The thing is that EV shines on commuting with overnight charging. However most Japanese do not have their own garage that offers 200V electricity, nor do they have to drive a car to commute.
The only time I drive is for road trips - long distance with no overnight charging is one of the specific use cases where current EVs perform terribly.
Maybe NIO and their partners will come there soon with battery swap stations, might be more suitable.
You don't need to charge overnight, EACH night. A modern EV has a range of over 300km.
The average japanese driver has a 5000km/year, and 90% of japanese drivers on their private vehicles drive less than 10.000km
This translates in 100km / week for the average and 200km/week for the 90% of drivers.
Literally, a normal japanese driver would need to charge ONCE / month with a modern EV.
Because japan has a culture of dictatorship and poverty, eating low level food and living in low level homes, being oppressed at work, (one could say enslaved) being forced to use public transportation instead of owning private vehicles.
If you look closely, japan is a dystopian cyberpunk country, a bad place a toxic place, racist and hateful for anything not japan society.

how do most people charge in China? Surely if Japan wanted to they could implement similar charging systems.

The answer should be staring you in the face. Look at what are the most popular brands in Japan in any tech segment, be it TVs, laptops, appliances, motorcycles... or cars. They top 5 in each segment are Japanese. The only company that has managed to break through is Apple in mobile phones.
Not only are Japanese economically patriotic, preferring for their money to be spent on Japanese products, they have a strong belief in the superiority of their technology.
And BYD and Kia? The Japanese don't like either the Chinese or the Koreans (and vice versa), so it's hardly surprising neither of these brands have been successful in Japan.
It’s simple. Japanese will buy Japanese car not matter if it’s EV or ICE.
Nokia was also an enormous name in Japan when they were an enormous name elsewhere as well.
They don't necessarily reject the others, just they gotta match the Japanese market. Apple managed that (and design wise it's easy to understand, but functionality wise to be honest I have no clue how the Japanese even cared about it), the Xbox also did terribly there and that's no wonder either considering it's basically the "wrong box" in Japanese (they grade their tests with circle for right and X for wrong in case wondering).
Another commenter also said it simply: the biggest advantage of an EV is "fueling" it at home, which isn't even remotely a possibility, or need, for many Japanese.
Reason why BYD sells bad: 1. Wrong strategy. They export only EVs but in China mostly sell long range PHEVs. I bet PHEVs would sell better. 2. GREED. Dolphin cost 11k USD in China and 24k USD in Japan:)

@@GallAnonim-jx2cz Selling at higher price is NOT greed. Countries often have tariffs on imports. Japan has 10% tariff on BYD I think. There are transport costs. Also if BYD selling as cheap as in China, then many of those citizens from Japan and elsewhere will abuse China by shouting "China is trying to destroy the local industry, bad China".
1) japan has been having energy crisis for decades, fukushima incident and other nuclear power plans being scaled down make the issues more serious.
2) lack of garage and charging at home especially in the city. They use 120v default which has more than 15% ac to dc conversion loss when charging
3) those tiny kei cars are very cheap and efficient, they can get nearly 50 mpg us.
4) they prefer pushing for hydrogen since they have deposits on their shores that they can mine for hydrogen in the future if needed

