      Well said. But in defense of the haters out there, I did have to drive the Mirage twice before I got it. The first time around I was comparing it to all the other 40k+ sedans I typically rent. It took me a few hours behind the wheel of the Mirage before I realized that's not a fair comparison. This is a true budget vehicle. And I wish there were more like it. Not everyone needs, or should buy, a fancy car with all the latest tech. ...okay, I'll get off my soapbox now. 😀

    Professional reviewers and car enthusiasts forget what this car was built for. Inexpensive reliable transportation. I own one and I’m completely happy. It gets me from point A to point B with no problem at all. My wife owns a Corolla, therefore, when we go on a longer journey we take the Corolla. I am a state government employee and my salary is not that high ( low 40’s), so this car fits my budget perfectly. And this is the reason for this car, for folks like me who are on a tight budget, that still want reliable transportation to and from work. Will I win any races? No, is it luxurious? Hell no. Will it impress anyone? Nope. But then again I’m not about appearances or trying to keep up with the Joneses. Awesome review by the way!

    Great to see a positive review on the Mirage. I work for Enterprise and everyone thinks this car is total garbage but I am one of the few that like it. I think of this car as a 'Modern-day Geo Metro' because of the 3-cylinder it has and hybrid like fuel economy. Yeah the engine is buzzy and shakes, but what can you say. Simple reliable transportation. One thing is for sure: when another gas crisis hits (like another 2008), this car will be in huge demand, and the people who have one already will be laughing their way to the gas station without worry of fuel cost. That is the beauty of this car and others like it!

    • @100RentalCars
      @100RentalCars  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Theo. And I agree, there's nothing wrong with the Mirage. Im fact, I wish there where more small, reliable, fuel efficient vehicles like this. The roads would be a better place! And how is Enterprise treating you? I'm there four days a week, so sometimes I feel like it's my second home.

    My favourite car. As another person mentioned, there exists an even more basic model with no AC, manual windows in the back, and no power locks. I have that one (a 2015) in manual. I can't imagine a car simpler to work on. And it's been dead reliable, so not much to work on... so I went about upgrading it.
    Adding cruise is quite simple and inexpensive. You can add factory cruise yourself for about $100 and a couple of hours of effort (if you buy a used wheel with the controls). If you replace the stereo with a "DIN Kit" (Metra makes ones) you can fit any single or double DIN stereo you like without any special adapters. I'm working on a circuit to let you use the factory steering wheel controls (which you'll get with your used wheel you installed for cruise control) for Pioneer stereos. And, of course, I ended up installing a subwoofer.
    Next project will be heated mirrors and heated seats. Maybe eventually installing Air Conditioning. Seriously, the car is so reliable I'm *that bored*.
    And, as far as price goes, I think I got the cheapest deal that's ever existed for these super-basic models. Paid $8995 Canadian dollars, plus tax (the ONLY extra charge was $30 for a tank of gas, no PDI or any other BS). Totally brand new. Had to buy it in pink, though... Guess they couldn't move it in that colour. The $14,000 Mitsubishi pretends these things costs is a joke, work your dealer down by at least $3000!
    The manual shifts really easily (light as a feather and very forgiving clutch) and drives a lot faster than the automatic, which truly turns the car into a sloth. Which I only know about because I loved this car so much, when the wife's car broke, I bought here a used 2014 automatic Mirage (with most of the features mine didn't have).
    I think most other reviewers have lost sight of who would buy such a cheap car. If you want to get from A to B, and you don't care how, you just don't want to pay much, this is the car for you. It's cheap to buy and it's cheap on gas. And the warranty means it's cheap to maintain, at least for 5 years (10 if you don't mind fixing items that aren't the engine/transmission). Most other reviewers complain that the interior feels cheap (sure, it does... it's a cheap car), they complain it is slow (yes, that's why the fuel economy is good), they complain that at 100 mph it handles like a death trap (it sure does, why are you driving so far over the speed limit???), and they complain that Mitsubishi didn't paint under the hood (nobody cares).
    Owners of these cars love them, because people who buy a $10,000 car have low expectations. Mitsubishi meets all those low expectations and provides you with cheap long term ownership. But if you were driving a Prius and then buy this car to replace it, sure, you'll get the same mileage, but you will be unhappy with the lack of features and comfort. But I don't see anyone doing that except the bad reviewers.

      @100RentalCars  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Wow! First off, what a comment! Thanks for putting so much thought into this! Secondly, I totally agree with you. There's plenty to love about the Mirage. This is actually my second review of the 2017 model. In my first video I was much too critical. I just did get it...yet. But after driving it a second time I think I finally began to understand what makes the Mirage so unique. It really is a great little, budget friend, reliable hatchback. And if they ever make an electric model...well, I'd seriously consider buying it. Anyway, thanks again for the great comment. Cheers!

