The orange text that comes up occasionally is basically saying that the subtitles don't work, and later that it's because the actors don't seem to be able to speak english. It really adds to the sketch and makes it one of my absolute favorite Grotesco episodes.
To add to this there was a time when one of the big swedish channels (who is clearly the one being spoofed here) often had issues with their subtitles and often had to put out a message that they had problems with them 😂
The fart jokes have been taken out of context. In the original epsiode as it was aired in Sweden, there are a bunch of fake-ads. Lots of them. One of the ads are for adult diapers, where theater-actors praise the product because it allows them to perform and not having to think about their incontinence problem.
Not sure if you caught it, or if you just agreed with his sentiment on pure performance alone, but "Poland Barker" actually finishes his monologue with "and with God as my witness, I'll be DAMNED if I don't win an Oscar for 'Best Supporting Actor' and that is the freakin' fruit in this courthouse!" So, he too thinks that his performance is Oscar-worthy :D I really love the way the writing combines some English, some complete gibberish, and some lines where their lines sound like the words they would say, but are completely wrong words, like "I admiral you for taking this chase", the DA's "Yes, I sing those flies alright - but I'm mighty prude of it; this country's going down the spine, and someone's got to take the trash out and do it" - and of course 'Seinfeld's brilliant "That's RHINOCEROUS!" :D
There’s a Swedish film from the 1960’s called the Adventures of Picasso. The entire film is in pretend language. Made by a group of comedians who made many films together. Hasse & Tage
this is exactly how we all reacted in sweden when this came out, it soo insanely random but somehow really well done with the serious acting mixed with the nonsense english xd
The primary inspiration has to be The Jury by John Grisham (book turned into movie in the 90s). Becomes John Grisley here in The Trial. This was my first time seeing it and there are so many hidden jokes that it's impossible to catch them all in one viewing. I need to go back and find more Grotesco stuff.
Yes, for sure; "The Jury" (An excellent movie, by the way, but aren't most products based on Grisham that?) is the main plot here. No doubt about that. But also some other American trial movies has been tucked in, if I'm not mistaken... Wasn't there a bit from "A few good men" aswell?
The best part about watching this several times is that you catch English that is correct English but just won't for the context. Like the judge at 3:34 who "gively give the Microsoft Word to the district attorney".
Another Swedish comedy group is Galenskaparna & Aftershave. Very beloved in Sweden. Dont know how much is subtitled though, but 'British bandy' and 'anyone for english' is in English at least.
There are alot of good comedy groups in sweden. Some are good even in the international scene, but many are just better for "swedes". We have classics as "Hasse & Tage", "Nöjesmassakern", "Galenskaparna Aftershave" etc. And then whe have "Killinggänget" (with people like Robert Gustavson), and Grotesco (this). The we also have "Kvarteret skatan", "Karatefylla", "Varan-teatern" och "IjustWantToBeCool" from later years... And many more before, in between and after. Many of them rather rude, harsch and blunt, but with sharpness and intelligence humor. Cheers.
The Trial is one of their episodes lower on the the tier-list, but Grotesco is king no matter what pretty much. I recommend some Poesi för fiskar by Crazy Pictures and ofc more Freudian Slip. And definetly more Grotesco season 1-3. (BesteFar-skit is mostly funny due to Swe-Dan language-relations fiy. And I doubt it will be as funny for Eng speakers)
Others have explained what the little noticed regarding the subtitles are about, so I'll just list some of them in approximate order. One of the first ones is the standard one that was also given sometimes during real movies. "We have some problems/issues with the subtitles." Later it says the same but also adds "the actors doesnt seem to know English". And towards the end, the last one is just "We are having issues/problems" - but it is also the saying for when you want to say "We are in trouble" basically. So yeah, a sort of commentary on the sketch itself disguised as official real-time PSAs, but still part of the sketch.
Don't miss the last notice before the "actors don't know English"-notice, it doesn't say "We have some problems with the subtitles", it say "We apologise that we are currently having problems with the subtitler" aka the person writing the subtitles 😆 it's at 4:55
09:00 It says “We’re having problems with the subtitles. The actors don’t seem to know English.” I’m guessing the English is so weird that those who were trying to write the subtitles didn’t understand, and then they made a joke out of it.
Two of my favourite Grotesco songs are Blanda upp (mix it up) and Flyktingkrisen (the refugee crisis), which are more of a compilation of songs about how Sweden reacted to wave of refugees from Syria during 2016. 👍👍
Fry Him (sounds like the swedish) Fri (free) Him "Fria honom" is the correct- like bad swenglish xD if you understand english its even better as they mix swedish words into english, making it be double meanings
If you like Grotesco and their musical bits, you might want to check out their episode "Flykting-krisen". Their take on the Immigration-political events of 2015. As time goes on, it gets a little dated, and you will need a good translation and some understanding of the domestic political landscape of Sweden in the 2010s, but it's awesome. Arguably their magnum opus. It might not fit your format for a video, but you'll enjoy it. Thanks for your videos, i like them.
The fact that he, when he confessed at around 12:45 spoke gibberish and yet the actual words were something like "I'll be damned if I don't get a oscar for best supporting actor" and you then saying that it was oscar worthy is so fun to me! 😅
To explain this you need to know a lot about Swedish culture. I've seen a few of your reaction videos before, so I know you know about Grotesco enough. But Swedes are good at English because we use subtitles on the movies we see here. During some times in history, usually when the techniques for subtitles change, the subtitles don't add up timewise with the movie talk. So it isn't uncommon when a cheap movie have a pushed release in Sweden without anyone checking teh timing of the subtitles, so you usally get the push notification (orange at top of the screen) explaining the errors of the subtitles. Somethimes it is off, sometimes it is ill-timed with the movies. So the skit in this is a several layer joke,, and you have laughed at most of them. This is a remake of the Jury with Matthew McCognaughey and Kevin Spacey the recurring joke is that they got issues with the subtitles, but in the end they just give in and say the actors don't know English!
I'm glad English speakers can appreciate this 😂 But I believe you have to understand Swedish in order to fully appreciate it. The initial accent is (somewhat exaggerated) Stockholmian, as it were. The ‘overhaulingʼ joke is that Swedes tend to believe they speak English better than they actually do and attempts to challenge their prejudices about the American South. The ‘blackfaceʼ part is obviously unacceptable in 2024 as opposed to 2010 (?) 🙄
The orange text that comes up occasionally is basically saying that the subtitles don't work, and later that it's because the actors don't seem to be able to speak english.
It really adds to the sketch and makes it one of my absolute favorite Grotesco episodes.
For sure, this is advanced level swedish comedy
How do you translate comedy that in itself is funny because it can’t be translated. 😂
Genius! 😂
To add to this there was a time when one of the big swedish channels (who is clearly the one being spoofed here) often had issues with their subtitles and often had to put out a message that they had problems with them 😂
When the judge asks the counsel to approach the mini bar...lol
I give you the MS Word.

