I originally uploaded this video (Grotesco - Portal to Gothenburg Reaction) on Monday, however I was not happy with the final edit I made. Originally I had to remove the Gothenburg song due to copyright (when I uploaded it, it said it was Blocked but only in Sweden - which is not ideal considering anybody watching it would be in Sweden). I really didn’t want to remove it as it seemed an interesting and integral part of the whole episode. However, I then removed it and uploaded the rest of the episode. However, not being happy with doing it, I decided to put the video in Private after a couple of hours and work on trying to get it accepted by TH-cam with the song included. I have now been able to do that, so this is the full version with the song included. I believe this will be better for anybody watching in that they will get to appreciate a brilliant song and piece of work from Grotesco. I also wasn’t happy with the lighting on the video (from my camera) so in the meantime I adjusted the brightness to make it more palatable for anyone watching. I hope this is better for anyone watching. Anyway, while I am here, I just want to thank anyone who has been watching my videos. It has been an awesome journey exploring Swedish comedy, satire and just Swedish culture in general. Most of all I have loved reading all your comments and furthering my understanding of your great country. If you have any reaction requests that you would like to see, please drop them underneath but in the meantime, thanks again and have a good one. Cheers!!
Amazing that you managed to fix it! Just wanted to remind you that a emailed the to the original "cotsume party" video as you requested. I've also tranlated a bunch more comedy videos for you to react to!
The building is Globen (nowadays known as Avicii Arena, yet everyone calls it Globen still), originally an ice hockey arena, but is nowadays multipurpose, mostly used for concerts, horse shows, etc. Up until 2023 it was the largest spherical building in the world, until the Sphere in Las Vegas was finished.
Globen was originally called "the glob" in English, until somebody told them what a "glob" actually is in English. Then they had to redo all the English marketing material - quickly.
So not to confuse the two places.. this is showcasing the nominal invasion of Stockholm through the rift from 70s Göteborg and that building is a mentioned the iconic Globen in Stockholm.
@@RobertClaeson That would have been awesome if it was true but unfortunately, we're too good at English for it to be true. Remember when Honda tried to launch a model called "fitta" (means "cunt" in English) though? They will NEVER forget what that means in Swedish.
This is pretty much a standard Grotesco episode (they are all different, but the weirdness and absurdity is a staple Grotesco thing). Just watch all of it, everything is gold!
7:55 The joke is actually about how he bought a Dodge. Then he asks how he could afford it. And he says "The colors were skew". Skeva (skew) is pronounced the same as Cheva (Swedish slang for Chevrolet).
Yes, but that would be impossible to translate properly. The joke in the translation worked well and retained the spirit of the original joke, I think.
Funny thing concerning Crazy Frog at 20:30 - The animation was done by Erik Wernquist, one of the members of Grotesco (The guy playing Schwartzengrover I believe)
As someone from Gothenburg with generations of my family having lived and died there, I wish there really was a portal back to the good ol' days. I was born 20 years too late😂 Gothenburg has changed so much since I left in the 90's it no longer feels like home :/
Jag förstår precis. Tyvärr har de flesta städer förlorat sin charm idag. Modern ful arkitektur, låg kvalitet på allt, bilar prioriteras framför människor, otrevligt folk..m.m.
It was a great episode when Per Andersson talked about his life in "Stjärnorna på slottet". He's always been a showman, he and his friends started making shows when they were very young and invited people in the neighborhood. He also told a story that sounds like it's from a movie but heclaims it really happened. When on the tram in Gothenburg someone saw Per and started to sing the song from this episode and it spread to the whole tram.
To REALLY understand this satire you have to know the "siblingship" of Stockholm VS Gothenburg, especially between 70s Gothenburg and their special TV-shows that is very much like Englands "Musichalltheatre" with Slapstichumor and the "uptight" Stockholmers aversion of this.
Small correction. You cannot smell the sea from Gamlestan. It's too far away. But from Gamlestan you can take tram 11 to Saltholmen where you can go by ferry out into the archipelago.
