Marillion came when Progressive Rock was a thing from the past. It was the second wave. I remember at the time veryone said “Marillion ? they sound like Genesis. It was like nostalgia 😂”.
Yeah, Marillion definitely brought that prog revival in the 80s, right? Everyone kept saying they were "Genesis 2.0," giving off that nostalgic vibe 😂. But they added their own flavor and made a mark in the second wave of prog!
Very well done! An exaustive and quite coherent list! My only points: personally I would place Genesis (only Gabriel era) a bit higher and Rush some place down , moreover I would "switched" Procol Harum for Marillion and Focus for Los Jaivas🙂
Thanks for the compliment! Your suggestion to adjust the position of Genesis and Rush makes sense, as well as the proposed swaps. With so many great bands, there's always room for different interpretations! 😊

I agree, Uriah Heep has a huge influence on music, blending progressive rock with hard rock and metal elements. They really paved the way for many bands that came after! Do you have a favorite song from them?

You're welcome! 😊 The holy trinity of Italian Progressive Rock. Le Orme, BMS and PFM have made significant contributions to the prog scene. What are your favorite albums by these bands?
I see your point! Just a reminder, this list focuses on the most influential bands, not necessarily the best. Influence includes shaping the sound of other bands and inspiring people to explore progressive rock. Which band do you think had the most impact on the genre? Thanks for commenting!
@@borsop1 I understand what you're saying my friend. I actually think that Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson themselves would say that Yes was more influential. The problem is that Rush is my favorite band and, one could argue, that Rush is a much harder rocking band that is very close to metal. I like Yes and Genesis a lot, but Rush rocks harder and has more interesting lyrics. In short, I'm just a Rush fanboy.🤪
I understand your point! The order of bands can spark debates, and many people have different opinions on who should be at the top. The list reflects a perspective, but it's great to hear different opinions on these prog giants. Thanks for commenting!

KEITH EMERSON that's who ! Yes also were influenced by Keith Emerson and the Nice..... You need to of seen them in the 70s to make a list like this, Cheers !
Your list is impressive and full of great prog rock names! ELP and Yes truly made their mark with their intensity, and seeing those giants live in the '70s must have been an incredible experience. Keith Emerson was definitely a major influence on many bands, including Genesis and Yes. It's always fascinating to see how these influences intertwine in the genre. Thanks for your comment!
Great list! I think the order might shift a bit, especially considering Genesis’ influence during the Peter Gabriel era and the impact of King Crimson and Yes. Manfred Mann’s Earth Band is a pretty interesting choice too, not so common in prog lists. Thanks for commenting!
You missed out Barclay James Harvest, they were the first to play and did in front of 80,000 People for free in Berlin after the Wall came down. A Concert For The People. Porcupine Tree are in the Neo Prog. Category, 1990s+. Prog. is 1970s+ [I got a Fuzz Guitar, Oh my goodness gracious]

I see your point. Rankings can vary a lot depending on individual perspectives. Rush has a large fan base, but might not be everyone's top choice. What would your ideal order for prog rock bands be? Thanks for the comment!
Well, the title was "..most INFLUENTAL..." (not "biggest fanbase"). With that, there is essentially two criteria tha should go into the ranking: - Bands/artists that were essential for the forming of the genre in the late 1960s, and - Bands that later contributed to a MAJOR change or evolution of the genre. Much as I have big respect for Rush, they do not qualify high wrt any of those. In no particular order, 6 out of the top 10 must include: King Crimson, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Yes, Genesis. All of them definitively rank higher than Rush. Debatable absentees: Frank Zappa, Focus. Appreciated absentees: Kansas. Sorry, all 'Merkans. You created blues, country and good old rock'n'roll, and the evoled that into a multitude of lovely genres. Everything rock/pop stands on the shoulders of that! But prog rock is essentially a Europeean thing..

I saw ELP at the August Jam 1974. We were very high and I saw them promoting Brain Salad Surgery. He did elevate the keyboard and turn in around. They concluded with the wings sprouting out. For years no one believed me..
Wow, seeing ELP at the August Jam in 1974 must have been an incredible experience! The "Brain Salad Surgery" show with the elevated keyboard and wings is truly iconic. It’s always interesting to hear these memorable concert stories. Thanks for sharing!
VDGG is an excellent choice! Indeed, German and French bands also have a significant impact on progressive rock. I think you gave me a good idea, creating a list just with bands from outside the UK. If you have a few more names it would help even more. Thanks for commenting!
Genesis, PFM, GENTLE GIANT, YES, JETHRO TULL, YES, the WHO, LED Zeppelin, Van der Graff, Pink Floyd, WISHBONE ASH, king crimson, Deep purple ,Marillion, ELP,
I really liked this selection, very complete! Some bands are debatable in the progressive context, like Led Zeppelin, but arguments can go both ways. Who do you think is the most controversial as a prog band?
Die ersten drei Alben (Supertramp, Indelibly Stamped, Crime Of The Century) sind Prog in Reinkultur.

