I have been guilty of this many times in my life and am definitely willing to let go of this bad habit as it has landed me in trouble many many times. It's good to think big in life but only doing small things towards that will help the cause otherwise it will be frustrating all along the way.
this can easily be reframed as telling yourself: "just do something". that's something I like to tell myself at least instead of trying to motivate myself and it seems to help
I do tend to think about stuff too much and that convinces me of reasons not to do it. But "Just do it" doesn't always help either. What I like is when he said is to realise that it's not that big of a deal. If you can't shut up your brain the best thing is to convince yourself that it's not the end of the world
I would add 2 things to this: 1. Start with one change at the time. Life is short but it's easier to start small, drastic change will make things worse 2. Regarding bad habits - like checking reddit/insta/anything - remember that you stand against whole teams that design this to be more time consuming, so try to avoid it but be understanding for yourself
I am pretty good at stopping bad habits but It started as a kid. I didn't like that I went on fb all the time as it was just full of garbage and now I am not on any social media and I don't watch the news. but it was really easy. The hard part is people are always asking me, whats my snap, insta or fb.
@@zadesirius lol, im Reading/learning about science and history on Reddit.(for example) Whats bad about that, im not wasting time on some troll useless threads. Also I found Great info about IT/programming that helped me when I was learning it.
I love how Kurzgesagt can change up their content to help people out with their goals by breaking down the science behind the brain’s patterns when it comes to triggers and habits, then offering genuine helpful advice on how to achieve our goals effectively. Like they’ve mentioned, in order to change is by making little goals and little changes because your progress will accumulate over time through consistency. Just experiment and find out what works for you since it’s different with everyone. This is a really nice video.

Nice ideas. Here are my four to add: 1. Remove boundaries to starting: if you're want to practise guitar more then leave it out and plugged in. Make it so you can just walk past, play for 5 mins then get on with something else. It has to be as easy as possible. 2. Become aware of the things that stop you - sometimes quite small random things, like the guitar is always out of tune (so buy a tuner), or the only time you get to practise everyone is already in bed (so use some headphones) or it's difficult to hold the guitar on your bed (so find a good chair and move it next to your amp) 3. Remove pressure - if you're doing it to be famous then you're always going to feel the pressure to achieve. You've got to do it primarily because you love it. 4. and this is key for me - Acknowledge you only have limited energy. It can feel like if you have 5 free hours then you can do one hour of guitar practise, an hour of exercise, an hour to read your book, an hour to cook, etc. But in reality each activity has not only a physical cost, but also a mental load. Acknowledge the mental load, then free yourself of it. If you have a stressful job then you probably won't do your hobby - the job has taken all your mental load and that is why you're watching Netflix for 5 hours. 5. You do not have to change the world. It's ok, there are already plenty of authors, musicians, entertainers, photographers, etc. You can just do this for fun. Just honestly and seriously, start from the position that the world does not need you to do this thing, and will not care if you never do it. And now just do it anyway - do it for yourself.
Regarding #4 if you take 10-20 naps or Meditations in-between what you are trying yo learn and during that time you think about your mistakes and how to do better and then imagine you doing it properly you will return with more energy without stopping your practice. Resurce the difference between visualization vs imagination and look up catastrophic thinking.
This reminds me of a quote that has stuck with me "Most people when given a time machine would go back and change something small expecting a big effect but when faced with a similarly small decision in their everyday life they think it will have no effect on their future"
The thing is, for any given small action to have a big impact, it is extremely rare, yes, turning left or right could impact your whole life, but that doesn't happen often. Time travelers knows exactly which moment it is because they've experienced the other option already and traced it back to that one point, but we now in the present don't know, and often it isn't worth it to do the extra thing just because it might impact your life one day.
It almost made me cry when you guys said we don't need to buy anything to change our lives. We're so used to ads bombarding us with "YOU NEED THIS!!" or "DON'T MISS OUT!!!" that it almost feels too good to be true when we see authentic and healthy advertising. We desperately need more of this, much, much more!!
But you need to buy it, you need a lot of money to have good food, good supporting books, pay for internet, pay for music that inspires you or helps you move for exercises or housework, you need to pay for everything even water, that's what makes life monotonous pointless and boring, the main reason why as humans we are worth it and we don't mind dying young, it is the best option
@@xiebunlian You can make good meals out of rice/quinoa/pasta, beans/lentils, frozen/canned veggies, and spices-all cheap options for food (unless you're trying to make something with saffron or pine nuts). Buy meats when they are on sale. Books can be rented from the library, as can the internet. There are free wifi hotspots all around the city. Music can be streamed for free and also rented from the library. Yes, it's unfortunate that utilities cost money, but life doesn't have to be as expensive if you're willing to find better and cheaper ways of doing things. Just takes a little more effort than paying higher prices for near-instant results.
One year after this video, I have actually started changing myself (started about 2 months ago) it's not a significant amount of change but it definitely it noticeable! and I am super proud of myself. Before I used to just sit around all day browsing youtube and reddit and discord and literally doing nothing. Now I'm actually doing my work on time and started studying a few days before exams. Can't wait to work hard and get even better!
It's important to point out that bragging about how good you think you've done can tumble the card house you've build. If you feel better with what you've done, better keep it for your self and be happy about it.
Im not even joking, Kurzgesagt explains everything so strategically and logically, and really places the same idea in one's mind which teachers and etc. have been trying for so long. I can't believe how motivated I am currently to also leave all my bad habits.
Don't try to quit all of them at once! That motivation will run out really fast. Instead, try to pick the most important one, the one that will have the most impact on your life if you leave it behind. Start there, see what works for you, then you can keep going down the list :)
How is it even possible that we don't see our brain as an obstacle yet? Something to be modelled, at will, by force? The fact that something other than purely conscious decisions may have an impact on your own behavior can't be anything but a form of self-denial.