Love Grotesco and this one is just hilarious. It just perfectly shows the different times and atmospheres and also the difference between the poshy Stockholm and at that time the industrial, working class city of Gothenburg. Gothenburg was called "Little London" in the days, and the songs refers to a TV-show in the 70´s that was a swedish version of brittish sing along shows.
Actually all original Grotesco sketches were these thematically bundled minimovies put into a series. There were orinally 2 seasons, but in the ends 3 seasons were made. Except this one, which was the first episode of season 1, the other two most famous episodes are "Kaffe" (Coffee) and "Sossezombies" (Socialdemocratzombies) from season 2. 24 episodes all in all, 8 in each season.
Yes, "5 ants are more than 4 elephants" was very popular. Both me (born '78) and my 4 years older brother watched it more or less religiously. It was more or less in the same vein as Sesame Street or the Muppets except without puppets. Just three fun people and some animations. Teaching kids about numbers, alphabet, more vs less, all those basics.
My favorite snus (moistered tobaco) is acutally named ' Göteborg's Rape'. Google that! Yes, you do know that we hate each other, but its like Glasgow contra Edinburgh. The makaril thing is about the ever losing football team, black and green stripes on their shirts, named GAIS, the team stockholmers hate the most! But, I am a GAISare, from Hisingen Island [suburb of Gothenburg, duck, quick]. Keep up your channel. Greetings from Jonas Gothenburg Sweden. ❤😊
My father was Blåvitt (IFK Göteborg) fan. He told me that tjej were the angels and that "GAIS är gjort av papper och bajs" ( made of papper and shit.....) I remember fights between supporters but even worse when team from Stockholm arrived! The rivalty between Stoclholm and Göteborg is wellknown.
Important to mention here might be that last part of the name of the snus brand "Göteborgs Rape" is pronounced "rapp-éé" and NOT "reyp"! Personally I preferr the smell of "Röda Lacket" since that's what my dad used during basically my whole childhood.
If you want some more short movie style comedy, poesi för fiskar makes some hilarious cinematic social commentary. De Arbetslösa, for example, is great. You should give it a watch
It definitely is. You almost never see anyone smoke here nowadays. I used to smoke, but changed to snus ten years ago. Snus probably isn't completely safe (although I don't think anyone has ever come to a definite conclusion whether or not it is), but it's far less dangerous than smoking for sure.
That’s funny because i literally dreamt about a portal from Florence to Gothenburgh around 2008. Like dreamt while I was sleeping. It consisted of stairways, up and down and up again and down, up, downs and so on..
To understand it 100% you need to know the realation between Stockholm and Gothenbourg. Guess you need to be swede to get some of the jokes. Grotesco always high class
The amount of references and puns in this sketch is insanely high, as a foreigner you miss about 90% of the good stuff. But the remaining 10% are pretty damn funny!
Fun with a full video reaction! Sadly the translator took a bit too much freedom in the translation. Like the song was not "Come on and go tenburg" wtf? they are singing "Gothenburg is the city on G" translator changed it only because "To be on G" in Swedish means "on their/its way" "Example: Are you coming soon? I'm on G I'll be there in 10"
I don't quite agree. Part of being a translator is to be able to make sense of the source material for people who don't know the language, but at the same time keep the original's type of humor. Some things are just impossible to translate verbatim, so then you have to come up with something that is both understandable, humorous, and keeps the original's intent, even if it isn't an exact word for word translation. Sure, you can perhaps argue that the translator could have come up with something better here, but I understand the dilemma and I think it at least works in this context.
th-cam.com/video/Lbh3uAZ4WUM/w-d-xo.html If you ever seen anything about Swedish traditional midsummer festivities I guess you will appriciate this. No subtitles required!! Just a short explanation on the strange dance: "små grodorna, små grodorna är lustiga att se, ej öron, ej öron, ej svansar hava de" is a traditional children's song and dance common on midsummer even among grownups. The lyrics is roughly "little frogs, little frogs are so funny to watch,, no ears, no ears, nor tails to be seen". enjoy! 😀👹🤠🤡👺 (these are the merry men you will find on the brightest night of the year)
Really hard to get it because of the language barrier (and lacking subs) and when it's making fun of the second biggest city in Sweden. You haven't seen the Little Britain American pastor skit? You don't know about Globen yet?! Now called Avicii arena. orz

