I am from Malaysia. I got my Chery Tiggo 8 PRO in Feb 2024 for USD37,000. This similar model in China cost about half the price I paid. And mine is a castrated version without many features such as the HUD, zero-gravity seat, etc. Higher price mostly due to the local import tax. I am extremely happy with my new Chery. The quality is good. The Chinese are not stingy giving a lot of premium features which the Japanese can’t offer. And the after-sale service is very good. I also own a Honda Civic. I think the Honda service centre just want to suck my blood dry.
similar experience in india (honda). the costs are actually quite affordable but the honda dealerships try to rip you off into changing parts or offereing services you don't need like wheel alignment at 6000 kms
In Indonesia, official Honda repair shops are also known to be expensive, so many consumers get their services done at regular repair shops near their homes

China's battery technology is also at another level where no other country can rival. Welcome to the 21st century. Note that this means Western and Japanese automakers who relied up to 30% of the Chinese market will be all gone in a few years. This is why Chinese EVs displayed at the Shanghai Auto show in 2023 sent shivers down the spine of US/European and Japanese automakers with their first reaction of shock, then fear and then angry as they know that they can never sell their ICE cars in China anymore in the very near future because they are behind Chinese EVs which they have neglected for too long. They have themselves to blame with their hubris arrogant. Looking down on the Chinese is their downfall.
The West leaving Russia has been a blessing for Russian businesses. They fill the void. That's perfectly fine and the growth of the multipolar world will enrich both nations much more going forward.
Chinese cars cost 3-4 times in Russia and have questionable quality. There is no blessing for Russian businesses, as they don't produce anything. A few corrections to the video: 1. Ford has been out of the Russian market for quite a while even before the sanctions 2. Chinese cars are assembled in their own factories in Russia, or directly imported. Abandoned Western car factories in Russia are doing different things, but not a lot of car assembly actually. 3. Chinese cars in Russia cost more than in China because of the import tariffs. The lack of competition has nothing to do with it. 4. I was surprised Lada Vesta wasn't mentioned - the flagship model of Lada. Instead a very specific Niva Legend was talked about.
Yes, I had the same things on my mind. 1. Yes, Ford canceled sales of 3rd generation of Focus in 2017. They had problems with their factory , including strikes, long before sanctions. 2. True. For example, former Hyundai factory is assembling something called Solaris after Hyundai Solaris, Russian version of Accent / I30 line 3. Also true. Taxes as well some other reasons like pre-installation of alarm buttons (Era-Glonass) were a reason why most of automobile giants started to manufacture cars in Russia, as well as making "specific" models for the Russian market. 4. Indeed. Vesta is a good example of a new Russian car with more than 80% of parts made in Russia, a unique design, which makes it look good comparing to other B-class cars, produced in Russia prior to sanctions ! Although people may say that it has some "troubles", it's still a good car and a huge break through for Lada, which is known in the West for Niva or Classics' Lada, based on Fiat (e.g Lada.Riva), and nowadays it's quite modern.
after Russia joined the WTO in 2012, there is no more official tariff on imported cars.. but the Russian government still imposes 300,600 rubles (~3500$) recycling fee on every passenger car with an engine volume between 1.0 and 2.0 liters.. by the way, this recycling fee will be further increased starting from 1st of Oct this year.. however, the Russian government totally refunds the recycling fee for every car produced locally inside Russia.. so, one could think of the recycling fee as a form of tariff that protects Russian automakers from foreign competition..

In China Toyota and Volkswagen cars are sold very cheaply and their sales are getting lower and lower and not even competitive, but in the US and Europe these cars are not only sold at high prices but also sought after, so it can only be said that the western world does not have any advantage in the competition in the future.

It’s kind wrong to think Chinese are making double profit, you need to consider transport and import cost plus also greedy shop dealers, I am sure in reality Chinese sell for the same sticker price maybe some typical marginal profit. The problem in Russian it’s not the brands but greediness from dealers. It was the same before sanctions as well.
Also the best tactics of dealers it’s to install some addons like alarm, better floor mats, etc with cost of let’s say 100,000₽ but sell the car ONLY with extra options for ₽500,000 on top of sticker price. And they won’t sell you the car if you don’t pay the extra options. This is why most people will not buy from big car dealers (also this was way before the sanctions).
Competition within China is fierce, and most brands want to explore overseas markets. The recognition of Chinese cars in overseas markets is still low. They can't sell vehicles at exorbitant prices. At least not for now.
Chinese cars are taking over from European and America cars in many parts of the world. They look just as good, offer much longer warranties and are considerably cheaper. So much so that some countries are hitting them with tariffs to try and slow them down.

