I was lucky enough to join the Bristol Police (Anon and Somerset Constabulary UK) in 1975 and in 1976 the Rolling Stones came to the Ashton Gate stadium to do a concert and I was on duty posted behind the band on the stage. It was mind blowing. I now live across the Mersey from Liverpool, home to our amazing and much loved Beatles, and by chance my 'O' Level school exam at 16 for art was partly to do a painting based on Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds! Nobody could argue that all the albums on this list were hugely influential. Nevertheless, if we're listing the albums which made huge novel strides and are claimed by many other bands to have influenced their sound the most, surely 10cc's eponimous first album, Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, and Supertramp's Breakfast in America should each be mentioned. Of the Beatles albums, I suggest that The White Album broke more new ground than any other from the Fab Four.

Don't know about 10cc's first, although I do remember a couple of singles off of it. Personally it was 'Sheet Music' for me but if any were influential, surely it would have been 'The original soundtrack'? Because we are such a small island musicians were and are constantly crossing paths with each other, so there is a constant mixing of talent. If you can have solo artists like David Bowie, then I would argue that Kate Bush's Hounds of Love was massively influential to a lot of the alternate acts that started out in the late eighties and early nineties. Oasis were extremely popular but I've not really heard many songwriters stating that they were a major influence on their work. So if influence is the measuring stick, I'm not convinced Oasis should make the list.

The rock acts that are billed as a solo artist are a mixed bag. Some have a steady lineup and even have songwriting credits on the albums, others bring various people on from time to time. Stevie Ray Vaughn got his first big exposure on Bowie's Let's Dance, but wasn't a steady part of his lineup. But the steady ones should qualify like bands.

Progressive bands like Pink Floyd, their albums are a journey according to the setting of the tracks from start to finish. There's a number of bands that came after Floyd that does this such as Nine Inch Nails and Tool. As for the double guitars, I can see the practicality of them as instrument tuning can change from song to song and for Zeppelin to use one for their Stairway to heaven. They would have to have breaks in the song for the guitarist to swap guitars.

Hawkwind have played so many gigs in their time I wouldn't be to surprised, I myself have seen them play many times, the very first time I saw them was as a young teenager in the early eighties at the Leas cliff hall in Folkestone Kent, it was part of their Choose your masks tour, mind blown loved them ever since. Thank you for your reply, all the very best, 👍👊✌️🇬🇧🌍.

Hello Anna and JT. Those Beatles songs played on here always remind me of George Formby. You should look him up. The Beatles were actually fans of his and his films are a good snapshot of UK culture from yesteryear.
See also Stone Roses. They were huge in UK when US went off on a Grunge tangent. You must also have heard music from The Jam, Madness, New Order and Massive Attack?
For something different see Be Bop Deluxe music which is so seventies UK and a local band to me. Also Dance music here was huge, not killed off by anti disco riots like in US.

The main reason Brit pop made such an impact in the US is because of video in the 80s. Back when music made its way over to video format it became immensely popular all over the western world and at the fore front of that in the US was MTV. In Britain we already had a head start with music videos thanks largely to a show called Top of the Pops and when MTV rolled out there were hardly any US bands with music videos and all of the most popular stuff on MTV was Brit pop. At one point 9/10 of the top songs in the US were by British bands which is testiment to how much a music video sold an artists work.

Iron Maiden? Brilliant but, did any of their albums change music forever? Probably not as they were just a later part of that new wave of British Heavy metal as band like Judas Priest were earlier and were of the same genre. With The Animals, you're right. At least with the early stuff, much was re-arranged American Blues bought to the masses.
