    Its a pity that Guga had such a short "prime" career due to his hip injury. Im pretty sure he would be considered as legend as players like Wilander, Becker, Edberg and even Agassi, if he played at his prime for longer, free of severe injuries. My guess is at least 6 GS (+2RG +1USO), 15 MS and nothing less than 90 to 100 weeks at N1.

    • @incredibleXMan
      @incredibleXMan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

But he started to play really well on cement by the year of 2000 (the beggining of his prime) and had a period of less than 2 years before the hip injury start to damper his performance. He was a "big match" player, imagine the period between 02-04, with no Sampras around, with some great players reaching their retirement. The scenario was promising.

      Kuerten was one of the best clay court players ever but he also managed to win 6 ATP titles on hard surfaces (including an indoors masters cup beating sampras and agassi in a row) and reached ATP finals on indoor carpet surfaces too. His injuries started plaguing him when he was entering his prime, he was only 26 in 2002 which was his last high level season. He could have won much more titles, including GSs, if it weren't by his injuries, since the circuit didn't have dominant players and GSs were won at the time by guys who were very good but far from stellar like Johansson and Gaudio.

      There is very little tactics in today's game. Slug it out from the baseline. I don't see too many varieties in game styles, for example.Sampras was an all-court player who could be dominant from the back court and be tactical in coming into the net, whether off of his first or second serve or returning a second serve. There are no players in the modern era who even remotely approach the well-rounded game style and abilities of Sampras with Roger being an a close exception.

    • @slashtrio
      @slashtrio 4 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Leonardo Joy: well it’s more about the courts than the player. Let’s see how prime Sampras vs prime nadal on mid 1990s speed Wimbledon? Sampras wins easily. Conversely Rafa beats Sampras on any clay court during any time period. On super fast courts Sampras would always have major edge over Rafa.

    • @martydav9475
      @martydav9475 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @Mato Juhas On a properly fast court Sampras would have served-and-volleyed Nadal to defeat every time (Djokovic too), just like he did Agassi in Majors( 6-0 Sampras). Nadal couldn't cope when second-tier serve-and-volleyers Rosol, Muller and Brown beat him at Wimbledon on slowed-down grass courts, nevermind the great Sampras on fast grass. In the twenty-one years before the courts were slowed Wimbledon was won nineteen times by serve-and-volleyers (McEnroe, Becker, Cash, Edberg, Stich, Krajicek, Sampras and Ivanisevic) but only twice by baseliners.Great baseliners like Connors, Wilander, Lendl and Agassi - I saw them all - could muster just two titles between them as the serve-and-volleyers swept all before them.Every single one of those Wimbledon Champions - bar Ivanisevic, who was too unpredictable and would beat himself at times, despite reaching four finals - would beat Nadal and Djokovic on fast slick grass, which is why I don't take seriously the Nadal/Djokovic GOAT nonsense usually spouted by silly fanboys who've never seen tennis before this era and haven't got the slightest historical perspective.

The one-handed backhand, the serve return position, the running forehand, the artistic hands, the serve and volley, the short response and pass, etc. Rafa and Novak are the evolution and transition into physical beasts. Players like Nadal and Thiem have styles that require lot of energy and power and are the opposite to the less draining serve and volley style when the courts were fast . If they played 5 sets on slow courts, players like Nadal and Thiem will burn out easily and retire early. If they don't retire they would only play only 3-4 of the masters, never consecutively because with the slams there would be 13 BO5 tournaments in the tour with slow courts. Kuerten was 23 in this match (he turned 24 later that year). Less than one and a half year after that, and still going on 25, he had 3 RG, 5MS (including 1 in Cincinnati´s hard court), 1 Masters Cup (beating Sampras and Agassi in the SF and F) and several weeks as number one under his belt. The hip started to take a toll on him during 2001 US Open in his QF match against Kafelnikov. After an unsuccesful 1st surgery in early 2002, despite a few glimpses here and there (beat Federer in 2003 Indian Wells and 2004 RG, beat Safin in 2002 US Open etc) he was never the same. Just as a comparison look at what guys of the newest generation like Medvedev, Tsitsipas and Zverev achieved at their early to mid 20´s. So yes, without the injury, against aging Sampras and Agassi and the rising guys at that time (Hewitt, Roddick, Ferrero, Safin), before Federer entered his prime by late 2003/early 2004, he could have pilled up a few more important trophies, including majors outside of RG, that would have put him in a different tier of tennis history.

      it is not little if you consider that he practically stopped playing/practising at 29 years old. 29! Wawrinka started playing very good at 28-29. When 30 he wasn't interested and not practicing much (stopped practising?) and didn't any titles after 6 years at No1. And when 31 he acknowledged to himself that indeed he is not interested, and that he will only focus on one final US open. Called his old coach back, trained to get back in shape for this, won, and then removed his placement from all later tournaments for some months (6 months) before retiring.
      The stuff done is up to 29 years old, when 30 it was already not practicing, when 31 trained for 1 tournament.
