With the exception of the marines, other branches have been phasing out bayonet training as part of their core training program, and the bayonet has turned into a more utility knife. There has been only one known bayonet charge in recent memory and that was back in 2005, done as an act of desperation by group of Scottish soldiers when they ran out of ammunition
The jiggly of the Bayonet is do to the difference in barrel profiles between your AR15 and a standard M4... M4's have 14.5" barrels and AR's come in 16" without FFL for a SBR. If you want to have it tight you can buy a $11.00 adapter that you take the flash suppressor off and put the adapter on (rather easy).
I have a GI issue bayonet for my Colt Sp1 and it shakes on the gun. They tend to be loose for fast attach and removal. More for fast thrust and stabbing action. My dad was telling me about the chants they had to say when in basic training. The Drill instructors would yell "What is the Bayonet for!" and the recruits would yell back "To Kill!" pretty wicked...
The reason the finish is coming of is due to the fact the S&W powder coats the blade rather then the black oxide process that is used by Ontario. With the exception of the S&W M9 all previous manufacturers utilized the black oxide process as well.
@fredhart Great Video I have the SW3B for my mossberg 590 it's a Little Different Mine Scratched up to But I tried the Wire Cutter and it seems Backwards I wish you would of done a Wire Cutting Demo I can't Figureit out?
My son has the Phrobis and I'm not impressed with it either. These knives are flawed no matter the maker unless you are ordered to "Fix Bayonets"... then you may need one! There are so many better options if you just need a knife. Cool factor... yes. 3Cr13 is a surprising choice of steel for this model also. Nice job Fred!
Good review, Sir! I actually learned quite a lot. However, (I will be testing this knife shortly so maybe I should actually hold my tongue until I actually have some experience?) I remember when I was comparing this with the Ontario offering, Ontario's specs said they used a 420 stainless blade as well(if I recall correctly). It could be the special type you mentioned in this video, though, so it may be a higher quality. Anyway, and I realize this might hurt some feelings out there, a lot of the time(for example, rifle scope lenses for sure) a company will have the main components manufactured in china or Taiwan(there are forges in both places that turn out really high quality steel these days. Maybe in the past not so much, but these days you can get some pretty high value and quality from them), and then "assembled" here so they can put "Made in USA" on the product. With rifle scopes, US Optics actually grind their own lenses here and Schmidt Bender grind their own in Europe, most of the rest of the companies buy lenses from factories(in many cases the same factories, then sell products that vary wildly in price, from company to company) in mostly China in particular, so I'm told. Tiborasaurus Rex has a great channel and series on extreme range shooting that explains, in depth, most everything you'd want to know about rifle scopes. Now since you said the Ontario m9 used 420, maybe they do forge it here, but many times people pay the high price thinking they're getting "the best" and it turns out, in reality, they could have gotten very similar quality with some of the brands and products that those folks would cringe and turn their noses up at. It's just human nature, after all, to say, "mine's better cause I paid more", especially if they feel in their heart that they have been ripped off. Now, to clarify, I'm not talking about the folks who can say, "yeah, it might be the same quality, but I intentionally payed double because it's important to me that I only buy American goods. They just turn me on, and make me feel patriotic." I have no problem with that at all, and I say those people got something for the extra money that didn't come in the box with the product. What they got is pride of ownership and a good feeling that they supported an American(or whatever nationality) family somewhere. Sorry for the long-winded comment, but as for this model bayonet, I did see a review from (supposedly, I have no way of knowing) one of our troops who served in Afghanistan, and he said it is a working soldier's blade that is "on par with a Ka-bar". I think he gave it 4(maybe 4.5, can't remember) out of 5 stars. I also would think, for a hard-working choper of a blade, you would probably want a softer steel, as you mentioned yourself, so that the point doesn't break off. Again, good solid review!
Thanks for this review. I'll not be buying one of them anytime soon. The bayonet shouldn't be that loose. A little loose is normal but that seemed excessive. They also aren't razor sharp. Razor sharp knives tend to lose their edge and chip when used for chopping or used in rough combat environments. Bayonets are made thicker and with a wider angle to make the edge tougher. The old original bayonets I believe were parkerized and made of a good high carbon steel.
Glad to see you some better. Was starting to think you was going zombie, the way you was a looking.. Walking Dead is a great show, the comic were better.
The fuller isn't just for weight. When you stab a lot of blade into a human, the weight of blood and flesh form almost a vacuum seal on the blade making it hard to pull out. The groove helps air and fluids to flow and makes it easier to pull the blade out.
Thats pretty short, I would have thought it was at least 48 cubic centimeters...anybody know what that equates to in light-years?(I live in the south, we do things a lil difernt...)
This bayonet works for me I don't. Care about the finish its not for display anyway it's a tool, I opened up a couple of hundred beer bottles with it, I dug up soil for laying traps and best its much better using a fork for stabbing and cutting , I use this tool wisely to make it work for me, all in all I'll give this tool 5 stars
although, rarely used, removing a tool from a fighters 'arsenal' simply because it hasn't been used in decades is foolish (IMHO). I understand a gov't needs to get value for OUR dollar, but just like the US sending troops without body amour, or the air force removing guns from fighters in vietnam (and later having to rig gun pods on phantoms), gov't motivated (FAR behind the lines) thinking isn't always the best decision making. NO, not every fighter needs one, but should be trained to use one.
Haha blood grove it's a notch cut down the length of the blade hard to believe but it adds strength it does have a purpose it is to keep the blade from bending where blood grove come from is beyond me just look at history they discovered that that notch keeps there swords from bending or breaking its true do your checking
A blood groove is implemented so you can have these longer higher carbon blades. The groove is cut out so the blade can keep it's length but be lighter. Nothing to do with bending or breaking. Maybe the bending part part a bit. But it's meant to keep the blade light without sacrificing length
Oh my God!!!!!!! The finish is coming off. What do I do? Haha. Man don't you worry your pretty little head about that. It's gonna happen. It's a TOOL, it's not going to look new forever. Honestly you might learn to appreciate wear and character on your weapons and gear.
He was just saying the finish is cheap. Sometimes the finish actually plays a role in the construction and here it doesn't The fact that it is rubbing off so easily is a flaw.
I heard Charlie can smell a shiny bayonet from 25 meters, Brah. I get what you're sayin though...did Boba Fet give a crap when he got a scratch on his anything? Heck no, he never said a word...he didn't have to...he let his scratched up, battle worn and proven gear do the talking...
WTF even is a hardwell rockness? Threw out 3 different weights... I'm more confused now after watching this than I was before wasting 20 minutes of my life watching this.
60$ in real life 140$ in game.
Carruj Which game?

