It might help to consider that you're talking about a guy whose deep understanding and appreciation of music leads him to think the cover of "La Bamba" was done by a group call Las Lobos.

The Honeydripper's cover of Sea Of Love is one of the very rare covers to surpass the original in terms of beauty and delivery. Whoever did that string arrangement was a genius! And Robert Plant as a crooner? Why Percy be ashamed of it? It was so well done.
Funny thing is my mom despised Led Zeppelin, but she absolutely LOVED The Honeydrippers' Sea of Love. You should've seen the look on her face when I told her one half of Zep plays on that song (Page does the solo).

I was blown away by the list ! But gotta say that Los Lobos did so amazing with LA Bomba that even my Mom loved it,and she was heartbroken by his death with another 2 of her favorites and nearly cried when she 1st heard it !! 💔 ❤ Memories I'll forever cherish as I lost her at age 21.
I probably shouldve waited until the end of this episode to comment, but i also needed to say how awesome The Honeydrippers were! Their version of Sea of Love came out when I was going from jr high to highschool and I rank the summer of '84 as the apex of musical greatness for me. It seems to be chock full of the most iconic artists and songs and so much diversity of genres. We were really blessed to have been able to be a part of that generation.😊

Right?! I was 13 and I remember watching the video on MTV. I only knew a few Led Zeppelin songs and never really got into them until college. I had to have the Honeydrippers' version of Sea of Love played at my wedding. I love being born in the 70s, past the birth of rock and roll and the electric guitar and being able to grow up with the advent of new music and artists. I spent most of my allowance on records and cassettes.♥
RUN DMC's cover of "Walk This Way" bridged that very extreme gap between rock and rap instantly. The rap crowd loved RUN DMC and of course the rockers/metalheads considered Aerosmith to be one of the founding fathers of "real rock". I remember the rift in high school. Those two crowds never had anything to do with one another. Then the collab came out... rap fans and rock fans opened their eyes to one another's music styles. Almost overnight the rockers and rappers were sitting at the same lunch tables in the cafeteria and hanging out during "free period" (our school's version of study hall) sharing each others tunes, liking some of it, hating some of it, but uniting over "Walk This Way" and at least those two cliques merged without animosity for the rest of time. If you were too young or not even around when this happened, it was literally an awe-inspiring connection. That collaboration was the bridge that brought about peace between two rival groups while simultaneously exposing each group to the other's music. No longer were there the rockers and the rappers. They all jammed together. That cover unified a lot of people, removed differences and spawned a fresh energy among people you would never have previously thought would come eye-to-eye with one another. It was one of the last social rifts that needed closing and when it came, it was as if everyone was suddenly included together. The last dividing line between people, ethnicities, and culture just warped into one big "We're just people, man". Looking back, that song ended all rifts between people and it was as if black, white, Asian, you name it, we all just merged into one people. That song and collab is what broke the last remnants of racism (until some foolish people decided to rekindle that fading ember a decade ago... totally unbelievable that we had broken racism apart through connection over music and people not even alive when that happened decided life was too easy, so they had to force it to return just to have something to complain about).
One of my high school friends looked just like Darryl McDaniels. He graduated a year before me and went into the Marines and passed away way too young. Every time I hear this song I remember Dale; gone too soon.
You just described the ‘80s perfectly! I grew up in a 50/50 black/white town, so we shared music before the song. That kicked it into high gear, though!
I much prefer the original, which I have, and I do not have Run DMC's version, even though I like the band. Aerosmith just did a much better version of their song.
In the late 80's, my(soon to be) wife & I lived in an attic apartment above 3 college guys. Whenever they got a bit loud downstairs, we'd lay our stereo speakers face down on the floor & blast, 'Come on feel the noise.'😆
I had a 3rd floor apartment in the 70's while in college. Had a downstairs neighbor who was into Ham radio. Every time he keyed the mic it would feed through my stereo rig upstairs. Richie Valens looked 17 going on 35. My mother Donna loved sixties music and opened a nightclub called "Oh Donna's" with all 50's & 60's on the jukebox and pictures of the stars of that time on the walls. I got to know all those old songs that way lol