Hey man I have noticed that you are calling grotesco a show but I'm from Sweden and grotesco is not a show it is a comedy group
Hey react to this (Galenskaparna) World Weight-Lifting Championship with English Subtitles

Also, it's one of, if not the most, iconic landmarks in Stockholm (even though there are bigger arenas)
It's also included in the biggest model of the solar system

I think he said "fälgarna var skeva", not "färgerna var skeva". The rims were skewed, not the colors.

Yes. It was him.

Everything changes over time. Gothenburg has changed tremendously since it was originally founded by the Dutch.
This is an accurate depiction of Gothenburg. Goa gubbar!

"Its game over, game over man!" Thats a line from Alien.

I know I recommended this to you ages ago, but others might have too. So glad you got to it! This is pure brilliance! Hope you'll watch more Grotesco!
This was out way before the show Dark.
You asked about snus. I'd wager it's more common than smoking, and yes I use it!
That song is stuck in my head now 🤣 Göteborg är staden på g 😂 Hjälp! 😂😂😂
Göteborg is the capital of puns.
Some of it got lost in the translation. Haha

If you havent seen "ett kilo mjöl" (one kilo of flour) you really should its one of my favorite Grotesco sketches
That one and Arbetarfiket
If you want some more short movie style comedy, poesi för fiskar makes some hilarious cinematic social commentary. De Arbetslösa, for example, is great. You should give it a watch
Gothenburger here! Literally ate smoked mackerel as a snack earlier today…
Their best sketch by far is Sossezombies. :D
"have you evee used snus?" well, everyday for like 15 years. I believe its more common than smoking in sweden.
Source, just me and the people i know.

I can recommend Varanteatern.
Yeah, me too
The city of laughter… It is!
So good, a classic!
That’s funny because i literally dreamt about a portal from Florence to Gothenburgh around 2008. Like dreamt while I was sleeping. It consisted of stairways, up and down and up again and down, up, downs and so on..
I love you, Mert Swe! I like your irish dialect. You are welcome to Sweden. ❤❤❤
14:00 it’s not a blackface, it’s face camouflage.
I am from Göteborg (Gothenburg) and yes it was the dialect from here he spoken. The man that come up in the hole

those goa gubbar, would be a bump
Oh no, they opend the portal TO GOTHENBURG
Gothenburgians are sometimes called sillstrypare. Sill is a fish species and strypare means strangler.
Sorry I don't know the whole lore 🎣
I hope whoever is translating these grotesco episodes would also translate some episodes of Hipp Hipp
Thank's 😂😂😂😂
The Tage Danielsson quote could be translated to "Without a doubt you're not very smart"
The correct translation is "without doubt, one is not entirely sane."
You should look up some of Carl Stanley’s standups I don’t know if you can find them with subtitles though.
Fun with a full video reaction! Sadly the translator took a bit too much freedom in the translation. No,fika is not crabfisch 😊
People standing with signs saying welcome is a joke. When imigrants come it said the same and then went to shit.
In Stockholm, snus is niche. In Gothenburg, snus is in everyone's pockets and lips
What? Well thats just lies.
@@viikmaqic Not lies. A joke based on classic stereotypes.
@@primedasymmium In that case, sure. We are all faggots in Stockholm. Obviously ;)
Yeah in Sweden you can pull off the black face, unless you are being racist. ☺️
This is black belt satire. Just a fraction of native swedes watching this will understand it.
Oh duckie, you think too highly of yourself 🤭. And give way too little credit to others.
14:03 Black faces or othe couours give you scores, axiom!