Focus belong in the top 10! not sure Rush are a proper prog rock band. they sure have some elements of it in their music but to me they are a straight ahead rock band. also Moody Blues as much as i love them (one of my all time favourite bands) are psychedelic rock that is definately a different sub genre. otherwise most important ones have been covered
I get that you think Focus deserves to be in the top 10, but lists are always a matter of personal taste. As for Rush, even if you see them as more of a straight-ahead rock band, a lot of people consider their work, especially with Neil Peart, to have significant progressive elements. And while the Moody Blues are known for a more psychedelic sound, they also have some prog elements in their music. Progressive rock is a pretty flexible genre, and opinions can vary. Thanks for commenting!
That's a valid opinion, especially considering the unique impact each of these bands had on progressive rock. Genesis really set many of the genre's standards, as did Jethro Tull and Pink Floyd. Thanks for commenting!
I would put Pink Floyd, then Jethro Tull, Yes, Rush, Marillion. I like Genesis, but it is overrated for me. What about Asia, Toto or Foreigner? I also did not see any prog metal bands on your list, is it because you see it as another category?
For Me I Love 1.Yes 2.Rush 3.Pink Floyd 4.Genesis 5.ELP 6.Marillion 7.Supertramp 8.The Moody Blues 9.Barcley James Harvest 10.Moon Safari (Swedish Band)
Great choice! Jethro Tull and King Crimson are true icons of progressive rock, each bringing their unique approach to the genre. Frank Zappa, on the other hand, is a legend who blended rock with jazz, classical music, and a lot of humor. Thanks for commenting!
Cool you mentioned those bands! Each one has its own value and contributions to prog. It's a difficult list to make, there will always be someone left out, but we included Gentle Giant, did you see? Thanks for commenting!

Thanks for the comment! These bands really helped shape prog rock and are still references today. You can't talk about prog without mentioning this group!
I would add Curved Air. They were at it very early and were absolutely progressive. I consider them far more progressive than psychedelic. As with all these lists--order is always up for debate. Thanks for including Renaissance.
Curved Air is an amazing addition! They really brought something unique with their mix of rock and classical elements. And Renaissance is a band that deserves recognition! What's your favorite album from them?
Very nice video, however, I believe we can't place artists on a scale. It's not athletics you know, where the factual measure of time and speed sets the places on a podium. But yeah, I really appreciated this presentation of progressive rock as a genre, as an artistic movement, because it really is. Thanks man 👌🏽✨
Thanks a lot for the comment! I agree, you can't measure art like a competition. But it's always interesting to see how everyone interprets and feels music differently. Thanks for commenting!
Pink Floyd which I love and listen almost every day is one of the first British psychedelic groups. They slowly departured from it through the period of "space rock" and became somehow progressive rock band after releasing "Ummagumma" (November 1969) and "Atom Heart Mother" (October 1970 ). With all due respect for Pink Floyd , position number 1 belongs to King Crimson because their album "In The Court Of The Crimson King" ( October 1969) is one of the most influential of the progressive rock genre. It is regarded as first mature and the greatest progressive rock albums of all time. Rush ( number 2 on your list above Yes and King Crimson ) moved towards progressive rock after Neil Peart joined the band on July 29, 1974 . Drummer Neil Peart credited the adventurous and innovative style of Michael Giles (drummer of King Crimson) as an influence on his own approach to percussion. Rush was also influenced by Yes ( influenced by King Crimson), Pink Floyd , Jethro Tull and Genesis (P.Gabriel and S.Hackett era). King Crimson not only influenced prog rock but for much wider spectrum of contemporary music beyond general rock genre. Thus , your inconsistent list reflects only your taste of music and is far cry from reality. Anyway , I am not a fan of contestation in music. Music is diversified as much as minds of human beings. Everybody has the right to his/her choice of music creation or admiration . My advise is: Please avoid any pretentious titles. Thus , to be honest ,the proper title your presentation should read : The 20 Most Influential Progressive Rock Bands According to Me .
Thank you for your detailed comment! It's clear that you've given a lot of thought to the history and impact of these bands. The list is subjective and reflects a perspective on the most influential bands in progressive rock as a whole, not only focusing on the musical influence exerted on other bands, but also the power to influence people to begin to appreciate progressive rock. Your points about King Crimson and Rush add valuable context to the discussion. As you mentioned, music is deeply personal, and everyone's experience and taste shape their opinions.