In Japan's case hydrogen is the way to go hands down.
The only problem is getting manufacturers to make them because if Japan is the only viable market most won't bother.
It would probably take parts of Europe building up the infrastructure too because it can work there as well in a way it probably couldn't in America's case.
@@hollowgonzalo4329 the state besides me (same country) already building and going to start commission around 2025 to produce green hydrogens. Mostly for South Korea but we're going to export to Japan too. That state is currently have around 80% electricity produced by hydropower and thermal. They are adding another 15% hydropower next year. All while the domestic electricity consumption is around 20% (that's why they are building factories to produce green hydrogens to export.
A few extras:
1) It snows very heavily in Japan, and electricity can be unreliable in snowstorms. Many Japanese still use kerosene lanterns as space heaters. EV Range also falls in cold, slushy conditions.
2) Japanese in general don't buy cars from other Asian countries. I mean there are hardly any Korean cars in Japan. Like in Australia the BYD owners are more often to be ethnic Chinese immigrants.
3) Charging networks are pretty appalling in the rural prefectures, where people actually need their cars.
4) Japan has a giant LNG import network infrastructure (much of it after Fukushima to keep the lights on) that can be easily converted to hydrogen.
5) Fuel efficient hybrids and kei cars make the EV switch less appealing during times of high oil prices. (e.g. war in Ukraine)
6) The big Japanese car companies have implicit social obligations to financially support their small parts makers in their supply chain, many of which will go out of business if an EV switch happens. It's already happening in Germany with big layoffs among those who supply their carmakers.
We know better. We know EVs are propaganda shit. It is not just BYD not selling in Japan. Even Tesla is selling like shit. Our grid is similar to that of the US. No scarce. Stupid politicians and fools who believe EVs are the only answer. Technically, nothing advanced about EVs. How can I say that? China has had hundreds of EV manufacturers for over a decade. Most of them can't even build an engine but they can build an EV. Smart EVs...but you can't stop them from burning. I wonder why...
One of the critical reason for Japan going hydrogen only because Toyota says so, and Toyota's been blocking the industry from lobbying EV related proposals in the parliament. Mechanical combustion engines are what Japanese good at, Toyota is not ready to give it up and handover the market to EVs carmakers, especially Chinese brands whom the Japanese been looking down on.
EVs are for city commutes, but good public transport infrastructure is always better than EVs. Cars are for outside the city and that's the one aspect where EVs fail currently.
In your country probably. In China there are millions of charging stations so charging on long trips is not an issue.
This is funny to me, cuz I live in Hamamatsu, and it has some of the worst public transportation systems of the country. Accordingly, Shizuoma prefecture is the region with most car sales, beating even Tokyo.
Stop talking about pure EVs. BYD in China offers EVERY MODEL as EV and PHEV in same price! And these are long range PHEVs, category that doesn't even exist in the west or Japan. So, people in japan don't buy EVs because their market is 10 years behind China. In China capitalism and competition created great cars for every budget, for every needs.
Ultimately it's easier to promote a car-free lifestyle there than an EV-centric lifestyle.
Just back from Japan today where I spent a lot of time spotting EVs. About a dozen spotted over a 2 week period. Manly Tesla 3, Ys. 2x BYD (Atto3 and Dolphin) and a Porsche Taycan.
I went to a Toyota dealership and asked them if I could see a BZ4, they did not know what it was. They did not have any and said they don't sell EVs. They had a Miro (Hydrogen) car out the front.
Japan is very different to Australia. There is not much space. They really need to have an on street charging system to make it viable. Very rare to see a garage that you could charge in. To there credit their electric subway system with millions using it everyday trumps our EV efforts in terms of pollution reduction.
I also noticed that there is a huge solar uptake in Japan so soon the penny will drop that all the excess can go into transport.
Maybe they need battery swap stations, people living in high rises in China are enjoying this convenience.
What you have explained regarding the charging stations being limited makes sense. Most homes especially in the city are tiny most homes don't have a garage so you find most people park their cars on the street or in a parking lot. Like in the video their infrastructure is not made for charging stations to be accommodated there
Because they dont sell BZ4X in Japan but I think Lexus 450 or something basically the same car but far more expensive. BZ4X are for rental.
Evs are ideal for countries with no space with stop and go traffic.
Can charge EVs at home too. I guess they did not know too.
From Chinese perspective, reason is simple, their Toyota honda japanese vehicles is good enough for their own, that's why our EVs doesn't have any market in their country

Mainly because Japan has lost the EV-technology to China, so in order to cut the loss, they have to suppress the EV market.