La Bamba, loved the soundtrack and the Movie. I remember being 13 yrs old and listening to that song with my friends and we danced and sang (even though we didn’t speak Spanish). Still to this day that song gets me moving and singing and always makes me smile
I was 14 and it was really one of the first music connections that my dad and I had. My father, of course, was a fan of Ritchie back in the 50s, as well as Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper, being a teenager himself then. Until the Los Lobos version hit, I looked at my dad's music like some sort of stone age relic. It changed my perspective just as I was discovering my own musical preferences.
Their influence in the U.K. is massive. Noel Gallagher cites them as one of the bands that shaped the sound of Oasis. Oasis does a great cover of "Cum On Feel The Noise". Noddy's mirror covered hat is on display at the British Music Experience Museum in Liverpool.
Slade, huge in the UK in the early to mid 70's... How Big? Likely rivaling the Beatles in singles sales Big. Then their career collapsed badly as punk and new wave took over while they were trying to crack the USA, on the edge of breaking up playing student unions around the country and losing the will to live as they were 2nd billing to the cheap beer, when they got a call to replace for Ozzy at the Reading festival (one of 2 big hard rock/metal festivals in the UK at the time) they went on expecting to bomb badly, the Audience was walking away when they walked on... then they nailed it so damn hard at the end of the set they had the largest crowd of the whole festival all screaming for "Merry Xmas Everyone" as an encore, on an August Bank Holliday weekend. Cue a significant career revival. If you are not familiar with Slade, treat your ears to "Wall of Hits"

Hall & Oates sang Every Time You Go Away in all the concerts I’ve seen of them and of course everyone in the crowd loved it. I love both versions but prefer the one by Hall & Oates.
The entire Honeydrippers record is outstanding.Every song takes one back to the 1950s.I searched for over 35 years for the record.I finally found it when Robert Plant released Nine Lives collection.The Sea of Love is my favorite song on your list.
I grew up a Simon and Garfunkel fan, and knew Hazy Shade of Winter was a good rocker. I tried to talk my HS garage band into playing it, but they all nixed the idea. Years later I was watching MTV and saw the Bangles version, and was amused at how similar their arrangement was to what I was trying to get my band to do.
Paul Simon has always been really cool with the covers. He actually texted the lead singer of Disturbed to OK their Sounds of Silence. Speaking of nostalgia those dudes are back on tour.
I just recently found that Disturbed version of the song. And although the song is played up a full tone song so David Draiman can sing it an octave lower than the Paul it's a damn good cover. There's a live version where Myles Kennedy of the band Atler Bridge sings the second vocal part. Unfortunately he's no Art Garfunkel.

My sister was a big Bengals fan. I’d didn’t really like their music and was kind of annoyed when she’d sing their songs while playing the piano. But as an adolescent boy, I gotta say, Susanna Hoffs was definitely eye candy that I couldn’t take my eyes off of. She has aged very well.
I recall reading The Bangles had to remove the reference to drinking Vodka & Lime due to Record Company not wanting to promote alcohol. They leave it in for live performances these days….. Less Than Zero arguably was Robert Downey Jr’s breakout performance and established him as a legitimate actor and not just a Teen Star.

Kim Wilde's version of You Keep Me Hanging On is better than the original. Imo. I like the urgency & more driving sound (for 80s pop) than the way The Supremes did it.

The Firm are quite possibly my favorite 2-album wonders... an early supergroup, with Jimmy Page, legendary Paul Rodgers, fretless bass player-extraordinaire Tony Franklin, & eventual Guns n Roses drummer Chris Slade. Even their lesser-known 2nd album, Mean Business was just outSTANDING.

