To master new skills and achieve your goals, you have to put in consistent (if not daily) practice. How do you stay motivated to keep doing that even when the going gets tough?
Today, I'll introduce an incredibly effective technique for keeping that consistency up. It's called the 20-Second Rule.

Doing 25 push-ups to switch to distracting activities might help, and in the worst scenario you get fit.

If you are a complete lazy fuck then commit to
doing one important thing every day.
Something that makes you proud at the end of the day.
Next you create the habit to do this thing first in the morning,
before you check your social media or anything else.
This helped me a lot! Even if I have a lazy day I get one thing done
in the morning and, I can go to sleep with a good feeling!
-Personal Power, makes self improvement videos and
    is overcoming his own laziness!

    • @Thomasfrank
      @Thomasfrank  7 ปีที่แล้ว +36

Essentially you need to plan ahead and figure out what specific skill area you're going to work on. When I pick up the guitar, I ask myself - what is my goal here? Some days it's becoming more fluent with modes (I'm currently mastering the Aeolian), other days it's drilling chord changes. I also use courses (like on Skillshare) or apps (Autochord is a great one for chord progression practice) to direct my practice. And of course, learning songs is a great way to stretch your abilities!
I have a more in-depth video on this: th-cam.com/video/0eItWeZFVHo/w-d-xo.html (fittingly also sponsored by Skillshare)

I've never really understood why americans wear shoes indoors (2:18). When you do take them off? What about the carpet? Won't your feet get smelly since you never ventilate them? If you don't take them off by the front door, where do you put your shoes? So many questions....
    Anyways, great video.

I am a Pilipino American, and I have been curious about this as well. It is so much more comfortable and convenient to leave your shoes by the front door. I am one of four girls, and we always get comments such as, "wow...that's a lot of shoes", whenever non-Asian guests visit.

Oh man, this video came out just in time for me. I'm trying to teach myself c++ and art, relearn calculus, and trying to stay consistent with HIIT, yoga, and bullet journaling. Knowing what I know now, my physical activities are consistent because I keep my equipment in the living room and the area clear. My studies are waning, most likely because I keep that stuff at my desk where I don't frequent as much. TH-cam and Facebook are my worst time vampires. Thank you for the advice!

I guess apps don't help us at all. Because it's kind of external influence and if we remove the app we'll continue to act in previous, procrastination way. I think we must teach ourselves act productive without any apps or exterior tools or people. Genuine will power and motivation grow from our internal desire.

If you want to be consistent ..
    1) Prepare a great timetable
2)Have a break in each interval of time you are working on to get things moving
3)Find the distraction and demolish it ..
    4) Think.. You have so many people to prove ...
5)Also include a time for devotion , its really helpful for ya....

*I hope this comment will add something to the video :)*
I'm practicing cromatic scales on guitar intensively at least 10 minutes every day. To keep that up I keep a chart by my computerdesk where I usually sit every day, the book is always in my field of view while playing videogames and such. On the graph each day, I write down the date, the minutes I was excercising, and the type of excersice. For example: 23/07/2017 - Harmonic Minor/Mixolydian ascending/Descending - Key: A - 30 minutes.
I have a quite big room, so I have a designated corner with my 3 electric guitars on the wall so I see them every day. And I keep my classical guitar by my computer so I can pick it up without to even rise up from my office chair. As I am a singer/songwriter that want to push boundaries with the writing, this helps a ton.

This video was interesting because I did a lot of things before, trying to make good stuff accessible, but what i found was that my laziness kicked in or i would forget that those things are right there. I suspect it has to do with my phone and my vision being limited to noticing screens. I've found using apps like Forest occasionally help, but it's a long journey to self discipline and achievement

Yet another amazingly helpful video. Your video on Habitica has been a game changer for me. It hasn't been a magical solution, of course it's progressive and proportional to the effort I'm putting in, but man do I ever notice a huge difference in my productivity, both at work and at home. Thank you for the free trial of skillshare! As for a goal I need to remove friction from, I signed up for a masterclass.com music composition thing a long time ago. I was enjoying watching the videos, and eventually I realized there are also assignments lol. By the time I realized this, it looked like I was way behind compared with all the other students. I tried printing out the lessons and leaving them on my desk, but week after week I keep not working on it. I think comparing myself with others is my big problem, and feeling like I ought to be in a hurry. Probably I should also tidy up the room where my keyboard is heh. It probably wouldn't hurt to leave the guitar in the living room like you do as well. One of the first assignments is to write a soundtrack for a scene from a movie, and to do that I feel like I need to be able to see the scene while playing the keyboard, so I should figure out a stand for my laptop that I can put near the keyboard. Hmmmm... Lots of stuff to think about!

I totally agree with keeping things that motivate me around. But I also have another way to get things done consistently; I usually try to make it a habit rather than an activity. I set a certain time for that routine in my day, and tell myself " well, I only need to do this for 21 days. and mainly the hardest is the first 3 ones. " That actually challenges me to stay consistent and each time I'd feel like giving up I'd remember heyyy they're only 21 days and everything is over... But actually, after these 21 days I'd figure out it became a lifelong habit that I'd feel really bad if I didn't get it done!

My problem is remembering to practice what I intend to practice (guitar, piano, singing, & French) for at least 5 days a week. I improve with most everything I practice. The sad thing is piano is my main instrument and I hardly ever play it once during breaks from school. I am improving with it, but I only practice at school. Should I just discipline myself to do it at home as well as school?

In school, I had shortcuts to a folder for each of my classes on my desktop so I didn’t have to dig through the file explorer. Every semester, I would delete the shortcuts and make new ones for my current classes.