@@The_Good_Captain It depends. Don't just blindly reach out and help everyone you see because that is a recipe for stretching yourself out. However there is sometimes in this world a time where a person close to you loses a bit of themselves for one reason or another. And that person will lose the will to live or the motivation to better themselves. If you truly care for this person it is your duty to reach out and give that your best effort to help them within your own means. Do not ever give more than you are comfortable with and if you have to push past that barrier at times make sure to find the time to set boundaries and establish communication about where those boundaries are with the person in question. Unfortunately yes you may start to see a pattern where this person you care about is blowing past your patience and then you may start to lose the ability to care. They may continually ask too much and go past the boundaries. And in these cases it may be a good time to reassess if the person you care about requires more help from an outside source. Another friend or family member maybe. And if in the end this person really can't help themselves like you first thought and has evidenced to hurt others and themselves without improvement and maybe even has slid backwards over time. perhaps that is the time to have an intervention to let them know explicitly where there problems are and how they negatively affecting others. You can provide avenues for help like therapists in the area or support groups. But then, With effort and communication and understanding you can responsibly cut them out of your life until they help themselves. Because then you will at least communicated the tools to help them fish for themselves. This is only if you initially believe in them and you believe in the long-term friendship or relationship. It truly is up to discretion but sometimes it is necessary to pull from within to help the ones we love. But we always have to do it responsibly.
That first one makes me feel a lot. I can see how I have been living the past 12 years in fear from trauma. Fear of other people. Loved ones did terrible things to me, multiple different loved ones, and it's been very difficult to find strangers that want to become more than strangers and help support me.
Pretty accurate. I got into exercise by just automatically driving to the gym after work. Then I wouldn't let myself leave until I went in and did at least one exercise. Then afterwards, I was always like "well, I've already started, and I'd look silly if I left now... I may as well finish the whole workout". It still surprises me how effective that strategy was for me. It might not work for everyone, but I encourage giving it a try if you want to exercise regularly. And he's right. The first few weeks were miserable. Now, not getting my scheduled exercise in is miserable. The human brain is amazing.
@@vichentez you should also pay for whole 3 or 6 months in the gym so you'll feel forced to go to not waste your money, if you pay just 1 month its highly likely you won't pay for the next month and leave it
Something that worked for me too was listening to an audio book at the gym, but I could ONLY listen to it there! So if I wanted to know what happened next in the story... I had to go to the gym! I also found setting a realistic goal then a bonus goal helped... a bit of brain trickery there but ... basically I'd love to go 3x a week! But making that my goal lead to a lot of "failure" feelings if I only went 2x.... so I adjusted my goal to be 2x so I always meet it, and 3x is a bonus! HUMAN BRAINS man.... so crazy XD

I just went through one of my worst depressive moment of my life, and I started going to they gym. I started going 30 minutes, now my brain build the habit to go 1 hour 4 times per week. You need to start slowly! Thanks for this video, it’s amazing and it touches my heart.❤️

I’ve been dealing with depression for a long time and I’ve struggled a lot the past few years. I always seem to fall out of my habits because I put too much pressure on myself to be perfect from the beginning. Small steps are still steps, change doesn’t happen over night. Great to see all the positive comments! It’s nice to know I’m not alone
You're not alone! Alot of people feel the same! But we always gotta remember that if we want to change, we have to change gradually. Nothing becomes successful/is acheived overnight!
no worry.everyone is dealing with depression. it's just how they face it different. how many people on earth now feel honestly from their own heart " i will never swap my life with anyone". we are all struggling thinking we can be more. some self blaming become depression, some blame other to justify their situation it end up hurting others. only very2 small ammount suceed on it. lets not overthinking, and just start focusing on the small steps
I feel you. I've been struggling with depression for about 11-12 years now. I have very similar experiences with habits as you do. Especially when it comes to hobbies. I have a graphics tablet for drawing, as well as an expensive digital piano just sitting around collecting dust because I feel like I' m unable to change. I just hope that my move and my (belated) start in college in a few months can help me at least a little bit in changing. Best to you friend! Hope it gets better.
This sounds really familiar. I almost always overperformed until last year I completely broke and was diagnozed with anxiety dissorder and alarmingly bad deppression. I am now much better but like the video said change happens in small steps you can control. And you should be happy about them even if they seem small at first. Use all the time you need and be happy about the small things and when things are tough ask people around you for support as most of us are eager to help as we all have faced something that has been hard or taxing. Most of us want other people to succeed too and its as painful to experience those things yourself as it is to watch someone face their demons and challenges. Keep up people and dont let those setbacks slow you too much. Take your time and enjoy the little things this live has to offer. If you read all of this I wish a awesome day and to have the power to carry on. You are awesome always remember that.
I've decided to change some habits a couple weeks ago. At first it was "easy" but lately I've been feeling like it's not enough and my therapists keep telling me to not rush. Now I understand it better, so thank you a ton!
I live an unhealthy lifestyle. (I turn my days and nights around, don't go outside, don't brush my teeth, etc.). I try to take action but always fail on the second day. And until today, I was at a loss. Then, as usual, I was browsing TH-cam and found this video, watched it right away, and right after that, I wrote down a few things I wanted to make into habits. (Brush your teeth, exercise, etc.). Then, an hour later, I started doing one of those things. Then, to my surprise, I accomplished everything I had written on the list, even though I thought that if I could do even one of those things, I would have done well. I was amazed. It was so easy that it was ridiculous that I kept worrying about it. ...... I need to repeat it many more times to make it a habit, but I believe I can do it this time. Thanks, kurzgesagt! (I use translation software)

If you want to know more about how to create good habits and break bad ones, I recommend you read Atomic Habits by James Clear. This book helped me tremendously in understanding how to develop new habits and break old ones. It's really fun to read, if you are interested in the topic :)
Me too I’m joining the construction laborers union. On the 20th I’m going to a week long training session where they would put me in various physical tests to test my endurance and strength since it’s very important to have both of those in this field. Im doing this as a 19 year old. I have to be in my best shape to do rigorous and long inducing work which I’m familiar with. Shifts will be 10-12 hours on average. Dropped out of college to start with a 28/hr starting pay with benefits as an apprentice which is really good and one of the reasons why I dropped out of school. I do plan on joining college again but once I’ve gotten my fair share of cash on hand I hate the idea of having student debt. I guess this is the next step in my life and I wish anyone else good luck in whatever they are planning to do..
The whole video was about "just using your free will harder" he just says it in 5 slightly different ways getting more and more condescending as he goes, been a fan of the channel for many years but they have a very simple approach to most of their videos.

Thank goodness you brought this up! Truly, investing has changed my perspective on how one can succeed in life; working multiple jobs isn't the optimal way to attain financial freedom and unfortunately, we discover this later in life. I would add something that I’m trying to apply to myself : Don’t look up at the mountain, but look rather down you path calmely. And forget about time. You will do this, no matter how long, how far, how hard it seems to be, at first.

One day I was stoned out of the mind during pandemic and this scene played on the laptop, I broke down and cried for around 5 min. I was in similar situation to Bojack but when the runner says that, you understand why he says that and the difficulty of doing it every day,which is the hardest part. I can do any new activity for a week or two but after I lose my focus
The hard part isn't starting a new habit - the hard part is dealing with everyday stresses that frustrate you and you fall back into the same habit that the everyday stresses probably turned you on to. Like comfort food stress eating. It's hard when you deal with the stresses day after day and you have few options to help you deal with them, and trying a new habit more often than nots put even more stress on you because it's not routine.
There must be a way to tackle this. Maybe practicing different coping mechanism then eating. When about to stress eat,remembering how bad it feels after stress eating using this thought to use a nother coping mechanism like,meditation,grounding exercise,or smth else. After using this for some time. Maybe ur brain will recognize better habits.
This is the first video that has ever acknowledged that it can take hundreds of days to develop a solid habit - as someone who always heard ‘two weeks to make a habit!’ from videos and continually failed somewhere not far after that point, this gives me something I never had before… understanding and hope. ❤

