I've been watching (and playing) tennis avidly since the mid-70's. In terms of quality of play and shotmaking, this is the best match I've ever seen. And yes, these guys would be great in any era. In fact, I'd love to see Becker and Sampras in their prime with the newer co-poly strings, which have made such a huge impact on the sport.
True, but these co-poly strings and oversized rackets mainly suit baseliners on much slower courts. Neither Becker's nor Sampras' game was designed for that. So I don't think they would have done well. Likewise, the big 3 wouldn't have done well on those much faster courts and without those strings. Federer is probably an exception.
I haven’t watched this match before, simply an eye-opener. Two talented tennis players in their prime. I am a diehard fan of Sampras, but I also appreciate the talents of Becker. Both are great and genius. It’s amazing to see how fast they reacted, especially the unbelievable and perfect volleys.
I can’t believe how amazing that last rally was 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I literally screamed out with disappointment when Becker hit that to the net…I was a HUGE SAMPRAS FAN and still think he was the Greatest but Becker was just as great from mid 80s to mid 90s ♥️♥️♥️

I had only seen these two play at Wimbledon (1993, 95 & 97). Pleasant surprise to see them rallying from baseline. But none was a pusher. Both tried to find angles and finish points! And I had rarely seen Sampras scream and pump his fist!
Becker was outstanding indoors, ofc Sampras, too. Two of the best ever on carpet. This match has to be among those that produced the highest level of attacking tennis. Maybe Beckers best match of his career even though he lost it. The inside out volley of Becker is such a beauty to watch. Right out of the books.
1985-2000 was a period of most talented players. Almost 15 players who competed against each other and even won GS. Mcenroe, Connors, Mats Wilander, Lendl, Edberg, Becker, Sampras, Agassi, Ivanisevic, Pat Rafter, Jim Courier, Michael Stich, Kuerten, and some more players.
Two great champions producing a great match and what a great moment at the net from both the players that's why everyone watches tennis. Sampras Vs Becker was a box office match those days along with matches with agassi courier stich lendl Chang etc etc
Superb match. Pistol Pete remains the best player I've ever seen, but forgotten how good Becker was. This is how tennis shd be played on a fast court, imo - serve and volley, and attacking. This match had that, but also wonderful passing shots and half volleys. Also great not to have endless ball bouncing before the serve, grunting, and (pre Covid) constant towelling off between points.
Well, you can tell right here, why Pete essentially ended Becker's dominance. He's just slightly better than Boris, in 3 facets, and Boris is only Petes equal, in all of the others. Hes faster, more agile and had a slightly more accurate serve. The vast majority of the times they but, Pete was just slightly tooa good.
Either this one or the other one they played indoors, the same year? Anyway, the Sampras-Becker match-up in the mid 90's at its best was the greatest tennis ever produced, to this day!
When watching this back again you can clearly see how this easily equates to some of the great matches we see today. 90s tennis was up with today in terms of quality. Perfect gameplans for those faster balls. Narrative we get sold is that the big 3 are way above all other generations. Its simply not true. Plus masters 1000 and atp final matches should be best of 5 still. Proper matches
for me this was the best pete ever was - combination of great hitting ability, mature game sense, and peak athleticism. a marvel to watch, and a match for any player of any era.
it shows this match was a real tough one. That was only break Sampras could have. Beating Becker under a roof, in Germany, was nearly impossible at that time.
This is my favorite type of Tennis. Serve and volleying. Baseline rallies. Fast tennis. All court skills displayed. Today's tennis is mainly back and forth to see who can outgrind who. Federer could do it all. He's the last of a dying breed.

@@anthonyroberts79 Agree! In terms of outfit though, the 90s win for me no speculation needed haha!!!
this level of tennis is just insane. The variation and attacking style.. Todays tennis is a chore to watch in comparison.
Two Real Champions. What a match !!!
You will never see this kind of match, ever again in today's game.