Hey Thomas! I'm in 11th grade right now, and I'm having trouble in only one subject: Chemistry. This is because I keep forgetting a lot of things. And I've tried making a separate notebook with concise notes, rewriting all of my notes from memory, but it isn't long lasting. I've even put post it's on the wall but I'm not able to efficiently display information so that I can remember it. Do you have any method for retention of information?

+Shreyas Dodamani try and make your own understanding of things silly and personal. For example in maths i would always get mixed up with tan = sin/ cos, so i decided to think of a way to associate that with something arbitrary and i used SnapChat (S over C), i haven't forgotten it since and use this method more and more with physics etc. hope that helps dude i admire your persistence at your age

Another technique to help you be mindful when you'd otherwise be mindlessly going on social media is this:
    - choose a long password that takes a while to type;
    - always log out of social media sites after you're done using them.
This way, whenever your mind wanders and pushes you to slack on social media, the process of typing in your long password is enough to remind you why you set it up so long to begin with. It's useful because you don't need additional software and it works just the same (if not more effectively) on your smartphone where typing is even more cumbersome.
I've had my fair share of social media addiction. This small tweak, along with other strategies, has helped me cut down.
It's called "choice architecture". Make it easy to do the things you want to do. Make it difficult to do what you don't want to do.

Trying to balance music and school right now. I got tons of maths to study and practice (Engineering school sooo yeah haha). But at the same time, I want to keep practicing guitar and learning music theory. Some days its hard to balance the two. I'm thinking maybe I should do at least one difficult math problem everyday for each subject I had that day, and then I get to practice guitar (usually soloing and improv)

For the "flip side" of the 20 second rule, I have set up a separate profile on my computer. The only passwords there are the ones I need to do my personal studying. While I don't have to reboot my computer, I do have to put another password in to get to my main profle -- too much time to Facebook on a whim, so I stay with my personal studies until I'm done. It works.

I have my daily Japanese practice websites (Wanikani for kanji, Memrise for vocabulary) and my email as my start-up tabs on my computer. I like to check my email every day, but I have it as the last tab in the list to that I go through my Japanese reviews before checking my email. This, while not 100% effective in curbing my laziness, helps me at least remember that I should review Japanese every day.
If only I could figure out how to make setting up my viola for practice easier, I would be good to go lol.

So, I stumbled upon a "the power of habit" book at a coffee shop and I skimmed at some chapters. The golden rule of habit formation is to replace the act but keep the same cue and reward, right? So, after reading that I started trying to identify my cues, when they happen, and it was clear that I normally wouldn't stop whatever I'm doing just to follow the cue of, say, meditation or study, so it would go away in a matter of instants. The same goes for hunger waves when I'm fasting, if you don't follow the cue it fades. Apparently, we don't have a queue mode (specially if you're ADHD).

I understand the willpower-activation energy graph, and I understand the whole starting-it-easy concept, but I'm having a hard time understanding what exactly the 20-second rule is and where it applies. Are you saying that skills you want to strengthen should be set up to be "activated" within roughly 20 seconds, or am I way off?
I usually follow your train of thought in your videos, so I don't know why I can't seem to grasp what the 20-second rule is. Are you trying out a different video organization method? If so, you should consider a revision on it where there's more explanation of the "what."

As a software developer I have a folder with all the links I need to open for the day that I can just right-click and hit "open all in new tabs." I use YNAB so I can budget without saving receipts. I cook a bunch of meals in advance and freeze them in single-serving plates so I can just grab them and go. I have been known to set my phone and computer to the languages I'm learning so that I'm not forced to make time to visit special sites to learn vocabulary.
I'm up in Greeley, BTW, neighbor.

I want to learn programming in java and c++ (along with other programming languages). However, I didn't continue learning and practicing for a long time because I must of ended my "Honeymoon phase"; realizing upon this, I got myself upset. With this rule in mind, I will setup my desktop in a way where it's very easy to access all my tools, like my coding environment editor and the direct link for my programming courses then remove any game icons, and, for my physical workspace, I will have paper and pen ready for taking notes along with a clean desk. I am looking foward towards this and hoping to use this skill for making something fun and useful.

i think my problem is, i experience the honeymoon phase too much 😂 i think the world has so much to offer and i want to try all of it but as soon as i try one thing, my un organized habits take over and i get distracted by other responsibilities. I'm working really hard to improve my lifestyle though, because i know i have the potential to do these things, i just have to get up and do them!!! Also !! i found your videos a little while ago and so far they're soooo helpful. Honestly, i think they might be a big game changer for the way i grow up, and that might sound small coming from a 16 year old, but i know i have bad habits. a TON of bad habits, developed from my family and friends, and myself. And i realized it a couple years ago, and wanted to change it. but as many youtubers as i have seen, and as many counselors that i've talked to, none of their advice has stuck with me the way yours does. And that says a lot to me, considering a lot of things in my life have been very very inconsistent. But for some reason, i kind of remember the things i hear from you without any effort. So a big, giant, THANK YOU from me 🙆🏼 keep doing what you're doin

When I bought my guitar without a clue how to play it I burned through 2-3 months worth of guitar learning in just a couple days using Yousician. I can't afford premium anymore, and the practice it allows for free is basically less than a quarter of what I normally did for daily practice/development, and that discourages me from picking up the guitar, because the simplistic tunes I already know how to play do in no way help me improve, I need new material, but I want to be able to pick my pace. If a software picks it for me, the fun I'd be looking forward to having is already gone before it even started.
