Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is an impressive game but an extremely poor value & sets a very dangerous precedent. Unacceptable! Kojima is better than this!
If you bought magazines with demos, there was probably hours of gameplay if you counted all the demos on the disc. But it only costed about £5 roughly, for the magazine and the disc.

That's why I purchased this game when it was $15 on Xbox One hah. I am not a fanboy either, I happen to have played MGS for the first time when I got it. I still think $15 may be too much but it was good.
You do realize that there's such a thing as not being able to get the first four games, right? With a little time on the internet, you can quickly learn all the basics. I jumped into the Elder Scrolls at #4, and I have no problems with the lore. You don't have to play all previous metal gear games from the NES to the spinoffs to understand what's going on.
Sam Geuvenen at least give a good comparison. there is nothing from morrowind that you are required to know in oblivion. you can play any zelda game in any order. mgs is a story driven franchise and requires you to know the story. also if joe wants to only play as big boss he only needs to play 2 mgs games. mgs 3 and mgs peace walker
Ok, let's try another example. Why not look at... Metal Gear? I got in with MGS1 and I understood what was happening without playing the NES games. My best friend started on Sons of Liberty, and another started with Peace Walker, and they're just fine. The only Metal Gear game you can't play without playing the previous ones is Guns of the Patriots, but that's due to all the bits of old metal gears in it.
Kojima wanted this to be free demo, but Konami wanted a new MGS game to sell by 2014. P.S: I have divided price of TPP by number of main missions, and GZ should have costed 8 dollars 40 cents.

It was free and it was amazing, so happy I decided to hold back for it
Dalton Uber do the main mission and I think it unlocks the next. If I remember correctly, to unlock one of the bonus missions you have to find all the patches throughout the ground zeroes mission through one playthrough
You know what's funny? Just about everyone who is following Ground Zeroes has probably spent more time reading and watching reviews of it than what it takes to actually finish it.

It's just before release DLC, with 49.99 dlc with only 40 minutes of fresh gameplay for games like COD and Battlefield I don't see why people complain so much when they cash out for that DLC with no problem. Kojima could have saved Ground Zero as DLC after release of PP and no one would bitch, they would eat it up, but instead he gave us the game early so stop complaining and open your mind alittle to see this is no different then DLC you already pay for, you just got it early

Amen brother .im a recent MGS fanboy ,i played through all the games starting from MGS1 ,MGSV ,2,3,4 and peace Walker in that order i I got my copy of ground zeroes a few months ago for 5€ used and in pristine condition . I wont say that isnt fun . It is , and if you are a completionist , then it has quite a bit of content to entertain the player with . But it wasnt worth the 30$ price at launch , no way in hell. Screw Konami for rushing the development of MGS5/V it had the potential to be so much more than what we got. Not buying anything from that scummy company ever again.

Remember that the value is based on length AND the cost of the game. 4 hours for a $5 dollar game is friggin great, no problem. But to expect $40 or even $30 dollars? That's just ridiculous. To that I offer the following conundrum: Isn't the opinion and perspective of a new player just as valuable, if not more, than that of a veteran player? TotalBiscuit talked at length about how fans of a series should be open to new players sharing their feelings about a game, especially one that's had such a long life and has accrued a massive following. That way, the veterans and fanboys can get another perspective on their favorite game and maybe notice flaws that they didn't before. In any case, reviews are strictly opinionated. It's not even really the length that bothers me. I bought Metal Gear Revengence which was a short game and had a great time with it despite the fact that it was only about 4-6 hours, but you know what the difference between Revengence and Ground Zeroes is? Revengence was a COMPLETE GAME! It had a beginning, a middle, an end, multiple levels, multiple boss fights, multiple enemies and it tied up its story in a satisfying way. Ground Zeroes isn't a complete game! It's the prologue to a much larger game. This means that not only is it short, but it also doesn't even end. It just kind of......stops. Imagine if Hideo ripped the first mission of MGS 3 out of the game (the mission where the boss first betrayed you) and called that its own game. Can anyone here honestly say they would be okay with that? This is the exact same thing! Ground Zeroes has no business being released as its own title.

When you don't know how to justify 30 bucks for Ground Zeroes, then I will do it for you. First of all no one complained that Kojima did huge demos for MGS2 and MGS3 for free back in the days. I had so much fun playing the tanker chapter and the first part of rescuing Sokolov in MGS3 without paying anything. Now Kojima does MGSV which is hugly ambitious and also expensive as hell and what this Ground Zeroes demo mainly is is some kind of crowd funding for Phantom Pain. I bought this overpriced demo because for me it was worth every cent and I want to support Kojima to fulfill his vision for this truely next gen game. I bet everyone who loves the MGS franchise thinks more or less the same.
If you bought it online it was 19.99... I just treated it like a downloadable game, early access or something. It may have been short, even if you include all the mission modes, but that kind of graphical power is rarely seen in a 20 dollar game. Not to mention it's been on sale for under 10 bucks within months of it's release. I don't know what people expected, he told you it'd be the prologue chapter very openly, folks could have just not bought it... Or y'know, did a little research like I did.

