MGSV, to this day, has one of the best "sandbox playgrounds" in all of gaming. Specifically, the enemy AI makes it truly enjoyable to play around in.
And of the worst open world map and no boss battles(barely and bad) one of the most iconic things in Metal Gear series

mgsv is the only game i play. I've 100% completed it long ago but i still play it almost everyday
@@foxskyful Never played the other mgs games but I agree that there should have been many bosses throughout the story and the world is quite empty when free playing but the gameplay mechanics make up for it. Shame we will probably never get another game like this again.

DJ.HITLER peacewalker was a really great game too. Making that metal gear in pw was awesome. This one basically builds on so many things from previous game.
A bit late, but should be pointed out that the fulton recovery system was teased as early as mgs3, albeit it became a gameplay mechanic with Peacewalker.
Seven years later and it’s one of the most replayable in and out style of games I’ve ever played.
I guarantee you could play it right now and enjoy yourself more than 99 percent of other games this past 7 years.

I had to wait 6 years to get a decent computer that can run this game. Metal Gear is my favorite franchise and this is by far the most fun to play. I think MSG2 is more of a masterpiece considering the year it was released and its story, but MSG5 is all the fun you can ask for, and incredibly well designed.
The Quiet/Ocelot hack is probably the best thing in MGSV

No fans of stealth games say it sucks because the AI are brain dead, and fans of open world games say it sucks because there are no civilians or life in these 2 big maps, with alot of arbitrary closed off areas like not being able to climb mountains. Online is basically just something for Konami to make more cash so that we buy "insurance" on our bases in case players end up going in and trashing the place after we spent so much time building it. Collecting shit is fun yeah, the story is weird but thats kind of the point. Buddies might be good in theory but the bland stealth ruins the gameplay, so that only going in guns blazing provides any real challenge and fun. And theres no ending boss, and what bosses we did get are basically QTE. Essentially saying that the only thing that makes the game great is music and graphics, thats hardly praise worthy and the story won't win any prizes any time soon but it certain keeps the fans happy so I guess theres that. MGS has really gone down hill and well I can't really blame Kojima for being sick of making these, its basically just a way to milk the fans with microtransactions now once he comes up with a decent story. Setting a pretty bad precedent for future open world games and stealth titles, that they can be this bad at it and yet still sell well. Ugh.

I recently picked this up(I know I'm late) and I am VERY much enjoying this. Like so much. I LOVE it and I would recommend it and I only played mgs 4 and just a little bit of it but still understand the concept.
I just beat it for the first time like a month ago. Never liked any Metal Gear but I absolutely loved the gameplay. The story kind of sucked tho but i still give it a 100% awesome rating.

Glad you enjoyed but as a fan of the entire series this one is ultimately a let down. It however raised my opinion of MGS4 which gameplay wise executed a more war like atmosphere.

I think the saddest part is that since we now saw that Kojima’s own work without Konami creatively interfering created an incredibly contrived story for a walking simulator game, called death stranding, we know that Kojima should have not received 100% of the credit for metal gear games and actually, his team was just as important as him

I'm disappointed by some of you fellow gamers when I read your comments about what Joe has said about Quiet. I can't stand how Pro and Anti-Gamer Gate people are unable to see in shades of grey. Just because Quiet is very fucking obviously designed for sex appeal, like the developers and Kojima are horny 15 year olds who get excited over seeing a few inches of skin and pointing this out doesn't make you a “social justice warrior”. Conversely just because you point out that she does have a tragic backstory in a rich and multilayered and really brilliant game doesn't mean you are a misogynistic “men's right activist”. Traded this bad boy in, way to repetitive, but thats my opinion. Sure its a great game, but after what mission 27 or so, its just the same missions over and over but on harder difficulties. The "open world" part is just a filler for the boring side ops missons. Go here and kill/extract said solider, reminds me of GTA missions.

There's a sign post right next to it with an invoice stapled. You simply grab that invoice, use your cardboard box and "send" yourself to the other settlements. You need to gather the invoices from the other settlements too, though.

I know im way late to this video, but something I wanted to add that is amazing about this game: the enemies around both maps ADAPT to your playstyle and try to COUNTER your playstyle. You like to stay behind on hill and snipe everyone? Enemies will start wearing more helmets. Like to go in Rambo style and shoot everyone with a shotgun? Enemies will start to wear more armor (not counting the actual already armored enemies). You like to go in at night time every time? They are going to have more light posts on, and everyone is going to have a flash light and even some start to wear night vision goggles. Like to bring in your chopper often to kill everyone? They will start putting up more anti-air defenses. Makes you switch out your playstyle.
And I bought this for 5 dollars during the play-station summer sale. FIVE dollars. I'm only literally half way through the game, both half side ops and half main missions, and im already at 130 hours played. And STILL discovering new things, mechanics, guns, play styles, etc. It's awesome.