Nice list! This Top 5 really nails it with the prog giants. Pink Floyd and King Crimson tied for third is an interesting choice - what made you go for that tie?
I know all the bands on your list (except the first one) and I saw many of them live even more than once. Thanks for including Italian bands too. Greetings from Rome
How cool that you know so many bands from the list! Los Jaivas is an amazing Chilean band that mixes rock with traditional Andean music, definitely worth checking out. And Italian bands have a special place in prog. Thanks for commenting!
Glad you enjoyed the Italian and Chilean bands! It's always worth broadening horizons in prog rock, right? I'm happy you discovered new sounds. Thanks for commenting!
King Crimson definitely has a strong claim for the top spot, especially for their pioneering role in prog rock. The other bands you mentioned also have their unique place in the genre. Thanks for sharing your ranking!
Hey, I get it! Rush is fantastic, but there’s always debate when it comes to rankings. Your list makes a lot of sense, though I'd personally struggle putting King Crimson below 6 or 7! What made you decide to place Rush after those legends?
@@BackingTrackCenter I just feel that Rush music actually wanders away from progressive style more frequently than the others. More rock and hard rock and blues (early on). I still love them (seen them 8 times lol), but to me nothing says progressive rock like Yes and ELP. Maybe I’m a sucker for the great keyboard play…
It seems to me that the author confused the concepts of “influential” and “best”. I think the most influential are King Crimson, ELP, Soft Machine, Yes, Genesis. they influenced subsequent generations of musicians, even from non-progressive scenes, such as New Wave. The rest are just great bands. Who were your influences, for example, Reinessance or Moody Blues, or Jethro Tull which I love very much? In principle, no one. These are diamonds that sparkle on their own.
You're right about the influence of those bands, but the list really focuses on the most influential, which aren't necessarily the "best." The idea is to highlight those that influenced the sound of other bands as well as those that inspired people to enter the world of progressive rock. Thanks for commenting!
You got it wrong.....the best undesputed prog album was close to the edge by YES. They take top spot , they practically invented the genre....just because pink Floyd sold more albums, doesn't make them top dogs. A single member of Genesis or Yes , has more musical ability than the entire Floyd put together.
I certainly understand your point of view, but the idea behind this list was to talk about "influence" in the broadest sense of the word, not only among musicians, but in relation to people in general. PF and Rush, for example, were the gateway for many people to get to know KC, GG, Genesis, etc. But they are not necessarily better. Thanks for your comment!
@@BackingTrackCenter Some of my favorities: Steeleye Span, "Parcel of Rogues". Horslips, "Drive the Cold Winter Away". Trader Horn, "Morning Way" Hedgehog Pie, "The Green Lady"

@@BackingTrackCenter Okay, anytime. Actually all first six Horslips albums are great! Have you heard Joanna Newsom? I believe she is genius of our time...
What about Rare Bird, Gryphon and Kansas? In Germany many interesting prog rock bands stream. Yes and King Crimson defined prog rock from their first albums, while Pink Floyd delved into experiments and searches.
Great point! Rare Bird, Gryphon, and Kansas are indeed influential in prog rock. And yes, many German prog rock bands have made significant contributions. I agree that Yes and King Crimson were foundational, while Pink Floyd explored different directions. Thanks for the comment!
Rare Bird were such a great band, I’m so glad you pointed them out!! I don’t know if they were « that » influencial as they never really got the recognition they deserved (except for Sympathy ofc) but the association of two fantastic keyboardist and the powerful and sensational voice of Steve Gould truly was something
It's a good list but I wish it had been extended to a "top 30" to include bands like: Henry Cow, Greenslade, Hatfield and the North, National Health, Matching Mole, Gryphon, UK, Aphrodite's Child, etc
Great list! Each of these bands brought something unique to progressive rock, especially Renaissance and Camel with their sophisticated melodies. Thanks for commenting!
Nice to see some progressive bands other than the usual Brits in your list. I do however confess to having nailed the same top four as you. I’d have put Genesis and Tull higher and it’s also good to see Camel scoring well ~ they never seem to get the credit they truly deserve. As for other names? I’ll throw Wobbler into the mix.
Glad you liked the diverse mix in the list! It’s great to hear that our top four align with yours. Genesis and Jethro Tull definitely have a strong case for higher placements, and Camel’s unique sound deserves more recognition. Wobbler is an excellent suggestion! They bring a fresh take on the genre. Do you have a favorite album or track from Wobbler that you think exemplifies their style?
@@BackingTrackCenter My professional musician stepson pointed me at Wobbler. I appreciate their use of period specific instruments pre-1975 especially keyboards. 2011’s Rites at Dawn is certainly very good and although I’ve yet to listen to it, 2017’s ‘From Silence To Somewhere’ was very well received and holds top rated album of the 21st century thus far in the Prog Archives database which is pretty impressive considering absolute gems like Rush’s magnificent swan song Clockwork Angels exists.
Yes & Tull did it for me growing up. Genesis & Crimson behind them. Never got into Rush or Floyd (except Animals). Great list, highlighted some bands not too familiar with, but sound great in the snippets.

