Big boss didn't send solid to kill venom, he sent solid to die. He didn't think solid would actually win, that's why in the last cutscene when venom turns the tape over it says operation intrude, that was the name of snake's op to take down outer heaven. Big boss was giving venom snake's objectives and info so venom was prepared to kill solid. Solid, surprisingly, won.

But from what we know he trained Solid Snake and then sent him to his death but Snake beat Venom to his surprise and then ran off to Zanzibar land. What i think what happened was that he found out that Solid had the recessive genes and Liquid was the superior twin of the two and figured he wasted his time with Solid in trying to make him into his own weapon when there was a better one out there.

Its not that Venom had disobeyed order from Big Boss that he sent Solid Snake to kill him. Actually, Big Boss created that Outer Haven, but because he is such a legendary, whatever he do the goverment would notice. So Big Boss returned to FoxHound and worked for govement and gave the control of Outer Haven to Venom Snake. When govement heard that Outer Haven was creating a Metal Gear, they want to attack. Big Boss instead want to send Fox Hound member to gather information before attack in order to buy Venom Snake more time to complete Metal Gear. 1st agent is Gray Fox and he was captured. Big Boss's plan seems to work until... Solid Snake ruined it all. Venom Snake and Big Boss were never gone bad. They were bad guys as how the govement see it. And its important to know that THE GOVEMENT IS COMPLETELY CONTROLLED BY THE PATRIOT (Cipher).

Snake was never supposed to succeed, he surprised big boss with his skill. To zero her message was one of a unified world, to big boss, it was a soldiers ability to forge his own path free of nations and ideologies that would turn once friends into enemies. Big Boss and Venom both had the same goal, a nation state with no loyalties but their own. Mother base and venom were merely a distraction, same with big boss forming foxhound and working with the U.S. his real goal the establishment of Zanzibar land, Outer Heaven/Haven. Naked Snakes downfall to evil arguably was in peacewalker, where an ai based off the boss committed suicide to save snake. Snake considering both the boss and himself as mere weapons, saw this as the ultimate betrayal of The boss's ideals. That is when he actually takes for himself the moniker of "Big Boss" and sets out on his own misinterpreted vision of the boss's future. Luckily for Big Boss, his biggest rival, also idolized and loved him, so zero, and subsequently the ai under zeros guidance did everything they could to protect and preserve not only the man, but the idea that was big boss, a legendary soldier. Because the power and influence of his "meme" were incredible and a source for manipulation. Metal Gear is an incredibly complex story, much like some Japanese anime. I would recommend to anyone who sees this comment to look up kefka productions. He does the series in movie form here on youtube, and watching in historical order and not just game release order will make things more clear.

Most members of Diamond Dogs on mother base are very fluent in more than one language, so communication could easily be established. Hideo Kojima clearly did not think this one through.

31:40 I think joe forgot about the cut thing at the end, throughout the whole game snake can't tell the difference between red and white when he takes damage or is having a mental break, and the enemy soldiers are wearing white hazmat suits, and eli is wearing a red one, essentially it fucks with your mind and makes you accidentally shoot him. That would be the exact kind of cool thing joe is talking about, except it got cut. There's also everything with Paz, which joe probably never found.

Kojima hasn't wanted to make a metal gear game since MGS2. And honestly, as a series veteran myself, the constant retcons and poor dialogue among other things are only forgivable because of the characters. Metal Gear could survive without Kojima.

I thought the ending was awesome when put together with one of the tapes (i think it was a tape anyway). Where you basically hear that it's Miller vs Ocelot. Miller goes and trains solid snake and ocelot works with liquid, each supporting a different big boss.
+Epik Nice Witcher 3 being the best open world game I've ever played was one of the most amazing experiences I've had with gaming. MGSV's open world stealth made it feel as if I was the one infiltrating a base. No limitations. And Fallout 4 looks so good. Bethesda never disappoints.
I don't think that Big Boss wanted Venom dead........I think that he expected Solid Snake to fail during "Operation Intrude N313" but that plan backfired on him and Venom ended up dead, Metal Gear TX-55 was destroyed and NATO ended up bombing Outer Heaven from the sky. There's NO WAY that Big Boss would have wanted to pay a price that high.....Outer Heaven was his dream that came to life so it wouldn't even make sense for him to want all that to occur. I also believe that the scene that takes after the end of mission 46 (when Venom is in front of the mirror playing the tape) takes place in 1984 and NOT 1995 like so many people keep saying....look at Venom as he appears during the campaign and then look at him as he appears during the mirror scene, he looks EXACTLY the same age....which means the scene takes place not too long after the end of the main storyline. This also reveals that the "Operation Intrude N313" on the reverse side of the tape means that Big Boss created that plan all the way back in 1984...11 years before the Outer Heaven uprising in 1995. My theory is that "Operation Intrude N313" was the beginning of a plan by Big Boss to eliminate the "Les Enfants Terribles" clones (listen to the "Truth Tapes" with him and Ocelot...he views the clones as abominations). Solid Snake was part of FOX-HOUND hence he would be the first that Big Boss would send to be eliminated but of course that plan failed....had he succeeded I believe he would have made his moves to eliminate Liquid and Solidus as well before finally moving on to combat Zero and The Patriots.
The fact that Delrith mentions that he has not played all the MGS games and that MGS 2 is the best tells me that he's skipped either 1 or 3, which, in my opinion are tie for perhaps the two greatest games of all time. 2 is good, but nowhere near the greatness that 1 and 3 have reached.

Once you actually get used to Raiden, 2 is mechanical masterpiece, gameplay superior to 1, story more complicated, only held back by Raiden if you don't like him, and it's hands down the BEST top-down view Metal Gear by far. MGS3's original release had the best story, but fuck me was the top down view awful. Gameplay originally sucked. the Subsistance release made MGS3 the best one retroactively.