I have ADHD, so simple things like getting in the shower or making breakfast feel like a chore. I tricked myself into doing this stuff because I put music when I shower, so simply by opening the Spotify app I "trigger" the shower response, and I put video essays when I cook. So not only do I have the stimulation I need to not get distracted, but I also started looking forward to this stuff! I had no idea I could apply this stuff to other things, or that it was a known process. I wonder how I can implement it in more aspects of my life.
I have adhd also and cooking and cleaning with videos or podcast is helpful for me. Unfortunately these things are avaible around the clock. It used to be more easy, when I had a special time when special radio program was broadcasted, and I knew have had 1hour to clean my bathroom. Having it avaible around the clock does also include an option to procrastinate and/or listen in a comfy place 😕
I also have ADHD and do the same thing when I'm working or cooking or cleaning. I've gotten used to it, to the point where watching TH-cam by itself seems too boring. I still have weeks where I don't get anything done (when I'm really in a slump, TH-cam or audiobooks aren't enough to motivate me) so it's not a perfect system, but it helps.
@SkyCommision personally I think that it means the jungle regrows faster and you never quite remember if this was exactly the same path you took as before. I lose habits disturbingly fast if I've for instance been sick for a week and unable to do things as usual. Which is why I started to try to write down the "algorithm" for different habits so that when I forget I can look it up, but I lost a lot of really great habits when I moved to a very distressing situation plus I lost that computer, so now that I'm finally in a better position I have to almost start from scratch :( My memory used to be way better before a year when I had extreme thyroid issues without support from the GP at that place, but I still always temporarily forgot stuff because I constantly had to keep way too much stuff in my active memory (like finding a tan hay straw in a hay stack full of straws of different shades of color)
"Change is a direction, not a destination." Perfect mantra for self improvement! I'm nearing 40, and realizing I've been stuck in a whole lot of bad habits, and feeling like, "well, that's just who I am now." Thanks for helping me realize it's never too late to change.

I absolutely love the production of Kurzgesagt videos but the compilation of ideas here is very similar to a ‘self-help’ book called The Atomic Habit. This makes sense though since they’ll both be based on the same neuroscience and psychology research.
I love that this video doesn’t paint the toddler as the villain, it’s a part of you just like anything else, and you need to learn to work with it, not against it, if you want to see change :)

4:22 "Habits are executed by an impulsive toddler" The comparison is true because just like Toddlers. Habits and Impulses can be tricked. An example of this is me saying "later" to my impulse instead of saying "no". The outright rejection will make The Toddler throw a tantrum in my brain. But stalling for time will eventually make The Toddler forget about the things it wanted to move on to other things that it also wanted so suddenly.
I am going through a big change in my life. I am 1st time living away alone from my parents and friends for studies, which is very scary and depressing. This video can't be posted at better time then this for me...
For the first few months of this year I was on a massive roll in terms of keeping up with routines and smashing out short term and long term goals. But then I lost my momentum and entered this limbo phase where I have been lazy and falling into poor habits. The fact that this video has come out, not even a week after I have decided to get back on track with my goals, is absolutely insane to me. It is almost as if the universe just gave me a wake up call. Thank you guys so much for this video, makes me glad I discovered this channel when it had only a million subscribers
Dont beat yourself up about it, failing sometimes(even a lot) is a part of the process. Remember that youre still miles ahead the version of you that didnt try at all and that loosing momentum and getting it back over and over is consistency in itself. Wish you the best of luck
Thank you so much for this video. Another way I do this is by looking at things like a privilege. I’m only 15 and I’m grateful for having more control over how my life is going to be, and I’m grateful to be young and in good shape. I’m also grateful for having opportunities to study and have access to basic needs, because I hear so many people aren’t fortunate enough to get those things, and really want it. Whenever I don’t make good use of an opportunity, or think of it negatively, I’d think of it as unfair as so many people would really want to be in my position right now, so I may as well make the best of it.

I am going through a very hard time right now, my poor time management skills is risking me my university diploma, I couldn't find the motivation to finish editing my novel, keep learning German a part of my tightly stretched schedule, and my parents are on the brink of a divorce. Broooooo I know what you're going through right now cause I am going through a similar thing too, just high school instead of uni. I can't find the motivation to improve my art skills, and my desire to move out from my parents is getting stronger and stronger. I hope someday we'll be able to see better days ahead of us, and I also hope we become courageous enough to change our lives for the better as well.
i dont want to exaggerate but im in a quite the same situation with you. thank you for sharing your experience, it somehow makes me less anxious, i hope we both can get through this together to a better and brighter future
The 2 minute rule is a great way to turn actions into habits. I always hated doing things like, emptying the bins, cleaning up and folding laundry but if you look at an undesirable action and assess that it would take 2 minutes or less to do, then just do it immediately. You'll find that you end up just doing those things out of habit after a while without it feeling like such a laborious chore.
I learned this to recently. Like thinking of the actual time it takes is amazing. It allows you to give it something. Like music theory, I had a thought that I would never understand a particular concept. So I just said. It's okay, you will learn it in at least one hour. And then I did! It seemed like much less work and bit by bit I understood it til it clicked
- Include triggers (cues that give signals to start): time, place, specific objects, or all of them. - Make doing it fun (add something fun to do to it) - focus on small changes everyday, one step at a time instead of overwhelming yourself with the end goal everytime you want to get started. - start by convincing your brain that it's not that big a deal. - be consistent - break your goals down into small, clear, specific and tangible actions. - always remember that doing small things everyday is better than doing nothing. - it's different for each person how long it will take to pick up a habit.
I'm surprised that neither the video nor the comment mentioned to actually make sure the trigger can be connected to the desired action. Sitting in front of your computer may be a trigger for doing work, but if your brain also often sees it as the trigger to start gaming, you probably won't learn the desired habit.
@@sebastianjost hmmm... maybe if your work involves something you can write down, start writing it by hand, and once you have some momentum, type out what you've written. (I just thought of this right now; I have no idea if it'll work for anybody)
This is absolutely the best life advice I've ever heard & 100% worked for me when I decided to start working out. Start small, but have a PLAN & work your way up. Once it becomes a habit you don't think about it it's just part of your day. Works great with changing your diet as well. Great video.
I've always loved how informative Kurzgesagt is with their videos on various topics. But I've never watched a Kurzgesagt video more helpful to me as an individual as this one. Big props to the team!

