I love the way you say things. I belive every single word you said. It's all about empathy and emotionally attached to your team your friends you family.
For those confused about the cup: The styrofoam cup analogy basically means that you will always be human, and you should always act as if you are no better than anyone else, regardless of the position you hold. The ceramic cup, as he used in his analogy, was for the position of that person, and not the person himself. The person himself is just another person, but because he held a high position, everyone sucked up to him. The very next year, he was then just a speaker, and did not get any of the luxuries afforded to him just the year before. This means, that if they were doing it for HIM and not the POSITION, then he would have been given the same luxuries whether he held a position or not. We, as leaders, all find ourselves in powerful places sometimes, and if we let that position become who we are and lose sight that we are no better, as humans, than those that work for us, we will fail as a leader. We must always remember we deserve the styrofoam cup, even if we are given nice ceramic.
I love Simon Sinek. Let's get that out of the way. :) But in relation to the bagel analogy, I would be there for the race and enjoying the race, the running. Free bagel at the end is optional. Also my time is far more important than a free bagel. If the line is too long I'm very happy to forfeit the free bagel to preserve my limited time elsewhere. I get the story of the bagel, and to manage how you see seemingly impossible obstacles to what you want. But I feel the bagel analogy could easily be used as being too focused on short term gratification and reward. Rather than to focus what's important to you. Not reward, but what you do with your time. And your friend didn't feel like standing in line with his time for a reward. But I'm sure your friend would stand in line for an experience, or helping someone easily.
I was thinking that too! Bagels are like $1. If I just ran a marathon, I'd rather hang out with my friend in a bagel shop than stand in a crowded line.
The ending was powerful. I get my ceramic cup now because of my position, never forget its okay to receive in styrofoam cup when the day I lose or give up my position, doesnt change my value. Tq for that.
You know that feeling when you listen to somebody feeling that you know them?! Then you hear more words and you think :” daaamn! Let’s get more excited! Let’s take care of each other!”... yay 🎈

Given the basic features of our species, the market for common sense advice is the gift that keeps on giving. This is only the second time I listen to Simon Sinek. He's clearly a great guy with a good heart. That being said, looking at it from Europe, the whole package on offer makes me worry about the state of affairs in the US: Are there really so many people there seeking guidance to help them live their life and who are hungry for common sense advice? Don't get me wrong. This is way better than joining a cult (small or big, even with HQ in LA or Rome). Funny to see how the audience feels the need to applaud - though after a few seconds of uncertainty - after Simon Sinek concludes one of his stories with a Great Lesson for Life. No criticism if there's a market for it and people are happy. Never a bad thing to receive good, common sense advice. Beats the competition with all sorts of strings attached (don't do this, think about Hell, go out and bother people with your end of the day warning, etc.) However, I'm not fully convinced that the audience gets much beyond the entertainment value, and clearly much less than Simon himself. Never forget that giving good advice to friends or strangers in need is one of the most rewarding feeling one can experience, not to mention it costs you nothing. In real life, however, any lesson that really matters and can serve as a compass can only be learned and eventually applied if you went through an actual experience vs. listening to an audiotape. Best quote: "A story I rarely share". This one goes straight into my bag of tricks with "Early in my life, I was lucky to learn an important lesson from a very wise man." (add Gandhi, Mandela, Einstein, or quote a Nigerian proverb). Then, as far as free bagels go, I'm probably just too snob to be caught standing in a line, be it for kissing the ring of the Pope, buying brand-new-but-yet-vintage sneakers, or get a free bagel without a proper amount of cream cheese. I might eventually succumb if it's to do a selfie with Sacha Baron Cohen. My advice to you: Stick to the freemium content. If really feeling the urge to splurge, ask yourself: Will I get wiser just by entering my credit card number to buy the 12 step program, knowing that the chances I go much further than that are thin? I'm speaking from experience borne out of a long list of books purporting to make me learn a foreign language in 90 days. Yeah, I know, we all bought those books . Would my current advice have served any purpose and prevented you from buying them in the future, or do you feel like you had to go through the journey to learn by yourself? That's my point.

