Hi Nick, a good review and it looks a seriously good effort from BYD. However, you didn't mention test efficiency & range. Is this because like most manufacturers, the actual figures are nothing like those dreamt up in the lab?

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

Thank you! Range was shown on screen at 3:00 🤓
I could incorporate my own EV range test but the problem is, I test cars all year round. All of the cars will get worse range in the winter vs if I test them in the summer so that wouldn’t be fair.
It’s WLTP, so that’s a real world example in the best conditions that you can achieve. But weather and other factors will have an impact on what’s quoted so quite often it will be less.

Fun fact: for those who laugh at BYD standing for Build Your Dreams, let me tell you a story. When BYD was founded in 1995, it’s headquarter was located at YaDi (亚迪)Road, Shenzhen, China, so they named their company YaDi. However, the two words were already taken by other companies, so they added a Bi (比)in front, and that's how BYD (BiYaDi 比亚迪) came about. As a result, Build Your Dreams was just an English motivational slogan they came up with later.

I have a Seal and it’s the best car I’ve ever had (my previous cars included a Mercedes S class a couple of Volvos several Japanese and Australian cars and my wife has a wonderful Citroen C5).
There are a number of things you missed on your video. Firstly, at least in Australia, the car has heated/ ventilated front seats and heated rear seats. The seats are also leather on the top two, of the three models we have here. The climate control can be changed via voice control as well as three finger swiping on the screen.
There is also a heads up display which does an excellent job.
BYD has already sent three updates after consumer feedback since the car was released here in December 23.
I would recommend this car to anyone looking for a sedan. They also have a number of SUVs that are worth looking at.

We have had a major OTA update recently in Australia. This allows a vertical three-finger swipe to change temperature and a three-finger horizontal swipe to change the fan speed from any screen. Plus, the voice activation is up there with the best. It can change all the necessary elements of the aircon. This update has dramatically reduced the intrusion of the safety systems as well. So much so one does not need to turn any of it off.

I watched a video post in a popular youtube channel for BYD: A famous columnist abroad visited BYD last year, at the end of the visit, he asked a question to byd marketing people, "I knew byd have had 20 years of experiences in car manufacturing history, why do you enter international market so late?". The marketing people told him very plitely that she didn't knew the answer, but she would forward the question to byd technical people and they would answer his question.
A week late, the columnist received a email sent from BYD's technical chef, told him that during byd's first 10+ years, they were leaening how to build a car so their design and quality were not good enough to compete. Late byd hired world's 1st class designers, and invested lots of new technologies so their manufacturing capabilities promoted a lot. In 2021 BYD thought they could now compete with all the world brands in both EVs or hybrid.
The columnist late said that he assumed the same factors when he asked the question to byd, but he was very impressed that byd's tech leader gave him the answer so frankly. That's the great attitude of an excellent company.
    Go BYD!

For current buyers of new cars resale value is a problem, you are right. But what is important (and there is not enough data yet) is how happy the people that buy those cars used and for cheap end up getting. If they are good and cheap, word of mouth will eventually make more people want to buy them used and that will raise the resale value. Not tomorrow, and that is something people buying one now should take into account. And probably a reason why BYD's new cars have to be cheaper.

    • @jding1573
      @jding1573 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@pauloavelar123 BYD invest much more than Tesla in R&D every year and think of the efficiency of Chinese engineers and cost, the actually development value may be double than Tesla. Also BYD has the best supplier chain in China and most of the key parts are made in house BYD, the results is their price are so competitive.
BYD also has high end of vehicle: Yangwang U8 SUV ($150K) and U9 $240K racing cars, BYD Denza are developed with Mercedes and now BYD buyout all the shares and rights from Mercedes.
Toyota already adopt BYD's hybrid technology in their new cars.
No one will doubt BYD will be the top 3 vehicle manufacturer in the world in 5 years, may be 3 years.
That's why our government want to ban BYD with the slogan of "national security". The reason reason is US cars can not compete with China now and in the future.

Had my BYD Seal premium 5 months now here in Thailand and it is a brilliant car. You mentioned using the V2L for camping but it can do a lot more. I have added an automatic transfer switch to my 18000 BTU house air con which uses the BYD Seal battery as a 220v, 50hz power supply when plugged into the charging/discharge port. It uses 10 to 12 kw hrs from 5pm to 7 am from the BYD which can then be recharged in the morning using solar panels....it works a treat. If you said this in the 80s, I guess you could get away with that statement. Except he forgot to mention that Japanese automobiles and electronics had been dominating the world for almost 4 decades! You can't even say that about Korean cars and electronics, which in 2009/2010 was already leaps and bounds ahead of the Western world. Today they are still scoffing at Chinese EVs -- just read some of the comments here -- not realising that they've got the world's automobile industry shaking in its boots.

Actually, in Australia, the indicator stalk is on the right-hand side because, like in England, we drive on the left side of the road. In Europe and America, it is mounted on the left side. Because they sit on the left side of the car.
Reason.....Try changing gears and indicating at the same time when the indicator is in the middle of the car. So for England, the right side for indicator stalk is actually the correct side. It's only all the European imports with the easy mod of just moving the steering wheel to the right side without adjusting indicator stalk is what makes you think it is correct.....But it is wrong!
Look at any english made car...