The Two Big Boss situation is explained here. Kojima made the second Big Boss/Venom Snake/Punished snake the paramedic etc. That character was You, me, us. Everyone that has gone through all of the metal gear solid Saga, that has endured everything together, it's his way of breaking down the 4th wall and basically saying, YOU ARE Big Boss. You have had to endure just as much as him as a character, we have all grown together with the series for so many years, that as a farewell, we were all in this game as the lead protagonist Venom Snake. Which explains the ending where Venom Snake looks into the mirror and his face keeps changing from Venom Snake, to the Avatar you created at the beginning of the game. I Loved the ending, especially as Venom Snake walks into the Outer Heaven base. it would have been made that much better had Kojima been given the time to actually finish his story.

Here's a TL;DR warning ahead of time. But coming from a die hard MGS fan The cut content from this game is the biggest issue. Mission 51, chapter 3, was supposed to have it's own open world area. Honestly Other than that, it's fucking great. The main issue a lot of hardcore fans are having is that you didn't play as BB(Big Boss) at all and they feel that they were "conned" out of learning about how Big Boss becomes a terrorist... but... really... We see the Demon that was Venom Snake. That Phantom of BB. Now I get it, people want to see why BIG BOSS turns into a villain, but that wasn't the point of this game. The Zanzibar events happen 11 years after the events that take place in this game, so really timeline wise, those questions would never have been answered at that point in time. But yeah, we should still see what happens there, but never did Konami or Kojima say that was going to be part of this game. Really though overall. The story is really well done and links as to how the original MG games make sense (bar why BB goes crazy and wants to kill everyone). But really... We can just assume he naturally goes a bit looney with all his power and tries to "accomplish" the Boss's dream (like Zero and Big Skull try to do) I loved skull face because GZ and the tapes in both games talk alot about him and the delivery from the voice actor is fucking excellent.The story, all the characters it all was great imo. Were there things I wish they touched on like Grey fox and things like that? Maybe But lets be honest. It's still a fantastic fucking game. 4 things to end on. Look up Moby dick comparison with MGSV and see how there's a potential reason as to why content was cut (still bullshit tho) The man who sold the world, the song, effectively tells you the tale of the game. Everyone's avatar in the armor menu is their chest, so.. just saying If you were in the ACC at night and pressed R3 in to zoom in on the helicopter window. Your reflection was your avatar, rather than Big Boss... Really cool touch everyone probably overlooked!
***** Yeah man, it doesn't take too much thought to think he just went a bit mad with his power and wanted revenge for what happened to the Boss. And possibly losing Venom helped pushed him over the edge, seeing how he was one of his best soldiers, lieutenants and overall people from what MGSV suggests. To be honest, none of the games that came after MGS3 had to be made. It would've been fine to just assume at the end of MGS3, BB ends up sulking and wallowing in anger over having been used to kill The Boss, and 30 years later he had just been building an arming and gathering nukes to one day get his vengeance. Me personally, that was good enough, but unlike most people I can actually think for myself (like kojima always intended). Just amazing to see fans complain about MGS4, V and Peace walker story wise, when in reality they were never meant to exist. But because of fans stubbornness, these games were almost in a way forced to be made to "answer" questions. All in all, I love all the games in the series, and I love what phantom pain does to get them to link together (bar the missing content Konami took out and will probably sell to us later)
But we already know why Big Boss started Zanzibar Land. he fucking decided to leave the Patriots right before PO and didn't get the chance to until he was given an opportunity with an actual body double that Zero basically let him make. Venom Snake wasn't supposed to lose to Solid Snake in Outer Heaven, if Big Boss really wanted to kill Venom he wouldn't have given Solid Snake misinformation half way through Metal Gear 1, or would have recruited Liquid Snake to Foxhound (who is implied to be the superior clone by Ocelot after the credits of Twin Snakes)

JOE! Please i'm a die hard Metal gear Fan, Please play them in time order - 3, Peace Walker, 1, 2, 4. And do a review for each. Although a decade late, i would like to see how you rate them now. All games can be purchased on the Legendary MGS Game. Oh! And MGS 3 is the Best. Big Boss Didn't send Solid into to Kill double Big Boss, it was about Destroying the Metal Gear. The original Bigboss sent solid into the Zanzibarland to essentially get him killed. The original Big boss is panicing when solid snake was beating all the challenges set to him, leading him into traps etc. Venom Snake and Naked Snake are Friends.
Dont care about movies, I would always recommend watching or playing anything in time order, not release order so story details can be referenced easily.

yeah the hardest part in that game for me was when you had to put down your own men, and one of them says "Lets let Boss decide". Man that really got me unlike any other game, and follow that with the speech he made at the funeral scene after. Oh the feels
BS; since he never played the games before. Solid's first mission is not to kill anybody, but FIND OUT what "metal gear" means and rescue Foxhound operative Gray Fox who was captured in outer heaven. He ONLY has to kill Big Boss in the first game because he turns out to be the master mind behind Metal Gear. For fuck's sake Joe, if you are going to do "research" do it well. Nobody's asking you to play a 25 year old game in an emulator; but the story is well laid out even in MGS1 back chapters.

