  • This is a long video. It's a video that will never get a lot of views, and that is sad. 99% of folks have the ability to do 99% of the routine maintenance on their car or truck. But they don't. I hope that someone will watch this video and realize that they too can maintain their car with just a small investment in tools and time.
    If you own a Mirage, then this is a step by step for keeping on top of any issues that may come up, and as the years pass, I'll show the 20K and 40K CVT transmission services, tire replacement, brake replacement and tune up info.
    Stick around!

    I just bought my 2021 Mirage. It's an awesome car. Nice to see another dude likes small cars. I'm loving the gas mileage. I'm typically getting over 45 MPG average, sometimes a bit higher if it's mostly highway. Car drives good, it's comfortable. I hope I continue to love it.

      I’m on my second one. I’m planning on my 2022 being my last new car purchase. Going above & beyond in all areas to make it last on all fronts. After the couple in Minnesota traded one in with over 400k on it, that’s my benchmark. My rusty old Echo has 318k on it and I’m 100% sure it’ll go another 100k with proper maintenance.

    • @KekeeBlack
      @KekeeBlack 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@adriangoede7433 A Mirage lasted 400k? Did it have a CVT? I’m 75k deep on mine and hoping to get it over 200k without replacing the transmission.

    • @adriangoede7433
      @adriangoede7433 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@KekeeBlack Yes, I’m sure there’s more out there. If you just do a Google search for one with 414k when it was traded in, you’ll find it. It was a plasma purple hatchback traded into the same Mitsubishi dealership it was originally purchased at in Minnesota. I can’t remember if it was a CVT or a 5-Speed. I love my 2022 & I’m looking forward to racking up the miles on it. The one thing I plan to do sometime soon is to treat the body to prevent rust issues in the future. There’s a Mitsubishi Mirage/Space Star forum out there that is a wealth of knowledge. In fact, that’s what I’m basing my rust treatment on. There’s a thread on there from a gentleman in Canada who lives in a particularly bad area for rust & he detailed every place where they can start to go. Fortunately I live in Illinois & while we can get some nasty winters, I haven’t seen anything approaching what he’s experienced on his. Mirages in general seem to be pretty resistant to rust, at least where I live. Then again, I think they come with a 7 year warranty against perforation so, that helps.

    Great video! I own four of these Mirage's for my driving school. The ONLY reason I bought them is because of they are super simple to work on (I do all my own work), the climate controls are still actual buttons instead of on a screen, and the fact that they come with a spare tire! A rarity these days.

    About to buy onw of these for my 16 year-old son. I agree with your comment about car designers having to work as mechanics for two years. I built a 1965 Mustang over a two-year period as a new car. For the most part back then the engineers knew their poop. The screaming exception was in placement of the fuse panel. Unless you're a friggin Hobbit it's a major CF to get into it.

    I have a 2018 Mirage with 100,000 miles on it. I follow the regular maintenance schedule so I change the synthetic oil every 7,500 miles. The old oil never looks black or old. I believe changing it sooner if you're a conservative driver is unwarranted. This is a modern engine.

    Gotta say, I've been looking for a good and informational video for the Mirage and you did not disappoint. I'm 22 and got a used 2017 Mirage SE with 21.5k miles on it back in June of 2019 and so far the car has been great. It is a bit difficult to find good videos for it and so far I've managed to get by mainly because my father knows cars quite well and it's not exactly a difficult car to deal with. Just yesterday(March 26) I changed the shoes and it was much easier than I thought it would be. I spent about 35 minutes on the first one and only like 12 mins on the second one since I knew what to do already. Weirdly enough the shoes were rather worn out and it only had 31.7k miles on it at the time, and as far as I know those are it's original factory shoes it came with. You are right about the dealers though, I have 0 trust in them and would much rather spend more time doing it myself than paying someone an absurd amount of money for them to MAYBE do the job and even less likely do it well. My friends make fun of me for it and call me cheap but I always ask them how they know the dealer is actually doing what they paid them for. I've seen my dad have enough bad experiences with dealers to know better than to trust them with my vehicle. Even high end dealers sometimes can't get the job done correctly. In August of last year my dad took his GT3 RS in for a bit of light work and calibration. He always take pictures of just about everything so that if there's any damage whatsoever he can easily provide proof and have them fix it on their dime and not his. Well,long story short, he ended up having the dashboard replaced. When he went to go pick up the vehicle and began inspecting it, he noticed that the dashboard didn't fit correctly and it stuck out a bit near on the edges of the passenger and drivers side near the AC vents. When he told the parts manager he was told that because it wasn't the "original" dashboard that's how they all fit. He asked how that is since they're made to the specifications of that vehicle and why it wouldn't fit it as it should. They told him there was nothing they could do. He told them to take off the dashboard and to put the old one back on if they weren't going to do their jobs properly. He called corporate and let them know that that specific dealership was unwilling to do a job he had paid for properly. Within 15 minutes they were redoing the dashboard and what a miracle it was that suddenly the new dashboard was an exact fit. Funny enough though, I called pepboys before I changed the shoes on the drums and they wanted $350 just for just the labor which is more than twice what the shoes AND drums cost, like how ridiculous is that for something so easy. I figured that if they didn't charge too much I'd let them do it so I could enjoy my Friday night. Sorry for the long ramble. Really do appreciate you making this video though, will definitely help when I service it again.

