Speaking of 30-day challenges, I'm going to break my bad habit of skipping exercise. For the next 30 days, I'm going to either lift or do some sort of cardio every single day, and I'll be posting a picture on Instagram each day with a progress update to prove it. If you want to join in, you can post your own pics with #cig30, or just comment on my pic and tell me if you stuck to your goal. My Instagram: instagram.com/tomfrankly/
@@rajishkhatri9639 Yeah basically what Pro-Ballers said: just describe in detail what you are literally doing in the moment when you are watch it. "Ok so I am watching some random a** people I've never met nor seen in real life have sex" That should make you realize that what you are doing is wrong and that you should stop.
To be fair he did talked about a lot of good information such as why we create bad habits, why they stick ( cue- routine- reward-craving) and gave an example from his expierence and such
I think that a better approach than the 30 day challenge is the one day challenge. "Today, I'm not going to (am going to) do X." It's a very simple and effective way to make a change. I started using it 4 months ago to stop going to McDonald's. Every time I see one, I remind myself that today I'm not going to McDonald's. it requires almost no willpower.
That backfired for me.... because I would really look forward to going the next day. What has helped me recently is vowing not to eat badly for a week/month, and then adding another week on top of it. I went three weeks without buying fast food, and now I can afford to get purple streaks in my hair, which is something I have wanted to do for a long time.
Stephanie Elizabeth yeah, then you dont want to loose all the hard the mental work you have been doing to keep free for 4 weeks so you take another week, and then another. And slowly your habits begin to fade. It becomes a habit not do something.
Yes yes but now I've reached a dilemma. Because I'd be bummed out when I lose my streak but I feel no need to start again because I'd lose my streaks constantly. That's my problem. Any vows to myself I don't take seriously and because I'm suicidal I don't really care about anything. Thomas and everyone else have just been saying to just do it. Nike was right. Sure. But I really don't want to and even though I really care, I don't change it. That's the question I'm looking for an answer to. We've stepped into a fractal.
Thank you for posting your old acne photo. Your skin looks so clear now and I'm encouraged! I'm 4 days in on a No Sugar challenge and I know I'm gonna love finally having clear skin! 🙌😁
End Drug Prohibition what you eat affects your skin because when you eat a lot of white sugar and other unhealthy foods, you eat less nutritious food. Enough protein, vitamins and antioxidants directly affect your skin but if all you're eating is sugary cereal and chocolate, you're not getting the nutrients your skin needs to be healthy. That's why diet DOES affect skin and and skin disorders. Although, you are correct in the sense that diet won't heal acne if it's hormonal. I also agree that having clear skin doesn't fix anyones problems unless it's painful pimples they're worried about.
Rememeber to wash your teeth and skin every day (showering), wash hands everytime you come back from outside or touched something unclean or what you suspect to be unclean (no need to panic)
I love that you dont just tell us the details but you actually partake in the methods and tips you suggest which i havent actually seen any self help youtubers do before.
You're wise beyond your years...no wonder you're well on your way to 1,000,000 subscribers. "Remove as much access to the habit as you can"...is gold. GREAT information. I can now rest confidently knowing there is hope for the next generation. 👍🏻
I'm on day 10 of a wholefoods plantbased diet. It's been so LONG since I'd been able to control my binge eating urges. Now sticking to this and feeling good. Can't believe it tbh. I've tried so much over the last year.
I've had a soda problem for many many years by now and I'm fighting it like this, applying the idea of "path of least resistance": I always have a bottle of soda at home because if I don't I immediately get a craving to go out and buy some, usually resulting in a binge. But instead of placing it next to me as I've used to I've started placing them at the bottom of my desk in the far back and instead have a water bottle right next to me. Now whenever I feel thirsty, I'm more inclined to take the path of least resistance to the bottle of water since that'll solve the problem of my thirst, only very rarely reaching down to grab the bottle of soda. While I haven't stopped entirely yet, I went down from binging like 20 liters in a week down to just about 2 liters and I intend to bring it down even further than that, eventually quitting. Appreciate your content as it's really opening my eyes in many aspects of my life.
Great video! I've used all of these methods before actually, can confirm that they work. This past October I did sober October and it went so well that I've stayed sober through November as well. For November I gave up facebook and that's gone really well also. During those 30 days you can really dig deep inside yourself and figure out what caused the bad habits in the first place. I am still working on my sugar addiction. It's really hard during this time of year when it seems like everywhere you go, somebody is offering you a slice of cake, pie, or cookies. Sigh. All I can do is NOT keep sugary snacks in my own home and keep lots of healthy snacks on hand.
I've been having a real hard time getting into the habit of reading again so I thought I'd start by listening to "The Power of Habit" on Audible and now I'm half way done with the book. Thank you Thomas your videos are time well spent when I put the knowledge into action.