Great review, it wiggles slightly on my stock muzzle break but is snug on my after market break from spikes

You had me at "Smith & Wesson!" :-)
Its been a while since I watch a fredhart video, and there just as great as ever!
Great video! I bought a Brazilian same model, called “Invictus Explorer”! I would like know what size this hidden tang knife! Thanks!

Leatherman uses the 420HC as well and it is pretty good
I just picked up mine today from the Bass Pro Shop in Portage Indiana it says under feature that my blade is made out of 420J2 stainless steel
will you take 35 keys for it?
Nope
+T34B4G But its FN :)
I see what you did there
Is that an ultraviolet FN, I'll trade my karambit for it?

The weak Chinese steel is the deal breaker for me.
the ontario one is modified 420 series
The overall length is 12.8oz? Haha just picking, glad you seem to be getting a bit better.

***** - Hey I liked the Saiga video, and used it to "properly re-convert" my Saiga IZ132
Can it be used to kill a bear?
Are there any other bayonets who features the bottleopener?
(Not S&W)
Pretty sure you can open bottles with literally ANY almost ANYTHING....especially bayonets...where there's a will there's a way...

The M9 has already been replaced by the OK3CS...

epic_fail No, no, no. Its 34 liters which equates to 453 days which is a complicated way of saying its overall length is 5 miles.