This makes sense if you consider the fact that it's only now that their Government is beginning to phase out Fax machines and floppy disks from being in their local and central government's. Japanese society seem to very nostalgic. Which from eco perspective that is good for the environment. Means that they are not wasteful and will aim to look after and maintain their possessions before replacing them. I also love the fact we see many of the classic JDM cars like RX7, NSX and R34s still being driven on the roads.
NitrousXProductions Not wasteful? Every vegetable is individually wrapped in plastic. The government has even tried to stop this, but everyone rebelled! Single use plastic bags have been banned in Australia for a few years now, and the ocean and the future is thankful.
Or you know EV is not an "all-size solution" to "real" people's problems, the same situation in NY where people don't actually own garage and park in different spots every day. Also, the range anxiety is always there, charge two hours between your destination (that if you found a charging station) or spend 5 minutes at the gas station?
It was a massive change from horse and buggies to ICE cars 100 years ago. We’re going through a similar transformation now.

Most people do not want to adopt electric cars. It's a very slow adoption because it's just not as good and convenient as ice cars
EVs aren't that different to regular ICE vehicles in terms of capabilities. All it did is change the fuel source and internals, outside of that, it's legit just the same 4 wheeled metal box that moves people along a road.

Its amazing how so many people seem to hate mentioning the Nissan Leaf was the first mass produced EV. A hybrid vehicle is not an EV.
A hybrid is definitely the most practical, better than plain EV only.

Here is what I’ve learned living in a major city in Japan: It’s rare to see an EV or an EV charging station in the city. I am sure there are some, but they are difficult to come by and difficult to spot. I would guess the reason they are not more common here is that they are very expensive to install in most homes. Not only that, but also the garages here are much smaller than those found overseas, which leaves very little room for storage, much less a charging station.

They reject EVs because they have to no battery manufacturing on the scale for EVs. Japanese would rather get battery tech from local companies like Panasonic and use their current technology than to buy large battery packs from companies like BYD. They want EVs, it's just that they know they will end up killing their own peers from other Japanese companies faster. So they are delaying the inevitable and hope things will turn around but I think EVs will be the future. They are also buying time so that Panasonic and other battery manufacturers of Japan can get their tech up to car level battery packs and compete with China battery manufacturers
Actually Japanese people only buy their country car. You go Japan will see more than 99% Japanese car on the road.

4.4mil yen? For a Chinese car? Yeah, that's not really going to sell in Japan. Maybe if it was 2mil JPY it would attract more customers. Even Korean cars really don't exist in Japan, I've seen 2 or 3 Hyundai in total in my 30 years here, and at least one of them was a South Korean diplomatic car.

4.4mill is not high, after counting subsidize from gov, the total price become around 3.4 mill.. compare to ICE compact car it is affordable.. even more if u compare to new prius or bz4x it is totally affordable
@@hendrakho1710 Base Prius in Japan is 3.2m JPY, including tax. There will be very, very, VERY few Japanese who would spend that much on a Chinese car in today's world. Even Hyundai has an almost impossible time selling cars here, I have seen exactly ONE of their new electrics in Tokyo.
Same thing would be if you go to Korea or China. You'll barely see any toyotas or honda

I'm of the belief that China is hoodwinking the globe into buying the over abundance of EV cars nobody is prepared for. Also I think Japan is more conservative and sober in their planning. The car industry has been a major player in our world economy but all I see is China destabilizing it. We will buy the right car with the right technology that fits a sustainable future. EV cars make sense for rental or fleet cars right now but possibly Japan doesn't ses putting the entire world population behind the wheel of electric cars a viable option. Who knows?