if I can tell my younger self something...I would tell myself use your time wisely and save money. I regret a lot that I didn't save my money when I was younger. If I saved money when I was younger now I can focus on doing things I like to do...
amazing talk. But lets not forget, the war in Afghanistan was held to gain power over oil and make money. And the attacks on the camp were actually defence strikes.
That's the saddest part... The soldiers of all and every nation is giving their life away (even if they don't become a martyr) for a decision taken in diplomacy and political profit, their sacrifice is truly commendable because they don't ask a question and just sign their life no second thoughts for a war they don't know why it was started, because they believe it protecting their country.. like he said "doing something for others gives you fulfillment, purpose and true joy"
Bombs going off, in a war zone and he had no fear. Terrified, panicked when he realized his parents may find out where he really was, but he may have been sensing the danger of the fallen soldier.
The bagel was not free...it cost time! Denny's was once giving out free Grand Slam's (a $3.99 breakfast). I had to get in my car, drive the 20 minutes to the closest Denny's. wait a half-hour for a seat, wait almost the same for the food to arrive (because it was packed with other deal seekers), not know if the food was running out, at it was at many locations, leave a few bucks for a tip if i got any food, and then drive home. So, I am to spend an hour and a half (minimum) plus the cost of gas and a tip to get a “free” $3.99. I would rather go on my own when the crowds are smaller, get seated right away and served right away. This is worth spending less that $4.
I love Simon Sinek, and agree with almost everything he says.. But he should know that his time is more valuable than a free bagel. Point understood however, there are still two types of people, two ways of thinking about things.
The bagel isn't best example because standing in the line you pay with ur time and you can never buy back the time you lost standing in line- i am sure many will not choose bagel over precious time
He changed his Bagel story.. it used to end with he'd just walk up, cut the line, stick in hand & just grab 2 random bagels.. I forget the meaning but I always thought that was stupid because he was practically promoting chaos because what if everyone did that?.. I'm glad he's changed the story to leave that out because I always thought that was the stupidest story he's ever told

Opportunity to serve those who serve others. I like that, I did that... and if I can't, it depresses me. Thanks
I liked the story when he went over seas with the Airforce very touching story.
Thank you for sharing the full video specially the afganistan incident is not available in many of his speech.
Another way to look at the bagel story two minutes in...Time might be more valuable than $ (or a free bagel) to others.
Agreed
I love listening you Simon
One of the BEST
Thanks for the great points about responsibility
Thank you for making things funny and uncomplicated!!! One of the best speaker
..finished listening till end and have to add “ wonderfully expressed soul and courage, fear and humbleness. Because your purpose shouts out loud through you! And weeeee like iiit! 😍🤣🤗
If you want a bagel, yet you do not want to wait in line: Volunteer to help hand out bagels then take the last one.
soldier story goosebumps n'tears
Nailed IT!!!
FYI, you never really die, even if you get killed in this life. U will always be here. U dont have to worry.
Wow amazing !
Thank you Lindsay for sharing.
if I can tell my younger self something...I would tell myself use your time wisely and save money. I regret a lot that I didn't save my money when I was younger. If I saved money when I was younger now I can focus on doing things I like to do...
Serve those who serve others
Great example on the seals
The podium looks like an espresso martini
How could anyone give this speech a thumbs down???As I post this there are 540 thumbs down...I'm glad I'm not one of those people...
This was awesome
Great speech🙏
Practice being a last to speak yess it’s what leaders are doing I’ll try my best
Thank you 🙌
I really enjoy hearing he speak
especially when he slips into his British accent.
Powerful
He is very cultured!
amazing talk.
Brilliant
I have seen many speeches of his'. And I keep hearing the same examples. Inspirational though
I've done that excited thing on a plane!
Sis you survive?
7:23 lmao i also started clapping without noticing
I wish secretly that Simon was my uncle and would help me by talking to the Ceo at my job.Is it just me? Uncle Simon!
I love this Simon Sinek!
fantastic
Bombs going off, in a war zone and he had no fear. Terrified, panicked when he realized his parents may find out where he really was, but he may have been sensing the danger of the fallen soldier.
The Time allocated for a Bagel 🥯 might be better used for Rest for an Early Day at the Goal u are working at 😉
Perspective Matters indeed.
This is worth spending less that $4.
the SEALS story was very moving...
I love Simon Sinek, and agree with almost everything he says.. But he should know that his time is more valuable than a free bagel. Point understood however, there are still two types of people, two ways of thinking about things.
people can also see things that they don't want - and that is sometimes - not always - but sometimes - a better viewpoint -
Thank you!
What? You tryna take my fuckin' bagel!?
SEE THE BAGEL....
EAT THE BAGEL!
