@@Dan16673 Their intentions is to have Chinese people have the same buying power as the people in the west? why should white people be the only ones to enjoy living beyond their means off the backs of the labor of the poor?
The rise of BYD and other Chinese automakers is fascinating and shows how quickly markets can shift. As an investor, I’m keeping an eye on EV stocks, especially as competition heats up globally. While Tesla still has strong brand loyalty, BYD’s expansion and Buffett’s backing make it a compelling long-term play. It’s a reminder to diversify and stay adaptable in this ever-changing market.
I agree. Even with great opportunities, we should proceed cautiously. Seeking market analysis or advice from certified market strategists is important.
The US talked as if they didn't enjoy the Chinese subsidy themselves. For decades, GM, Ford, Toyota etc enjoyed subsidies from Chinese government in term of free usage of lands for their factories and low taxes. Tesla not only enjoyed the free land for its Gigafactory, it even enjoyed the EV subsidy launched by the Chinese gov to promote EV. We are not even talking about the subsidy they enjoyed in their homeland, the USA, courtesy of the US federal and states government. China also didn't push them out of the Chinese market, they are losing market share due to their own incompetence. For years the Chinese government has been promoting EVs. When the world largest auto market, and your largest customer, said they want EV, you should have listened. Instead they rest on their laurels, thinking the Chinese can never catch up with their ICE cars tech, and that EV will never take off. They are right that the Chinese didn't catch up with their ICE cars, the Chinese never tried to, the Chinese just leaped ahead with EVs. Few years back, when the Chinese government wanted to set up the time table to ban ICE cars, the foreigners beg the Chinese government to give them more time. Years later, they still couldn't catch up, and climate change wait for no one. The foreign automakers performed so bad that even their Chinese partners are worried about them. The overcapacity is also another BS concocted by the losers in the west. the Chinese only exported about 15% of their cars, while the Germans exported about 70% and the Japanese exported about 50% of their production. Who is the one with overcapacity problem?
Lol. Silly rant that has no basis in reality. Chinese cars are junk and the world (except for the poor who can't afford anything better) know it. The overcapacity issue is real.
@@shyamranger Doesn't work that way. China has reputation for making junk. US consumers demand high quality and safety. China has given $240 billion in subsidies to their EV makers and these companies pay slave wages. Once these issues are resolved, then entry into US market might be considered.
"Instead of producing better cars and providing the American consumer with higher value for their dollar let's just spend that money on lobbying lawmakers into preventing competition from entering our market". Free market my ass.
The same happened with Solar Panel industry and Shipping industry, etc. The US gov have been making trade policies based on campaign contributions for years. This is what happened when government is privatized.
Nio is losing around 200 million dollars every month. only BYD and Tesla can build millions of EVs a year profitably. the others (including American startups and legacy automakers) are all in production and/or selling hell...

I own a BYD Seal. fantastic car, good value even with the inflated price we pay here in Australia. Legacy auto got caught sleeping, and now they're crapping their pants, tugging at governments aprons, hence the tariffs, and accusations of "government subsidies" of Chinese auto, while they themselves gobble up taxpayer money.
Yes, mostly true, but ... Australia is quite a unique market, and has no plausible reasons to block or impair the mass import of Chinese cars, ev or otherwise. You have great solar energy too, so it all makes sense. But the most important thing, is that you don't have a native car industry any more. That makes a huge difference. But .... the perspective from Europe or the US is very different. Take Germany for example. The auto industry there has been the bedrock of their economy ever since the end of ww2. It employs over 100,000 people directly, in the car factories, but many times that in all the supply chain related companies. It did represent 20% of Germany's gdp. This is very significant. All of this is now in jeopardy. Irrespective of exactly whose fault it is, the chinese auto industry could now, if unchecked, obliterate all of this. The social and economic cost would be huge. The German government has no choice but to protect its economy and it's people. When there is mass unemployment and social unrest, bad things happen. Populist leaders and right leaning governments thrive, and nationalism and xenophobia quickly take hold. I believe we've seen that before. In fact, this is already happening all over Europe, a worrying development. There are so many things at stake here, and this incredible and painful transition seems inevitable, but it still has to be managed very carefully. Although I agree broadly with what you're saying, I don't think the issues are simple or straightforward. This is all going to be an unprecedented era of change and chaos, and will affect everyone, whether they work in the car industry or not.
Chinese car makers receive about $4B a year in subsidies. There's no way anyone can compete with that. Not even Toyota, who receives huge subsidies every year.