It's explained in one of the casette tapes that Quiet needs to have little outfit because the parasites covered her whole body, functioning as her skin, lungs and other organs that Big Boss/Naked Snake burned in the hospital. The End had similar powers but that was way before Code Talker transformed the parasites into more powerful ones. Yes, the angles they took on Quiet were very sexual, but the reason she doesn't have much clothing is perfectly fine and showed on the first 10 minutes of the game

paranidherc Did you played MGSV? Both Code talker AND Ocelot explained that. She has multiple strain of parasites, one of these absorbs the water through her skin, just enough not to drown her. These parasites thrive in water, thus the scene where she's "dancing" and playing with Venom in the rain. Instead of hating on the character, pay attention to the story.
+paranidherc The hating and tormenting is what the male characters also go through in the games most of the time. Yes the designs might be a little over the top but they are treated as humans not really bound by gender. It's called making a character. A good character has some bad experiences to build them upon, this applies to nearly every character in the series, not just men are hurt in real life, everyone's hurt.
22:25 It should be noted, however, that the XOF uniform is an option for Quiet. If you keep her around and raise her buddy status you can unlock it, rendering whether or not she's in that outfit down to player choice. (Except certain cutscenes, of course.) Also, she disappears if you don't use the butterfly emblem so there's that.
Jr Johnson It was just starting to get on my nerves that that wasn't acknowledged when talking about Quiet's presence in this game, I'm always an advocate for informing people they have a choice, and I feel like Joe should have at least mentioned it.

Simple. The people who bitch about it being a movie is not the same people who bitch about it having very little cutscene. People are not hive-minded. I like the long cutscenes and never complained about it. As such, I am disappointed with the lack of cutscene in MGS5.

And Ocelot is a fun villain and an awesome character, but in this game he is SO bland, he doesn't have a personality at all and i really hated that
+TheTUGAfreak You see the respect and the roots of their friendship at the end of 3. Ocelot invites Big Boss into Cipher (in Portable Ops..which is canon BTW) and their friendship grows further during their time in Cipher, partially due to them sharing the same opinion of Zero and his ideals prior to Peace Walker.
They need to let other developers use this engine, it has so much damn potential and to just let it go would be a travesty. Sell it, outsource it, SOMETHING!
@Tiredofdumbfuks MGS 5 ran on my old setup (HD7870, FX6300) with constant 60fps with almost maxed settings when I couldn't reach even a stable 30fps on Witcher 3 with low settings...there are games that look better, yes, but the stability to visuals ratio is unmatched. You chose to cry over the faces when they are literally the only visual aspect in the game that isn't superb (still not as bad as you describe them). And also you compare a game that runs on PS3 and Xbox360 with one of the best looking games *that hasn't even been released yet* Please be a little more self reflective before choosing a username next time...being a hypocrite is one thing, but you probably chose one of the stupidest ways of being one by calling yourself that and making such a dumb statement
I agree, too intrusive, it's hard to level your mother base without an FOB, but the FOB is repetitive and constantly attacked, it's a pain in the ass (I heard you can be attacked when your offline) that makes mother base feel like a baby sitter mini game, rather than an extension of boss' tactical ability
Sinx I agree, it should have been more like the opening Mission 22, where you can fight and eliminate competing AI PMCs and they can fight yours. Despite the level of AI in MGSV, a Skilled Human player will almost always win when your not around, so it feels compulsory to protect against raids yourself. If they needed an Aysmmetrical CO-OP mode, they could have made it like a kind of Base Defense for separate PMCs, or a co-op thing against the AI PMCs. Some will disagree with that, but its just what I thought would have worked better.

Venom Snake never betrayed Big Boss. Notice the part with the Operation Intrude N313 cassette tape? There was a time jump there in the scene, when Venom flips the cassette, it was already 1995 and Diamond Dog was absorbed into Outer Heaven. That tape was Big Boss telling Venom Snake about Solid Snake's mission, so that Venom Snake could kill Solid Snake, who is a Foxhound member and is indirectly working for Cipher. Big Boss pretends to join Cipher by commanding the Foxhound unit, so that he can direct Cipher's attention away from the ever expanding Outer Heaven in South Africa. (Which Big Boss was building the foundation of during the course of this game) When Cipher still found out about Outer Heaven anyway, Big Boss first sent Gray Fox (I guess to warn Venom Snake), then he sent in the rookie Solid Snake, expecting him to fail. And the rest is Metal Gear history.

It's tiring trying to explain to people how MGS V doesn't contradict the MSX games, but rather leads nicely into them and the rest of the storyline. For all of you that wonder how BB(BigBoss) became evil. Yeah BigBoss not venom snake. He wanted to create a world where soldiers make their own decisions and not the politicians. (He thought that , that was The Boss' will). By doing so he nearly destroyed the world along side with Zero (that also wanted to carry The Boss' will). BigBoss finally understood The Boss' "will" while he was about to die (MGS4) and he tried to pass it on solid snake. Well there it goes. Hope that helped !
Funny thing is solid snake was already following the boss' will and he didn't even know her. Solid was the boss' true successor. Big boss acknowledges did saying had it been you (solid) in my place you would have done things differently
I wouldn't say I hate him. He's just a non screen presence. He lacks any form of charisma, and from my POV is kind of a bore to watch. You can also tell when he tries to be funny and it comes of as forced and falls incredibly flat (For me).
Its not really implied that quiet died, if anything her fate is left to you to decide for yourself what happened to her. Until we find out in a future story, hopefully at least.
If they do try to capitalise of MGS, they'll make another game which could potentially have her in it. Wouldn't go any further than speculating but I wouldn't put it past them to continue it on like the guys were discussing in the video because at the end of they day, Konami does want money, but yea it's a long shot. In regards to quiet; the more I think about it in terms of her capabilities and the condition of the English parasite, she very likely survived. At least, she survived the parasite. God knows what could happen to her after that.
+PaNc4kePants I suspect Chapter 3 as DLC in a couple of months. If that happens it should solidify that Quiet is fine because the she has no lungs for the parasites to actually attack. The only risk for Quiet is spreading the parasites to other people, hence, she left.
From best to least good, IMO of course (they are all great games): MGS 3 (best story, best characters, almost best at everything) MGS V (best gameplay by far) MGS PW (a smaller version of MGS V) MGS 4 (the most epic) MGS (great story but gameplay doesn't hold up) MGS 2 (better gameplay than MGS but story is not so good, Raiden? Really?)
Personally, I didn't mind the twin snakes mainly because of the graphics upgrade. Some of the cutscenes didn't belong (jumping on a missile?! Really?!), but if I were to replay the series, I would use twin snakes mainly because the original solid's graphics are horribly dated.

