Just weaker from the baseline but not as easy to out ground stroke than you would think according to those who uses to play against him. The serve/chip and charge is his deal of course. Crazy fast back in the day, perfect ball placement and a tactical genius with reflexes like no one has ever had.

    McEnroe has continued to play competitive tennis at a high level right up to this day. He never stopped even though he retired many years ago. Sampras is much younger than McEnroe here but he stepped away from the game for quite some time and it shows. He hasn't aged well and all that time away from the court has eroded his game. It is the same for Lendl, who actually put on quite a bit of weight after not playing tennis for a long time. I watched him in a match and he was pretty bad. I think he's improved since and gotten in a bit better shape but like anything else, if you stop you lose it. I don't think Sampras has the same interest in the seniors champion tour that others have, he seems to be happy to be away from the game.

    Good to see a new upload of a recent match with Mac in it. His game is still as wondrous as the first time I saw him play. They should make a new age class on the champions tour for him and the other guys his age, like 50+. I bet he´d dominate that tour like he did on the champions tour in the mid 90´s and onwards. He really set some standards there after he quit on the ATP. It is said that McEnroe hated to work out in the gym back in his prime, but now that he´s going on 60 he definitely looks fit. ;)

    • @datacipher
      @datacipher 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      There's nothing to prove. Unless you want to know whether a 58 year old man could beat the top woman. It's an open question - but that only shows how far the women are behind the men. You hardly need Mcenroe to prove that though if you know tennis. Top junior boys and middling college players regularly beat the top women - which is why they're chosen as training partners.

    • @alanfrost75
      @alanfrost75 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      There is a doubles match from some years back when Edberg and Wozniacki play against Venus and Chang. All else aside, what struck me was the ease with which Edberg took anything Venus threw at him. It was so weird, when she hit the ball on her end it looked fast, almost violent, but when it got to Edberg's side he returned it effortlessly, with his classic ultra-shitty forehand, as if he were on the training grounds. Now granted Edberg was in his early 40s at that stage, so of course he would beat any female player, but the odd thing was just how easily he handled those shots. He just seemed to glide around while on the other side of the court there was grunting and squealing and sweat :D
      I for one would love to see if a 58 year old could win. I think Mac has dropped significantly in ability in the last 5 years - which is natural of course and the man is still a superhero in my book. So it would be a very interesting match.

    I have nothing but admiration for Mac, and he is the first player I liked way back when I was 7 years old. However, they need to split up the champions tournament. Sampras was running at 75% at most. I dont think I saw him approach the net one time in all the highlights. Sometimes he seemed to give Mac an easy return and be surprised that it ended up being a winner. Again, no disrespect, but this is not a fair matchup. Sampras is two tennis generations younger than Mac.

    • @danmeadowsmusic
      @danmeadowsmusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One generation. They're 14 years apart, tennis players tend to turn pro when they're 19ish and retire in their early 30s.

    • @alanfrost75
      @alanfrost75 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I dont think one usually counts the entire career span. I mean, you hear players talking of the young generation and referring to current players that entered the scene while they were still playing. Sampras and Agassi where "the new generation" back in Lendl's era. Lendl in turn was part of the new generation when Borg and Mac were going at it. It seems to be about half your career before a "young generation" starts popping up.
      I always regarded a generation to refer to players who mostly competed against each other in their peak - so Mac/Borg, Lendl/Edberg/Becker/Wilander, Sampras/Agassi/Courier.

    • @akosh1976

    • @j0lty875
      @j0lty875 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well I think part of the reason why McEnroe still puts in a lot of time at the courts is because he wants to enjoy tennis as long as he can, and play the younger players who his career never overlapped with. So if they split up the league, then you would never potentially see McEnroe vs Federer in 10 years, for example. :P

    • @michelez715
      @michelez715 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sampras started as a baseliner with very solid groundstrokes, before he became a serve and volleyer. He played either style when he needed to, depending on the surface. An all court player.

    C'mon people. Pete is a legend and Pete can obviously still hit the ball with power and precision. But tennis is much much more than that. Stamina and fitness is something Pete doesn't have and cannot have anymore. He can't compete in the tour anymore.

    I'm sure McEnroe would beat lots of players who overtook him in the middle 80's just by being younger and more powerful. Their prime also being over, the greater talent again would make the difference. Sampras may be an exception, the greatest of them all and actually another generation younger. But Boris Becker for example would have no chance against him now.

    i think some players try harder and really want to win and others take it as almost like a exhibition and for fun and give maybe 50% and want to make every match close for the fans... for example, just this year in 2018 in one set you had in the hawaii tournament you had TOMMY HAAS barely beating mcenroe 7-5 in the final! really? REALLY? tommy haas young enough to be mcenroe's son, the same tommy haas who just retired last year! the same tommy haas who was one of the very very few players to beat ROGER FEDERER on grass last year, can barely beat pushing 60 mcenroe?! COME ON!...

    • @stefanthomassen4750
      @stefanthomassen4750 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you really think, if tommy would go full speed, he easily beat John 6:0 / 6:0... but he was good educated and so he let John win 5 games ;-) He lost this year with 42 years against Dominic Thiem 6:7 / 3:6 ;-)

      You make me laugh at your rationale. Based upon your reason, Djokovic is better than Sampras ? I'm a huge Nadal's fan, but let me tell you, none of these two come close to Pete's talent. Federer is the closest to Sampras' elegance when playing and remember, Pete's is Federer's idol.

      in my opinion Nadal and Federer are the best in history and their Grandslams titles 15-18 show that
      - on the other hand Novak djokovic needs first to break sampreas record in slams to considered better than him
      - as I remember Federer idol Is laver not sampreas Federer always say that laver in his opinion best player in history