Honeydrippers Volume I remains one of my favorite e.p.s ever. In addition to Jimmy Page and Jeff beck on guitar it had a song featuring Brian Setzer on guitar(who also played Eddie Cochran in La Bamba) and guest guitar spots from the great Nile Rodgers who was also a co-producer. Nile Rodgers is a musical alchemist and everything he touches is amazing.
Brian Setzer was the singer of the Stray Cats. Great rockabilly band from the eighties. Honeydrippers included Paul Schaefer from the David Letterman show on keyboards.
I love Faith no More singing Easy, originally by the Commodores. One of the best covers in my opinion. I know it was the in the 90s when the cover was made.

The album I wish would’ve been produced: Bangles doing an entire album of 60s covers of THEIR choice. Every member truly gets IT when it comes to the significance of 60s rock ‘n’ roll. The bands first EP is LOADED with excellent originals and covers that pay homage and roots to the bands favorite era. I was delighted hazy shade actually hit the airwaves with the popularity at the time, but there should’ve been so much more……
Susanna Hoffs and Matthew Sweet have made three albums of cover tunes under the moniker Sid and Suzie. The albums are called "Under the Covers." Vol 1 is songs from 60's and 70's. Vol 2 is songs from the 70's. Vol 3 is songs from the 80's.
Well, their story is they wanted to screw it up, but each individual member didn't want to be the one responsible for being it bad, so none of them actually played it poorly, and Kevin nailed the vocal. Also, they had to cover that song, or the lable wouldn't release or promote the album It was a condition of them getting a record deal.
Hazy Shade of Winter is a JAM! That song always increases my heart rate. Perhaps that's because of me thinking about Suzanna, but the song is electric!

I hope one day you will do a video about the band Chicago. Chicago has always been my favorite band. I was homeless as a child. Sleeping in shelters and under highway bridges. Then I was put into foster care at 10 years old. My very first foster parents where big into playing all kinds of music and they played the song “Love me tomorrow” by Chicago, and the line love me tomorrow really hit me hard even at 10 years old. I became obsessed with the band. Many long, scared nights were spent listening to their beautiful songs. I got to see the band a few times in concert and even got a pic with them! To this day, when I hear those familiar voices and beautiful music come through the speakers, particularly the song “love me tomorrow” I’m whisked right back to that little 10 year girl hearing it and crying. Luckily, I found a guy who has loved me for the past 26 years. With 3 kids, financial ups and downs, and health issues…we’re still going strong and Chicago has become our band. In fact the pic I got with the band came from VIP pass my hubby bought for an anniversary present. One day I hope to get their signatures on the book I bought at their concert.
In high school back in the 80's, our Spanish teacher would take us to the cafeteria on Fridays and we'd learn and sing spanish songs as part of our instruction. Most of them were older songs. La Cucaracha, Guantanamera, etc. But he also let us learn La Bamba since the movie and the track were everywhere at the time. It was a lot of fun, of course being the rebellious metal head in the class, I wouldn't never have admitted it back then. But yeah, it was a lot of fun. And hey, I still know the entire song by heart.
Metal Health was the first cassette tape I ever bought. I played it so much the tape broke & I took it back to the store to get a replacement. Loved it!
Gary Puckett and the Union Gap- Woman,Woman. Producer Jerry Fuller took a slow moving C/W honkytonk ballad writen by Jim Glaser and Jimmie Payne added strings and horns revved up the tempo and Gary Puckett s incredible performance did the rest!! Also I fought The Law by The Bobby Fuller Four.
When the video for Walk This Way showed up on MTV, I actually had no idea who Aerosmith was, somehow. I watched the video, unaware it was a cover...I thought the guys in the video were *actors* hired to play the part of "random rock band"! Of course I learned better when Permanent Vacation came around.
Me too. I had heard Dream On, but never heard Walk This Way until the Run DMC version came out. I hadn't found my favorite genre yet and to see two groups of artists from such vastly different styles was mind blowing. Even tho I eventually found my "groove" and went into hard rock and heavy metal, I still love listening to the "pop" music of the 80s. Just don't tell all my metalhead friends back then! 😂