First of all, those Chinese cars you can find in Russia are mostly outdated, even hard to sell in China, due to one main reason, they are not hybrid/EV. Secondly, your friend there, all those beautifully crafted EVs are not inexpensive even in China, importing them to Russia would be much higher priced, though there are some few have been and being imported into Russia, brands like Avatr, Li-Auto, and Yang Wang, but there won't be many want to buy at that range of price. Last but not the least, fossil fuel is cheap in Russia, and they don't have massive infrastructures of charging device built up like China, cars that showed in your video would do just fine to fulfill the gap of Russian market.

Geely chevy and haval used to be main and leading car brands which produces traditional gasoline cars in China, and they sell pretty well before 2020 when new energy vehicles like BYD and other brands are becoming super competitive. So these brands like Geely are shifting to hybrids or electric in their latest models in China, but their gasoline models are still selling in China, especially in northern part of China where it's very cold, or western part of China where it's not very populated. You don't want to go to Beijing in search for dealership of gasoline cars because Beijing has almost stopped providing new registration plates for gasoline cars and hybrids these days ( yes, hybrids included), and even the registration plates for electric vehicles are strictly monitored. If you exclude Beijing and Shanghai, gasoline cars are still selling in China. The Russian Market is unique, because the Average Consumer is typically far more "Brand Loyal" compared to other Europeans. So this will be a very interesting development, to see how things change after Sanctions are lifted.
I'm Russian. I had Nissan. Now I have Haval. Even if Nissan returns I won't switch back to it. Because Nissan essentially abandoned me. When I needed original Nissan spare parts I couldn't get them even though they WERE in European warehouses. That's exactly the reason why I decided to get rid of my Nissan. Some people search for alternative ways to purchase original parts, I didn't want to bother. If Nissan doesn't want to sell me parts, I don't want to jump through hoops to get them.
The price of new vehicles here in Canada is outrageous. I bought a new Honda Pilot that cost me over $60,000 after taxes. This was for a mid-range version and the higher optioned ones cost considerably more.
Yeah, I heard that the situation with cars in Canada is even worse than in the U.S. Btw, heading down here won’t help you either, unless you are buying used. Dealerships in the U.S. are forbidden by their contracts with the manufacturers, from selling to Canadians.
I just bought a 2021 Acura RDX in the highest spec for 33k (36k out the door). 17k miles, 60k waranty, and perfect cosmetically. Was there a reason why you bought new?
Chinese ICE cars is just above average quality. Chinese is really good at EVs. but the current batteries might not be suitable for Russian weather, maybe in the future, Russian can really enjoy the great price and quality of Chinese EVs.
@@ibrahimtouman2279 EVs are not only EVs, they’re now developing into smart phones on wheels. Pure ICE cars simply can’t handle that due to pure physics limitation. For example, BYD car operating system can control every single wheel speed up to accuracy under 1 second. No ICE engine can do that even with help of operating system. Moreover, gasoline cheap then Russians can choose BYD hybrid, which is also the best in the world right now.
@@华夏-u2x The Chinese ICE cars were based on old Western platforms like the Rover 75. With EVs most companies started from the same point. MG (SAIC) is selling lots of EVs in the U.K. It helped that there was already a dealer network to support them.
If you set aside the stereotypes about Chinese cars, you'll see they offer great value for their price range, even though there are still some minor issues. For example, in Australia, many Chinese cars on the streets demonstrate that they can be trusted in developed regions. The U.S. imposes a 100% tariff on vehicle imports from China, which suggests that Chinese cars are very competitive. If Chinese electric vehicles were allowed in the U.S., they could potentially outcompete many traditional brands. In some developing countries, Chinese cars are already the top choice, and U.S. sanctions only accelerate this trend.
"which suggests that Chinese cars are very competitive". No it doesn't, it suggests they are hugely subsidised and built by workers earning a fraction of that in the EU or US.
Well...don't laugh at the Lada Niva for where the fuel hatch release was finally found. Three decades ago, I was driving a rented Ford (forget the model) across the NY Thruway, past Buffalo, from Cleveland to Boston, when I had pull over at a gas station. The fuel cap release could not be found anywhere. One-and-half hours later, after numerous folks had tried to help - passing motorists, truck drivers, etc - we finally managed to find it. It was in the glove compartment.
The main reason for the higher prices in Russia is the import tax (mostly lobbied for by Lada). It applies to both imported cars and foreign-brand cars which are assembled in Russia (in which case the tax depends on the percentage of parts which were made in Russia - less Russian parts = more tax).
after Russia joined the WTO in 2012, there is no more official tariff on imported cars.. but the Russian government still imposes 300,600 rubles (~3500$) recycling fee on every passenger car with an engine volume between 1.0 and 2.0 liters.. by the way, this recycling fee will be further increased starting from 1st of Oct this year.. however, the Russian government totally refunds the recycling fee for every car produced locally inside Russia.. so, one could think of the recycling fee as a form of tariff that protects Russian automakers from foreign competition..
Lada Niva is notoriously spartan and uncomfortable, but also - very, very good for real off-road driving. And very cheap and easy to maintain. Snow, mud, cross-terrain - it is made for that. It is the total opposite of an S-class or 7 series.
It's a car build in different times. A solid car, simple, easy to fix, and allterrain. A working class car build in different times so that people could fix them to go to work. Now you have to work to be able to fix the car XD