Code Talker also has photosynthesis and has no problem not eating, Quiet needs her skin to breathe, so her suit only needs to be super well ventilated, so the XOF uniform could work if it was modified somehow.
Man this series is my favourite game series ever, it does make me sad that nobody on this panel has really played the master piece that is 3 or even the original. Hell two is way too good for these guys to have missed. big boss sent solid snake to out heaven to keep his cover up. he also thought that snake would fail. the is why he started to give miss information to snake in the game. venom snake was doing every thing he was supposed to do.

My theory is that the real Big Boss was assisting him initially, then it switched over to Venom Snake, who was closer to all the action, trying to force Solid to fail. Overall, Venom Snake followed his orders to the end..to be a decoy for the real Big Boss, even letting the world think he was dead after Operation Intrude.

I actually put my name and wasted to much time trying to make the avatar look like me (I did try but I'm not good with character creators) But the reveal hit me like a truck. This was the only Metal Gear I have played(I'm not good with older graphics) so I was mind blown. And I don't think you were only a paramedic in that Helicopter. In the game there are a few soldiers who have really good stats across the board. So I wouldn't be surprised of a soldier who could perform surgery in an emergency situation. Also you were referred as one of the best BB's soldiers. So you are not a random medic At least that's how I see it
They are incorrect about the psycho mantis controller 2 fight thing...the solution of putting your controller in port 2 is not hinted at on the back of the CD case (on the back of the CD case is Meryl's CODEC frequency 140.15). The controller port 2 trick is slowly conveyed to you by the Colonel via repeated CODEC calls.

But what you don't understand is that the vast majority of those people who are listed in the credits are his handpicked staff from Kojima Productions. They are all people who were managed by him directly and who were effectively extensions of his will. The way that Kojipro is ran is almost like a construction crew with Kojima as the foreman, he had/has his eyes and ears on, and direct control of, everything that happened in the process. They have made Metal Gear games without Kojima in the past, Portable Ops, Acid, the NES versions of the original 2 Metal Gear games, and they have been the least successful games in the franchise for good reason. Fact of the matter is that anyone can create the various parts that make Metal Gear what it is, but only Hideo Kojima can find the balance and nuance necessary to elevate the games to be far greater than the sum of their parts.

Zevran08 Actually Rising had plenty to do with Kojima and had been under development by Kojima productions for years until they decided to hedge their bets and hand over rights to Platinum whom he felt would be able to do it justice. He also ended up being very frustrated with them during certain aspects of it's development but was still quite pleased with the final product despite being a little irritated with Platinum and their lack of ability to really keep deadlines (hypocritical a bit lol). And technically Rising is now considered part of the official Canon. :) The plot was lighthearted, but I wouldn't consider it bad, it just lacked the same level of emotion that the other games have. Wow, so much hate for the bearded guy. I loved the game and I was fine with the boobs. It was a Japanese game, which is pretty much going to do that. I just graze over it. About the story, I was disappointed with the ending. I know the Sahalanthropus (spelling) was stolen and nothing happened, I thought my game was broken. I wanted more to the story, I wanted hints at Solid Snake not just Liquid. I would have liked to seen Hal, Huey's son too.

+Rogue Warrior MGS2 was the black sheep at the time of its release due to Raiden, but it's been looked upon quite favorably after a few years when more people understood the story and the necessity of bringing in a rookie for the story. It was also quite groundbreaking in terms of graphics and attention to detail when it was released in 2001.

I think Bethesda games need to have a feature where if you have big weaponry or strong armor people avoid fighting you or you get unique intimidated dialogue options (instead of pointless comments from raiders). It feels hilarious when Kellogg acts so tough to me (in full X-01 Mark VI power armor with a max-spec gauss rifle) and I kill him in one shot. It’s a big oversight and another area where Fallout 4 lacked depth.

+RealShaun MGSV costed ~83$ millions to develop at the time of release. The Witcher 3 costed 34$ millions. Comparing two of the best games of the year, I can see where you're coming from. However, The Witcher 3 was extremely efficient. Other AAA games can cost upward 100$ Million or above. GTAV costed 265$ Millions, Destiny costed 500$ millions, for example. So you see, for a game in development for 5 years, MGSV was still very efficient compared to some other games. Now if it's still worth it for them to finish the game, I would say yes, you may still say no. But if I look at these numbers, I'd say "Yes, they probably can still make it"

Half the game was left out, so I think it's horribly disappointing. Even so, the game was amazing. It's just that it could have been a LOT better if they had all the stuff that was cut out, and they cut out the fluff (like the repeated missions) As for Quiet, she's the most blatant fanservice since Dead or Alive Extreme 2, and yet she was actually the most interesting character in the game. I don't mean because of the sexy stuff, but because of the story that was told in large part without words, pardon the pun.
You guys forgot something. The vocal cord parasites are STILL activated with your accent, regardless of language. They will detect the way you talk and base it off a location or an area where the accent is present. It is unreasonable, BUT it's a metal gear game and this is a good enough explanation to me. tbh if you think about it the real Big boss caused most of the events in phantom pain. 1.he burned quiet to a crisp at the beginning(I understand it's self defense) he got her burned so badly it caused skull face to put the parasites in her body. which lead to quiets death. 2. big boss and ocelot decived everyone and made the world think that the medic was bigboss even the medic was fooled and became bigboss himself. he even left his best freind Kaz to die at the hands of the soviets. if it wasn't for venom snake kaz would have died in the outpost you save him in. 3. bigboss decived your playable charecter and you trough out the whole game as you did his dirty work and killed skull face. it causes the medic to lose his personality and make you feel so guilty and pissed at him. case simply the real bigboss is the most evil master mind in mgs