"Less Than Zero" was an AMAZING movie, at the time! And the Bangle's cover of Hazy Shade of Winter was the PERFECT cover song for the movie! It's one of those movies that perfectly encapsulates a moment in time! No other movie captures the 80's quite like it.
Slade are a seriously underrated rock band. They came up with a Christmas song that is played everywhere at Christmas here and has been for 40 years. But it overshadows some excellent tracks like Cum on Feel The Noize or Cuz I Love U. The Bangles version of Hazy Shade of Winter is an absolute scorcher and probably deserves to be rated higher. Besides the frantic pace, the song being done mostly in harmony REALLY showcased how good they were. Let’s also be honest, it was the video of Walk This Way that elevated the collaboration. I have vivid memories of two covers that weren’t mentioned - Billy Idol’s “Mony Mony” and Tiffany’s “I Think We’re Alone Now”. I remember my dad and my aunt FINALLY listening to “our music” in the car when we had the debate about us “now listening to THEIR music” LOL - they both got a kick out of that (Especially since my dad was a musician)… I remember his band covering “Move it on over” by George Thorogood & the Destroyers (who also had a hit on the La Bamba soundtrack) - the 80s were good times for music! ❤😁
My daughter goes to school about an hour away from our home, so she comes home a lot. She has several playlists depending on her mood. Most are mostly current, but I remember being surprised by one that's a lot of 80's songs. We had fun singing them on the way.

Right?! I was 13 and I remember watching the video on MTV. I only knew a few Led Zeppelin songs and never really got into them until college. I had to have the Honeydrippers' version of Sea of Love played at my wedding. I love being born in the 70s, past the birth of rock and roll and the electric guitar and being able to grow up with the advent of new music and artists. I spent most of my allowance on records and cassettes.♥
RUN DMC's cover of "Walk This Way" bridged that very extreme gap between rock and rap instantly. The rap crowd loved RUN DMC and of course the rockers/metalheads considered Aerosmith to be one of the founding fathers of "real rock".
I remember the rift in high school. Those two crowds never had anything to do with one another.
Then the collab came out... rap fans and rock fans opened their eyes to one another's music styles. Almost overnight the rockers and rappers were sitting at the same lunch tables in the cafeteria and hanging out during "free period" (our school's version of study hall) sharing each others tunes, liking some of it, hating some of it, but uniting over "Walk This Way" and at least those two cliques merged without animosity for the rest of time.
If you were too young or not even around when this happened, it was literally an awe-inspiring connection. That collaboration was the bridge that brought about peace between two rival groups while simultaneously exposing each group to the other's music.
No longer were there the rockers and the rappers. They all jammed together. That cover unified a lot of people, removed differences and spawned a fresh energy among people you would never have previously thought would come eye-to-eye with one another.
It was one of the last social rifts that needed closing and when it came, it was as if everyone was suddenly included together. The last dividing line between people, ethnicities, and culture just warped into one big "We're just people, man". Looking back, that song ended all rifts between people and it was as if black, white, Asian, you name it, we all just merged into one people. That song and collab is what broke the last remnants of racism (until some foolish people decided to rekindle that fading ember a decade ago... totally unbelievable that we had broken racism apart through connection over music and people not even alive when that happened decided life was too easy, so they had to force it to return just to have something to complain about).

One of my high school friends looked just like Darryl McDaniels. He graduated a year before me and went into the Marines and passed away way too young. Every time I hear this song I remember Dale; gone too soon.
You just described the ‘80s perfectly! I grew up in a 50/50 black/white town, so we shared music before the song. That kicked it into high gear, though!

I’ve misheard many lyrics in my life, perhaps most notably “Everybody wants to move away.” But it never occurred to me that Paul Young’s lover “took a piece of meat.” As for the Honeydrippers, I love their cover of “Rockin’ At Midnight.”