This channel, every person behind it and its whole community is one of the best parts about the internet as a whole. There hasn't been a time when I haven't felt better by just listening and watching these videos or talking to other community members. Thank you Kurzgesagt, you make the world brighter!
For those who want a deeper dive into this subject: I would strongly recommend you to read The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg. It explains the different aspects of how habits form, incorporating willpower, cravings, and keystone habits. It also explains how we can change them and why we can't easily do so. Overall, this book really shows an in-depth analysis of habits and change!
I have found out that going when I'm not feeling like it, I end up in a good mood within 5 minutes after entering. Habits: can work the other way around as well 😁
My father, who built himself a home gym ages ago, tried to convince me and my sis to do fitness with him since we were kids, especially me who was a homebuddy and sitting around most of the time and overweight since puberty. He always said: "You need to start, need to force yourself to do it regularly, get used to it. And after a few months, you won't have to force yourself anymore, your body will demand the workout and you will feel like a better person afterwards." I always refused, partly cause my mom was very into me studying till i drop and doing house chores, so my free time was already rare and precious as a student (and i always wanted to paint for that 1 or 2 hours of free time). Now, in my 30s I realize my father was right. Though i don't do the kind of workouts that he himself does (i tell you, he's nearly 60 and even Chloe Ting will be impressed by his workout routine, and he's a fulltime truck driver at that), ever since i started doing Yoga and Pilates, i can't go a day without it (As for my muscle training, I do it every 2-3 days, started only a year ago and way too late and my fluffy old lady body fights it with all its might). So yeah, with fitness it seems to be more true than anything else.
How do you guys do it? I really struggle with doing exercises. Frankly, I just don’t enjoy it at all and convincing myself to do it is always an uphill battle. I had a lot of negative and even slightly traumatic experiences with exercise and sports growing up as a geeky and clumsy guy and I just get really self-conscious about it. I actually kinda hate doing it these days because it feels like a particularly painful, boring, and embarrassing chore.
@@WASDLeftClick Do a form of exercise you enjoy! Do you enjoy lifting weights? Go to the gym and lift some weights. Do you enjoy cycling? Start doing this Etc.
I actually experienced this myself a few years back. I wanted to write more, because I was always too tired after work. So instead I started writing in the morning, between 5 and 6am to give myself lots of time to write. And now, writing is a happy habit. I do it nearly every day, minus days where I'm feeling ill or didn't sleep well. It helped a lot that writing was the first thing I did in the day.
It's been 5 months since I watched this. my life has improved 80% since I followed this advice. it really works, sometimes you may have a relapse when this happens just watch this video again :)
Hey, as a young adult in college, I’m constantly overwhelmed by work done by my peers and their success in a multitude of things. While I’ve been trying to get there myself, I’ve always found myself lacking, because I wasn’t simply consistent enough. This video sorta helps me clear the clutter in my head now and I do feel motivated to work, let’s hope I do achieve my workout goals and work goals. Thanks, kurzgesagt.
I've been there before. While you shouldn't compare yourself too much with others, wanting to strive to better yourself is honorable. You can do it, small steps at a time! Don't worry about tripping and falling, about being down again and falling back into your old ways. That can and most likely will happen. Just keep trying, however long it takes you!
I realized I've been too hard towards myself, setting difficult mountains for me to climb, while also punishing myself severely when I slip up, even if it was insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Thank you for this video, Kurzgesagt! I'll try to be more kind to myself and make the mountain climbs more enjoyable so that eventually it will naturally wove itself into my life.
This is so well timed for me! I'm pursuing a career as a child therapist, and I've been experiencing for myself taking small steps for a greater change!
I'm starting on a journal where I set goals for myself for every month and improving my routine for the next month with everything I learned. I just came up with a quote I'm going to start my journal with: "I didn't start having everything worked out perfectly, I started knowing it's the best way to work everything out." I hope this motivates someone to stop overthinking the thing they want to do and just start doing it. You can do it! you just have to start, dont be too hard on yourself, and keep going.

Pretty much the same here, even tho I'm a couple weeks late to the train. Though I only now saw this video. I've found myself in the middle of some life changing events that have had some really positive effects on my life. Not saying these changes just came by and happened. I've been working on this stuff for a while now, but I can't honestly say that some luck wasn't involved. Anyway, I too have these "instant gratification" habits. I've developed those to cope with anxiety and stress. Now, even when life is starting to look much less bleak, I still have those habits since I've been doing those for years. But now they aren't for coping anymore, they are just extra. And I recently just started to cut off from those unhealthy habits a little by little and I've been trying to replace them with healthier ones. Then I come across this video. Such a great timing as you said and such a great motivation boost. I wish you strength to stay on your path of self-improvement and I'll try my best to do the same. May life treat us as we deserve.

This is just so relatable. One year ago, in the middle of covid pandemic, i had a lot of freetime, and i thought i must workout and change my body once and for all. I was not very strong back then and working out was so intense and tired but i kept doing it everyday in the afternoon. Now, a year later, it becomes a new habit for me. I do exercises almost whenever i have freetime. I don't even have to think about it, and it's really enjoyable now that if i missed 1 training section i will get upset

Quarantining for COVID has really destroyed me mentally. The pandemic has been basically over for like a year now but I still haven’t picked my life back up. It’s funny to me how this channel covers so many nihilistic or depressing topics, but I almost always come away from these videos reminded that the universe can be more than a big dead nothing. All universities sent their students home, the only people I knew who didn’t lose their jobs were state employees and fast food workers. I don’t know what gave you the idea that I believed the quarantine were bad, but I actually quarantined and didn’t go see anyone for a pretty long time because I lived in a high risk area. You can have both positive and negative feelings towards something, you shouldn’t assume someone’s intentions so broadly
Something I love about humans is our desire for habits. They define who we are, and not having any habits can take a toll on our mental health. Just reading all the comments about people suffering from depression who have turned a corner with routine exercise, hobbies, etc. is so heartwarming.
This video alone is what motivated me to do daily exercise, like the day after I watched it, I started to change my life patterns, to exercise more. Currently 4 months in, just above 12 stone right now! Thank you, Kurzgesagt! Edit 1: Still doing relatively well, now BELOW 12 stone! I'm maintaining myself well, and after making this comment, I felt more confident in myself. I still need to gain more confidence because I'll be going to college next year, but I'm doing my best. Man, I have not watched a video this relatable in a while. I have been stuck in the same place for years. I desperately want to change and be a completely different person from my current self, but I've been feeling for a while that maybe that is the wrong approach. Learning to like myself for going in a chosen direction rather than loathing myself for not being where I want to be yet seems like a much healthier way to deal. I’m trying so hard I have PTSD from war in Bosnia from 1992 /1996, since 2012(so it’s been over 10 years of on and off battling and it’s worse during winter), I tried everything and I can’t get myself back on the track. It gets better than it comes back. I’m gonna try this. My major problem is that I don’t really know how to talk about it (therapist or my psychiatrist; i kind keep avoiding and put like a lock on it )and it keeps building up. Just because both teachers have taught the same formula doesnt mean they are copying each other right? cuz in the end the quadratic formula is the same for all. Similarly the science behind learning a habit is the same for all hence the contents and pointers covered in the book maybe the same. Idk if they have actually copied the book or not but it doesn't matter as in the end its done for a good cause and more ppl will be able to employ these tactics in their daily lives and improve!
I always do my squats whenever I make coffee or put something in the microwave, instead of just standing in front of the machine mindlessly while I wait for it. Makes me do more physical activity without thinking or really trying or feeling like I’m going out of the way. The struggle most people have is they try to put way too much effort into something new instead of starting small so they get burnt out almost immediately. Great video!
Yeah because you're already up and doing something. If you work out, then you probably know how difficult it can be to start the workout when you're not already doing something. The video claims that working out will become easier the more we do it but I have been working out for 16 years and it isn't easier. It is only easier if I plan it exactly like you've said in your comment, when I'm already doing something, its easy to transition that momentum into weight lifting. A very crucial detail that's left out in the video and without this detail, saying that difficult tasks become easier to get started on overtime is a false promise.