    • @shepdshepd4667
      @shepdshepd4667 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's a hard car to love. You have to get into the mindset of "What can I put up with to save money?". The Mirage isn't going to reward you with luxuries, that is for sure. And the ride isn't the best in the world. And the interior is so-so, at best. But if you're saving money, you just don't care about those things. You need the car to be simple (save on repairs), reliable (save on your time), safe (getting hurt in an accident is expensive!), cheap to run (fuel efficient/save on gas), and cheap to buy.
      I swear Mitsubishi went to their designers and said the car needs to seat 4 people and you need to meet those 5 goals. This car does that, and nothing else. And that's why I love it.
      Your review is balanced and frankly, I personally tell others this is a 1 star comfort car, and a 5 star cheap ass car. 2.5 stars seems like a legitimate split down the middle.

    You understood much better the essence of this car than many so called expert reviews. You can get a brand new one at a much lower price than MSRP.. something like 9 to 10k for the base manual which is crazy for a reliable car that takes you from A to B.

  • @AversaS2
    @AversaS2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    It's easy to dismiss a bare-bone, extremely cheaply made vehicle. But with how expensive cars are today, especially because of all the technology that goes into vehicles, there aren't many options for people on the end of the income spectrum or people that just need a car simply to get from point A to point B.
    For the average consumer, the Mirage won't even be considered when buying a vehicle. But for the certain market, there aren't many options. So, I won't attack this vehicle. It's there for a reason, and it serves it's purpose well.

  • @laffydaffy5133

    I'm going to say this just like everyone else has. Thank you for the review. Everyone is so negative to this car like Car and Driver magazine. All these people drive sport cars primarily so of course when they go to this car it's going to be a completely different ride. This is bare-bones basic and there is a Market for car is like this. Cars that do the most basic things and do it good. Daily commuting small towns and much more. I love the gas mileage and it goes fast enough. I currently drive a 2000 Corolla CE and this reminds me of it. New but still basic with a low cost is something I never see so this is awesome. You can either buy a new car with warranty for a cheap price like this or are used car from another company that's a few years old for a similar price which at that price range there will be competition, but I still love this car and honestly I've seen some used for like $4,500 and that blows my mind. I also have my eyes on the Prius C, but has a little too much technical stuff that I don't really care about besides the Eco Mode. This car seems to get pretty close gas mileage and it's only gas and much more simple. Both seem like lovely cars for simple driving but not for people with a Leadfoot that's for sure. It'd be cool to see you review the Prius c one day. Thanks for the review it was really nice to watch.

    • @100RentalCars
      @100RentalCars  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Rohy Thanks for the kind words! And you should totally check out the Prius C. I drive the C2 and absolutely love it. I get 70 mpg on my 27 mile commute to work. It's an amazing little car. Mines a little beat up, and 4 years old, so I won't do a full review, but I will try to post a short video about it soon.

    • @laffydaffy5133
      @laffydaffy5133 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      100 Rental Cars , yeah that would be cool. It's been awhile since I left my first post but I know you're busy and making that video about the Prius C I'm sure is at the bottom of the bucket list and I can't blame you. There's so many rental cars out there to keep making more videos, but by some chance you do end up making a video about the Prius C, please compare it to the Mitsubishi Mirage because one of the other is going to be the next car I get. I like the Simplicity of the Mirage and the fuel economy but the Prius gets even better fuel economy and is probably more of a comfortable ride. And when it comes to features the Prius C wins in that regard even though there is a Mitsubishi Mirage model with a backup camera, Android auto and Apple carplay which is fantastic. But in the end of the day as long as the car has cruise control that's almost all I need. It's a great feature to have in a car because I don't have to take my eyes off the road and I just hover my foot above the brake just in case something crazy happens my foot's already there to stop the car. But anyways just thought I'd leave this message out there. Hope you're doing well man and keep up the good work. Your videos are of top-notch quality and I consider them the best auto review videos on TH-cam bar none.

    I bought one of these after renting them a few times. I like it a lot. I bought a used 2017 for 8,000 back in 2019. I think it's a great car for city driving. All the maneuvers that you have to do become a breeze, like parallel parking, u turns, squeezing past people who are turning left and waiting for traffic etc. And it's easy to beat the rated mileage. I've gotten 53. 54 etc MPG on long interstate drives.