Richie Valens looked 17 going on 35. My mother Donna loved sixties music and opened a nightclub called "Oh Donna's" with all 50's & 60's on the jukebox and pictures of the stars of that time on the walls. I got to know all those old songs that way lol

La Bamba, loved the soundtrack and the Movie. I remember being 13 yrs old and listening to that song with my friends and we danced and sang (even though we didn’t speak Spanish). Still to this day that song gets me moving and singing and always makes me smile

I was 14 and it was really one of the first music connections that my dad and I had. My father, of course, was a fan of Ritchie back in the 50s, as well as Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper, being a teenager himself then. Until the Los Lobos version hit, I looked at my dad's music like some sort of stone age relic. It changed my perspective just as I was discovering my own musical preferences.
It’s one of the greatest cover songs of all time in my opinion. Either version, whether it’s Ritchie’s or Los Lobos, will get you in bright spirits!
Van Halen's version of "Pretty Woman" blew me away the first time I heard it even though I knew Roy did it first.
“Ice Cream Man,” too. Was that one ever released as a single?

Their influence in the U.K. is massive. Noel Gallagher cites them as one of the bands that shaped the sound of Oasis. Oasis does a great cover of "Cum On Feel The Noise".

Slade, huge in the UK in the early to mid 70's... How Big? Likely rivaling the Beatles in singles sales Big. Then their career collapsed badly as punk and new wave took over while they were trying to crack the USA, on the edge of breaking up playing student unions around the country and losing the will to live as they were 2nd billing to the cheap beer, when they got a call to replace for Ozzy at the Reading festival (one of 2 big hard rock/metal festivals in the UK at the time) they went on expecting to bomb badly, the Audience was walking away when they walked on... then they nailed it so damn hard at the end of the set they had the largest crowd of the whole festival all screaming for "Merry Xmas Everyone" as an encore, on an August Bank Holliday weekend. Cue a significant career revival.

Hall & Oates sang Every Time You Go Away in all the concerts I’ve seen of them and of course everyone in the crowd loved it. I love both versions but prefer the one by Hall & Oates.

I grew up a Simon and Garfunkel fan, and knew Hazy Shade of Winter was a good rocker. I tried to talk my HS garage band into playing it, but they all nixed the idea. Years later I was watching MTV and saw the Bangles version, and was amused at how similar their arrangement was to what I was trying to get my band to do.
Paul Simon has always been really cool with the covers. He actually texted the lead singer of Disturbed to OK their Sounds of Silence. Speaking of nostalgia those dudes are back on tour.
And Disturbed’s version of the song that he did on Conan O’Brien’s show is outstanding.
Well, he does get paid if it hits again. Publishing is where the money is.
I just recently found that Disturbed version of the song. And although the song is played up a full tone song so David Draiman can sing it an octave lower than the Paul it's a damn good cover. There's a live version where Myles Kennedy of the band Atler Bridge sings the second vocal part. Unfortunately he's no Art Garfunkel.

My sister was a big Bengals fan. I’d didn’t really like their music and was kind of annoyed when she’d sing their songs while playing the piano. But as an adolescent boy, I gotta say, Susanna Hoffs was definitely eye candy that I couldn’t take my eyes off of. She has aged very well.

Kim Wilde's version of You Keep Me Hanging On is better than the original. Imo. I like the urgency & more driving sound (for 80s pop) than the way The Supremes did it.

Honeydrippers Volume I remains one of my favorite e.p.s ever. In addition to Jimmy Page and Jeff beck on guitar it had a song featuring Brian Setzer on guitar(who also played Eddie Cochran in La Bamba) and guest guitar spots from the great Nile Rodgers who was also a co-producer. Nile Rodgers is a musical alchemist and everything he touches is amazing.

Susanna Hoffs and Matthew Sweet have made three albums of cover tunes under the moniker Sid and Suzie. The albums are called "Under the Covers." Vol 1 is songs from 60's and 70's. Vol 2 is songs from the 70's. Vol 3 is songs from the 80's.
I don't know all the words to la Bama, however, that does not prevent me from singing along for the past 40 years.

Well, their story is they wanted to screw it up, but each individual member didn't want to be the one responsible for being it bad, so none of them actually played it poorly, and Kevin nailed the vocal. Also, they had to cover that song, or the lable wouldn't release or promote the album It was a condition of them getting a record deal.