I can't argue with how the Japanese view and make cars. I live in the US and I have a Toyota and Honda that I bought brand new 5 years ago. Both are amazing cars are are very fuel efficient especially when you consider the horsepower they produce. They are not hybrids and are not electric. They have given me zero problems and next month is my last payment for my Toyota and I will be done paying off my Honda soon after that. Because of this it will be like an automatic raise from my job because I will no longer have a car payment and both cars run better than the day I bought them. I am looking forward to owning them many more years trouble free years to come.
My Honda Civic is so special to me I am never selling that car and will give it to my children. One problem with EVs is that many will not outlast the payments making them a bad financial investment for the buyer. Both my Toyota and Honda still hold their value today with my Honda being worth more money than when I bought it so if I absolutely needed cash right now I could get good money from both of my cars. You just can't say that about a used EV.

In short EVs can’t meet standards most people here have.
Here is my take:
1) Japanese people don’t “reject” EVs. They are just not competitive enough to win buyers, because:
2) The first priority here is cost effectiveness. EVs are simply expensive to buy.
You need to double your budget compared to similar cars with an engine. This is a dealbreaker for most people.
Also the value declines very fast due to battery degradation. Few buy EVs second hand and it is considered as a stupid choice.
3) So many compromises compared to car with ICE. You need to wait half an hour to fully recharge. You need to install a charger (it is so expensive you can buy another used car!) if you want to avoid the infrastructure problem. You need to deal with battery degradation, and swapping batteries is expensive.
4) Poor protection against accidents made EVs unpopular. Many Japanese people fear battery explosion when EVs crash. (This is somewhat irrational because no one questioned the same to HVs…)
5) There are still doubts for the quality of Chinese or Korean products quality.
So many Japanese people don’t trust them, especially when accidents easily become fatal.
6) Not a few people doubt how ecological EV is. Zero emission is considered as a fancy “lie” (too much energy consumption to produce batteries).

I also want to add that Japan gets very hot and very cold in almost all prefectures.
Heat management is very poor in EVs unlike ICEs, where to both heat and cool the car a lot of energy needs to be expended.
In the prefectures where the majority of vehicle sales volume occur, there are fewer charging infrastructure meaning the EVs are not practical especially when taking into considerations the heat management topic I mentioned above.
@@kakkeeyatsu Agreed. In Hokkaido (the northernmost prefecture), even HVs are considered as a bad choice since most cars go at cruising speed and heaters in EV consume quite a few energy, making EV less efficient.

People in EVs (wel built) are more protected than in an ICE car, as EVs have tougher structures. For example Zeekr, super strong and zero fire. But BYD not that premium.
Only seen 3 TESLAs here in the last 5 years in TKO, thinking how lucky I was to see such a rare breed. While the electric postal scooter sightings are often.

One of the posiible reason is Japan's years of cultural development, they are inclined to see non-japanese as Ganji means alien in everything. My opinion is this can lead to become doggedly & blindly be too loyal. To be different or stand out can rock the status quo. This mindset can be good and can be bad, this make a big difference in their choices.
This isn’t true. iPhones out sell Japanese phones, and European luxury goods outsell domestic luxury goods. So it isn’t true that Japanese just blindly hate foreign stuff. The fact is Japanese cars are well known for quality so they prefer their own cars.

I could see that playing a part in it for sure but i think the biggest reason is just that the Japanese do indeed make the best and most reliable cars so it isn't merely blind nationalism.
This guy missed the EV best seller of Japan = Nissan Sakura, the car of the year 2023, the first commercially successful EV of Japan is not only an EV but also a Kei EV.
The only BYD that can compete with Sakura is BYD Seagull. Because, not just the Japanese, ppl worldwide want affordable Kei class size ultra efficient EVs. Not fullsize waste of money.

My family went through multiple iterations of japanese cars (Honda, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Honda) and also own a BYD. I wouldn't say Toyota and Honda are much better than BYD.
I agree that they don't need as much maintenance as Ford and BMW, though.

Chinese EVs are pieces of crap built with low-quality materials. If you care about safety, avoid it at all costs. There are many videos showing Chinese EVs exploding.
That was the hybrids and problem ones. BYD blade batteries using the LFP chemistry should be fine, some of the safest.