    I've got the 2014 Mirage hatch. They made some improvements for the 2017 models. As far as cars in general go, Mirage leaves a lot to be desired, BUT when you consider the low price and focus on the positive traits like low running costs, surprisingly comfortable front seats, good ergonomics, it's not the horrible pile most auto journalists claim it to be. It's an small, inexpensive car that's light on the wallet, but still offers some good comfort and features for the low price.

    I haven't had my "kiwi green" 2014 Mirage, affectionately called "Kermit", since Spring 2018, but I must say I do miss this car a lot. It was a fantastic city runabout, where this car excels. The ride is super soft, which is great for absorbing rough city streets. The fuel economy was good, though my current 2018 Elantra actually gets pretty darn near the same fuel economy around town and slightly better at 70mph, even though it's a significantly bigger and much more powerful car. I do miss the thrum of that 3cyl though, the ease of parking and maneuvering, the automatic climate control, and the handy hatchback body style. I used fit my 26" mountain bike in the back with the seat folded. If I could afford to buy a 2nd vehicle, I'd considering purchasing another new Mirage. Maybe this time with the manual trans.

    Mine only has 2 power windows in the front, & no power locks, or AC.
    It was the first car I purchased new, I admire the simplicity, I also like how when I pop the hood I see space in there for me to work on it, vs some newer cars.

    Everything seems like its been slightly refined and improved.

Anyway, thanks for the great comment. And if you do get a new car, let me know! I'd love to hear your thoughts! Merry Christmas!

    • @TheIdleCrow
      @TheIdleCrow 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh the Mirage is far from my first car, It's just my first "new" brand new car. I've owned many other older used cars!
      But yeah I admire the simplicity and in the big picture it's just less to go wrong!
      But I am also the fan of nice fully loaded luxury cars!
      If you wanna hear my 2 cents on a car I got very recently that is "new" to me. Is a 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer.
      I got mine for next to nothing as-is from a dealership my former employer works with. So I got it for what they gave the guy for it in trade in. plus dealer fees and tax. $1,500.
      Had only 105,000 miles I think the last owner sold it once the warranty ended one of those kinda people.
      Had the weld the rear end from some rust on the frame, and a passenger ball joint, and a small section of exhaust and its been great to me!
      This one is actually my daily driver my wife stole the Mirage from me because she liked it better then any of the other used cars I could find...
      But the Lancer is one of the best handling car's I've owned yet!
      I find that very impressive and its a joy to drive in that way.
      The suspension is more firm but not as firm as some car's I've been in. (not saying much)
      I wouldn't say it's the fastest car, but it gets around. (looks faster in appearance haha)
      I'm able to get 32 mpg on the highway when the car was only rated to get 28mpg. But that's more on the rural highways I drove it for abit over 70mph and I only got the suggested 28mpg.
      Mine is the middle package between base and the high end package.
      Mine has cruse control, heated front seats, aluminium rims with tire pressure censors. steering wheel audio controls, full powers windows and locks keyless entry, power mirrors. AC..... Maybe more? haha
      My bottom line view on the Lancer is its fun to drive around corners fast! I've driven many modern cars and older cars nothing I'd call a performance car mind you. but this one out handles them all!
      Plus the car just looks angry and its glaring at you.
      Doesn't matter if you look at it from the front or the rear!
      Mitsubishi stopped producing the Lancer as of this year this was the last model for it.
      Has no replacement....
      I think Mitsubishi is adjusting there focus on midsize SUV's & the Mirage economy car...
      I don't think there doing to well..... They might disappear from north America like Suzuki...
      Gee I gave you a story and my views on the car.... Sorry lol I like talking about cars as you can tell.
      Btw if you read this in time Merry Christmas as well!

    Drove one as a rental for an extended period. Overall, I was quite impressed for what is considered the lowest segment car out there. I've driven Honda Fits and Toyota Yaris' as well so I can compare them fairly. The Mirage is softly sprung, similar to the Yaris, while the Fit is much firmer and in many ways, too firm for pot-hole ridden roads. Noise levels in the Mirage is identical to the Fit, while the Yaris rides quieter. Engine noise is more pleasing in the Mirage than the Yaris, but not nearly in the same league as the Fit's engine. Fit is the fastest of the trio, with acceleration that only leaves you wanting more in the most demanding situations, while the Mirage you are constantly reminded there isn't much power under the hood (Yaris is about mid-pack). Fuel MPG is where the Mirage stands out though as it is way better than the Fit and Yaris, and those two are no gas guzzlers, mind you, but you can get into the 50's with the Mirage at steady highway speeds and city mileage is also very good.

