In this video I am doing a quick review of my 2022 Rivian R1T, which was the first electric pickup truck on the market. This isn’t an EV deep-dive, instead I want to callout the highlights and some suggestions for Rivian. I sold my 2022 Tesla Model S for this electric truck and there are some comparisons between these two electric vehicles I’d like to make.
I am very pleased with the build quality and cabin materials used inside the R1T. It’s more like a luxury truck or SUV than a work truck in my opinion. It offers a slew of safety features including a 360-degree camera, blind spot monitoring, and gear guard which monitors your vehicle like Tesla’s sentry mode.
Some things, such as the software and tonneau cover can be improved. I’d like to see Rivian use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto inside these vehicles, but the touchscreen itself is very responsive and usable. I haven’t had a chance to take an EV road trip in the Rivian R1T yet, but it is on my list of videos so be sure to stay tuned and subscribe to the channel!

    Why doesnt VW just hire a professional computer engineer instead of doing their own software management. Or maybe give infortainment to apple or google to manage? Some cars like polestar, volvo and cadillac have google built in

    I generally change OE tires out from the start. We may put these CrossCimates on since we get full-on winters here.

      @evhelphub 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      They've been great tires. I plan to put them on all four wheels once the front tires wear out again. It looks like they will easily last 35-45k miles or so on the back of our RWD ID4. Very happy with the purchase.

    I was thinking about getting this car and I wanted to ask on here if it was sustainable to only have a level 1 charger for this car and make it work. I would charge it overnight. I would need to get a 240 volt outlet installed to use the level 2 and there seems to be some problems with doing it in my house. Is it possible to only have a level 1 charger and still make it work with this car? Is a level 1 as simple as plugging it into a regular outlet? Finally, does your electric bill go through the roof if you do that? Thank you!

    • @evhelphub
      @evhelphub 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Absolutely, we use the Level 1 charger 95%+ of the time and our ID4 is a daily commuter that travels 40 miles round trip. Level 1 is perfect most of the time, with the only real need for us to use our Level 2 is during winter months when efficiency drops (but still not required at all). Our electric bill is basically unchanged. We pay $0.10/kWh which means our weekly commute of 200 miles costs around $5.00 - $6.00. Yes, for Level 1 charging, all you need to do is plug into a regular wall outlet using the cable provided. Here's some resources from my website that might help further: evhelphub.com/charging/do-you-need-ev-home-charging-station/ evhelphub.com/articles/vw-id4-faq/ LMK if you have any other questions. I hope this was helpful!

      @@evhelphub thanks so much for the help! How do you find the storage in the car? The Tesla model Y seems to have more storage space than the VW. I’m going to get coming from a VW Atlas so both are small by comparison to that. I’m debating between the i4 and model Y. Based on my research Tesla seems more reliable when it comes to charging and has more space

    • @evhelphub
      @evhelphub 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I've owned a Model Y as well. Here’s how I would break it down: *The Model Y* has access to the Supercharger network, which is a significant advantage if you plan to road trip a lot (the ID4 will gain access to most Superchargers next year via an adapter though). It includes a heat pump that can improve winter efficiency, and its software is much more advanced. It also has one-pedal driving, although you can't turn off regenerative braking like you can on the ID4. However, the build/material quality of the Model Y is nowhere near as good as the ID4 and some features, like auto high beams and auto wipers, don't work well at all. It lacks basic features such as rear cross-traffic alert and rear automatic emergency braking. *The ID4* is much better built, with no rattles or panel misalignments, which were issues I experienced day 1 with my Model Y. The interior materials are definitely more durable and don't show signs of wear as quickly as my Teslas did. We carry lumber and supplies in the ID4, no problem. Cargo is perfectly fine. Though the Model Y is marketed to have more range, I'd say the newer ID4's 291 miles is probably about equal to the Model Y's 320 miles in the real-world, Tesla plays with their range numbers more. One big thing to note is that the ID4's software is pretty bad and not close Tesla's. Lots of bugs and laggy responsiveness. *Here's my recommendation:* If you frequently drive in rural areas or take more than a couple of extended road trips a year, the Model Y is a better choice for the supercharging network access alone. If you want a solidly built vehicle that you primarily charge at home and use as a comfortable commuter to work, the ID4 is better and will have less quality issues. I hope this helps!

      @@evhelphub thank you so much for the insight! I am lucky to where I live close to work and my son’s school so I can average as little as 25-30 miles a day. I’m pretty over on my miles for my VW lease, which they said they would forgive if I got another car from them so I might have no choice but to get the i4. My biggest concern is the trunk space. It looks like it can barely fit my hockey bag or be able to do a family Costco haul

    Can I get your opinion on whether I should be seriously interested in a AWD 2021 ID4 CarMax is offering for $28K? From what I read the 2024 version has solved many of the quirks however I can't afford that route. Is it still a great car to buy minus rebates, free charging, etc? Hope you'll reply soon.

    • @evhelphub
      @evhelphub 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes. My 2021 has been flawless in terms of reliability and build quality. It has not been to the dealership for service for any reason other than a couple of recalls and a software update. The only downside of a 2021 is the software, which I'm not sure is all that better on the newer models. Plus with CarMax you'll get 7 days to drive it around to make sure everything is in working order. I'd say go for it!

    Have had ours for a year. An absolute joy to use. I've come to appreciate the haptic buttons on the steering wheel. Their main advantage is swiping. You don’t need to look down or fidget when you swipe. Simplicity. It took me by surprise when I realized how swiping adjusts ACC cruising speed or sound volume or skips songs. You just swipe your thumbs across the middle of those panels , effortless - no need to look down or find the right buttons. It’s a pity those buttons are misunderstood. Coupled with AR-HUD, I never need to take my eyes off the road.

    I see every one concentrating on "lines aligment". Check the doors inside. Lower part especially. Looks cheap asf. Also the rubber band on the back doors. That also looks not 70K worth it. I have also an Audi A3 that costs half the price of my Tesla Model Y. In comparison the Tesla looks like a cheap toy car. When I close the Audi doors it sounds full, deep and robust . When I close the Tesla it sounds flimsy and thin. Open the front trunk (i.e. the "frunk"). Tell me if that panel belongs to a 70K worth car. As you're already there, check the air filter. That is the cheapest plastic I've ever seen in a car in my entire life. Not even Pejeout does that. In the future I think I'll stick to Audi or VW. What a disappointment.

    Perhaps driving at 62mph would have reduced the deop dramatically. Maybe by half? Assuming 62mph would work for you. My Enyaq 2023 has the same battery and I find this helps alot over here in the cold UK. Also manual braking regeneration using the paddles helps lift the miles per kwh significantly.

      Total capacity is 82kWh. 240 miles/386km EPA estimated range. About a 30% loss. Not too bad, especially since it doesn't have a heat pump. However, the battery was warm thanks to DC fast charging to 100% prior to my travel.

      Not too bad, a 30% drop from its EPA rated range. It doesn't have a heat pump but the battery was warmed up thanks to my DC fast charging session prior to the trip. However, 170 miles is a bit tight for those with longer winters and that travel in the cold. I would like to see VW get closer to 225 winter miles with a larger pack and heat pump in the future.