I got this for twenty bucks, and it was worth every single cent. For $40, absolutely not, but for cheaper, ABSOLUTELY. It plays great, it has multiple side-missions that increase the length of playing, and is well worth the money. Honestly, I consider this part of the payment to get MGSV, because that game will be worth more than $60. And don't insult Kojima. Don't fucking do it. He's made games that are all revolutionary, and Konami is the one who really set the price.

Got GZ with the Phantom Pain "definitive edition" which included TPP and some extra DLC content and I totally agree with you Joe. GZ was a short demo at best, it honestly should have never been a separate entity from TPP, it should have just been an additional prologue that everyone got when they initially bought the whole game, as it is just far too short of a game to be a stand alone title w/a initial price tag of $40!!

Even a few months ago, I heard the game was short, but I was still shocked that it was over so quick. Lewtable A speed run doesn't determine a game or its quality. It determines the fastest possible way for a game to be completed. Speed runners had to spend hours to even obtain 6 mins of play time. You people often disregard that and act like speed runs are the end of the world. I guess $60 games that can be legit speed run in an hour are unacceptable too right? From what I've heard, Konami wasn't making any money around this time, and they needed to put out something to keep the lights on, hence Ground Zeroes costing $30. Kojima was against it, but they didn't care.

I hate this idea of "if you play or watch a game's or film's predecessor, then its sequels become more enjoyable". It's silly, why would you alienate new potential fans and customers, especially in what is essentially a demo of a game? A game like this should strive to stand as a product of its own, without needing other products to make it at least enjoyable. Fair enough, you might not got some of the narrative, but when a game becomes almost redundant due to a lack of knowledge of prior entries into the series, the developers have done something horribly wrong. It's especially insulting when a sequel is supposed to take leaps and bounds from its predecessor, but doesn't, much like this game. I'm not suggesting that phantom pain is going to be bad, in fact it will probably turn out great, but seriously, this game doesn't do it any justice at all.

Dead Rising 2: Case 0 is the perfect example of how to do a prologue game. DLCs have become a sort of money grabbing cancer to most game franchises by their developers; hopefully this kind of thing doesn't catch on.

The fact that you never play Metal Gear Solid explains your problem. You didn't actually finish the missions. The whole game is designed for you to really be a soldier and think more on your own. And hvt in which you are assigned to exterminate for an example might be someone you are better off capturing and recruiting and instead gaining until on the person who hired you for that Target in the first place. Maybe even exploring the math more and finding other hvts or prisoners who give you more Intel that changes the mission entirely. Metal Gear Solid franchise has always been so in-depth. Newer Metal Gear players will despise this game being completely unaware of this.

I only just now finished the first level of Ground Zeroes and I was like “Wait… seriously? Was that it? Was this just an ad for Phantom Pain? WITHOUT QUIET???!!!” I then decided to check TH-cam for more info on this game to see whether I was just nuts or missing the point or something. Thank you Joe.
What's funny is that Square Enix did the same with Bravely Default, they created a prologue that allowed players to experience the game before release while also seeing what happens beforehand, but here's the thing, it was completely free. I got about 5 hours out of the demo and that's when I knew I had to have the game. Kojima take not, this is how to do prologue demos.
Also if you haven't played Bravely Default go get it now. It's possibly the best Final Fantasy game since the 3D age started and if you don't have a 3DS go and get one and buy the game with it.
"The camo from Metal Gear Solid 4 is gone..." The OctoCamo is not gone, it hasn't been invented yet. MGS4 takes place in 2014, whereas MGS5 is set shortly after Peace Walker in 1975.

You do realize that there's such a thing as not being able to get the first four games, right? With a little time on the internet, you can quickly learn all the basics. I jumped into the Elder Scrolls at #4, and I have no problems with the lore. You don't have to play all previous metal gear games from the NES to the spinoffs to understand what's going on.
Sam Geuvenen at least give a good comparison. there is nothing from morrowind that you are required to know in oblivion. you can play any zelda game in any order. mgs is a story driven franchise and requires you to know the story. also if joe wants to only play as big boss he only needs to play 2 mgs games. mgs 3 and mgs peace walker
Ok, let's try another example. Why not look at... Metal Gear? I got in with MGS1 and I understood what was happening without playing the NES games. My best friend started on Sons of Liberty, and another started with Peace Walker, and they're just fine. The only Metal Gear game you can't play without playing the previous ones is Guns of the Patriots, but that's due to all the bits of old metal gears in it.