I hope one day you will do a video about the band Chicago. Chicago has always been my favorite band. I was homeless as a child. Sleeping in shelters and under highway bridges. Then I was put into foster care at 10 years old. My very first foster parents where big into playing all kinds of music and they played the song “Love me tomorrow” by Chicago, and the line love me tomorrow really hit me hard even at 10 years old. I became obsessed with the band. Many long, scared nights were spent listening to their beautiful songs. I got to see the band a few times in concert and even got a pic with them! To this day, when I hear those familiar voices and beautiful music come through the speakers, particularly the song “love me tomorrow” I’m whisked right back to that little 10 year girl hearing it and crying. Luckily, I found a guy who has loved me for the past 26 years. With 3 kids, financial ups and downs, and health issues…we’re still going strong and Chicago has become our band. In fact the pic I got with the band came from VIP pass my hubby bought for an anniversary present. One day I hope to get their signatures on the book I bought at their concert.
In high school back in the 80's, our Spanish teacher would take us to the cafeteria on Fridays and we'd learn and sing spanish songs as part of our instruction. Most of them were older songs. La Cucaracha, Guantanamera, etc. But he also let us learn La Bamba since the movie and the track were everywhere at the time. It was a lot of fun, of course being the rebellious metal head in the class, I wouldn't never have admitted it back then. But yeah, it was a lot of fun. And hey, I still know the entire song by heart.

Gary Puckett and the Union Gap- Woman,Woman. Producer Jerry Fuller took a slow moving C/W honkytonk ballad writen by Jim Glaser and Jimmie Payne added strings and horns revved up the tempo and Gary Puckett s incredible performance did the rest!! Also I fought The Law by The Bobby Fuller Four.
When the video for Walk This Way showed up on MTV, I actually had no idea who Aerosmith was, somehow. I watched the video, unaware it was a cover...I thought the guys in the video were *actors* hired to play the part of "random rock band"! Of course I learned better when Permanent Vacation came around.

I hadn't found my favorite genre yet and to see two groups of artists from such vastly different styles was mind blowing.

I bought Bookends in 2009 from iTunes. That's when I found out that the Bangles Hazy Shade was a cover. Immediately followed by "Hey! That's that Zoo song they used to play for the Brooklyn Zoo commercials back in the day!"
When I heard "misheard lyric" I was expecting "Blinded by the Light" to be on this list. I think you've done a full video about that mondegreen though.

One of my favorite Paul Young covers is Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart Again. While the song depressingly describes the break down of a couple’s relationship, at least you can understand all the words.

"Less Than Zero" was an AMAZING movie, at the time! And the Bangle's cover of Hazy Shade of Winter was the PERFECT cover song for the movie! It's one of those movies that perfectly encapsulates a moment in time! No other movie captures the 80's quite like it.

Slade are a seriously underrated rock band. They came up with a Christmas song that is played everywhere at Christmas here and has been for 40 years. But it overshadows some excellent tracks like Cum on Feel The Noize or Cuz I Love U.

The Bangles version of Hazy Shade of Winter is an absolute scorcher and probably deserves to be rated higher. Besides the frantic pace, the song being done mostly in harmony REALLY showcased how good they were.
Let’s also be honest, it was the video of Walk This Way that elevated the collaboration. Aerosmith needed Run DMC, certainly not the other way.

I have vivid memories of two covers that weren’t mentioned - Billy Idol’s “Mony Mony” and Tiffany’s “I Think We’re Alone Now”.
I remember my dad and my aunt FINALLY listening to “our music” in the car when we had the debate about us “now listening to THEIR music” LOL - they both got a kick out of that
(Especially since my dad was a musician)… I remember his band covering “Move it on over” by George Thorogood & the Destroyers (who also had a hit on the La Bamba soundtrack) - the 80s were good times for music! ❤😁
“Move It On Over” was a Hank Williams song that he wrote a long time before George Thorogood covered it. I love George’s version, too.

My daughter goes to school about an hour away from our home, so she comes home a lot. She has several playlists depending on her mood. Most are mostly current, but I remember being surprised by one that's a lot of 80's songs. We had fun singing them on the way.