Joe, they actually do own up to her objectification, super hard. Get the "Boss, you stink" cutscene when you have a high relationship with Quiet and you get a shower scene in 1st person with her. Look in the background and DD soldiers are checking her out. I laughed my ass off the whole time. There might have been a more involved storyline with Quiet that was cut along with Chapter 3. Granted, it's way less veiled than Eva, Boss, Sniper Wolf, or Meryl; however, play Peace walker and examine Strangelove or Paz, and not only are they the only ones who have viewable 3D models, their boobs jiggle. I think Kojima's a 15 year old at heart, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's actually really funny. Just look at Raiden or Snake in MGS1-4. Ass shots, dick jokes, shirtless torture scenes. No-one complains about those and says it's insensitive or objectifying. It seems a little hypocritic for a series where stuff like this has a history. In a way, Quiet sorta owns up to herself by being so thinly veiled. "What, you expected classy female? Doesn't that mean.... *boobs*?" They could have done it a little better, but what's done is done. I want my chapter 3.... Mr. Kojima, hath thee forsaken us?

It's like, they go out of their way to sexualize her, and then sort of tack on these, "Oh, yeah, feel guilty about this" moments. It's really hamfisted and poorly handled. I mean, Quiet is a great character. Hell, she could probably be one of the greatest character's in the franchise. We could be discussing her character arc in great detail right now, but what we are talking about is how she's portrayed. You didn't have to replay the Chapter 1 missions. I skipped most of those and still did Missions 45 and 46. That being said... It was pretty lame that there was only actually 6 new main missions in Chapter 2 even though some of the Side Ops were story missions.

chiffmonkey I know. It's depressing. What I really enjoyed about the MGS series is that it seems like a legit Western game, then it blindsides you with the most Japanese tropes ever.
Watching this 5 years later, I played MGS5 TPP when it was first released. I loved it, just like I'd loved all the MGS games. To me, they're great in spite of their stories, to say they're overly convoluted is a massive understatement. I've played them all several times, I quit even trying to keep up with the story long ago. It's probably my favorite video game series ever, except perhaps the GTA series. I know GTA is the popular, easy choice for favorite series, but that doesn't take away from how good it is. My point is, the MGS series is one of the best ever, in spite of convoluted stories in each game. It requires some of the best gameplay ever from a game series to rank among the best ever when it's story is a detriment.
SPOILER ALERT - I always suspected from the beginning there was the (very slight) possibility that Ishmael might've been Big Boss simply because he too was played by Keifer Sutherland. From that standpoint though, it just seemed like a hugely wild theory, which isn't unheard of in Kojima's world..!

Joe, play MGS4. Solid Snake's ending also explains Big Boss' story. I haven't played MGS5 yet, but I think I'd lean towards your point of view regarding the circular themes in the games, as it is pretty obvious that these games are really interconnected and another game covering what happens between Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake seems like the way to go to further explain the real Big Boss arc.

Believe it or not, if you guess that the similarity between all the infected soldiers is that language (escapes me at the moment) and quarantine every staff member that speaks the language, you actually skip that whole kill your own soldiers mission and are congratulated for containing the outbreak

He didn't think solid would actually win, that's why in the last cutscene when venom turns the tape over it says operation intrude, that was the name of snake's op to take down outer heaven. Big boss was giving venom snake's objectives and info so venom was prepared to kill solid. Solid, surprisingly, won.

Not sure. Would have to be explained in another game. But from what we know he trained Solid Snake and then sent him to his death but Snake beat Venom to his surprise and then ran off to Zanzibar land.
What i think what happened was that he found out that Solid had the recessive genes and Liquid was the superior twin of the two and figured he wasted his time with Solid in trying to make him into his own weapon when there was a better one out there.

Its not that Venom had disobeyed order from Big Boss that he sent Solid Snake to kill him. Actually, Big Boss created that Outer Haven, but because he is such a legendary, whatever he do the goverment would notice. So Big Boss returned to FoxHound and worked for govement and gave the control of Outer Haven to Venom Snake. When govement heard that Outer Haven was creating a Metal Gear, they want to attack. Big Boss instead want to send Fox Hound member to gather information before attack in order to buy Venom Snake more time to complete Metal Gear. 1st agent is Gray Fox and he was captured. Big Boss's plan seems to work until... Solid Snake ruined it all. Venom Snake and Big Boss were never gone bad. They were bad guys as how the govement see it. And its important to know that THE GOVEMENT IS COMPLETELY CONTROLLED BY THE PATRIOT (Cipher).

The entire story of metal gear, and subsequently metal gear solid, is a disagreement between two friends over the meaning of the last words of someone they both idolized, the boss. To zero her message was one of a unified world, to big boss, it was a soldiers ability to forge his own path free of nations and ideologies that would turn once friends into enemies.
Big Boss and Venom both had the same goal, a nation state with no loyalties but their own. Mother base and venom were merely a distraction, same with big boss forming foxhound and working with the U.S. his real goal the establishment of Zanzibar land, Outer Heaven/Haven.
Naked Snakes downfall to evil arguably was in peacewalker, where an ai based off the boss committed suicide to save snake. Snake considering both the boss and himself as mere weapons, saw this as the ultimate betrayal of The boss's ideals. That is when he actually takes for himself the moniker of "Big Boss" and sets out on his own misinterpreted vision of the boss's future.
Luckily for Big Boss, his biggest rival, also idolized and loved him, so zero, and subsequently the ai under zeros guidance did everything they could to protect and preserve not only the man, but the idea that was big boss, a legendary soldier. Because the power and influence of his "meme" were incredible and a source for manipulation.
Metal Gear is an incredibly complex story, much like some Japanese anime. I would recommend to anyone who sees this comment to look up kefka productions. He does the series in movie form here on youtube, and watching in historical order and not just game release order will make things more clear.