One thing here that wasn't addressed is the question what is habit compared to addiction? And if something that is a part of your life is missing, won't your productivity suffer? At least temporarily?
I saw your video on " 10 books every student should read" and I decided to purchase the power of habit as the first one out of the 10.. I'm half way through and I am really enjoying it! Watching this video help to put everything into perspective and gain some additional tips on how to actually break bad habits.
Hey Thomas, could you make a video about learning something alone? For things we want to learn outside the scope of the college/school or when we have a bad professor
I read the power of habit after I watched one of your older videos and you recommended it. I have now quit soda completely 2 months ago, I used to drink a can a day. I lost weight, my acne is better, and soda tastes disgusting to me now. Looking forward to making healthier habits. Great video.
Ive quit: - video games - binge eating (and eating unhealthy in general) - porn and fapping - being hateful/un-empathetic - sleeping really late Now Im working on building healthier habits and being more productive. Im hoping to work on procrastination and excessive phone use next. I'm really excited! This kind of stuff opens so many doors over time and is honestly the key to satisfaction with life imo. Just knowing that you're going in the right direction is so reassuring no matter what point you're at. Knowing that you're doing what you can.
1. Have a compelling, well-defined reason in your mind ○ Can have a physical reminder of it 2. Identity the reward and replace the routine ○ Redirect the cue 3. Remove access to that habit as much as possible Start as a 30 day challenge
Thanks! I'm a freshman at university and your videos do help a lot. Almost all the time I get the highest grades possible and partly that's because of your content. It's really useful and inspiring. Keep up the great work!
I think this is better than registering for Skillshare's website itself. Since YT is free, everyone has an opportunity to learn. You just have to choose topics that interest you, and then voila! you are gradually learning as you watch. Thanks for this video bro!
For me personally, the best way to "break a bad habit" is to stop it from even becoming one in the first place. Any sort of habit is born gradually, just as you basically mentioned. It doesn't just appear out of nowhere. But obviously, we can't always stop something bad from becoming a habit. That's where we need to put in the work, which increases the more we allow the bad habit to take over. Nice video, by the way.
Probably the most amazing video on TH-cam!!!!!!! As a psychology student motivated by self-improvement, this very nicely and concisely puts together the principles and applications of behavioural analysis! Well done.
First of all, thank you for all the videos. I saw that book in a store and I immediately though "I know this! Thomas Frank is always talking about this. I should buy it!". And I did. I'm still in the middle of the book but I'm really loving it. At the same time I'm beginning to listen to your podcasts when doing daily things like brushing the teeths and eating breakfast and it started to change some thoughts I had in my mind about the subjects you talk about. Also during the boring routines of going to the underground, I now bring that book and it stopped me from being all the time on facebook. I still have other bad habits I would like to end like being always late or sleeping in the morning but little by little I see some changes on my routines and habits and that's all thanks to you! I hope you continue doing this and that you have a lot of sucess in life. Best from Portugal :)
Another thing that really worked for me that I should share is watching hypnosis videos, look up a hypnosis video on breaking your specific habit before you go to bed, this helped me the most
Was about to comment in full detail regarding my 30 day plan, but I sort of already caused a blunder while doing the typing. I'll just stay quiet and FOCUS instead on my plans. *With full faith I begin* Thanks for the prompt !
Alright, I'll add my 2 cents about my own experiences with bad habits: First and foremost, some habits just die out without you necessarily doing anything for it. I used to bite my nails for years and at some point it just started dying down to a point where I only rarely do it nowadays and if I do so, I go to the bathroom afterwards to fix it. I also realized that I only ever did it when I was bored so that is some information I could have used to combat that vice deliberately. Secondly, some habits can just become so annoying for you that you are sick of them just like that without needing willpower to quit. I used to browse a couple of 'funny' sides every day but got annoyed at this taking up so much time each day so one day I was just so pissed at this waste of time that I just stopped. The same happened with facebook, wasting so much time with pointless refreshing the feed also got me to just quit. Thirdly, you don't necessarily have to kill a habit, just modifying it can do the trick as well. Thomas already mentioned the cookie story which is similar to my habit in question, whereas analyzing why you perform those actions in the first place is the key. For me it was drinking Cappuccino....5-10 cups a day. I just love having something to drink, preferably something warm, at my desk almost all the time. Figuring that out, the fact that it's not the Cappuccino itself I was after but just having something ready to drink all the time allowed me to simply switch to tea where it doesn't matter when I drink that much, at least not with the teas I am drinking. Admittedly, between the switch was a vacation where I didn't have access to that habit in the first place which probably made the switch significantly easier that it would have been otherwise. I could even go so far and scrap the tea for simple water if I wanted to. In conclusion, finding out why you do something in the first place can be severely helpful.
