It was not even a Beta, it was an ealy alpha they showed to someone (can't remember who) to persuade them into something or other. Basically, they needed to show that you could make an old MUD into a 3D game. It was based on a revised version an even older game (tank commander I think) the studio had been involved with. Not much is left from this demo seen in this video, a few textures here and there, and I think the stained glass window too. Anyways, awesome to see it again. :)
@Cervy18 Well, you are right about being old school and playing in the kunkark era... Nothing like waiting for boats and taking 20 minutes to get from quenos to firona vie.
yeah, really! This was likely an unreleased test version of the game, with an example dungeon to show what the engine was capable of.. the GUI is definately an unreleased placeholder.. There are plenty of of vids on here thatll show you what the real released version of Everquest looked like
I don't remember this, but it must have been an alpha. A proof of concept kind of thing. Must've been amazing in 96, because I remember thinking that EQ was amazing in 99.
EQ is back and in full swing! Ecommons has about 120 people in it, black burrow can have 21 or more, Gfay have about 40+... i made a vid on how to get in. it's pretty easy! WTB SOW PST! haha
this is sooo cool i am a huge videogame lover (user name says it all!!!!!) and i love looking a my faves mmorpgs and videogames and game systems pasts this is sooooo cool
this is more alpha then beta, i recently found my old beta cd, has a bit more anti aliasing and the gui was different, hand the "scroll" looking chat frame with the clinky boarders to scale the resolution down, but ya this was not the public beta, atleast
Looks like the same graphics engine for the most part... They just updated the character models and shaders. Not to mention the interface and everything else lol.
still a lot of broken things, and devs are starting to lose interest in server, wait for EQ Classic, they are going to be using the original hardcoding that verant used on their servers.
This is not Everquest. First of all, notice the fraps framerate counter everytime he opens up the inventory screen. Hmm, didn't know fraps was around in 1998? (hint: it wasn't) Looks like this guy made his own simulation with just references from EQ like the /who.
There really is a charm to older graphics I don't want to forget. Everyone is too obsessed with pixel games to recognize this is cool as hell too.
Greatest game ever made
I recognize the beginning as the layout of the Paladin guild hall in Felwithe. Same layout, totally different textures and polygon count.
11 years ago lol

Some of this is really cool I wish it would have carried through into release.
Wait a sec.... that kitchen checker tile floor... 3 trainers... and that church? You're in Felwithe!
Reminds me a little of might and magic
I played EQ beta. It looked nothing like this. It looked exactly like EQ classic.
EverQuest still going strong.
Amazing timing.
I'd play this. I miss EQ circa 1999.
This is... ancient. I played original EQ and I don't think I ever saw this UI. Where did you get this?
@Cervy18
Well, you are right about being old school and playing in the kunkark era... Nothing like waiting for boats and taking 20 minutes to get from quenos to firona vie.
Haha... I can tell it's EQ by the stair bump and crazy texture screwup on the ceiling
They misplaced the map button for a number of years lol
That's cool if you find anymore feel free to post
This was just an early demo that they screwed around with to show to producers etc... no players actually saw it..

@JigenD
Too bad you didn't, I loved beta testing EQ, along with DAoC and WoW.. but my most favorite memories come from EQ.
There are also some commands to jump, hail and what not
3 years after this is the start of the longest going mmo
I might be a little late on this one BUT the longest going mmo is Ultima Online so...
I don't remember this, but it must have been an alpha. A proof of concept kind of thing. Must've been amazing in 96, because I remember thinking that EQ was amazing in 99.
Developers really should embrace skeuomorphism again. I'm tired of sterile UIs with minimalistic icons.
Any idea what place is in that demo?

WTB SOW PST! haha
@Jesus45U Tanaris?
Aye, much of the command line interface survived ... but lets be honest, it was lifted from a MUD, so it was already pretty mature. :)
Wow. I can see why they decided to change the GUI...
@Lokivoid
You are correct.
It's real. This was the original engine they never released.
looks like an early beta version
This is what beta in EQ was in 1998 -- not recorded in 1998.
@gadgetvsclaw
What ?
I'm afraid I'm missing the reference here.
this is sooo cool i am a huge videogame lover (user name says it all!!!!!) and i love looking a my faves mmorpgs and videogames and game systems pasts this is sooooo cool
Are you the guy I sent it to?
@EverQuestClassic Wait but everquest didn't come out in 1996,it came out in like:1998 or 1999.
this is more alpha then beta, i recently found my old beta cd, has a bit more anti aliasing and the gui was different, hand the "scroll" looking chat frame with the clinky boarders to scale the resolution down, but ya this was not the public beta, atleast
@TommyDaGreat Looks like the Temple of Marr in Freeport.
Looks like the same graphics engine for the most part... They just updated the character models and shaders. Not to mention the interface and everything else lol.
love it -fatye (master fennin ro scammer)
Didn't EQ come out in 99?
Yes but this was a test game back than
ok now tell me this is Doom 1
@kellyberger1969 EQ2 is very different to the original EQ, EQ2 is much easier on the eyes but nothing compares to the original.
lol the graphics remind me of quake 2
not really, it's fun just being in a living breathing world not just a streamlined video game you gotta beat.
lol it looks like minecraft!
looks like tes arena
this is not beta everquest this is homebrew... :/
is this everquest next

@butthead6886 i was jus guna say that lol