1. Ford has been out of the Russian market for quite a while even before the sanctions

Cars are twice expensive here in Vietnam (a south neighbor of China) as well. Mostly due to high tax and low competition
This is why most people will not buy from big car dealers (also this was way before the sanctions).
it is definitely Russian government that is profitting from the process 😂😂😂😂
Competition within China is fierce, and most brands want to explore overseas markets. The recognition of Chinese cars in overseas markets is still low. They can't sell vehicles at exorbitant prices. At least not for now.

The rugged little Niva first took to the road in 1977. And 40 years on it’s still going strong.
There is simply no car in existence within this price range with the same off-road capabilities. Russia does not have the same EV infrastructure as China, so obviously they need to sell gasoline powered cars, at best hybrids. Why did Russians needed to buy western cars when they have Chinese cars next door.
Well said. I think people forget that the Russian government slaps a 48% tariff on all imported products plus the VAT. I'm sure once Russia starts building up its EV charging infrastructure a lot of the newer Chinese designs will show up, maybe even have factories in Russia to assemble them.

i would like to point out one misleading thing at 17:15. In China these days , you can get whatever you want at decent price, gasoline, hybrids, electric, as long as you don't live in Beijing, where you can get nothing.
Its a very interesting piece of information (about Beijing not providing licence plates to cards other than electric)
Does make sense.
@@717pixels9 It's not "not providing", but in limited numbers, and all appliers have to go through a periodic lottery.

BEV plates is in another queue-based system. The estimated waiting time is calculated to be about 32 years in 2024.
Been to Beijing several times for the last decade.
The place is very specific in terms of geography - being trapped down between nearby mountains it's a perfect place to keep polluted air not moving, like a soup in a plate.
So I totally undrstand local authorities on strict switching from gasoline to electric cars - it's just a matter of a fresh air.
But not every place in China has the same conditions.
There are many Geely 4S stores in Beijing, which are not very remote from the city center. Each store sells gasoline cars. I just bought a Geely Haoyue last year, so I am very aware of it.

😂😂😂

I used to be a real car person, all be it without a huge budget. I've owned loads of different classic cars (UK), a few European and even a couple of US muscle cars but I've completely lost interest in modern cars so if I lived in Russia, I'd be quite happy to get from A-B in an old Lada or Buhanka, cars just don't have the appeal they used to.
,, буханка`созданна машина для войны.Сейчас их в огромных количествах отправляют на войну,там ей нет равных.
У меня лада веста до сих пор новенькая и ни разу не было проблем с ней. Ничего лишнего, все строго, но надёжно.
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. Quite a few of my friends now own Chinese cars. Great reporting.
Excellent reporting RR! Many thanks for your down-to-earth and informative video.
