    Why were you hitting wood with your bayonet? That's not what it was designed for. It's not an axe. You're going to tell your knife and ruin the tip of the knife if you're jabbing and cutting wood. Also, if you want to line up the blade, just put your thumb through the loop for a second to find up.
    The jagged back of the blade is designed to leave wounds open and make them harder to heal. And again, it's not a survival knife. It's a bayonet. It's not designed to be able to slice translucent tomato slices like a high-end kitchen knife. It's designed for penetration. It's designed to stab into some poor bastard on the wrong end of the blade. The bayonet would thrust into flesh well. It's not some novelty adornment for you to put on your AR on Halloween. You're someone who really doesn't know what makes the green grass grow. BTW, you're a civilian it's an AR-15 that you'd put this bayonet on, not an M16.
    I just noticed how old this video is. Oh well, I guess I'll leave a comment up anyway.

      Thank you for the reply! When looking at actual combat efficiency of hand to hand weapons for the US military in the last couple of decades, the most important aspects of a weapon are ease of deployment, ease of wear, and wound infliction. Knives and daggers are most effective when stabbing into your adversary multiple times, which is made more difficult the more serrations and jagged edges you have, making this particular model by S&W very outdated and low performing judging by overall design and tests performed throughout the years, especially in comparison to modern knives I saw used by fellow greens in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan.
      I have cut into and thrust weapons into tatami mats and carcasses as part of Western Martial Arts training and for general recreation, and in all of my personal experience the thinner the point is while remaining reinforced, the better it will penetrate into soft and hard surfaces. The point of this model is very stout and the steel is very soft, making thrusts into soft targets actually even harder because of the added friction.
      I hope you realize that a good portion of citizens, more than 2 million, of the US are either military or prior military, and that assuming someone is a "civilian" just because is a little strange haha, but I'm assuming you are currently serving or have served due to your final comments, so thank you for your service.

      Dude, the knife is an m9 clone. Literally says "m9" in the name. The m9, specifically the one from Ontario, is issued to the US military, along with the OKC3S bayonet. The m9 is like....THE bayonet. "Modern knives in Afghanistan" my ass.
      The m9 does its job, which is serving as a half-decent multi-tool whenever it's not mounted on the front of a rifle. Also, Pjames has a point. Why are you hitting wood with that knife? That's not what it's meant for.

    Bayonets are made for charging and putting it in your enemy and not a survival knife

    A bayonet is for attaching to the barrel of your rifle and turning it into a spear. You can also use one for hand to hand combat, but it's not a survival knife. Also, you can carry more than one knife on your person. One for your rifle, one for bush tasks, one for cleaning game and fish...

    Remember that the bayonet is also a tool of intimidation. As Stonewall Jackson said at First Manassas, "Give them the bayonet!" This bayonet is very intimidating: Confront an intruder in the home with this on the end of your rifle, it's going to make him think twice about "sticking" around. It's like seeing the dorsal fin of a White Shark breaching the water; if you don't conclude at that point that it's time to get out of the water, there's something wrong with you!

    While I was in the army, we were issued M9's along with our A2's but we were never taught to used them outside of when they were attached to our rifles. I was a commo soldier, not Infantry, so Im sure those guys got more in depth training on how to use the bayonet. But I also know that the US military also issued knives specifically for fighting. Our bayonets were almost never issued even when we deployed on field exercises, it may have been for safety reasons, I am not sure. I know that the only times I ever saw my bayonet was when we had a command inspection and we had to lay out all our gear for the brass to see when they walked though the Company AO. None of them were kept sharp! I served from 1987-94.

    I own this knife and was curious as to what others said of it and this was the first video I found, I can tell you that it is pretty heavy as knives go, Im disappointed that it doesnt hold up to regular use, but I suppose that's not why I bought mine. I have a hundred other blades I can use in a home defense or survival situation, this one I bought to complete a combat rig I was putting together for my militaria collection. I thought this looked better than the authentic issue versions. Civilian AR's in my state are not allowed to have a bayonet lug despite the fact that the muzzle is typically too far from the lug for a bayonet to properly lock on. The gun shop cut off the one that came on the rifle I bought, and they pinned the adjustable stock, thus making it...not adjustable...lol. New Jersey is a funny state.

    In that video with the guy using plywood he also broke off the tip of an Ontario bayonet at the same spot... if that makes anybody feel a little better about the S&W

    Now this knife looks badass like the one John Matrix used against Bennett in Commando 1985 "Arnold"
    But what is a knife that looks similar, but is actually effect, and has a saw on the top that is functional?

    Once inserted into a chest that "saw back" makes one hell of a wound cavity, It is not an ax hatchet, it is a bayonet!

    Remember this is a bayonet Not a chef's knife! . I like the M9 bayonets they work good in the wood or in a survival situation . Its not full tang but the REAL one got a very heavy steel bolt inside the handle who make them strong as a full tang so its not a problem . I don't know how good the Smith & Wesson model of this bayonet is because i never own one but i guess it is as strong as Phrobis ,Ontario , Or Lan-Cay . I got one long time ago it was a copy of the Phrobis III ., The blade was good but the bolt inside the handle was crap some kind of zinc metal or something . Sorry for little bad English

    • @themodernbladesman
      @themodernbladesman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately the knife broke at the shoulder of the tang the first time I tested it for batoning. As in the first hit of batoning. However this is probably due to the fact that s&w are not very experienced with making knives, as all knives I have seem from them lack good temper. So perhaps the original was much better. I also hear that the Ontario is the best of the reproductions readily available.

    You want a real Bayonet, get the Ontario OKC3S bayonet, it's an actual military issue with an 8 inch1095 high carbon blade. I have a Survivor bayonet and it looks like the S&W but it's more functional.

    do you think the military would issue this knife?

    • @themodernbladesman
      @themodernbladesman  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The US military usually focuses on utility type knives nowadays, like Gerbers, not longer fighting knives. I don't know much about foreign militaries to say much more. As far as I know, "combat" knives that are used in the US military personally belong to the warrior in question. That is warriors now usually purchase their own knives.