Thank you so much. Talking about your energy drink problem helped me a lot as it helped me realise that we all have flaws and we all have the ability to overcome them. All of your videos talk sense each and every time :). Amazing work!
Thank you very much for sharing all this incredible info for people online! It's amazing seeing a person who reads books and kindly gives out their morals and summaries honestly and efficiently. There should be more people like you in society sharing beneficial experiences honestly setting aside any urge for exploiting them.
I read the book. It's a good read but he tells little on how to break the habits that too at the end of the book. But frank you got the golden nugget for what the book is actually telling us.
'What it lies in our power to do, what it lies in our power not to do.' bad habits: Structure = Cue, craving, routine, reward Akraisa: When you fall into short-term rewards even though you know your long term goals are better 1. Break akraisa: Clear mental picture of who you want to become 2. Find a replacement routine that gives you a similar reward. 3. Figure out the ACTUAL reward of your bad habit, to help you do Step 2^ 4. Pre-commitment Strategy Eg: Focus extension to block websites 5. Do a 30 Day challenge
A 30-day challenge is really powerful, because it makes you think you can resume the habit when you're done, but often when you finish it, the habit has become much less attractive. I've done this with several time-wasting websites. When I returned, it was hard to remember why I was addicted to them in the first place, and I stopped using them at all. If I had decided "I'm going to stop using this website forever" I probably wouldn't have been able to, but since it was only for a month, the habit was easy to break.
@ThomasFrank, I just have broken a 'badhabit' today (3 months of not doing that bad habit). WHAT GREAT TIMING :D.... your video really help me in life. THANK YOU.
I became addicted to soda from the vending machine at the end of the street and you've just shown me the reason I became addicted, I enjoy the walk! This was generally helpful
Out of curiosity, primarily where did you develop your philosophy, and what pushed you to initially do so? I recently came across your channel and I think the information you're putting out is invaluable. But I'm just curious where you started.
I find this video so useful that I even downloaded the audio so I can listen to it again. I have a similar problem but with coffee. I've always liked coffee but recently its gotten so bad that I've started drinking it more than water, and would catch myself heavily dehydrated. I hope to cut it out all together. Staying away from it is going to be hard since I work and live in the city and there's a dunkin donuts or a starbucks or other coffee shop on literally every other corner.
The bit I love about this the most is Thomas looks better than his photoshop photo. He has offbeat energy and enthusiasm that is infectious. Which I guess comes from the self-confidence of dropping bad habits.
You talk so concisely and you are so informative of the topic, I honestly thank you so much for spending the time to make this, it really was useful :)
I swapped adderall with Kratom over a year ago wow! am I happy and this is so true ! addys and energy drinks are both so stimulating and poppy for the heart and mind ! great content
I'm with you!! I only eat sugars through snacking, so I'll start with 30 days without (unhealthy) snacking, it's gonna be hard :/ hope my bf joins in Good luck!!
Hello! I really love your video, and it actually will help me a lot to ged rid of all my bad habits! I'm so happy because I've finally found a good coach like you! I'll start my 30-day challenge tomorrow! Thank you so much! Regards from Morocco. Niss.
Good video. I wasn’t even searching for my habit (also energy drinks and nail biting), but still found this video accidentally and it’s very helpful. Thanks a lot.
Newer research and an emerging group of scientists believe addictions are actually habits or disorders of learning/dopamine reward systems rather than a disease that can't be "cured"
I can relate : developed high blood pressure , stopped , off the meds’ now/ that book is awesome my son gave it to me he is a teacher as well as his mother.
I listened to The Power of Habit last winter break, and it's one of my favorite books now. I liked the defining your why part of this video. I need to start doing that.
I'm going to use these tips to try overcome my eating disorder. I've been trying a million different method with little success, but I'm willing to do more if it means I can finally ditch this ED
The short term goal is known in many religions as "desire" or "nafs". Not all desires are bad, what makes a desire bad or good for you depends on how you approach it. At the end of the day, any desire that turns into obsession is going to result in a negative effect. In summary, being moderate is the key to everything in life.
You mentioned charles' book importance of habit in another video and i read it. It was a fantastic book and i'd definitely recommend it to anyone trying to go deeply into forming of habits!

I still have other bad habits I would like to end like being always late or sleeping in the morning but little by little I see some changes on my routines and habits and that's all thanks to you! I hope you continue doing this and that you have a lot of sucess in life.
Best from Portugal :)
..."compulsively biting your nails..."
