2018 Mitsubishi Mirage Review and walkaround.

  • The trusty Toyota Echo finally bit the dust. I set out to find a cheap fuel efficient car to replace it with and ended up finding the car I feel best captured the Echo's stabilizes.
This little Mirage is great! Inexpensive, extensive warranty, fuel economy that would make a hybrid blush, and all the features of a modern car.
I just took it on a 700 mile trip for business and it averaged 49.4 MPG's ! The little 1.1 3 cylinder engine mated to a CVT transmission is a great peppy combo. As fast as the Echo with out the need to shift.
I really feel like this is the Geo Metro of it's time, and it's sag so many people passing this one by only to end up with more expensive cars that don't get as good gas mileage.

Good review my dude! I own a 2019 Mitsubishi Mirage ES manual and have done some stuff to it as well. Driving spritely around town and back road ways and it's really fun small zippy car! Mpg is very good, getting 45 mpg average with keeping up with traffic, etc. I believe the consumer reviewers that this car is great for what it is. It's roomy, easy to shift on the manual, of course the mpg is great, steering is effortlessly, very light weight so car is still quick despite the lack of horse power, parking in tight areas are easy, and just to add my personal, I like the 3-cylinder engine and the noise it makes. This is a modern traditional old school that brings back the days of small economy vehicles. 😎👍

@@regg5917 I have the hatch. Its sportier and easy accessable from the rear trunk than the sedans my honest opinion. But what I read online forums that the sedan has a tad bit more beefier suspension than the hatch models. Everything else the same. More mainly what you prefer. 😎👍

I am so happy with my CVT 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage, i have had no problems with it and i have put 75,00 miles on it, it is a bit sluggish on the on ramps, but goes pretty fast in the 55-70 miles per hour range with out much problem, it just takes a minute to get up to speed, thats why you get awesome gas mileage with it, i spend half as much on fuel now for work, witch is 25,000 miles a year so this car is awesome, USA doesn't have many cars like this, other nations do, Europe, Japan, Asia, Canada, Mexico, every where except USA, car seems weird, not a huge SUV, but its really a great buy and great car

Glad to hear it! I'm coming up on the 5000 mile mark and I'm still very happy with mine. It's smooth, and efficient. I think the little bugger looks like a sports car with the chrome and color, but as my wife says, it only looks like a sports car!
Since my days of being a speed racer are long over I have had no issues with my commute. I took it off the mountain and the dang thing got 49.7 MPG on a long trip!!! Many Hybrids can't match that!

I'm actually loving it how excited you get for modern car amenities, and felt pity you haven't enjoyed these feats before, which we call so 'yesterday's standard'.
I mean, radio is standard, backup cam standard, powered everything, standard.
Nowadays people get excited over self driving cars, etc...
Had 5 cars in the past 10 years; so I do get the new car excitement, lol!
I would have bought that car with a manual though, the CVTs last for 100-125k miles only. The good is that a second hand CVT installed from the junk yard, costs about $750. so not too bad.
The CVT is promoted to get better gas mileage, but that's only below 35-40 MPH. The 5 speed is much better on the highway doing 60+ MPH.

The JATCO CVT7 is perfectly paired with the 3A92 engine, so isnt stressed at all with only 74lbs torque. Go on MirageForum, where's there hundreds of CVT version owners doing rideshare and delivery with well past 150k miles. I should know, I own 2. A 2014 DE CVT which I instacart in and a 2017 G4 sedan version also CVT. The % of premature CVT failure vs Nissan is much lower for Mitsubishi/Suzuki.

Someone bought it on a Saturday, drove it home and then their credit didn't clear. They brought it back Monday with less than 200 miles on it. and I got it for under 10K with the full new car warranty still in effect.

Yeah buying a car when you haven’t paid the other off is never ever a good idea. If you don’t like your car enough, sell it after it’s paid off before buying something else. It’s just good $ management. Not sure why you’d want to buy another car though? What’s wrong with the one still being paid off? Once it’s oaud for your golden for many years.