I think you're being very gentle with your criticism, Joe. I disagree that there's just "a bit" of story missing, that the game is just "slightly" repetitive. Throughout my playthrough I felt like this was an exercise in grinding and repetition, with tiny story snippets sprinkled in between (similar) missions. There's no argument that the gameplay is great (though even then I feel that the game doesn't really encourage every style of playthrough, but instead mainly a non-lethal approach due to Mother Base, and your demon points), but every other part of MGSV is just so damn disappointing, I find. There are games that are bigger than the sum of their parts, while MGSV has just one part.
Main missions here feel like side missions of other games, in terms of the story content in them. Side ops are just doing the same thing over and over and over and over ad nauseam, and honestly, infiltrating the same base for the 8th time is frustrating. I don't remember such reuse of maps since DA2. That's crazy. Chapter 2 is, once more, repeating the same things, in the same maps, just with higher difficulty - while the story parts you receive seem to drop on you out of nowhere. The structure in this game is terrible and feels random most of the time. When you do receive some story content, your protagonist stays so silent you start to worry he has some mental disability.
I also don't see how this can be considered a great "open world" game. There isn't much interesting about the map design. Afghanistan funnels you down relatively narrow roads, there isn't anyone out there other than enemies, you don't feel a war is going on, there's not much to explore for. The world feels dead, and as if it exists only for your missions. I think it would have benefited much more by being separate levels in the style of Camp Omega. Sure, some missions require a large space (such as the ones with the convoys), but you don't need to base your entire game on an open world just for those few.
It's funny. I have 83 hours spent with Venom Snake (I'm compulsive like that - I have to finish games I start), and out of them I'll probably remember and take away with me only 1. Which consists of two missions - the prologue, and the special quarantine one later in the game. These missions won't be easy to forget. And these missions are ones that have nothing to do with the open world or the massive freedom of gameplay MGSV is being praised for. It's not that they stand out just because they're the exception in the game, it's that they stand out because they manage to be more tense and dramatic and touching than any other part. I feel that "linearity" has become some cuss word in recent years, and I don't get it.
I realize that different gamers have different preferences. That's fine, that's cool. But even so, even if someone prefers solely gameplay over everything else, I'm still baffled how people don't think the other aspects of MGSV don't deserve much harsher criticism. I can't shake off the feeling that if this wasn't a Hideo Kojima game and didn't have MGS to its title, people would have been much more critical of every other category and the /overall/ experience, that I find lacking. And that's the thing with me. I did have fun, but the /overall/ experience was just lackluster at the end of the day. I'll forget it as soon as I put it down. And it's possible that me being more severe with my criticism is just a counter-reaction to all the accolades it's been receiving. Perhaps I'm the one being irrational here.

I thought Joe would've destroyed Konami and how they fucked this game up. The cut content, the total lack of story pacing, FOB microtransactions, the list goes on...
+DRUMadam It's a shame, but Konami wasn't entirely to blame. A lot of it was to appeal to a larger audience. The bare bones story presented is for the general audience, as a lot of people complained about how long the cutscenes were in prior MGS games. The cassette tapes are Kojima's way of allowing the story to be fleshed out without scaring away casuals.
TheVergilus Oh yeah, it got cut short by Konami for sure. But even the first act is pretty bare bones. I feel that the lack of cutscenes is what got people more upset than having mission 51 cut. For that, I blame Kojima. He had the time and resources to do more cutscenes, but pandered a larger audience. I doubt Konami would have said no if Kojima pushed to have more cutscenes.

I can understand that some people didn't like how MGS2 and MGS4 are full of cutscenes (personally, the storyline is what made me love MGS).However, this is just ridiculous ...I doubt that MGSV has 30% of the cutscene-time MGS4 had.
I'm mostly an MMO player (pretty much the only single player franchises that interest me now are Elder Scrolls and MGS) and especially after the end of chapter 1 I felt that I was "grinding" main/side ops to unlock the next cutscene.
Gameplay-wise, it was an awesome game (maybe GOTY). Story-wise however, it was a letdown.

Sadly I agree to some extent. 25 hours in, haven't played in a week. The gameplay is amazing, but everything between missions has gotten stale and quite boring. I'm also not a fan of how much less personality the characters have compared to previous games. Ocelot doesn't even feel like Ocelot, and while Kiefer may be a better voice actor than Hayter, I cannot but miss Hayter's voice, it has personality.
Yeah I totally get where you're coming from. I kept playing on and on in the hopes that it would get better but after 30 hours, and on the cusp of being bored to tears, I gave up. I'm a massive Metal Gear fan but MGS5 disappointed me big time. I'd give it a 7/10 myself. It's a decent enough game with great mechanics, and some of the missions can be pretty enjoyable, but it's nothing compared to previous games in the series. I honestly regret buying it at full price and wish I'd waited for it to hit the bargain bin.

+rkrokberg Well in my opinion that is an issue with "open-world" genere in general, that some poeple realy enjoy runing around and doing all kinds of stuff(like Mad Max from recent memory), in my case(don't think i am alone thinking this) i think repetition and distraction from main narrative(in some cases even to hide its weakness like in skyrim). MGS in the end got the better end of this genere as far as i see it.

I’ve been playing this game since it came out and have beat it on multiple platforms numerous times. If you like a game where you can chill and have fun but also challenge yourself from time to time, this is your game for sure. It’s not my favorite metal gear but it is definitely one of my favorite games of all time.

I don't fault Joe for not knowing this, as he admitted not having in depth knowledge of all the games, but to say that Quiet being there just for eyecandy and that it is "disgusting", or anything along these lines, is just laughable.