They can use the chip, but don't have the software engineering prowess to utilize the capability. The best programmers went to the Silicon Valley and remained there. According to the IMF 2023 figures, the US gov't direct fossile fuel subsidies in 2022 was $3B vs China's $270B. America's energy industry is largely self-sustaining and doesn't really need gov't subsidies, whereas in China, the gov't still spends $270+B year to enable cheap energy and overcapacity.

Exactly. Some aspects of China still share DNA with Soviet Union, but there is another side that is like what you said: capitalism on steroids. Companies ruthlessly competing, expanding and exploiting their workers. One fun fact: there is no real unions in China, while in capitalism US, some unions can hold the whole economy hostage.
Fun fact: for those who laugh at BYD standing for Build Your Dreams, let me tell you a story. When BYD was founded in 1995, it’s headquarter was located at YaDi (亚迪) Road, Shenzhen, China, so they named their company YaDi. However, the two words were already taken by other company, so they added a Bi (比)in front, and that's how BYD (BiYaDi 比亚迪) came about. So, Build Your Dreams was just an English motivational slogan they launch later. ----quoted from a TV interview to BYD founder Wang Chuanfu in 2019.

The US treasury subsidises the entire auto industry with $80 billion dollars, so let's not kid ourselves, the Chinese are not the only one's doing it and if American automakers worked harder to innovate and reduce costs as well as invested in better tech and factories, whilst not been allowed to rely on protectionism, so they can't move at their usual lazy pace, whatever happens to them they have it coming and deserve it. America is supposed to be a free market economy which produces innovation and lower costs through market pressure, it is as long as American execs do not have to work hard for there bonuses, otherwise it's lobbying time, this is the reason our cars are getting worse and increasing in price because they can rely on good old uncle Sam to protect them, why do you think our cars failed in Europe, yet Chinese cars are only becoming more popular, ask yourself?
This. And China even helped Tesla with building their gigafactory in Shanghai in like 9 months. The TSMC plant in Arizona was planned out in 2020 and they're looking to start producing chips in mid-2025 as an early estimate. I think that's more than fair of them to treat Tesla this way, when you compare things.

I my opinion US automobiles are not popular outside of US (and Canada) because automakers never wanted to get on board with improving fuel economy (for starters). NO ! Au contraire. Once again they lobbied government ($$$$$) to get their way and received exemptions for fuel economy mandates and a bunch of safety regulations for anything 'truck' (that's all pick up models) because they are supposed to be for businesses. Right. 🙄 Now the automakers are PUSHING pick-ups to the general public as being 'the safer' alternative. They are actually unsafer because they don't have the same safety features that 'normal' cars do and also, they make traffic as a whole unsafer (for everybody outside of a 'truck').

@ super cool! I’ve seen models for $15,000 online. It would almost be worth it to buy it in Mexico, take the tariff, and import it. But I’ve never seen one in the USA myself, so I don’t know if that would even be possible/legal
Yeah; almost all the EVs in the US are SUV. I don't want a SUV; we need more smaller EVs in the US that are affordable. It looks like BYD offers more smaller EVs than what's available to US consumers today from all manufacturers combined.
But they won't because they know the US auto industry would implode the moment they did that. US companies know they can't compete and are trying to exclude Chinese companies due to this.

