I watched this episode back in 2012 and literally flew to China to try and find this restaurant. I never found the restaurant, but got an English teaching job and lived there till 2018. It was amazing how much one episode of a tv show inspired me to fly to the other side of the earth
So you never found it in 6 years?? I go to LiQun every time I am in Beijing, also because of Bourdain. About 8 times starting in 2005. I believe I used a map in a Lonely Planet guide to originally find it, about a 20 minute walk from Tiananmen Square.
Peking duck skin (no meat on it) dipped in granulated cane sugar is pure heaven! Serve like this in Beijing. Then you have meat with skin, and meat only (for the crepes of course). Vegans are missing out on this ultra delicious foodie favorite.
iwasborntobefly is correct. Human beings can adapt to almost any taste. And we all have choices to get simple pleasures in life. For now, I like my duck. I also love my fruits and veggies. I take public transport, hardly buy anything new, walk alot, and don't own a car. So I'll take my pound of flesh for now and others may take a gallon of petrol.
Those are actually not sake, thats Japanese. It is a chinese liquor made from rice, its called Maotai. A rather expensive and over priced thing in china these days.
Agreed=) It could look like a shit hole & dirty as fuck. But the best foods in my experience are those ones that have been doing it for yrs. Using the same old pots, pans & woks :) Using the old school way of cooking things. Its time consuming but FUCKIN GOOD..LOL!!!
Anthony Bourdain knew exactly what he was doing when it comes to cooking duck in anyway. Even if it was just using the oil on something else. For the fat, or just frying up a little bit of rest. Can you exactly what was going on. And he knew it from the stoners point of you, meaning he knew exactly what was really good. I didn’t need to be elegant, although he could do that. It just needed to be something you could feast like it was a day of celebration. Hahahahaha indeed it’s good. #ItsGood.
A good roast duck is incredible!! Most people I know don't order it, usually because they haven't had a good roasted duck. But when you find a place that does it right- get it!! And like Anthony says- it doesn't need anything else- just the meat and skin- dripping with liquified fat goodness... I feel my blood pressure rising thinking about it.
This trip is starting out pretty good is code for something quite the opposite is about to happen. Unfortunately we never find out. This is only a 4 minute vid
...the duck goes through an elaborate process of being lacquered with molasses, pumped with air, filled with boiling water, then roasted over an open fruitwood fire... Amazing!
the restaurant looks clean 2 me. i understand why some of these ignorant, mean, and negative people and liars are slandering by saying the restaurant that they never been 2 b4 is dirty. just because it is a chinese 🇨🇳 restaurant does not mean people could make racist and ignorant comments about "chinese" 🇨🇳 restaurants or their culture. my parents 👫 speak 👄 four 💙 different asian dialects and a little english. the talented & humble actor and sweet singer name takeshi kaneshiro 😇💝 knows four different asian 🇨🇳🇯🇵 languages and he speaks english 🇺🇸 too. takeshi also knows how 2 play the bass 🎻🎸. takeshi knows how 2 speak, sing, and act & he knows 👌 japanese 🇯🇵 taiwanese 🌸 cantonese 🇨🇳 mandarin 🇨🇳 and english 🇺🇸 go asians 🇨🇳🇯🇵
you can find some of the best duck you’ll ever have at Ricks boatyard cafe in Indianapolis Indiana of all places, true story. the marmalade glaze is so good with it 😛😛😛
@jtobin13 It's a famous chinese liquor called Maotai. Henry Kissinger once said to former chinese president Deng: If we drink enough Maotai we can solve anything!
@Natmossbim123 beijing quanjude or bianyifang the oldest traditional roast duck restaurant in beijing there are 2 different ways to roast taste differently
actually, the primary function is to create a comfortable atmosphere. while some places do try to divert customers from the food, not all places do. there are plenty of excellent places that have a pleasant appearance. im not saying it looks boring or lackluster, im saying it looks dirty as hell. it looks like that place would be shut down by the department of sanitation in the US. how do you know this place is that great by the way? oh, and doesn't the Michelin star system only go to 3?
US sanitation has pros and cons. pros: wou won't get sick. con: your body is not prepared to fight anything in a restaurant outside of the US. I prefer challenging my body in places like this to prep it when i travel. it's like immunizations.
The official price is 2000rmb. but you have to pay twice money to buy a real one.. And even you pay that money, you can not secure that. Real MaoTai is very very scarce in the market..
@Rockieoo both beijing and shanghai are more like modern cities such as sydney and london. they r international. i reckon u may find some "small" cities with less population to have ur ''real'' chinese exp. lol
That bottle of alcohol drink ! i've drank that few times...every year there's this chinese woman whom i knew she always give our family a bottle of it.
That is the typical western understanding of Asia, sadly. They'll know all the cultures of Europe, but can't even tell the difference between spoken Japanese and Chinese even though the languages are about as different as Finnish and German.

One of America’s best good will ambassadors, interesting, amusing always entertaining.
RIP....Anthony Bourdain.....I miss you and your shows, absolutely !
R.I.P Anthony Bourdain

Anthony is cool, wherever he goes.
RIP. I loved watching your shows.
I miss this guy!!! Man, why would you do that? You were the treasure of the culture of this world. I’m sad and angry that you were gone.
Rest in peace brother thank you for all the ones you inspired
I love how he calls the mustard sauce "that mustard gas" by the end lol
Oh wow he's drinking Maotai! That's one of the most expensive and delicious spirits you can get!
As stereotypical as that intro music is I will forever duck with it lol

Smaller and dirtier the joint, often the better the food. The best fish n chips in the UK, find a place with the greasiest wall paper.
You know its legit when they use paper instead of Styrofoam packaging
@@chindvids Bonus points if you can see front from standing behind the counter.