Get an arm rest though, the OEM is shit. The tire noise is a bit loud on shitty roads, I recommend switching to 175 65 r14 tires. Way bigger selection, and more grip, only slightly affects your mpg.

Well, putting down the hood makes it sound a bit tinny. But other than that I think the quality is sufficient. Plastic interior seems to be a common complaint, but I see no difference with other cars of this type. They have mostly plastic interior with maybe a few slightly higher quality touches here & there... often only available as an option costing extra money. As for the driving... when you're going fast and cornering, you can feel it keel over a bit, but it's not like you need to race through corners anyway. In terms of driving, I think it controls very well. It's comfy and precise. Does it feel like you're connected with the road? Not really, but driving this car is not very stressful for longer trips, unlike most other small city cars. Anyway, this car isn't the most amazing one... but it's definitely the best bang you can get for your buck. It's a reliable car and one of the cheapest in terms of gas mileage. Replacement parts are pretty cheap as well.

Also there isnt a big after market parts for these Mirages, making them dealer reliant unfortunately. I had to get the back drums done at 50k miles at a Mitsu dealership and it wasnt cheap at all. The fronts I had done cheap somewhere else. Good thing about the drums though is you only need to replace them once or twice in the cars lifetime. The front pads do 80% of the work.

    Congratulations Eric!
I bought a '14 Nissan Versa Note Hatch and have a few questions...
    1. does that Mirage have "fake" shift points in the CVT/ mine does and I hate it.
    2. are you allowed to tow with it/ mine towing will void the warranty
    3. Red and blue are great colors for vehicles, I got blue.
    4. does yours have navigation?/ mine does
Does it have that "blue" long life coolant, and I've had CVT shift problems, but so far a CVT service flush has brought it back to new. I always use the "severe service" when it comes to CVT maintenance, and your Mirage has MUCH MORE ROOM under the hood to work on things!

    • @FarpointFarms
      @FarpointFarms  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey there!
It has the "Car play" thing where you hook up a cell phone (I don't currently own one) and it has the navigation in it. So yes and no? They didn't have a unit with stand alone nav or I would have got it.
It doesn't seem to have shift points. I drive it very easy and it seems to just slowly creep up the rpm scale. I did floor it one time to see what it would do,and the rpms jumped, but that may have jut been the cvt trying to keep up.
I can't imagine towing would be a good idea with the CVT but there is a unit available to mount to it so someone out there is doing it. I'll wait until its out of warranty to do that stuff with it.
I always seem to end up with gold or tan cars, and I decided since this was the only one I'd ever get new that I wanted it the red. I think it looks pretty sporty!
It has the 100K pink coolant, and the CVT is to be flushed every 30K. I will be doing it by the book so I hope it lasts a long time!
The big issue here was the CVT. I've always owned manuals and know that CVT transmissions tend to have issues, but all research into this car leads me to belive it will be a decent car with great mileage. I'm getting older and the thought of mid 60's me still shifting seemed like it wouldn't be a great match so I went with the CVT. So far I am VERY happy with the car. Great mileage, comfortable, Much quieter on the inside than the Echo, great fancy radio and now that it has cruise it's really a great riding car.
I know the upper class like to bash cars like these, but I wouldn't be caught dead in a BMW so I guess there is a ride for everyone. I do find it funny that they say this car is noisy and rides poor when I feel like it's a massive improvement over both my 2003 Echo and my wife's 2002 Civic.
I looked at the Versa as well, but really liked the idea of a 3 cylinder.

My 1980 VW Rabbit Was 72 HP weighed more than the mirage, had a slower 0-60 time and was considered sporty when it came out. If you are old enough to remember when 0-60 times under 12 seconds were considered sporty this car feels like a rocket. Heck a lot of 70's sports cars had slower 0-60 times.
I also had a pickup truck that was 52HP and I drove it for over 10 years. During that time I hauled a massive amount of gravel, wood, and mulch. It wasn't a speed racer, but it got the job done.
I think people get stuck on HP ratings and never look at the Weight to power ratio. Take one for a test drive and instead of flooring it to "See what it can do" Drive it like you would normally and you'll see that it's got plenty of get up and go.