*Stopped biting my nails*
Another thing that really worked for me that I should share is watching hypnosis videos, look up a hypnosis video on breaking your specific habit before you go to bed, this helped me the most
Sodie pops - papa bless
Ethan, the genius.
thomas, great moves, keep it up, proud of you
Was about to comment in full detail regarding my 30 day plan, but I sort of already caused a blunder while doing the typing. I'll just stay quiet and FOCUS instead on my plans.
*With full faith I begin*
Thanks for the prompt !
Alright, I'll add my 2 cents about my own experiences with bad habits:
First and foremost, some habits just die out without you necessarily doing anything for it.
My bad (good?) habit is binge watching this channel several videos at a time.
Thank you very much for sharing all this incredible info for people online! It's amazing seeing a person who reads books and kindly gives out their morals and summaries honestly and efficiently. There should be more people like you in society sharing beneficial experiences honestly setting aside any urge for exploiting them.
I haven't drunk any sort of fizzy drink (especially coke) for three years. So proud of myself.
Thanks friend! I have the habit of wasting time spending in social medias. Now I have decreased it dramatically low.
anyone know a good replacement for spending all day on youtube?
erukai learn an instrument
Me :3 the problem is i already play a shit ton of guitar which most of the time i do while watching yt
Learn new language?
I have learnt a new instrument (guitar), a new language (Italian) and I am still addicted to TH-cam
umm, hey look i have an answer here that i kinda give for a lot of questions actually..Run!
I read the book. It's a good read but he tells little on how to break the habits that too at the end of the book. But frank you got the golden nugget for what the book is actually telling us.
I'm a simple man. I see a Thomas Frank video, I watch it, and I like it.

'What it lies in our power to do, what it lies in our power not to do.'
bad habits: Structure = Cue, craving, routine, reward
Akraisa: When you fall into short-term rewards even though you know your long term goals are better
1. Break akraisa: Clear mental picture of who you want to become
2. Find a replacement routine that gives you a similar reward.
3. Figure out the ACTUAL reward of your bad habit, to help you do Step 2^
4. Pre-commitment Strategy
Eg: Focus extension to block websites
5. Do a 30 Day challenge
This video is really helpful, thanks Thomas!
You're welcome :)
If I had decided "I'm going to stop using this website forever" I probably wouldn't have been able to, but since it was only for a month, the habit was easy to break.
when you procrastinate your procrastination joke
@ThomasFrank, I just have broken a 'badhabit' today (3 months of not doing that bad habit). WHAT GREAT TIMING :D.... your video really help me in life. THANK YOU.
Actually lol'd at "Falcon Punched a Rando?"
Great, keep going ♥️
The bit I love about this the most is Thomas looks better than his photoshop photo. He has offbeat energy and enthusiasm that is infectious. Which I guess comes from the self-confidence of dropping bad habits.
Woa you look better than your goal.....
I don't know what I'd do without your videos and podcasts, Thomas. Thank you for all your hard work!
"Do not Falcon Punch random people for 30 days"
That made me laugh way too hard. XD
You talk so concisely and you are so informative of the topic, I honestly thank you so much for spending the time to make this, it really was useful :)

Good luck. Stay strong. Eat and drink right, exercise when you can, and sleep well. Hope you make it 😀
I'm with you!! I only eat sugars through snacking, so I'll start with 30 days without (unhealthy) snacking, it's gonna be hard :/ hope my bf joins in
Good luck!!
Hope you did cut out meat products too, especially stuff as sausages, those feed cancer a lot. Milk too. Hope youre doing well
Hello! I really love your video, and it actually will help me a lot to ged rid of all my bad habits! I'm so happy because I've finally found a good coach like you! I'll start my 30-day challenge tomorrow! Thank you so much! Regards from Morocco. Niss.
It's ironic because I'm procrastinating reading The Odyssey by watching this video haha
Btw I can relate to the analytics habit
Good video. I wasn’t even searching for my habit (also energy drinks and nail biting), but still found this video accidentally and it’s very helpful. Thanks a lot.
More like an addiction than a habit (there is a dopamine addiction) but people would get offended by that word if it's not a diagnosed disease. Sigh
just take modafinil
Newer research and an emerging group of scientists believe addictions are actually habits or disorders of learning/dopamine reward systems rather than a disease that can't be "cured"
I can relate : developed high blood pressure , stopped , off the meds’ now/ that book is awesome my son gave it to me he is a teacher as well as his mother.
I'll wright a joke about procrastination later
I loved all the nice, simple, yet engaging transitions used in this video. Great advice, thanks for taking the time to share this!

I really loved "Power of Habits" - thank you for the summary here, repetition is always great
This is my first "thumbs up" in a long time! You've earned it, great video!
Clear, concrete steps and goals defined in this video. Great work. Thanks heaps.
I'm actually reading the book 'Power of Habit' and it's amazing! Great video.
Just finished this book Thursday! Perfect video to pair with it!