Ive watched this video countless times over the years (typically while drunk) and being 4 days sober now its all finally starting to come together. If there's one thing ive learned through this time its that you'll never feel ready, but forging ahead regardless of your emotional state is generally a step in the right direction
Keep it up man! And never forget: if ever you stumble, just stand back up. Streaks can be motivating, but losing a streak can be disheartening and demotivating to start again. It's important to remind oneself: you're not starting again, you're still on the same path you were on before.
This video nearly made me cry because I got diagnosed with ADHD about half a year ago and I finally found out the reason why some things feel so difficult. It's like the toddler is mostly in control, and my brain rarely remembers that the planner exists. I think part of the struggle is that it takes more energy to get the "planner" part of my brain going, and also forming habits is more difficult. Like for example, it takes so much energy to keep myself clean and fed because I haven't been able to form concrete habits -- so I have to use the "planner" to make myself take a shower instead of the toddler. Watching this video makes it easier to understand my brain, so thank you!
As I've gotten older, I have found that my autistic traits are much harder to mask. I also have ADHD. Between the two, it can be pretty difficult to get things done. This video resonated with me, though, because I think back to when I was more functional and how I was able to achieve that... and it was with habits. I had certain habits engrained within myself, so the things I needed to do did not seem so hard. It feels hard to get ready and leave my house when I don't do it often. It feels hard to do my makeup when I don't do it often. It never felt hard when I did it every day. I used to wake up and hop in the shower first thing in the morning before school when I was younger. Now? Ha! It takes me forever to drag myself to the shower, and it most certainly does not happen every day. But when I think about all of the time I spend engaging in habits that aren't exactly good for me, and how I start my day by sitting up and looking at my phone, I realize that this one habit can be changed and affect the whole rest of my day, which affects the rest of my week, and the rest of my life. I don't want to die from heart disease, so I have to change my habits. I am working on it, but I could work a little harder.
for me it’s more like i’m made of velcro. any time i sit down, or play on my phone, or do something i’m interested in i get stuck. a normal person would be able to get up off the couch, while i get glued to it. it’s cool to hear how it feels for you tho!

Long time viewer here, I needed this today. Thank you, Kurzgesagt team. My long term girlfriend and I broke up less than a month ago. Since then, I made the decision to start running every single day. I hated it, and still kind of do, but rain or shine I've gone out and run. It has been 24 days, and I feel as though I am on the cusp of making this a regular habit for myself. There is one guy that I need to convince to do it: myself
this can easily be reframed as telling yourself: "just do something". that's something I like to tell myself at least instead of trying to motivate myself and it seems to help

I do tend to think about stuff too much and that convinces me of reasons not to do it. But "Just do it" doesn't always help either. What I like is when he said is to realise that it's not that big of a deal. If you can't shut up your brain the best thing is to convince yourself that it's not the end of the world
I would add 2 things to this:
1. Start with one change at the time. Life is short but it's easier to start small, drastic change will make things worse
2. Regarding bad habits - like checking reddit/insta/anything - remember that you stand against whole teams that design this to be more time consuming, so try to avoid it but be understanding for yourself
i've just seen the social dilemma and no. 2 is absolutely right
I am pretty good at stopping bad habits but It started as a kid. I didn't like that I went on fb all the time as it was just full of garbage and now I am not on any social media and I don't watch the news. but it was really easy. The hard part is people are always asking me, whats my snap, insta or fb.
Checking Reddit doesnt need to be a bad thing, waste of time. U can actually do useful things there and read something interesting/learn.

I love how Kurzgesagt can change up their content to help people out with their goals by breaking down the science behind the brain’s patterns when it comes to triggers and habits, then offering genuine helpful advice on how to achieve our goals effectively. Like they’ve mentioned, in order to change is by making little goals and little changes because your progress will accumulate over time through consistency. Just experiment and find out what works for you since it’s different with everyone. This is a really nice video.

Nice ideas. Here are my four to add:
1. Remove boundaries to starting: if you're want to practise guitar more then leave it out and plugged in. Make it so you can just walk past, play for 5 mins then get on with something else. It has to be as easy as possible.
2. Become aware of the things that stop you - sometimes quite small random things, like the guitar is always out of tune (so buy a tuner), or the only time you get to practise everyone is already in bed (so use some headphones) or it's difficult to hold the guitar on your bed (so find a good chair and move it next to your amp)
3. Remove pressure - if you're doing it to be famous then you're always going to feel the pressure to achieve. You've got to do it primarily because you love it.
4. and this is key for me - Acknowledge you only have limited energy. It can feel like if you have 5 free hours then you can do one hour of guitar practise, an hour of exercise, an hour to read your book, an hour to cook, etc. But in reality each activity has not only a physical cost, but also a mental load. Acknowledge the mental load, then free yourself of it. If you have a stressful job then you probably won't do your hobby - the job has taken all your mental load and that is why you're watching Netflix for 5 hours.
5. You do not have to change the world. It's ok, there are already plenty of authors, musicians, entertainers, photographers, etc. You can just do this for fun. Just honestly and seriously, start from the position that the world does not need you to do this thing, and will not care if you never do it. And now just do it anyway - do it for yourself.
Regarding #4 if you take 10-20 naps or Meditations in-between what you are trying yo learn and during that time you think about your mistakes and how to do better and then imagine you doing it properly you will return with more energy without stopping your practice.
Resurce the difference between visualization vs imagination and look up catastrophic thinking.

The thing is, for any given small action to have a big impact, it is extremely rare, yes, turning left or right could impact your whole life, but that doesn't happen often. Time travelers knows exactly which moment it is because they've experienced the other option already and traced it back to that one point, but we now in the present don't know, and often it isn't worth it to do the extra thing just because it might impact your life one day.