Additionally she only had the English Strain of the Vocal Cord Parasites, if she wanted to communicate she could easily do so in any other language. Most members of Diamond Dogs on mother base are very fluent in more than one language, so communication could easily be established. Hideo Kojima clearly did not think this one through.

I thought the ending was awesome when put together with one of the tapes (i think it was a tape anyway). Where you basically hear that it's Miller vs Ocelot. Miller goes and trains solid snake and ocelot works with liquid, each supporting a different big boss.
The Witcher 3, Fallout 4, and MGSV are definitely going to be the best games of the year.

I don't think that Big Boss wanted Venom dead........I think that he expected Solid Snake to fail during "Operation Intrude N313" but that plan backfired on him and Venom ended up dead, Metal Gear TX-55 was destroyed and NATO ended up bombing Outer Heaven from the sky. There's NO WAY that Big Boss would have wanted to pay a price that high.....Outer Heaven was his dream that came to life so it wouldn't even make sense for him to want all that to occur. I also believe that the scene that takes after the end of mission 46 (when Venom is in front of the mirror playing the tape) takes place in 1984 and NOT 1995 like so many people keep saying....look at Venom as he appears during the campaign and then look at him as he appears during the mirror scene, he looks EXACTLY the same age....which means the scene takes place not too long after the end of the main storyline.
This also reveals that the "Operation Intrude N313" on the reverse side of the tape means that Big Boss created that plan all the way back in 1984...11 years before the Outer Heaven uprising in 1995. My theory is that "Operation Intrude N313" was the beginning of a plan by Big Boss to eliminate the "Les Enfants Terribles" clones (listen to the "Truth Tapes" with him and Ocelot...he views the clones as abominations). Solid Snake was part of FOX-HOUND hence he would be the first that Big Boss would send to be eliminated but of course that plan failed....had he succeeded I believe he would have made his moves to eliminate Liquid and Solidus as well before finally moving on to combat Zero and The Patriots.
The fact that Delrith mentions that he has not played all the MGS games and that MGS 2 is the best tells me that he's skipped either 1 or 3, which, in my opinion are tie for perhaps the two greatest games of all time. 2 is good, but nowhere near the greatness that 1 and 3 have reached.

The Two Big Boss situation is explained here. Kojima made the second Big Boss/Venom Snake/Punished snake the paramedic etc. That character was You, me, us. Everyone that has gone through all of the metal gear solid Saga, that has endured everything together, it's his way of breaking down the 4th wall and basically saying, YOU ARE Big Boss. You have had to endure just as much as him as a character, we have all grown together with the series for so many years, that as a farewell, we were all in this game as the lead protagonist Venom Snake. Which explains the ending where Venom Snake looks into the mirror and his face keeps changing from Venom Snake, to the Avatar you created at the beginning of the game. I Loved the ending, especially as Venom Snake walks into the Outer Heaven base. it would have been made that much better had Kojima been given the time to actually finish his story.

The cut content from this game is the biggest issue. Mission 51, chapter 3, was supposed to have it's own open world area. Honestly Other than that, it's fucking great.
The main issue a lot of hardcore fans are having is that you didn't play as BB(Big Boss) at all and they feel that they were "conned" out of learning about how Big Boss becomes a terrorist... but... really... We see the Demon that was Venom Snake. That Phantom of BB. Now I get it, people want to see why BIG BOSS turns into a villain, but that wasn't the point of this game. The Zanzibar events happen 11 years after the events that take place in this game, so really timeline wise, those questions would never have been answered at that point in time. But yeah, we should still see what happens there, but never did Konami or Kojima say that was going to be part of this game.
Really though overall. The story is really well done and links as to how the original MG games make sense (bar why BB goes crazy and wants to kill everyone). But really... We can just assume he naturally goes a bit looney with all his power and tries to "accomplish" the Boss's dream (like Zero and Big Skull try to do) I loved skull face because GZ and the tapes in both games talk alot about him and the delivery from the voice actor is fucking excellent.The story, all the characters it all was great imo. Were there things I wish they touched on like Grey fox and things like that? Maybe
But lets be honest. It's still a fantastic fucking game.

***** Yeah man, it doesn't take too much thought to think he just went a bit mad with his power and wanted revenge for what happened to the Boss. And possibly losing Venom helped pushed him over the edge, seeing how he was one of his best soldiers, lieutenants and overall people from what MGSV suggests.
To be honest, none of the games that came after MGS3 had to be made. It would've been fine to just assume at the end of MGS3, BB ends up sulking and wallowing in anger over having been used to kill The Boss, and 30 years later he had just been building an arming and gathering nukes to one day get his vengeance. Me personally, that was good enough, but unlike most people I can actually think for myself (like kojima always intended). Just amazing to see fans complain about MGS4, V and Peace walker story wise, when in reality they were never meant to exist. But because of fans stubbornness, these games were almost in a way forced to be made to "answer" questions.
All in all, I love all the games in the series, and I love what phantom pain does to get them to link together (bar the missing content Konami took out and will probably sell to us later)

Big Boss Didn't send Solid into to Kill double Big Boss, it was about Destroying the Metal Gear. The original Bigboss sent solid into the Zanzibarland to essentially get him killed. The original Big boss is panicing when solid snake was beating all the challenges set to him, leading him into traps etc. Venom Snake and Naked Snake are Friends.
I respectfully disagree, as playing them in release order will make no sense, story wise, for a new player.
Dont care about movies, I would always recommend watching or playing anything in time order, not release order so story details can be referenced easily.

I can't remember when, but you DO get it.
It's explained in one of the casette tapes that Quiet needs to have little outfit because the parasites covered her whole body, functioning as her skin, lungs and other organs that Big Boss/Naked Snake burned in the hospital. The End had similar powers but that was way before Code Talker transformed the parasites into more powerful ones. Yes, the angles they took on Quiet were very sexual, but the reason she doesn't have much clothing is perfectly fine and showed on the first 10 minutes of the game

paranidherc Did you played MGSV? Both Code talker AND Ocelot explained that. She has multiple strain of parasites, one of these absorbs the water through her skin, just enough not to drown her. These parasites thrive in water, thus the scene where she's "dancing" and playing with Venom in the rain. Instead of hating on the character, pay attention to the story.

