lot more comfortable. Highlander is definitely no game comparing to the AWD. Getting rid of ID4. I had always been a fan of Germans, until I bought this shame of German car making. Germany has winter, but it is somehow not prepared for winter AT ALL:
    1) we put winter tires from official dealership (Michelin tires mind you), and Anti-slip system started to engage whenever I am trying to accelerate. I WAS ALMOST HIT BY A TRUCK WHEN MERGING to a highway - the car DID NOT ACCELERATE!!!!! THIS IS INSANE!!! the dealership was trying to "dial in" some settings, they invited a VW rep - NO CHANGE. I ended up swapping my tires back to mid season.
    2) and now, after the "dialing in" experiment the range at 100% battery load shows 210 miles. I brought it back to the dealership - they can do nothing about it.
    3) no heat pump - goodbye range in the winter
    4) charging is slow - max charging speed I saw when charging was 65 - 70 kW
    5) finding a decent charger is a good luck experience - you have to drive off the highway and there is no guarantee there'll be an available stall that works... AWFUL. We are driving between Boston and NY often - a couple of times we merely made it back home even with a pit stop to recharge...
Result: I AM PICKING UP MY TESLA Y this Thursday. ID4 has been such a waste of money. We paid 36K+ for a certified used ID4 a year ago and now trading in for 20K (VW offers me 19K and tries to sell a newer ID 4 - guess my reaction). DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY, IT IS A PIECE OF JUNK!
And the best part: Model Y AWD long range is less expensive now... Sorry VW...

The lack of a speedo is a game changer, having the speed on the laptop is dangerous in my opinion, and so is the lack of a dealer/service network especially as cars get older. Eventually, if Tesla gets away with having no dealer network all the other car manufacturers will follow, it's a no-brainer, then they take all the profit and can scrap the dealer network and replace it with a Ranger service, and a few service centres around the country .
If that happens when you have a problem they won't know who you are, you will have to schedule an appointment online and wait, and there will be no personal rapport or relationship with someone who you know locally like it is now with say Ford.

Don't feel comfortable enough with the MY to make a statement, but ID4 without AC is about 150-170. With AC is about 20 miles less. It states 200 miles at 80%
I can say the MY is significantly less though. A trip to a specific baseball complex 70 miles from my home round trip I was nervous as hell I wouldn't have enough to get back home with AC on. In the MY I was doing 80mph and arrived back home with 160 miles range to spare. That was charged to 90% though...but still clearly better in terms of range and efficiency. (note the accurate range estimate with stated range being 296 at 90% charge.)
ID4 is beautiful inside and out. I'd buy another one, but would wait several years for range, cargo, and user interface improvements. Neighbor has Mach E. I'm not impressed at all personally.

Interesting comparison. I don’t own an EV and it’s unlikely I will until I feel comfortable with the charging network. I currently drive an E-Class Mercedes but their new EQS looks interesting until you checkout their charging network. It is rather anemic compared to Tesla’s. I felt the same way until recently but the Tesla's charging network is now pretty mature. The pass in LA just washed out and had to take a 4 hour detour through the snow and ice of Mojave but I was never more than 30 miles from a supercharger even in the high dessert. Not just one there were 8-16 at each location and the network keeps expanding. Also the build quality has improved greatly. Obviously look over the new vehicle completely as with any new car but tesla will fix any small issues often right there on the spot.