20 are too few. One very influential in Magma, who started a completely new genre and has a number of follower artists worldwide. Dream Theather started the whole Progressive-Metal subgenre but has some predecessors in Uriah Heep and Deep Purple. Some Eastern Europe artists deserve a mention: After Crying, Collegium Musicum. I would have inclueded also Kansas and the Canadian Harmonium. From the North, Samla Mammas Manna and Pekka Pohjola. The German Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Ash Ra. But most of all, influential to all those who record at home: Mike Oldfield.
"Days of Future Passed" is indeed a classic and often hailed as one of the pioneering albums of progressive rock. Its blend of orchestral arrangements with rock elements set the stage for many prog bands that followed. Thanks for commenting!
These lists invite alternative suggestions. Somewhere here should be the Hungarian band After Crying, King-Crimson-ish but much more neo classical orchestration and jazz virtuosity. Go find them.
After Crying really does have that King Crimson vibe mixed with a more neoclassical and jazz feel. Great suggestion for those who enjoy more complex prog sounds!

Prog era Marillion was just a Genesis clone. Imo that band doesn't belong to this list because they were already "highly" influenced by Genesis. Other selections are good. Congrats.
I understand your point! Marillion was indeed heavily influenced by Genesis, but they still made their mark on the neo-prog movement. Influence doesn't lessen their impact, but I agree it’s a point for debate. Which band would you place in their spot? Thanks for commenting!
@@BackingTrackCenter i'd place Ange in their spot. Unique band from 70's France or Maneige from Quebec. There are thousands of bands from 1967-1982 era that deserve that spot. For me neo-prog is a worthless genre i don't care about a genre that built its whole character on one spesific band's five year period :) but if you really want to place a neo-prog band you can place twelfth night with their 1982 album at least they had their own identity and character.
@@BackingTrackCenter Tangerine Dream (even if initially influenced by Brit psychedelia), Magma for Zeuhl, Art Zoyd for Chamber Rock, two genres that didn't exist before them.
Sure, they were influenced by Genesis and Gabriel. But have you seen some of Fish's influences? Van der Graaf Generator, Moodies, Bowie. With Hogarth, they remind me more of Floyd with an odd-sounding lead singer. 🤣
No worries! It's totally fine to have different tastes. Pink Floyd's commercial success is undeniable, but what resonates with one person might not with another. What's a band or album you find most interesting in prog rock?
King Crimson though not a fan of their 80s albums, early Genesis and Steve Hackett, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Yes, Renaissance, Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull, Family, U.K. Among less known Comus, Rare Bird, Gravy Train, Curved Air.

Second place for Rush is just ridiculous
I see your point. Rankings can vary a lot depending on individual perspectives. Rush has a large fan base, but might not be everyone's top choice. What would your ideal order for prog rock bands be? Thanks for the comment!
Well, the title was "..most INFLUENTAL..." (not "biggest fanbase"). With that, there is essentially two criteria tha should go into the ranking:
- Bands/artists that were essential for the forming of the genre in the late 1960s, and
- Bands that later contributed to a MAJOR change or evolution of the genre.
Much as I have big respect for Rush, they do not qualify high wrt any of those.
In no particular order, 6 out of the top 10 must include:
King Crimson, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Yes, Genesis.

I get that you think Focus deserves to be in the top 10, but lists are always a matter of personal taste. As for Rush, even if you see them as more of a straight-ahead rock band, a lot of people consider their work, especially with Neil Peart, to have significant progressive elements.