Yes the designs might be a little over the top but they are treated as humans not really bound by gender. It's called making a character. A good character has some bad experiences to build them upon, this applies to nearly every character in the series, not just men are hurt in real life, everyone's hurt.

@Tiredofdumbfuks MGS 5 ran on my old setup (HD7870, FX6300) with constant 60fps with almost maxed settings when I couldn't reach even a stable 30fps on Witcher 3 with low settings...there are games that look better, yes, but the stability to visuals ratio is unmatched. You chose to cry over the faces when they are literally the only visual aspect in the game that isn't superb (still not as bad as you describe them). And also you compare a game that runs on PS3 and Xbox360 with one of the best looking games *that hasn't even been released yet*

I agree, too intrusive, it's hard to level your mother base without an FOB, but the FOB is repetitive and constantly attacked, it's a pain in the ass (I heard you can be attacked when your offline) that makes mother base feel like a baby sitter mini game, rather than an extension of boss' tactical ability

Sinx I agree, it should have been more like the opening Mission 22, where you can fight and eliminate competing AI PMCs and they can fight yours.
Despite the level of AI in MGSV, a Skilled Human player will almost always win when your not around, so it feels compulsory to protect against raids yourself.
If they needed an Aysmmetrical CO-OP mode, they could have made it like a kind of Base Defense for separate PMCs, or a co-op thing against the AI PMCs.
Some will disagree with that, but its just what I thought would have worked better.

Venom Snake never betrayed Big Boss. Notice the part with the Operation Intrude N313 cassette tape? There was a time jump there in the scene, when Venom flips the cassette, it was already 1995 and Diamond Dog was absorbed into Outer Heaven.
That tape was Big Boss telling Venom Snake about Solid Snake's mission, so that Venom Snake could kill Solid Snake, who is a Foxhound member and is indirectly working for Cipher.
Big Boss pretends to join Cipher by commanding the Foxhound unit, so that he can direct Cipher's attention away from the ever expanding Outer Heaven in South Africa. (Which Big Boss was building the foundation of during the course of this game)
When Cipher still found out about Outer Heaven anyway, Big Boss first sent Gray Fox (I guess to warn Venom Snake), then he sent in the rookie Solid Snake, expecting him to fail.
And the rest is Metal Gear history.

BigBoss finally understood The Boss' "will" while he was about to die (MGS4) and he tried to pass it on solid snake. Well there it goes. Hope that helped !

If they do try to capitalise of MGS, they'll make another game which could potentially have her in it. Wouldn't go any further than speculating but I wouldn't put it past them to continue it on like the guys were discussing in the video because at the end of they day, Konami does want money, but yea it's a long shot. In regards to quiet; the more I think about it in terms of her capabilities and the condition of the English parasite, she very likely survived. At least, she survived the parasite. God knows what could happen to her after that.
+PaNc4kePants I suspect Chapter 3 as DLC in a couple of months. If that happens it should solidify that Quiet is fine because the she has no lungs for the parasites to actually attack. The only risk for Quiet is spreading the parasites to other people, hence, she left.

Personally, I didn't mind the twin snakes mainly because of the graphics upgrade. Some of the cutscenes didn't belong (jumping on a missile?! Really?!), but if I were to replay the series, I would use twin snakes mainly because the original solid's graphics are horribly dated.

My theory is that the real Big Boss was assisting him initially, then it switched over to Venom Snake, who was closer to all the action, trying to force Solid to fail. +AngryJoeShow I know why you would say you think they could continue without Kojima. But what you don't understand is that the vast majority of those people who are listed in the credits are his handpicked staff from Kojima Productions. They are all people who were managed by him directly and who were effectively extensions of his will. The way that Kojipro is ran is almost like a construction crew with Kojima as the foreman, he had/has his eyes and ears on, and direct control of, everything that happened in the process. They have made Metal Gear games without Kojima in the past, Portable Ops, Acid, the NES versions of the original 2 Metal Gear games, and they have been the least successful games in the franchise for good reason. Fact of the matter is that anyone can create the various parts that make Metal Gear what it is, but only Hideo Kojima can find the balance and nuance necessary to elevate the games to be far greater than the sum of their parts.

Zevran08 Actually Rising had plenty to do with Kojima and had been under development by Kojima productions for years until they decided to hedge their bets and hand over rights to Platinum whom he felt would be able to do it justice. He also ended up being very frustrated with them during certain aspects of it's development but was still quite pleased with the final product despite being a little irritated with Platinum and their lack of ability to really keep deadlines (hypocritical a bit lol). And technically Rising is now considered part of the official Canon. :) The plot was lighthearted, but I wouldn't consider it bad, it just lacked the same level of emotion that the other games have. Wow, so much hate for the bearded guy. I loved the game and I was fine with the boobs. It was a Japanese game, which is pretty much going to do that. I just graze over it. About the story, I was disappointed with the ending. I know the Sahalanthropus (spelling) was stolen and nothing happened, I thought my game was broken. I wanted more to the story, I wanted hints at Solid Snake not just Liquid. I would have liked to seen Hal, Huey's son too.

People found out that Ishmael (Big Boss) is just a hallucination in that hospital part, in the part where he says " I will get the guy on the left and you get the guy on the right" , he never shoots ,and you just end up killing both of them.

+Rogue Warrior MGS2 was the black sheep at the time of its release due to Raiden, but it's been looked upon quite favorably after a few years when more people understood the story and the necessity of bringing in a rookie for the story. It was also quite groundbreaking in terms of graphics and attention to detail when it was released in 2001.