    • @MrPapaHetfield
      @MrPapaHetfield 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you feel anything unusual with the drums when you were driving or e-braking or were you just checking the wears on it

    • @2334juan
      @2334juan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrPapaHetfield I didn’t feel anything weird for either, but I thought I might as well inspect them when I was changing my brake pads. I have a bit of a heavy foot so I’m usually going quite fast and braking rather hard do it does make some sense they would get worn out rather soon, but not to the point they’d have to be replaced... I think. I am going to check them once again at around the 5k mark to see how they’re doing that way I can determine whether it’s my driving style that caused them to waste away so quickly or if something is wrong with the drums.

    Wow. Thanks for this great video and channel for what looks like is going to be a great car for the money and for my transportational needs. The TH-cam algorithms recommended this video to me just today. Last month, I bought a new 2020 ES 5-speed for $11,820; $13.1K OTD; less the trade. I traded a 2017 6-speed manual Kia Soul, and believe it or not, this 78 hp manual Mirage has more drive-ability performance than that 130 peak hp Soul. I've now got a $93/month payment on a brand new car with few sacrifices. The Mirage represents an amazing price for any highway vehicle sold in America. Heck; we've got a UTV at work that cost us more than this car cost me; and we got the UTV at a lower price than a retail customer can get it. My first recorded mpg for a tank of gas, manually calculated, was 44.6 versus the lie-o-meter's 48.2. I'm using only top-tier gasoline to reduce long-term carbon build up on injectors.
    The manufacture date on my new car tells me it was already fourteen months old when I took delivery, so I'll probably do the first engine oil/filter change at 3K and then three times per year after that first one, which should put my changes at the 5,000-5,500 mile mark. I'll rarely exceed 65 mph in this car due to my rural commute route. I'll mostly be cruising 55-60 mph due to being on state routes; not interstates. However, my route has some fairly significant and long grades to climb daily. The closest dealer to me is an hour-and-a-half away, so I'll definitely being doing my on routine preventive maintenance. This video was perfect. I'm hitting the subscribe and like button right after this post. The ironic thing is that there is a truck load of new Chevy Spark's sitting at a car lot 5 miles from where I live that I could have picked up for about the same price, but the Spark, even though it has some advantages over Mirage, just didn't do it for me like the latter. To me, Mitsubishi put the design money towards the more important attributes that I need in a cheap and reliable commuter car. More utility space, more warranty and more mpg.

    • @FarpointFarms
      @FarpointFarms  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad I could help. I agree the Spark is just not a good car. I looked at them too, but I've also worked on many of them and they just don't hold up. That Mirage will last as long as you want it too as long as you keep up with it.

    Hi, I'm considering this car. A couple questions-- is the Marvel similar to adding Seafoam to oil? Do you know if Mitsubishi uses good sensor and solenoids? My last car has given me headache after headache due to bad solenoids and switches. Do you know if the manual transmission is a good option? And do you rustproof the underbody of your car, and if so what do you recommend? I've used a light coat of ACF50 on my motorbikes but it's a bit pricey. Thanks! Liked and subbed.

    • @FarpointFarms
      @FarpointFarms  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Marvel is way easier on the engine than seafoam when used in the recommended amount. It's a light cleaner that works in both oil and gas. As for the Mirage engine, it's a time tested engine. No major or minor issues to note. Many go nearly 100K with out a check engine light of any kind. I rust proofed mine (there is a video of it) and used rustolium professional undercoating. It's holding up well. I also painted the control arms and rear beam with a few coats of regular black paint to protect them a bit.n

I am a son of a car mechanic that has driven cars for 50 years until he was unable to anymore. Never we did anything more than was described in the service manual of any car we ever had. They all had some issues now and then, but we never had failing gearboxes, leaking radiators, or problematic oil consumption in the engine. It is unnecessary to do more oil changes than prescribed or put extra cleaning fluids in. Waste of time and money. Just do what the manufacturer says. Nothing more, nothing less.