Tons of videos about that. I saw a video where one guy's car started accelerating and his breaks weren't working. He crashed into traffic. The alarming part of the video was that it was a dash cam so it was like sitting in the drivers seat.
my dad lived in japan for 5 yrs as a uni student until he worked, not only does he have no reason to buy an electric car, he doesn't even have a reason to own a car, and that was in the early 2000s

Our generation is just broke. We can't afford any vehicle. Kei cars sell well because it's the cheapest in the market. Even then it's still a hard sell.

interesting take from Japanese perspective... but Toyota is an 800lb gorilla and Japan invested 80 years building the best gas powered cars in the world and will continue to do so in the future... I understand why there's no "rush" to EVs... they understand the complexity, even expressed their admiration for the best player in space (Tesla) and didn't rush in w/ short sighted arrogance like GM, Ford, Dodge, even VW, etc... They didn't under estimate what Tesla had accomplished...
Most Japanese realise the pollution came with cars batteries, that is why the whole country is looking onto hydrogen fuel

Japan sells millions of cars in China every year, and then refuses Chinese electric vehicles, which is an unequal trade relationship
It could also have something to do with styling and build quality. Chinese build quality and engineering still has a low status despite their dominance of the electronic goods market.
As for styling, Chinese cars tend to use poor interior materials and Try to make up for this build quality deficit by throwing in lots of tech and pointless ‘quirks’.
This doesn’t necessarily appeal to the Japanese or other markets when people want cars that, at least, feel like they’ll last 200,000+km.
Then there’s resale value, a new untested brand from a country with this type of reputation will struggle to hold value against other established brands, even if those cars are mostly made in China anyway.
Finally there’s chinas reputation for poor human rights. When you hear China is using slave and prison labour to build its products, when you see crackdowns on democracy and political dissent, are you actually going to feel good spending 30-40,000 on a car from such a country? A purchase such as this is as much a purchase of the heart as it is one of the head.
The main thing about Japan is they have brains and don't easily buy into hype, unlike most countries. The Japan consumer cares about Function over Form, and won't commit to something unless they're sure it'll work for them. Toyota, For example, has infamously not embraced EVs, Not because they can't or are behind the curve, But because they Don't Believe in the EV Future fundamentally. They think Hydrogen is a much more viable sustainable energy alternative technology, and that Hybrids (where you're using Electricity to Extend Gas Mileage as opposed to eliminating it all together).
And that's because they ARE. Look at the plethora of Issues coming to light with EVs in the US -- Huge issues with Cold Weather and Charging/Range (Usability issues). Huge issues with EV Battery Fires (Safety Issues). Huge issues with Repairability (Insurance and Maintenance/Repair Cost Issues). Huge Issues with Manufacturing -- 90% of the world's lithium comes from China, Making EV Car Manufacturers dependent on China, which most countries don't want (GeoPolitical Issues). Concerns over the Amount of Energy Needed -- If we need more energy for large scale adoption of EVs than we can produce with Renewable Methods, then we're not actually accomplishing ANYTHING by switching to EVs, We're just using Fossil Fuels to make the Electricity instead of directly putting them into the engine (Environmental Issues). And we're seeing with the Cybertruck and Tesla Semi (which convenient nobody is talking about anymore) that EVs for Carrying loads are insanely impractical (Workload Issues) . Not to mention the snake oil being sold regarding the technology, where the range is "theoretically" 500 miles on a charge, But you loose 40% of the range just from the normal charging range 20% to 80%, and further depending on extreme temperatures, age of the EV, Driving Style, Load, etc, and in the end you're only getting 100 Miles of the advertised 500.
Take all these issues as a single package, And the Japanese collectively and rightly say "Maybe this EV future isn't the smartest thing", and instead 1) stick to the tried and true technologies of the current and previous decades (ICE and Hybrid vehicles) , and 2) invest into future technologies that don't have ALL of these downfalls that we see with EVS (Hydrogen, etc).
Japanese, Unlike many consumers in most other places in the planet, Have some ACTUAL Intelligence when it comes to this kind of stuff, and that boggles the minds of many who just can't comprehend intelligent decision making.