I think Bethesda games need to have a feature where if you have big weaponry or strong armor people avoid fighting you or you get unique intimidated dialogue options (instead of pointless comments from raiders). It feels hilarious when Kellogg acts so tough to me (in full X-01 Mark VI power armor with a max-spec gauss rifle) and I kill him in one shot. It’s a big oversight and another area where Fallout 4 lacked depth.

+RealShaun MGSV costed ~83$ millions to develop at the time of release. The Witcher 3 costed 34$ millions. Comparing two of the best games of the year, I can see where you're coming from. However, The Witcher 3 was extremely efficient. Other AAA games can cost upward 100$ Million or above. GTAV costed 265$ Millions, Destiny costed 500$ millions, for example. So you see, for a game in development for 5 years, MGSV was still very efficient compared to some other games.
Now if it's still worth it for them to finish the game, I would say yes, you may still say no. But if I look at these numbers, I'd say "Yes, they probably can still make it"

Half the game was left out, so I think it's horribly disappointing. Even so, the game was amazing. It's just that it could have been a LOT better if they had all the stuff that was cut out, and they cut out the fluff (like the repeated missions)
As for Quiet, she's the most blatant fanservice since Dead or Alive Extreme 2, and yet she was actually the most interesting character in the game. I don't mean because of the sexy stuff, but because of the story that was told in large part without words, pardon the pun.
You guys forgot something. The vocal cord parasites are STILL activated with your accent, regardless of language. They will detect the way you talk and base it off a location or an area where the accent is present. It is unreasonable, BUT it's a metal gear game and this is a good enough explanation to me. It was stated in a cassette tape

1.he burned quiet to a crisp at the beginning(I understand it's self defense) he got her burned so badly it caused skull face to put the parasites in her body. which lead to quiets death.
2. big boss and ocelot decived everyone and made the world think that the medic was bigboss even the medic was fooled and became bigboss himself. he even left his best freind Kaz to die at the hands of the soviets. if it wasn't for venom snake kaz would have died in the outpost you save him in.
3. bigboss decived your playable charecter and you trough out the whole game as you did his dirty work and killed skull face. it causes the medic to lose his personality and make you feel so guilty and pissed at him. case simply the real bigboss is the most evil master mind in mgs

Joe, they actually do own up to her objectification, super hard. Get the "Boss, you stink" cutscene when you have a high relationship with Quiet and you get a shower scene in 1st person with her. Look in the background and DD soldiers are checking her out. I laughed my ass off the whole time.
There might have been a more involved storyline with Quiet that was cut along with Chapter 3.
Granted, it's way less veiled than Eva, Boss, Sniper Wolf, or Meryl; however, play Peace walker and examine Strangelove or Paz, and not only are they the only ones who have viewable 3D models, their boobs jiggle. I think Kojima's a 15 year old at heart, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's actually really funny. Just look at Raiden or Snake in MGS1-4. Ass shots, dick jokes, shirtless torture scenes. No-one complains about those and says it's insensitive or objectifying.
It seems a little hypocritic for a series where stuff like this has a history. In a way, Quiet sorta owns up to herself by being so thinly veiled. "What, you expected classy female? Doesn't that mean.... *boobs*?" They could have done it a little better, but what's done is done.

+Editorial Yeah, but that's all such an afterthought to everything else in the game portraying Quiet. It's like, they go out of their way to sexualize her, and then sort of tack on these, "Oh, yeah, feel guilty about this" moments. It's really hamfisted and poorly handled. I mean, Quiet is a great character. Hell, she could probably be one of the greatest character's in the franchise. We could be discussing her character arc in great detail right now, but what we are talking about is how she's portrayed. And that's not our fault: Kojima went out of his way to push her sexuality in our faces every chance he could get. What other choice DO we have than to talk about it? It's unavoidable, and by default a major part of her portrayal. And that sucks.

You didn't have to replay the Chapter 1 missions. I skipped most of those and still did Missions 45 and 46. That being said... It was pretty lame that there was only actually 6 new main missions in Chapter 2 even though some of the Side Ops were story missions.

Watching this 5 years later, I played MGS5 TPP when it was first released. I loved it, just like I'd loved all the MGS games. To me, they're great in spite of their stories, to say they're overly convoluted is a massive understatement. I've played them all several times, I quit even trying to keep up with the story long ago. It's probably my favorite video game series ever, except perhaps the GTA series. I know GTA is the popular, easy choice for favorite series, but that doesn't take away from how good it is. My point is, the MGS series is one of the best ever, in spite of convoluted stories in each game. It requires some of the best gameplay ever from a game series to rank among the best ever when it's story is a detriment.
And then...Metal Gear Survive came out

tranquil pistol is a classic. if you played all the metal gear solids, the tranq gun is just mandatory no matter what.
putting enemies to sleep is easier and lasts longer. I prefer tranquilizers personally.

I haven't played MGS5 yet, but I think I'd lean towards your point of view regarding the circular themes in the games, as it is pretty obvious that these games are really interconnected and another game covering what happens between Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake seems like the way to go to further explain the real Big Boss arc.

Having successfully completed his mission, Solid Snake attempted to make his escape from the doomed fortress. Just then, Venom Snake intervened and revealed himself, blocking Solid Snake's escape.

Believe it or not, if you guess that the similarity between all the infected soldiers is that language (escapes me at the moment) and quarantine every staff member that speaks the language, you actually skip that whole kill your own soldiers mission and are congratulated for containing the outbreak
If you're friend is seriously so disturbed because their gender is sexualized in an industry almost exclusive to men then maybe they should be worrying about something else. I mean seriously, did you really just say that the sexualization of men in Metal Gear didn't matter because it always happens for plot? What the hell? Have you seen how much random gay scenes there are in Metal Gear(not that there's anything wrong with that)?