Missing is Testa's routing software that integrates nearby chargers and battery range with navigation. However, I use ABRP as an app on Apple Carplay. Works perfectly and integrates non Tesla chargers as well.

There have been just six EV battery fires in Australia out of more than 180,000 EVs on the road, according to EV FireSafe.
In its submission to a federal government enquiry on electric and hybrid vehicle battery fire risk, it noted that none of these were spontaneous, related to charging, or caused explosions.
Three incidents where EV batteries caught fire were caused by an external fire (unrelated to the vehicle), one was related to an arson incident, one by a road collision and one by road debris.
Fire and Rescue NSW said in a report issued in March 2024 that just three of the 456 lithium-ion battery fires it attended in 2022-2023 involved electric vehicles.
One involved an MG from which the battery had been removed and not disposed of correctly, one involved a Tesla Model 3 hitting road debris on a highway and one involved a battery from an Audi RS e-Tron that had been removed in a workshop. The report also listed four hybrid battery fire incidents but did not outline the causes.
The three top culprits were instead e-mobility devices like e-bikes and e-scooters (90), battery chargers (46), and energy storage batteries (37).

So dd the Koreans - not sure why. However - all the European cars have always had the indicators on the left (Mercedes, BMW, VW group etc). Yes I bought this as my first EV and love it and yes its the 500hp version. It's not quite as refined as my previous Kia Stinger 3.3 GT but is a beautiful car. One thing to note is the AC controls are usable with a click of a button from the center console and not just from the screen. You can also use the steering wheel buttons to adjust the climate. My only small gripe is with the height of the driving position but this in all electric cars. I like to sit a low as possible but with the batteries under the car you just cant get the feeling of sitting on the road. Even the Kia being a big car I would sit as low as possible, which is very low. worth every penny, is up there with the teslas if not nicer and is something else compared to a 360bhp petrol in terms of acceleration and torque. You can also change suspension with two levels. Sound is very decent not the best. Screen rotation helps to view more maps in front and more camera angles when parking and turning. It is pretty annoying and quite gimmicky to have everything controlled by screen that doesn't always show it. In BYD Seal, the AC blower direction are even screen-controlled.
    Their reply is simple:
    "Just talk to the car"
I realised how quick and responsive the voice system is, even in cheap low cost oriented Wuling/Baojun ones.
Sad to say, we, global consumers are used to clunky slow voice command systems like the ones I experienced in Mazda and Mercedes-Benz. The S-Class featured in back in 2003, but 20 years later, the W213 still couldnt process nor understand simple commands correctly.

What an excellent and informative video. I live in China and do get a little sick of everyone bashing “Made in China” when a lot of products, like this car, are actually world class. We have been happily driving our Honda CRV here for the past eight years but are now actively considering a change. Going around the sale rooms it is very easy to note a huge difference since going to Honda so many years ago. You go there today and there are only three or four tired-looking upgrades of the same cars. The size of the sales area has been decimated as has the sales force which seems depressed and as uninviting as their cars. On the other hand visit BYD or any of the other sale centres and their is a sense of excitement and pride, an eagerness to show their products which is in marked contrast to not just Honda but also Toyota and Ford dealerships. We are pretty much settled on buying a Tank 400 hybrid in the next few weeks. Fantastic car to go with our lifestyle, wonderful sales team who were eager and knowledgeable about an exciting and well-built product at a great price.

Yes that indicator stalks are "the other way around" in most of the world l. Whenever I drive a car from the UK I find it so cool that they are "the wrong way round"

I think the fad of having everything on a touchscreen to use while driving is perverse.

@LysanderLH Except all controls can be activated by voice. My BYD allows me to do everything without my hands leaving the steering wheel.

Haven't tried it while car play is running but two finger swipe left and right adjusts fan speed and two fingers up and down controls temperature. Also 99% of the things you need to do in the car you just tell the BYD assistant, it's very very good. Seal was too low for my dodgy knees so opted for an Atto 3.

Ah yes I heard this from a few people since I made the video. Everyone knew about the swipe gesture apart from me 😅 I know for next time!

That was very informative. A good, professionally done video - well done Nick. The low centre-of-gravity makes it a car handlers dream along with the mind-blowing performance. My only concern is the large and distractive computer screen. I see its merit in real-time navigation, but could it be changed to a smaller screen? (obviously not by BYD) or removed entirely say on long road trips? I noticed it was very quiet inside as you were driving - the road and wind noise was barely noticeable. I presume its sound system is good for listening to music - these days that is a given. What was the charging time from empty to full charge? Look forward to your next video. 👍

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! No sadly the screen can’t be changed or removed. I did notice it was very quiet on a couple of long trips I did and the music system was very good too!
Charging time depends what you plug in to, I did most of mine at home as it’s way cheaper but I did test public charging too. BYD quote 30% to 80% in 26 mins at 150kW

Can confirm that in Japan the signal indicator stalk is on the right side. My MIL drives an Audi, which has the stalk on the left and it does take a moment (and unintentional turning on the wipers) to readjust!

Temp and fan speed can be altered with 3 fingers swiping up/down or left/right from any screen. It was a software update.