Dalton Uber Oscar Reece I downloaded it in 30 minutes, finished the primary mission in 50 minutes (S rank, first try), Beat all side missions (including Body Snatchers and Dejavu) in about 6 hours together with all S ranks first try.

Dalton Uber do the main mission and I think it unlocks the next. If I remember correctly, to unlock one of the bonus missions you have to find all the patches throughout the ground zeroes mission through one playthrough

You know what's funny? Just about everyone who is following Ground Zeroes has probably spent more time reading and watching reviews of it than what it takes to actually finish it.
I can vouch for that, reeaaalllyyy tempted to go buy it though so I probably will when I get over to the PSStore

It's just before release DLC, with 49.99 dlc with only 40 minutes of fresh gameplay for games like COD and Battlefield I don't see why people complain so much when they cash out for that DLC with no problem. Kojima could have saved Ground Zero as DLC after release of PP and no one would bitch, they would eat it up, but instead he gave us the game early so stop complaining and open your mind alittle to see this is no different then DLC you already pay for, you just got it early

I wont say that isnt fun . It is , and if you are a completionist , then it has quite a bit of content to entertain the player with . But it wasnt worth the 30$ price at launch , no way in hell. Screw Konami for rushing the development of MGS5/V it had the potential to be so much more than what we got. Not buying anything from that scummy company ever again.

Some people seem to have a hard time figuring out how Joe can attribute a value based on length. Remember that the value is based on length AND the cost of the game. 4 hours for a $5 dollar game is friggin great, no problem. But to expect $40 or even $30 dollars? That's just ridiculous.
There also seems to be a running fallacy that Joe has no right to review MGS games because he has never played them. To that I offer the following conundrum: Isn't the opinion and perspective of a new player just as valuable, if not more, than that of a veteran player? TotalBiscuit talked at length about how fans of a series should be open to new players sharing their feelings about a game, especially one that's had such a long life and has accrued a massive following. That way, the veterans and fanboys can get another perspective on their favorite game and maybe notice flaws that they didn't before.
In any case, reviews are strictly opinionated. If you don't like the opinion, that's fine. But you shouldn't tell Joe that he can't share that opinion.
It's not even really the length that bothers me. I bought Metal Gear Revengence which was a short game and had a great time with it despite the fact that it was only about 4-6 hours, but you know what the difference between Revengence and Ground Zeroes is? Revengence was a COMPLETE GAME! It had a beginning, a middle, an end, multiple levels, multiple boss fights, multiple enemies and it tied up its story in a satisfying way. Ground Zeroes isn't a complete game! It's the prologue to a much larger game. This means that not only is it short, but it also doesn't even end. It just kind of......stops. Imagine if Hideo ripped the first mission of MGS 3 out of the game (the mission where the boss first betrayed you) and called that its own game. Can anyone here honestly say they would be okay with that? This is the exact same thing! Ground Zeroes has no business being released as its own title.

One day EA will release a 3 minute demo for Battlefield VI with 1 minute of that being a cutscene, with microtransactions and $60 box price and some people will still go out there and support it. It's getting beyond stupid the amount of shit these publishers get away with.

When you don't know how to justify 30 bucks for Ground Zeroes, then I will do it for you. First of all no one complained that Kojima did huge demos for MGS2 and MGS3 for free back in the days. I had so much fun playing the tanker chapter and the first part of rescuing Sokolov in MGS3 without paying anything.
Now Kojima does MGSV which is hugly ambitious and also expensive as hell and what this Ground Zeroes demo mainly is is some kind of crowd funding for Phantom Pain. I bought this overpriced demo because for me it was worth every cent and I want to support Kojima to fulfill his vision for this truely next gen game. I bet everyone who loves the MGS franchise thinks more or less the same.

I got this for twenty bucks, and it was worth every single cent. For $40, absolutely not, but for cheaper, ABSOLUTELY. It plays great, it has multiple side-missions that increase the length of playing, and is well worth the money.

Yes, it is a demo, but like I said, I feel that it's part of the payment for Phantom Pain, which, judging off of the gameplay of this game, will be an absolute masterpiece; worth much more than $60. This is the down-payment.

Got GZ with the Phantom Pain "definitive edition" which included TPP and some extra DLC content and I totally agree with you Joe. GZ was a short demo at best, it honestly should have never been a separate entity from TPP, it should have just been an additional prologue that everyone got when they initially bought the whole game, as it is just far too short of a game to be a stand alone title w/a initial price tag of $40!!