Yes! Watch it please. It is great.
1978. Jag var med en kompis och såg den på bio.😄
Yes its top notch... When Picassos father joins SS at the rank of "Hauptbanhof" and salutes all with "Halv liter" (half a litre)
Yngve Gamlin and Povel Ramel made gibberish scenes, i think the inspiration is from them.
"Executive Producer David Larry"
😅😅😅
It's a parodi on the movie A time to kill with Samuel L Jackson, Sandra Bullock and Matthew MaConaughey.
Its mainly a spoof of the 90's movie "A Time To Kill", known in sweden as "Juryn" (the jury) hence the title "The Trial".
Love Grotesco . As a swede I am glad you know about them . 😊

Hm. I thought it might be inspired by To Kill A Mockingbird, and a little bit of The Trial by Kafka, perhaps 😅
@@Buickrm Agreed - A Few Good Men was definitely part of it. The setting and many characters came from The Jury, subtitle A Time to Kill.
A few scenes were definitely inspired by Mississippi Burning which stars Gene Hackencra…Gene Hackman.
😂😂😂 Never seen this - brilliant!! Thanks!
As a swede, I laugh at and love this sketch, it's like getting a unexpected heimlish manoeuvre, shit comes out even if you like it or not xD
Thank you for this excellent channel! Your reaction and appreciation makes Grotesko even funnier! 🙏
Thanks for sharing your reaction with us, man, this is classical gold for me and I'm finally happy to share the joy with someone outside Sweden!
Henric Dorsin's imitation of Charle Chaplin imitating Hitler was just hilarious 😂
It means "We have problems with the subtitles, it seems that the actors can´t speak english" 😂😁
Making fun of the stereotype of the south and the swedish language at the same time. Brilliant
The best part about watching this several times is that you catch English that is correct English but just won't for the context. Like the judge at 3:34 who "gively give the Microsoft Word to the district attorney".
Naming the jury "curry" is brilliant🤣😂😅😁
Check out Grotesco’s Liverlellie, it was made in the same era, but it's a parody of a Jane Austin movie
Love that they even paradied the Seinfeld music!
It seems to me the Swedes and the Brits have a similar sense of humor. Both nations appreciate dry, dead-pan humor with a lot of self-deprecation.
My favorite Grotesco skit is probably Liverlellie, which is a parody of british period dramas.
Suggested that one in a comment :)
Would work well since it's in english also
Yes!

Haha, just great as always.

Downloaded all Grotesco on my ps3 when it was new (2 seasons) - it's the most valuable media on it (more valuable then hard copies of games also :3)
Grotesco is one of the best :), but check out "Karatefylla" as well, some of the sketches are awesome.