Pink floyd and Jethro tull both are number one

That's a good suggestion! A "top 30" would definitely make room for more of these amazing bands. Thanks for the comment!
Steve Hillage
1. Renaissence
2. Camel
3. Traffic
4. Genesis
5. Yes
Maybe not the most influencial, but I'd like to see some mention of Pavlov's Dog.
Pavlov's Dog definitely has a unique sound! Maybe not the most influential, but they’ve got quality. Thanks for commenting!
Yes & Tull did it for me growing up. Genesis & Crimson behind them. Never got into Rush or Floyd (except Animals). Great list, highlighted some bands not too familiar with, but sound great in the snippets.
Thanks for the comment! Yes and Jethro Tull are real prog powerhouses, right? Genesis and King Crimson too, no doubt. About Rush and Floyd, it's that thing... personal taste always counts! But glad you enjoyed finding new bands from the video! 🎸
Nr. 1 King Crimson 2. Yes 3. Rush 4. Genesis /only Peter Gabriel 5. Van der graaf 6. Jethro Tull
Great list, man! King Crimson at the top is a classic choice, lots of people agree with that.
King Crimson, Right On! Hail To The King Baby! Hail To The King.
King Crimson is truly legendary! Hail to the King!
i miss german bands like Grobschnitt (solar music), Can, Embryo, Jane
Those German bands truly left a mark on prog. They could've easily made the list too. Thanks for commenting!
1.king crimson. 2. Van der graf. 3. Yes.4.genesis. 5. Jetrho tull. 6. Gentle giant. Etc. Etc
Le Orme!!!! Thanks for including them!!!!
Le Orme is amazing! They totally deserve a spot on the list. Thanks for commenting!
Your suggestions are undoubtedly incredible, we would need at least 100 spaces on the list to accommodate the best ones. Thanks for commenting!
Days of Future Passed is the Prog Rock Band album par excellence.
"Days of Future Passed" is indeed a classic and often hailed as one of the pioneering albums of progressive rock. Its blend of orchestral arrangements with rock elements set the stage for many prog bands that followed. Thanks for commenting!
Oui
These lists invite alternative suggestions. Somewhere here should be the Hungarian band After Crying, King-Crimson-ish but much more neo classical orchestration and jazz virtuosity. Go find them.
After Crying really does have that King Crimson vibe mixed with a more neoclassical and jazz feel. Great suggestion for those who enjoy more complex prog sounds!
@@BackingTrackCenterthey were admirers of Barclay James Harvest and the BJH bassist guested with them. I think that was John Lees
Ok, they might be not that influencial, but speaking of hungarian bands I like to mention Special Providence. Saw them live, they blew me away!
@@boredbynature thanks for the recommendation. I will go and find them👍
@ I’m two thirds of the way through their ‘Soul Alert’ album. Thank you so much for introducing me to them. Wonderful musicianship and full of melodic and rhythmical ideas👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Curved Air, Eloy, Nektar, Focus 👀
These are amazing bands! Each brought something unique to prog rock. Eloy and Nektar have that spacey vibe, while Focus and Curved Air have their own innovative blends. Thanks for commenting!
Rush #10 and King Crimson #1.
King Crimson at the top makes total sense for many prog fans, while Rush still deserves a lot of respect, even in a lower position. Everyone has their own ranking! Thanks for the comment!
1.Rush
2.Tool
3.Deep purple
Rush in the top 3 certainly has an impact on progressive rock! Tool and Deep Purple are also amazing bands, but do you think they fit more into prog or metal? Thanks for commenting!
Where are Porcupine Tree???
We recently featured Porcupine Tree on a Progressive Metal list, check it out: th-cam.com/video/bkzGhE7T1bc/w-d-xo.html.

In my opinion Yes #1, VDGG #2, ELP #3, Genesis #4 (only Gabriel era), Gentle Giant #6, Anglagard #7
Interesting ranking! Putting Yes at the top makes sense to many fans, and the order you chose reflects the impact these bands had on progressive rock. Everyone has their preferences, and it's great to see the diversity of opinions. Thanks for sharing!
1 Pink Floyd 2 YES 3 GENESIS !!!!!
C'est évident, bien sûr ! 👍
Jethro Tull #1
Jethro Tull at the top! They definitely deserve a lot of respect for the innovation they brought to prog with their unique blend of folk and rock.
AMÉM
Sure, they were influenced by Genesis and Gabriel. But have you seen some of Fish's influences? Van der Graaf Generator, Moodies, Bowie. With Hogarth, they remind me more of Floyd with an odd-sounding lead singer. 🤣
Pink Floyd the most commercially successful but least interesting for me. Sorry if you think otherwise. Just my opinion.
Pink Floyds music is lullabies for stoned people.
@user-qb1sm3rk9r ...and TH-cam comments are [blank] for [blank] people.lol
I really never considered Pink Floyd as being “Progressive Rock”. They are experimental sonically but they are primarily a rock band.