I don't think they will do that. Objectively speaking,Metal Gear Solid is in the top 3 most beloved and critically acclaimed franchises of all time,hands down. And,let's face it,the MGS games are selling like hot cakes. Doubt that they will do the same thing to MGS as they did to Castlevania.

I ended up getting it for $5 to see if I liked it enough to get Phantom Pain and I LOVED it. Now I've been working my way through the entire series and I'm LOVING it. The price tag had to be Konami's doing. I could see $15-20 at launch, but $40 or even $30 is ludacrous. They definitely should have been more forthcoming about exactly what you were getting. Even a few months ago, I heard the game was short, but I was still shocked that it was over so quick.
It's like every game in the series may be flawed in some way, but they are all flawed masterpieces.
Honestly this whole thing smells more of Konami then Kojima, especially given Konami's horrible god awful business decisions recently.

Lewtable A speed run doesn't determine a game or its quality. It determines the fastest possible way for a game to be completed. Speed runners had to spend hours to even obtain 6 mins of play time. You people often disregard that and act like speed runs are the end of the world. I guess $60 games that can be legit speed run in an hour are unacceptable too right? Cause majority of games are speed run in an hour.
MehGamer true but even without a speed run if you play it at your own pace you can beat the story line in less than 2 hours which is still retarded. not saying the game looks bad it actually looks amazing but like he said why pay $40 initially or $30 after price cut for a demo.

From what I've heard, Konami wasn't making any money around this time, and they needed to put out something to keep the lights on, hence Ground Zeroes costing $30. Kojima was against it, but they didn't care.
Why they should care what fucking Kojima thinks? He wasted a lot of Konami's money for five years + and the game was still incomplete. He is just another employee, not an excecutive so Konami did the best thing.

This game wasn't meant for the non-Metal Gear fans. Joe, especially if you're a first time Metal Gear player, you should have started literally 5 + games ago. Which is why you don't understand the narrative, as a long time Metal Gear fan I was more than happy with this game.

I hate this idea of "if you play or watch a game's or film's predecessor, then its sequels become more enjoyable". It's silly, why would you alienate new potential fans and customers, especially in what is essentially a demo of a game? A game like this should strive to stand as a product of its own, without needing other products to make it at least enjoyable. Fair enough, you might not got some of the narrative, but when a game becomes almost redundant due to a lack of knowledge of prior entries into the series, the developers have done something horribly wrong. It's especially insulting when a sequel is supposed to take leaps and bounds from its predecessor, but doesn't, much like this game. I'm not suggesting that phantom pain is going to be bad, in fact it will probably turn out great, but seriously, this game doesn't do it any justice at all.
The gameplay was pretty good. Not worth the money I paid for it though. As for graphics, meh, they never seal the deal for me.

Dead Rising 2: Case 0 is the perfect example of how to do a prologue game. DLCs have become a sort of money grabbing cancer to most game franchises by their developers; hopefully this kind of thing doesn't catch on.

The fact that you never play Metal Gear Solid explains your problem. You didn't actually finish the missions. The whole game is designed for you to really be a soldier and think more on your own. And hvt in which you are assigned to exterminate for an example might be someone you are better off capturing and recruiting and instead gaining until on the person who hired you for that Target in the first place. Maybe even exploring the math more and finding other hvts or prisoners who give you more Intel that changes the mission entirely. Metal Gear Solid franchise has always been so in-depth. Newer Metal Gear players will despise this game being completely unaware of this.

Joe, I am a big MSG fan and have been for decades, but man, I agree entirely. This game's value is BULLSHIT!
What's funny is that Square Enix did the same with Bravely Default, they created a prologue that allowed players to experience the game before release while also seeing what happens beforehand, but here's the thing, it was completely free. I got about 5 hours out of the demo and that's when I knew I had to have the game. Kojima take not, this is how to do prologue demos.
Also if you haven't played Bravely Default go get it now. It's possibly the best Final Fantasy game since the 3D age started and if you don't have a 3DS go and get one and buy the game with it.

The OctoCamo is not gone, it hasn't been invented yet. MGS4 takes place in 2014, whereas MGS5 is set shortly after Peace Walker in 1975.

Biggest MGS fanboy, been playing since the PS1, and I totally agree with you man. I was expecting something short, but this was ridiculous. If I hadn't paid for half of it was Gamestop rewards, I'd be livid.
I haven't played any MGS games but the trailer for this one got met so hyped, it looked amazing. Sucks when shit is a dissapointment like this.
Watching this in 2021. Just bought MGSV and it was bundle up with the Phantom Pain and still feel cheap addition. Only adding context to the main storyline.