Anthony is the best , please make more series about Asia china, hong kong, thailand, taiwan, japan, korea, singapore, malaysia and vietnam
Miss him so much

LOL you are spot on. There was an article last week about a Burger King employee standing in two trays of lettice.
i absolutely love this show =)
finally some good tv
anthony is the best!
The mustard part cracks me up every time.
Bourdain would be an awesome guy to chill with.
Damn.. that duck looks Amazing!!!!
This trip is starting out pretty good is code for something quite the opposite is about to happen. Unfortunately we never find out. This is only a 4 minute vid
Great episode. Thanks Don!!
The former secretary of state Henry Kissinger once said" Serve me roast duck and I will sign anything". It looks like Anthony likes it too.
It's funny how some of the best food is made in little hole-in-the-wall places :)
THIS IS THE REAL DEAL, GOSH the Chinese knows all the inside outs of culinary cooking...wish we had this much variety in our culture....
I love it. He gets duck feet and everyone in the west would be like 🤢 but he's all "yum"
I was at this restaurant last December and had the duck feet. Even my 12 year old liked it! But yeah, the mustard is powerful!!
Yes because every neighborhood/town/city/restaurant in the West is so clean you can eat off the floors....
...the duck goes through an elaborate process of being lacquered with molasses, pumped with air, filled with boiling water, then roasted over an open fruitwood fire...
Amazing!
I love food.Yeah! Duck and hot sauce with kimchee
i love it too what are they drinking?
I went vegetarian, but I love a good duck every once in a while.
oh hell, i'm gonna miss this guys,. life is just shitty now.
Tony was always a good sport taking one for the team .
Had a whole chicken boiled in a pot with ginseng root in korea. Real food.
Peking Duck - the Chinese contribution to human civilization. RIP Anthony Bourdain June 2018
I need someone to upload the full episode.
Maotai is a very strong Chinese wine. It is strong as vodka.
OMG I used live about 100 meters away from that restaurant 20 years ago when I was a kid!!!!
Lucky you. Do you miss that neighborhood?

Wow, that white guy has excellent chinese
THAT'S the best duck house? That fucking hole in the wall? LMAO
Great Mandarin, Matt. I'm learning the language currently and I can tell that the pronunciation is outstanding.
This is not roast duck! It's peking duck!!! Roast duck is what they serve in Southern China! Different dish!!
Damn good indeed! 3:56
Duck IS all about the skin!
Had it once, its a must!
What are they drinking? What type of alcohol? Saké?
you can find some of the best duck you’ll ever have at Ricks boatyard cafe in Indianapolis Indiana of all places, true story. the marmalade glaze is so good with it 😛😛😛
Right? and it all looks FABULOUS!
@jtobin13 It's a famous chinese liquor called Maotai. Henry Kissinger once said to former chinese president Deng: If we drink enough Maotai we can solve anything!
its cuz the food there are authentic and exotic to foreigners. :)
This is the best place. Only expert knows it.
@TheTatmandu believe it or not, some people lose a taste for flesh sometimes. they may not feel like they are missing out at all.
Not really, the cleanest fast food you'll have is Chinese Pizza hut. They really take that place seriously.
That chinese mustard is some hot hot stuff! Good but hot I like putting it on fried rice
That Wasabi busted his ass..lol
its a favorite here in the deep south where we eat what we kill and this is very good cuisine
Forget Peking duck, Chinatown roast duck is the best, the bigger the Chinatown, the better the duck.
Im so proud to be a Chinese
i miss you , man.
I CAN EAT THAT ALL DAY.
I had this in China, my fucking favorite.
Hmmm...looks so damn good. I must find some back in Toronto.
OMG that duck looks delicious, Pass on the feet though. Tony looks like he's enjoying the sake most.
Yeah but you know it sounds funny if you read it out loud.

Oh you need to. Its amazing

And even you pay that money, you can not secure that.
Real MaoTai is very very scarce in the market..
He speaks good Mandarin
i love it too
Pretty sure you haven't tried alligator or burgers and fries, since they are all respectively delicious.
@Rockieoo both beijing and shanghai are more like modern cities such as sydney and london. they r international. i reckon u may find some "small" cities with less population to have ur ''real'' chinese exp. lol
having some roast duck tonight!
They are drinking MaoTai...Now about 800 dollars for one bottle...
im hungry...
Good. 🔥
Wondering what kind of alcohol they’re drinking ?
Holy crap! They de-bone the chicken feet for you there?
That bottle of alcohol drink ! i've drank that few times...every year there's this chinese woman whom i knew she always give our family a bottle of it.
I really hate chinese mustard, its not because of how spicy it is, it has a really unique texture that I find disgusting.
Those were simpler times. It'd be nice to visit Beijing some day without fear of getting abducted and detailed.
at least you won't find photos and videos of employees degrading your food. So much for "western standards"
That is the typical western understanding of Asia, sadly. They'll know all the cultures of Europe, but can't even tell the difference between spoken Japanese and Chinese even though the languages are about as different as Finnish and German.
i love roast duck
hahahahaha mustard
gotemm
I won't be offended because I am not Chinese.
DUCK!!