    • @100RentalCars
      @100RentalCars  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I'm not really sure who this car is intended for. I mean, it gets great gas mileage and, from what I hear, it's super reliable. But the Fit and the Yaris have a lot better features. Or at least they do NOW. I've heard the Mirage is due for a nice refresh. Stick a decent touch screen in this, and maybe add some cruise control, and it might be getting close to the Fit? Maybe?

    I'm in the market for a new car. In Europe journalists tend to bash the mitsu. I really can't see why. It's Japanese reliability, has all the basic features one could want in this day and age (electric windows, air-conditioning and even cruise control if you want). We got an equally cheap car in the Dacia Sandero which journalists seem to love love love... Which in the basic version doesn't even get a head unit! Has no power windows, airco is an expensive option and if you want cruise-control? Well you can basically forget it because it isn't even on the options list. Oh and it's drinking fuel like it's water.
    I really don't get it...
    It all boils down to marketing

    • @matthewbanta3240

      I think the problem is that while the Mirage isn't a bad car, there are other cars that cost about the same or maybe less that are better. In the US, the Nissan Versa has a lower sticker price and is generally considered to be a better car. You can also get a Chevy Spark or a Kia Rio for about the same money and they are considered better too. Then again most Mitsubishi dealers tend to discount the Mirage so much that it starts flirting with being under $10k. I could see how some people would have trouble saying no to a car like this with a new car warranty for less than $10k.

      The little 3 cylinder is not powerful enough to be "touchy" mind you it will still get you where you need to go, and can still be zippy around the city, but you gotta push down on the peddle for that.
      The breaks are fine, there not touchy at all.

First, it wasn't clear to me if you have to leave the glove box open to use it? If so, that's insane. And it also looks like it won't last for the long haul. That cord is going to get worn out and break eventually. How hard would it have been to put it down by the DC port? I suspect that it was added just for US models, much like the backup camera that gets unceremoniously tacked on to the back since it's required in the US.

The Mirage has power windows, locks, AC, PS, ABS, Traction Control, Nice cloth seats, split fold rear seat, Tach, trip computer, 4 doors, etc. What can you get new for 10 grand?

      And for 2019, all Mirages also get cruise control, even the very base version with a manual.

      True.A base one from 2018 up has all that and keyless with alarm.Dont think nobody will ever steal one but who knows? Car jackers jacked a Volvo from a guy got halfway down the block and jacked a old woman's BMW. Wha?

    It's great for city / urban driving. Chevrolet Spark is better though.

      Spark handles better, faster, better looking, but Id trust the Mitsu for reliability over the Spark. Its also has more cargo space than the Spark. Both good cars though depending on your expectations.

    Worst car I have ever rented.I rented it because I was curious about how it drove. I had better results driving a Hyundai Elantra, Ford Focus, Nissan Versa, etc.

    • @100RentalCars
      @100RentalCars  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I agree that the Elantra, Focus, and Versa are all better cars. But I'm not sure the Mirage is a true apples-to-apples comparison. I mean, you can pick up a brand new Mirage for under 10k. It's a TRUE budget vehicle. I actually reviewed it twice. The first time I hated it. The second time I focused on the MSRP and discovered a lot of things I really liked about it: reliability, fuel economy, simplicity. Just to name a few. Anyway, that's my two cents. Thanks for the comment!

      @@TheCarCrazyGuy Yeah no thanks on the Versa considering their reliability ratings are atrocious. Complete opposite of the venerable Mirage, oh and they both use the same JATCO CVT7 transmission. Funny, I guess Nissan just cant get their programming right.

    This car is due for an oil change soon. They got one at 27,000 miles in MO. But at 33,000 miles they will probably get rid of this one soon. These cheap cars don't last long. These cars have such poor resale values.

    • @100RentalCars
      @100RentalCars  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand the poor resale value. I mean, you could just buy a brand new on for around 10k. Your monthly payment would you tiny!

      100 Rental Cars Yeah on this car as soon as you drive it off the lot you lose 45%-55% of the value. So this car is only worth about $5,000.

    • @disneyfan9099

      djkenny I meant trade it. Yeah they go for $8,000 but if you sell one to a dealer with 35,000 miles on it you will probably get about $5,000

    • @djkenny1202
      @djkenny1202 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Why? Trade it? You buy a car and drive it for a 100k or more to get any real value out of it. These are great cars to keep long term. Cheap to run. Should hold up over 100k easily with very cheap repairs to follow. I would not trade a car anyway if I wanted to get another one. The dealer gives so little. Always sell on the private market. Always. Unless it is a RPITA and you just can't drop it.