I really wanted to have a serve like Boris Becker because it looks like his wind up to hitting the ball is so damn cool lol
I remember that match. Respect to both. Every game of this duel was pure heaven for tennis fans.
Two titans of tennis played magnificently...that is tennis!!!!
14:24 I don't think I've ever seen Sampras show any expression of emotion in a match. Even the crowd didn't know how to react to such an unusual display from him.
That was a terrific match. So close. Becker really took it to Pete. Nice to remember how good Boris was.
One of the best matches I watched and 2 of my favourite players in peak form
what a Tennis Match , Pete vs Boris, Highclass Serve and Volley ,miss that Times
What an unbelievable match! And that embrace at the end!!
Becker's start of the match with 4 straight aces should have been included in this highlight.
Funny, that is how I remember the most about this match!!
Becker was able to get incredible angle on his out wide deuce court serve.
And 3 aces to confirm his sensational break
Such a beautiful match... Extremely good skills from the two legends😍😍
My two favorite players growing up! Man, I loved watching them play!
Two best players of their respective generations .
Amazing how Becker's technique changed into a more modern game by this point.
Two great champions producing a great match and what a great moment at the net from both the players that's why everyone watches tennis. Sampras Vs Becker was a box office match those days along with matches with agassi courier stich lendl Chang etc etc
Das ist fantastisch. Sehr gut . Wir vermissen Boris . er war unglaublich.
“During the first set, he was playing the best tennis I have played against.” (Sampras After The Match About Becker)
I forgot what amazing hand skills Becker had, what a quality player.
many people forget these are and always will be the Titans of tennis...
I remember that match ! Two of my all time faves ! Two titans ! Much respect ✊🏽
Quel match , revoir sampras et beker . Quel plaisir. Et revers à 1 main .
The greatest indoor tennis match ever played
Quite possibly - it was magnificent.
Either this one or the other one they played indoors, the same year? Anyway, the Sampras-Becker match-up in the mid 90's at its best was the greatest tennis ever produced, to this day!
This tennis looks so clean.
Cant really explain what it is to be clean but there it is.
Absolutely spot on. This match was as great as anything played before or since.
for me this was the best pete ever was - combination of great hitting ability, mature game sense, and peak athleticism. a marvel to watch, and a match for any player of any era.
14:21 What a roar, a rare attitude coming from Sampras.
it shows this match was a real tough one. That was only break Sampras could have.
Beating Becker under a roof, in Germany, was nearly impossible at that time.
@@kwansikkim8712: But, in the long run, Sampras owned Becker, even under the German roof.
@@notsohandytim5090Weak fanboy response.
@@blake7871: Just stating the facts. So sorry your heart is still broken. 😭
@notsohandytim5090 I'm a fan of both. Just pointing out the obvious.
One of the greatest matches ever played, period!
Hope that one day this style of fast court tennis will return.
Probably one of the best match ever and the best ATP finals played.
One of the best matches of all time.
A hug at the net when hugs at the net were not a thing. Thats how good this match was.
SO much better than today’s slugfests. Proper fast tennis.
Yeah, screw that top spin bonanza...
I agree, I like topspin but flat is way more fun
Looooool I heared your comment imagining you're a proper lad in your late 50s drinking a beer
@@meilstone the best is a blend of contrasting styles, not just one.
ATP and ITF don't care about tennis, they care about money hence the homogenization of the court speeds.
The net level looks way higher than nowadays, amazing footage
Amazing, stunnig, wonderful tennis.
Beautiful to see the german crowd cheering after Sampras win. Very respectful.
Wow. I forget how strong Pete and Boris were. Just great to see this brand of tennis.
Not a single grunt. Amazing.
Becker’s one handed backhand is fire 🔥
This is my favorite type of Tennis. Serve and volleying. Baseline rallies. Fast tennis. All court skills displayed. Today's tennis is mainly back and forth to see who can outgrind who. Federer could do it all. He's the last of a dying breed.
