      @jamstonjulian6947 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      And do any of those bands sound any anything like The Who? Johnny Marr's favourite guitarist is Bert Jansch, does that mean Pentangle influenced The Smiths?
      Oasis are clearly far more influenced by The Beatles, Stone Roses and T-Rex. Rush were far more influenced by Led Zeppelin and Yes.
      I have no doubt many bands love The Who and were inspired by their music, that does not make them influential per se, certainly not as much as bands like Sabbath, Zep, Beatles, Stones or Pink Floyd.

      I think that's because it is closer to our own tastes nowadays. Sgt. Peppers was really 'new' when it came out. Psychedelia, though, got stale in a few years and now sounds quite dated. The kind of what we now call 'britpop', still sounds fresh as there are many bands who still play it to this day. Sgt Pepper is a really good album though, in retrospect. Any album with songs like Lucy in the sky or A day in the life, is a masterpiece. Could have been better with it's only a northern song, maybe.

    • @Innerspace100
      @Innerspace100 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Fair point, that. But, it was Pepper that was the game changer, really. Before Pepper, it was all about the hit single. An LP was just a collection of the artists/groups hits with some b- sides and fillers thrown in, basically. Pepper changed all that, and is thus the logical choice for such a list IMO. Plus, I think it's a damned good LP (maybe not Lovely Rita, but...), perhaps even a tad better than Revolver. As an LP, I mean. Not certain individual songs, neccesarily.

      I too would have expected to see Tommy. Concept albums were around before Tommy but the success of the rock opera made concept albums chic. If the purpose of the list is to cite British albums that changed rock, London Calling is hugely important. There's a reason people in the late 70's called the Clash the only band that mattered.

    The Brits released so many influential albums. In the comments, I've seen London Calling by the Clash, King Crimson's In the Court of the Crimson King and Deep Purple in Rock. I was also baffled that the highly influential rock opera/concept album Tommy by the Who wasn't there. And why choose Dire Straits' Making Movies over Brothers in Arms, which launched the compact disc era and arguably features some of Dire Straits' biggest hits (Money for Nothing, Walk of Life, So Far Away and the title track)? You could also have listed at least one record by the Kinks: Something Else, The Village Green Preservation Society or Arthur. Furthermore, the debut album by the Police, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John, Days of Future Passed by the Moody Blues and any 1980s album by the Cure (goth rock!)... So many to choose from. And I haven't even mentioned Genesis, Yes, Judas Priest, Eurythmics or Depeche Mode yet.

      I wouldn't even label radiohead a rock band anymore . They have gone beyond that . All their albums since ok computer are very much jazz influenced . Johnny Greenwood has said after the bends whole band listened to miles davis and since then have been trying to incorporate his sound in to their own songs.
      Also i find it amazing how the beatles fans always laud lennon and mccartney as musical genius's when all their early stuff was extremely simple guitar based music .
      Their later music was more complex but that was down to their producer george martin who was very well versed in musical theory. Lennon and McCartney couldn't even read music.

      Well, I don't think ok computer really changed music, or that it was revolutionary, maybe it was the staple album of the 90's but it wasn't an album that was written in history for being revolutionary. but yeah I agree In the court of the crimson king should definitely be on that list, and instead of freaking oasis.

      @@seanpanigel5494 It's hard for me to comment on, since I'm not knowledgeable enough, not having listened to enough music enough times over enough time (on top of which the list is not overtly about what music you like best)-I'm only acknowledging the apparent consensus (among western men aged 20-60), in the case of "OK Computer".
      I guess that "Loveless" doesn't qualify. I like that one a lot more than "OK Computer" so far (although I do find it somewhat overrated; while the sound really carries the album, the songwriting is a little lacking, compared to my absolute favorites). It also seems more groundbreaking than the Radiohead album, based on my limited understanding of the topic.