We're so used to ads bombarding us with "YOU NEED THIS!!" or "DON'T MISS OUT!!!" that it almost feels too good to be true when we see authentic and healthy advertising. We desperately need more of this, much, much more!!
But you need to buy it, you need a lot of money to have good food, good supporting books, pay for internet, pay for music that inspires you or helps you move for exercises or housework, you need to pay for everything even water, that's what makes life monotonous pointless and boring, the main reason why as humans we are worth it and we don't mind dying young, it is the best option

@@xiebunlian You can make good meals out of rice/quinoa/pasta, beans/lentils, frozen/canned veggies, and spices-all cheap options for food (unless you're trying to make something with saffron or pine nuts). Buy meats when they are on sale. Books can be rented from the library, as can the internet. There are free wifi hotspots all around the city. Music can be streamed for free and also rented from the library. Yes, it's unfortunate that utilities cost money, but life doesn't have to be as expensive if you're willing to find better and cheaper ways of doing things. Just takes a little more effort than paying higher prices for near-instant results.

One year after this video, I have actually started changing myself (started about 2 months ago) it's not a significant amount of change but it definitely it noticeable! and I am super proud of myself. Before I used to just sit around all day browsing youtube and reddit and discord and literally doing nothing. Now I'm actually doing my work on time and started studying a few days before exams. Can't wait to work hard and get even better!

It's important to point out that bragging about how good you think you've done can tumble the card house you've build. If you feel better with what you've done, better keep it for your self and be happy about it.
Im not even joking, Kurzgesagt explains everything so strategically and logically, and really places the same idea in one's mind which teachers and etc. have been trying for so long. I can't believe how motivated I am currently to also leave all my bad habits.
Don't try to quit all of them at once! That motivation will run out really fast. Instead, try to pick the most important one, the one that will have the most impact on your life if you leave it behind. Start there, see what works for you, then you can keep going down the list :)

@@The_Good_Captain It depends. Don't just blindly reach out and help everyone you see because that is a recipe for stretching yourself out. However there is sometimes in this world a time where a person close to you loses a bit of themselves for one reason or another. And that person will lose the will to live or the motivation to better themselves. If you truly care for this person it is your duty to reach out and give that your best effort to help them within your own means. Do not ever give more than you are comfortable with and if you have to push past that barrier at times make sure to find the time to set boundaries and establish communication about where those boundaries are with the person in question. Unfortunately yes you may start to see a pattern where this person you care about is blowing past your patience and then you may start to lose the ability to care. They may continually ask too much and go past the boundaries. And in these cases it may be a good time to reassess if the person you care about requires more help from an outside source. Another friend or family member maybe. And if in the end this person really can't help themselves like you first thought and has evidenced to hurt others and themselves without improvement and maybe even has slid backwards over time. perhaps that is the time to have an intervention to let them know explicitly where there problems are and how they negatively affecting others. You can provide avenues for help like therapists in the area or support groups. But then, With effort and communication and understanding you can responsibly cut them out of your life until they help themselves. Because then you will at least communicated the tools to help them fish for themselves.
This is only if you initially believe in them and you believe in the long-term friendship or relationship. It truly is up to discretion but sometimes it is necessary to pull from within to help the ones we love. But we always have to do it responsibly.
That first one makes me feel a lot. I can see how I have been living the past 12 years in fear from trauma. Fear of other people. Loved ones did terrible things to me, multiple different loved ones, and it's been very difficult to find strangers that want to become more than strangers and help support me.

Pretty accurate. I got into exercise by just automatically driving to the gym after work. Then I wouldn't let myself leave until I went in and did at least one exercise. Then afterwards, I was always like "well, I've already started, and I'd look silly if I left now... I may as well finish the whole workout". It still surprises me how effective that strategy was for me. It might not work for everyone, but I encourage giving it a try if you want to exercise regularly. And he's right. The first few weeks were miserable. Now, not getting my scheduled exercise in is miserable. The human brain is amazing.

Something that worked for me too was listening to an audio book at the gym, but I could ONLY listen to it there! So if I wanted to know what happened next in the story... I had to go to the gym! I also found setting a realistic goal then a bonus goal helped... a bit of brain trickery there but ... basically I'd love to go 3x a week! But making that my goal lead to a lot of "failure" feelings if I only went 2x.... so I adjusted my goal to be 2x so I always meet it, and 3x is a bonus! HUMAN BRAINS man.... so crazy XD

I always seem to fall out of my habits because I put too much pressure on myself to be perfect from the beginning. Small steps are still steps, change doesn’t happen over night. I've been struggling with depression for about 11-12 years now. I have very similar experiences with habits as you do. Especially when it comes to hobbies. I have a graphics tablet for drawing, as well as an expensive digital piano just sitting around collecting dust because I feel like I' m unable to change.
I just hope that my move and my (belated) start in college in a few months can help me at least a little bit in changing.

This sounds really familiar. I almost always overperformed until last year I completely broke and was diagnozed with anxiety dissorder and alarmingly bad deppression. I am now much better but like the video said change happens in small steps you can control. And you should be happy about them even if they seem small at first. Use all the time you need and be happy about the small things and when things are tough ask people around you for support as most of us are eager to help as we all have faced something that has been hard or taxing. Most of us want other people to succeed too and its as painful to experience those things yourself as it is to watch someone face their demons and challenges. Keep up people and dont let those setbacks slow you too much. Take your time and enjoy the little things this live has to offer. If you read all of this I wish a awesome day and to have the power to carry on. You are awesome always remember that.

Time to play the piano again
I live an unhealthy lifestyle. (I turn my days and nights around, don't go outside, don't brush my teeth, etc.). I try to take action but always fail on the second day. And until today, I was at a loss. Then, as usual, I was browsing TH-cam and found this video, watched it right away, and right after that, I wrote down a few things I wanted to make into habits. (Brush your teeth, exercise, etc.). Then, an hour later, I started doing one of those things. Then, to my surprise, I accomplished everything I had written on the list, even though I thought that if I could do even one of those things, I would have done well. I was amazed. It was so easy that it was ridiculous that I kept worrying about it. ...... I need to repeat it many more times to make it a habit, but I believe I can do it this time.

Me too I’m joining the construction laborers union. On the 20th I’m going to a week long training session where they would put me in various physical tests to test my endurance and strength since it’s very important to have both of those in this field. Im doing this as a 19 year old. I have to be in my best shape to do rigorous and long inducing work which I’m familiar with. Shifts will be 10-12 hours on average. Dropped out of college to start with a 28/hr starting pay with benefits as an apprentice which is really good and one of the reasons why I dropped out of school. I do plan on joining college again but once I’ve gotten my fair share of cash on hand I hate the idea of having student debt. I guess this is the next step in my life and I wish anyone else good luck in whatever they are planning to do..

I was in similar situation to Bojack but when the runner says that, you understand why he says that and the difficulty of doing it every day,which is the hardest part. I can do any new activity for a week or two but after I lose my focus

The hard part isn't starting a new habit - the hard part is dealing with everyday stresses that frustrate you and you fall back into the same habit that the everyday stresses probably turned you on to. Like comfort food stress eating. It's hard when you deal with the stresses day after day and you have few options to help you deal with them, and trying a new habit more often than nots put even more stress on you because it's not routine.