Rofl tell that to all the Japanese car companies shuttering their factories in China as their sales in the largest market in the world tanked year on year as they do not have a viable EV offering for that market, also there is not a single Japanese battery maker of note, the Chinese and Koreans dominate. The issue with EV adoption is the requirement to build new infrastructure to support deployment and you gotta start somewhere, if you never start, you will still be in the same spot a decade later. China has decided EV is their future and spent the last decade investing on that infrastructure so all the complains of no charging stations, no service centres, range, etc., has pretty much gone away. Most of ASEAN countries have also in last few years decided that EV is also their future and there are lots of infrastructure activities to have this change progress every year.
The one thing nobody talks about is noise pollution as well as air pollution in densely populated areas. I for one would love to have all that noise and air pollution moved somewhere else where it impacts the less number of people. I live in a small city of 12 million people, no I’m not in China, and it would be nice if those millions of cars spewing smoke in our daily traffic jams are all quiet and not spewing smoke in a densely populated small city.
You forgot "first-mover advantage". You should be at the forefront, constantly improve the tech, and get the fruits when it is mature. You are disguising laggards as "safety/reliability lover". Why need 5G network, one can wait til 100G network and start deploying accordingly?
I recently viewed another video about the shortage of charging stations in Japan is one of the main factors in lackluster EV sales. In the video, an EV owner attempting to take a trip out of the city was frustrated and stressed by inoperative charging stations when he needed to recharge. Some station operators had gone out of business due to high operating costs and inadequate return on their money and their now useless installations were abandoned but they weren't removed from the list of charging stations. Luckily, he was able to finish the trip, but the stress from range anxiety took a toll on him.
Infrastructure has to keep up with the sales. But maybe they just don't want to build more chargers.

Chinese EV brands should be extremely happy after watching this video as well as reading the comments here. This means the Japanese legacy car brands will not make EVs to compete with them. They will be able to capture market share country to country in the absence of Japanese car brands.

EV in Japan is been hurt by the lack of government push for such kind of mobility, I suppose. Unlike major EU car brands and few US cars, for some reasons mixed by consumers /government decisions haven’t yet fully embraced EV. Debates still exist on whatever EV is truly the future while other alternatives are developed including in China despite its clear technological advances on this topic. Guess we are still in the balancing cycle and a firm trend has emerged yet. Hence the moderate /mitigate consumers attitude
EVs are one of the technologies that will power the cars of the future. However it will not be the only one. Hydrogen fuel cells will be another technology.
EVs now are in their teenage years whereas hydrogen is in its infancy.
However there will be situations where hydrogen will be a better fit than EVs. For example in dense urbanised cities where people live in apartments and can’t have a home charger, they may opt for a hydrogen car as opposed to an EV. Also along lot of the existing infrastructure that stores and delivers oil and liquified gas, could be repurposed for hydrogen.

A battery pack should be able to work in a vendor neutral way. Think AA batteries for example that work in any device that can hold them.

In 2020, out of 54 nuclear reactors in Japan, 42 were operable but only 9 reactors in 5 power plants were actually operating. 24 were set to be decommission..
26 reactors have applied for restarting, 12 will be up by 2025, another 6 by 2030.
In India japanese cars are manufacturing CNG cars and are selling very well. The same goes with Hyundai. India too has the same problem like Japan, i.e less access to personal parking

if you look at private imports you should see more people going to EVs as well, as the Wulin Mini EV has been quite popular in Japan along with the BYD seagull, both are much cheaper to purchase. Also the two have a relatively big customization culture