Haven't people been calling for cheaper cars, but GM and Ford have been addicted to high profit trucks and SUVs? Haven't many of them eliminated sedans and they stopped making the Ford Focus? That addiction led to the all EVs being a luxury vehicle craze. Why don't they make a $15k EV Ford Focus? Ford is addicted to $80k F150s.
Not really.. Americans want large pickup trucks -- the avg selling price of a new vehicle is just under $50K, the most pouplar model the F-150, at avg price of $60K. Those who want cheaper cars buy slightly used for less. Small/compact vehicles, often under $25K, are not very popular in the US -- it's a small shrinking segment.
Not the same thing. They are cheap largely because their development has been funded by the Chinese government, and the raw materials are subsidized. They have developed a unique system of state sponsored capitalism to rapidly overtake western companies.

The US always accuses China of its EV subsidies. But plz remember, no government has unlimited funds to subsidize, all the money subsidized by the government originates from taxes. Are Americans poorer than Chinese so that the US government doesnt get enough tax to subsidize their EV industry? No Is the US government printing less moeny than their Chinese counterpart so that they dont' have as much money to subsidize as China ? No The only reason is how each government spend their money differently. US government spend their money on subisidizing their military complex, or launching wars, while Chinese government spend their money on supporting their important industries such as EVs, batteries, solar panels,....
Hiding behind tariffs is exactly how the US car companies lose competition against Chinese cars. Not only US, German, and Japan car companies have already lost the Chinese market. And they are pushing to grow the markets in Europe. Eventually, US cars can only find its place in north American. The labour cost for a EV car company is only 10% of the sale price, so you cannot use Chinese cheap labour costs as an excuse. Innovate like they do, or US cars will find themselves nowhere to sell.
I think the US government is protecting its people/workers from losing jobs and the competition will be a landslide anyway if there is no tariff. It is sensible to buy some time for the US car companies and let them grow a bit before the real competition comes. Otherwise, it is like letting a child (US EV companies) compete with an adult (Chinese EV companies) and there will be no chance of real competition anyway.
Tariffs only hurt everyone. Can't wait to see the agony and anger that all the people who voted for him this time around in two years when inflation hits 20% from all of the tariffs he wants.

In the early 90's owning a kia or hyundai would mean somewhere along the road, you might have made a few wrong choices in life. Fast forward to today they offer units that are often compared with European luxury cars. Nobody thinks about american cars when it's about luxury. nobody mentions any american car brands when talking about reliability. despite the propagandas spread against foreign competitors, american car brands failed to catch-up. Now china is gearing-up, what does america do? impose tariffs. instead of forcing its companies to do a better job, they made sure that the playing field ain't even. And it's people are left without any choice. despite how big a country america is, the world of an average american is quite small thanks to its government.
The legal obligation for corporations to profit above all other interests doesn't help. They're only able to screw over American workers so much due to legalized labor unions, so costs are passed to the consumer as higher prices for lower quality (aka engineered obsolescence).
China was for a long time the number 1 economy. The Qing dynasty lagged behind the west after the European industrial revolution. They shut their doors. Japan painfully went through their reforms over the Meiji era and modernised. China on the other hand resisted and finally had their doors forced open by western canons and guns. Today, we see the west doing what the Qing dynasty did. Afraid of competition and seemingly incapable of implementing painful reforms. Interesting times.

Sorry, but China already won the Global EV race. EV's like all consumer electronics are going cheap. EV's above $35,000 sales price is not justified going forward. EV's are going the way of laptops, TV's, computer monitors, smart watches, vacuums, tablet's, streaming devices, etc. Tesla dropped the ball by developing the Cybertruck and failing to deliver on the $30,000 EV. It's too late for Tesla.