When about to stress eat,remembering how bad it feels after stress eating using this thought to use a nother coping mechanism like,meditation,grounding exercise,or smth else. I have ADHD, so simple things like getting in the shower or making breakfast feel like a chore. I tricked myself into doing this stuff because I put music when I shower, so simply by opening the Spotify app I "trigger" the shower response, and I put video essays when I cook. So not only do I have the stimulation I need to not get distracted, but I also started looking forward to this stuff! I had no idea I could apply this stuff to other things, or that it was a known process. I wonder how I can implement it in more aspects of my life.
I have adhd also and cooking and cleaning with videos or podcast is helpful for me. Unfortunately these things are avaible around the clock. It used to be more easy, when I had a special time when special radio program was broadcasted, and I knew have had 1hour to clean my bathroom.
Having it avaible around the clock does also include an option to procrastinate and/or listen in a comfy place 😕
I have done the same kind of things to try and help me be less distracted! it helps for the most part. I'm still working on a few things haha😅
I also have ADHD and do the same thing when I'm working or cooking or cleaning. I've gotten used to it, to the point where watching TH-cam by itself seems too boring. I still have weeks where I don't get anything done (when I'm really in a slump, TH-cam or audiobooks aren't enough to motivate me) so it's not a perfect system, but it helps.
Yeah, bundling chores with stimulating things is pretty necessary to get stuff done with ADHD :(
@SkyCommision personally I think that it means the jungle regrows faster and you never quite remember if this was exactly the same path you took as before. I lose habits disturbingly fast if I've for instance been sick for a week and unable to do things as usual. Which is why I started to try to write down the "algorithm" for different habits so that when I forget I can look it up, but I lost a lot of really great habits when I moved to a very distressing situation plus I lost that computer, so now that I'm finally in a better position I have to almost start from scratch :(
My memory used to be way better before a year when I had extreme thyroid issues without support from the GP at that place, but I still always temporarily forgot stuff because I constantly had to keep way too much stuff in my active memory (like finding a tan hay straw in a hay stack full of straws of different shades of color)

I absolutely love the production of Kurzgesagt videos but the compilation of ideas here is very similar to a ‘self-help’ book called The Atomic Habit. This makes sense though since they’ll both be based on the same neuroscience and psychology research.

The comparison is true because just like Toddlers. Habits and Impulses can be tricked. An example of this is me saying "later" to my impulse instead of saying "no". The outright rejection will make The Toddler throw a tantrum in my brain. But stalling for time will eventually make The Toddler forget about the things it wanted to move on to other things that it also wanted so suddenly.

For the first few months of this year I was on a massive roll in terms of keeping up with routines and smashing out short term and long term goals. But then I lost my momentum and entered this limbo phase where I have been lazy and falling into poor habits. Thank you so much for this video. Another way I do this is by looking at things like a privilege. I’m only 15 and I’m grateful for having more control over how my life is going to be, and I’m grateful to be young and in good shape. I’m also grateful for having opportunities to study and have access to basic needs, because I hear so many people aren’t fortunate enough to get those things, and really want it. Whenever I don’t make good use of an opportunity, or think of it negatively, I’d think of it as unfair as so many people would really want to be in my position right now, so I may as well make the best of it.

The 2 minute rule is a great way to turn actions into habits. I always hated doing things like, emptying the bins, cleaning up and folding laundry but if you look at an undesirable action and assess that it would take 2 minutes or less to do, then just do it immediately. You'll find that you end up just doing those things out of habit after a while without it feeling like such a laborious chore.
I learned this to recently. Like thinking of the actual time it takes is amazing. It allows you to give it something.
Like music theory, I had a thought that I would never understand a particular concept. So I just said. It's okay, you will learn it in at least one hour.
And then I did!
It seemed like much less work and bit by bit I understood it til it clicked
- Include triggers (cues that give signals to start): time, place, specific objects, or all of them.
- Make doing it fun (add something fun to do to it)
- focus on small changes everyday, one step at a time instead of overwhelming yourself with the end goal everytime you want to get started.
- start by convincing your brain that it's not that big a deal.
- be consistent
- break your goals down into small, clear, specific and tangible actions.
- always remember that doing small things everyday is better than doing nothing.
- it's different for each person how long it will take to pick up a habit.

This is absolutely the best life advice I've ever heard & 100% worked for me when I decided to start working out. Start small, but have a PLAN & work your way up. Once it becomes a habit you don't think about it it's just part of your day. Works great with changing your diet as well. Great video.

For those who want a deeper dive into this subject: I would strongly recommend you to read The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg. It explains the different aspects of how habits form, incorporating willpower, cravings, and keystone habits. It also explains how we can change them and why we can't easily do so. Overall, this book really shows an in-depth analysis of habits and change!
Discipline equals freedom is also a good book on the subject it helps you get trough the first part

I go to the GYM since 2014, I won't go only if I'm sick or traveling. The option of not going doesn't exist for me, it gets easier with time!
I have found out that going when I'm not feeling like it, I end up in a good mood within 5 minutes after entering. Habits: can work the other way around as well 😁
My father, who built himself a home gym ages ago, tried to convince me and my sis to do fitness with him since we were kids, especially me who was a homebuddy and sitting around most of the time and overweight since puberty. He always said: "You need to start, need to force yourself to do it regularly, get used to it. And after a few months, you won't have to force yourself anymore, your body will demand the workout and you will feel like a better person afterwards."
I always refused, partly cause my mom was very into me studying till i drop and doing house chores, so my free time was already rare and precious as a student (and i always wanted to paint for that 1 or 2 hours of free time).
Now, in my 30s I realize my father was right. Though i don't do the kind of workouts that he himself does (i tell you, he's nearly 60 and even Chloe Ting will be impressed by his workout routine, and he's a fulltime truck driver at that), ever since i started doing Yoga and Pilates, i can't go a day without it (As for my muscle training, I do it every 2-3 days, started only a year ago and way too late and my fluffy old lady body fights it with all its might). So yeah, with fitness it seems to be more true than anything else.
How do you guys do it? I really struggle with doing exercises. Frankly, I just don’t enjoy it at all and convincing myself to do it is always an uphill battle. I had a lot of negative and even slightly traumatic experiences with exercise and sports growing up as a geeky and clumsy guy and I just get really self-conscious about it. I actually kinda hate doing it these days because it feels like a particularly painful, boring, and embarrassing chore.

I actually experienced this myself a few years back. I wanted to write more, because I was always too tired after work. So instead I started writing in the morning, between 5 and 6am to give myself lots of time to write. And now, writing is a happy habit. I do it nearly every day, minus days where I'm feeling ill or didn't sleep well. It helped a lot that writing was the first thing I did in the day.

I've been there before. While you shouldn't compare yourself too much with others, wanting to strive to better yourself is honorable. You can do it, small steps at a time! Don't worry about tripping and falling, about being down again and falling back into your old ways. That can and most likely will happen. Just keep trying, however long it takes you!