Those who can afford cars are those rich people and they don' t care about saving on petrol or if they buy EV, they will consider buying Merc/BMW/Audi, rather than BYD!! hence chinese EV sales will be low!!
The reason is that Japan has a large supply chain in gasoline car industry, too many people to feed, and can't afford to just have all those companies die out and that many people losing their job.
Also, it is because that the Key to the smart EVs, is the 'SMART', or data. But the Europe and Japan are just way behind in the mobile internet days. They are all using apps and platforms from the US, they don't have their own apps, they don't have the access to the data, so they don't do very well in the SMART part.
And even if they could overcome all those mentioned above, their relationship with the States could just kill all the possibilities. If you can not have your own independent industrial strategy, nothing could be done.

Both Tesla and BYD have fallen on hard times in Japan. Few people are interested in them because they take a long time to recharge and replacing batteries is expensive. Unless battery performance improves dramatically, the company will probably operate at a loss even if it enters the Japanese market.

Up to 5 years ago say, there was a per-mile cost in favour of EVs, if you accepted that charging at home was ‘normal’. There’s never been an argument that EVs were more comfortable in terms of cabin temperature capability - and that remains to this day. If we were to cost the price per kWh for heating the cabin of a vehicle, to THE SAME LEVEL AS AN ICE CAR, the high cost of battery capacity, the massive loss of range to heat the vehicle as much as a fossil-fuel car would be, etc, all hit against EVs. Now as energy has shot up in price in the UK where I live, either you make your home into a power station, and make 90% of your trips using that home-generated energy, or simply don’t buy an EV.
This still leaves the frozen-feet issue I have experienced both in a Nissan and a Tesla Model Y as a deal-breaker for EVs in my opinion. I think in some ways, the battery energy density has still not reached the necessary performance level and yet the fevered PR of several different battery innovations continually imply they will all arrive very, very, very soon! But they don’t. I haven’t even seen anyone with a new Tesla battery cell design showing it on youtube or anything…it’s perfectly possible, by the time the EV is price-comparable to fossil fuel cars, motoring will be an over-regulated bore. ?! Take care all.

Surprised, BYD didnt bring in its whole lineup. BYD started selling officially here in the phils in 2024. They brought in the entire lineup. And the best selling model is the sealion which has an SUV inspired design. It only cost as much as mid range toyota corolla. The cute seagull cost as much as the cheapest susuki model. Though both countries have the same problem with charging stations. Some gas stations has charging stations as well as shopping malls. But you can also charge them at home. At the current rate, BYD sales will outpace many ICE brands next year. Nissan are selling its Leaf here but its 60% more expensive than the most expensive BYDs
This is an incredibly interesting video! Japan is definitely the furthest behind in terms of technology adoption out of all developed countries (and many developing countries) globally.
Japan has lost their lead in most industries, such as home appliances and rechargeable batteries, over the past few decades, so you would think that they would want to stay focused on keeping a foothold in an industry that they still do well in (automotive). Sad to see that they are moving slow, but not surpising.
Hopefully they are able to maintain their large presence in automotive globally. I have doubts.

Japan makes very reliable little gas & hybrid cars. Letting their domestic brands be overwhelmed by less expensive Chinese imports in their own market would be bad optics
In Japan you do not see many foreign made cars(counting in streets, probably 3-5% foreign cars imported in Japan). Media, nationalist and Government put tariffs on imported cars are the fundamental reason.
Japan doesn’t have any import tariffs on automobiles. Foreign cars are fairly niche because they’re not tailored or particularly well marketed to Japanese consumers.
There are few reasons that I think why BYD sale is not much. Japan is staking on Hydrogen instead of EV for green energy, that's why they are more into building hydrogen infrastructure instead of EV.
It's war, and chances of hydrogen winning is not pretty.
Remember back in the days when Japan insisted on deploying their own CDMA mobile phone network and totally excluded GSM? It eventually faded out of the market.