Down here in Australia there are no car tariffs, and over the past 2 years the Chinese EV manufacturers have entered the market in a big way, especially BYD and MG. I have driven several of them and honestly came away stunned. The quality of their cars is insane, you only need to sit in one and drive it for 10minutes to know that legacy automakers are dead ducks. I was so impressed that I now own one (an MG4). The reason the Americans slapped tariffs on these things is that the American car CEOs know the truth - China has already won the race for EV tech. It's not even close.
the reason is because the goverment of china's subsidy reduces the cost , while the American independent companies are doing it themselves, now that Elon has Trump's backing he will rise for sure ,

Not so everywhere. Thailand car market is still conquered by Toyota which has around 33-40% in car sales (except the Motor Show and the Motor Expo events).
Went to Thailand and saw many Tesla and many BYD. Tesla was the classy businessman car, BYD was the classic communal car. Car ride services like uber (grab in Thailand) typically had BYD cars. They looked good, felt normal inside, and were quiet. It made me realize that in the USA, the car is such a pivotal point in breaking into the middle class, having a brand new car, an SUV for christ sake starting at 12,000 USD is insane. The ability to travel freely will greatly help bolster the lower class. It will break economic barriers if allowed into the USA. Cars will not be as much of status icons when they are a majority under 15,000 USD. I strongly believe in allowing chinese EVs into the USA.
Transportation is the single biggest driver of upward mobility, but space-hogging cars of any sort isn't the answer. The real solution lies in mass transit to handle routine commutes and popular demand centers (stadiums, shopping districts, the airport, etc).

for years, america has been meddling with other countries affairs. It went on for too long that they forgot how to take care of themselves. america used to be the leader in almost everything. Never thought that a giant like boeing would be where it is today. nowadays, everything in america is made in china. and instead of giving its people better options, they impose tariffs? I'm old enough to know the reason why brands like Lexus, Acura, and infinity exist. and you'd think they would learn. fast forward to today, those cars that where once dubbed as "toys found in a cereal box" are still major players in the business.
That's just how the free market works. Some countries are better at producing certain things than others. Chinese cars are just the nail on the coffin for the US auto industry, before that the Japanese and Koreans were the first to take over the market. They produced a higher quality product for less- USA just cannot compete with that.

I'm SO unsympathetic to the complaint that China subsidizes its EVs. Like...so what? The US subsidizes a lot of stuff too. China saw a market in which it wanted to encourage fast growth, so it deployed subsidies. It's not exactly a new idea. And now we as American consumers can't get in on it, because the US hasn't been as ambitious about EVs? Ugh.
Elon doesn't want that. That's why he has been so interested in the white house over the past few years. He knows Trump favors tariffs on Chinese vehicles. That keeps his biggest competition away from the US market.
They want you to drive American EV's which are more expensive because they choose not to make cheaper ones so their profits go up to buy back more of their stock and inflate the price.
As a BYD industrial Technician in the US, I can attest, these BYD's are changing the market. US industrial makers can NOT compete. Buyers are not concerned with longevity. Pricing is the key now.
BYD has been operating as taxi in Shenzhen for more than ten years. GM has been producing cars in China for more than 20 years. China consumers are not on a whim, they have chosen a good one.

It's because the chinese government put like 300 billion into electric vehicles.
Yes, the "overcapacity" kind of narrative is ridiculous. The US is just making up excuses to ban Chinese EVs, and Europe is "smart" enough to follow.

Right. 🙄 Now the automakers are PUSHING pick-ups to the general public as being 'the safer' alternative. They are actually unsafer because they don't have the same safety features that 'normal' cars do and also, they make traffic as a whole unsafer (for everybody outside of a 'truck').
Very well said. 👍Couldn't agree more.

The US always accuses China of its EV subsidies. But plz remember, no government has unlimited funds to subsidize, all the money subsidized by the government originates from taxes.
Are Americans poorer than Chinese so that the US government doesnt get enough tax to subsidize their EV industry? No
Is the US government printing less moeny than their Chinese counterpart so that they dont' have as much money to subsidize as China ? No
The only reason is how each government spend their money differently.