I realized I've been too hard towards myself, setting difficult mountains for me to climb, while also punishing myself severely when I slip up, even if it was insignificant in the grand scheme of things. I'm starting on a journal where I set goals for myself for every month and improving my routine for the next month with everything I learned. I just came up with a quote I'm going to start my journal with: "I didn't start having everything worked out perfectly, I started knowing it's the best way to work everything out." I hope this motivates someone to stop overthinking the thing they want to do and just start doing it. You can do it! you just have to start, dont be too hard on yourself, and keep going.

Pretty much the same here, even tho I'm a couple weeks late to the train. Though I only now saw this video. I've found myself in the middle of some life changing events that have had some really positive effects on my life. Not saying these changes just came by and happened. I've been working on this stuff for a while now, but I can't honestly say that some luck wasn't involved. Anyway, I too have these "instant gratification" habits. I've developed those to cope with anxiety and stress. Now, even when life is starting to look much less bleak, I still have those habits since I've been doing those for years. But now they aren't for coping anymore, they are just extra. And I recently just started to cut off from those unhealthy habits a little by little and I've been trying to replace them with healthier ones. Then I come across this video. Such a great timing as you said and such a great motivation boost. I wish you strength to stay on your path of self-improvement and I'll try my best to do the same. May life treat us as we deserve.

This is just so relatable. One year ago, in the middle of covid pandemic, i had a lot of freetime, and i thought i must workout and change my body once and for all. I was not very strong back then and working out was so intense and tired but i kept doing it everyday in the afternoon. Now, a year later, it becomes a new habit for me. I do exercises almost whenever i have freetime. I don't even have to think about it, and it's really enjoyable now that if i missed 1 training section i will get upset

Quarantining for COVID has really destroyed me mentally. The pandemic has been basically over for like a year now but I still haven’t picked my life back up. It’s funny to me how this channel covers so many nihilistic or depressing topics, but I almost always come away from these videos reminded that the universe can be more than a big dead nothing. @@igggoshastudios7802 really I’m happy for you that all that changed in your life during that time is you had to wear a mask at the grocery store but a lot of people were not that lucky. All universities sent their students home, the only people I knew who didn’t lose their jobs were state employees and fast food workers. I don’t know what gave you the idea that I believed the quarantine were bad, but I actually quarantined and didn’t go see anyone for a pretty long time because I lived in a high risk area. You can have both positive and negative feelings towards something, you shouldn’t assume someone’s intentions so broadly

Something I love about humans is our desire for habits. They define who we are, and not having any habits can take a toll on our mental health. Just reading all the comments about people suffering from depression who have turned a corner with routine exercise, hobbies, etc. is so heartwarming.
This video alone is what motivated me to do daily exercise, like the day after I watched it, I started to change my life patterns, to exercise more. Currently 4 months in, just above 12 stone right now! Thank you, Kurzgesagt!

I’m trying so hard I have PTSD from war in Bosnia from 1992 /1996, since 2012(so it’s been over 10 years of on and off battling and it’s worse during winter), I tried everything and I can’t get myself back on the track. It gets better than it comes back. I’m gonna try this. My major problem is that I don’t really know how to talk about it (therapist or my psychiatrist; i kind keep avoiding and put like a lock on it )and it keeps building up. Just because both teachers have taught the same formula doesnt mean they are copying each other right? cuz in the end the quadratic formula is the same for all. Similarly the science behind learning a habit is the same for all hence the contents and pointers covered in the book maybe the same.
Idk if they have actually copied the book or not but it doesn't matter as in the end its done for a good cause and more ppl will be able to employ these tactics in their daily lives and improve!

I was so affected by video that I started to think ''I must start working out'' while I'm already doing it for a year now.
I always do my squats whenever I make coffee or put something in the microwave, instead of just standing in front of the machine mindlessly while I wait for it. Makes me do more physical activity without thinking or really trying or feeling like I’m going out of the way. The struggle most people have is they try to put way too much effort into something new instead of starting small so they get burnt out almost immediately. Great video!
Yeah because you're already up and doing something. If you work out, then you probably know how difficult it can be to start the workout when you're not already doing something. The video claims that working out will become easier the more we do it but I have been working out for 16 years and it isn't easier. It is only easier if I plan it exactly like you've said in your comment, when I'm already doing something, its easy to transition that momentum into weight lifting. A very crucial detail that's left out in the video and without this detail, saying that difficult tasks become easier to get started on overtime is a false promise.

Ive watched this video countless times over the years (typically while drunk) and being 4 days sober now its all finally starting to come together. If there's one thing ive learned through this time its that you'll never feel ready, but forging ahead regardless of your emotional state is generally a step in the right direction
Keep it up man! And never forget: if ever you stumble, just stand back up. Streaks can be motivating, but losing a streak can be disheartening and demotivating to start again. It's important to remind oneself: you're not starting again, you're still on the same path you were on before.
Just remember, if you relapse its okay. But just dont give up trying.

This video nearly made me cry because I got diagnosed with ADHD about half a year ago and I finally found out the reason why some things feel so difficult. It's like the toddler is mostly in control, and my brain rarely remembers that the planner exists. I think part of the struggle is that it takes more energy to get the "planner" part of my brain going, and also forming habits is more difficult. Like for example, it takes so much energy to keep myself clean and fed because I haven't been able to form concrete habits -- so I have to use the "planner" to make myself take a shower instead of the toddler. Watching this video makes it easier to understand my brain, so thank you!

As I've gotten older, I have found that my autistic traits are much harder to mask. I also have ADHD. Between the two, it can be pretty difficult to get things done. This video resonated with me, though, because I think back to when I was more functional and how I was able to achieve that... and it was with habits. I had certain habits engrained within myself, so the things I needed to do did not seem so hard. It feels hard to get ready and leave my house when I don't do it often. It feels hard to do my makeup when I don't do it often. It never felt hard when I did it every day. I used to wake up and hop in the shower first thing in the morning before school when I was younger. Now? Ha! It takes me forever to drag myself to the shower, and it most certainly does not happen every day. But when I think about all of the time I spend engaging in habits that aren't exactly good for me, and how I start my day by sitting up and looking at my phone, I realize that this one habit can be changed and affect the whole rest of my day, which affects the rest of my week, and the rest of my life. I don't want to die from heart disease, so I have to change my habits. I am working on it, but I could work a little harder.
for me it’s more like i’m made of velcro. any time i sit down, or play on my phone, or do something i’m interested in i get stuck. a normal person would be able to get up off the couch, while i get glued to it. it’s cool to hear how it feels for you tho!

My long term girlfriend and I broke up less than a month ago. Since then, I made the decision to start running every single day. I hated it, and still kind of do, but rain or shine I've gone out and run. It has been 24 days, and I feel as though I am on the cusp of making this a regular habit for myself. Every day gets a little easier and I find I've actually started to enjoy challenging myself and my pace.
